Maybe it's a reference to the fact the first paper mario game was on the nintendo 64.
Something that no one else is talking about is that the title itself has way more promise than either Sticker Star or Color Splash.
Why? Because it's *The* Origami *King.* Color Splash and Sticker Star only explain gimmicks of the game, this tells you that there is at least a single person or item in this plot who is important enough to name the game after. They did this same thing with Thousand Year Door.
Yes, the title does explain the gimmick a bit, but it also points to the plot.
Edit: And it should also be pointed out that a paper gimmick done _right_ could *_really_* enhance the gameplay *and* story.
It's subtle things like this that make it seem even more like this game is a big improvement over Sticker Star and Color Splash.
You're right, it sounds like the title of something with an actual plot, like a book, or movie. Color Splash, and Sticker Star, on the other hand, do not.
Eh, I don't know. I think you could be reading too deep into it. Sticker star literally revolves around a sticker star as a plot point. I can see your reasoning though.
@@brandonvowell5100 yes, it certainly is possible I'm over-analyzing, but I'm an optimist, so...
Why am I imagining that the Origami King could kidnap Mario’s friends, and turn them into basically mind controlled origami forms. Maybe even have Mario meet Luigi, who turns into a new form. Possibly origami Mr. L. It wouldn’t make much sense, but it would be a neat reference

I gotta admit. This looks great. I'd advice everyone to watch the GameExplain analysis of this video (and the Japanese one). It literally says 'play alongside Mario characters old and new'. You see Kamek and a bomb-omb as partners. Even folded up bowser, bowser jr. and a Koopa seem to be partners too. As well as captain toad.
I have to admit this game looks great. Yes it might not be like the first paper Mario. But it really seems a heck of a lot better then everything Paper Mario we've seen since the Wii at least. Heck they even show at least 3 open world areas with the sea, desert and Rice fields area

This game feels like the definition of "cautiously optimistic." We know next to nothing about it, but it looks promising, yet we've been let down to many times to be truly excited for this game.

@@GregDaWizard Cs was not bad lmao
I'm expecting nothing so I can't be let down.
I might be remembering that quote wrong.
@@bobBob-oz5zc There's literally no reason to battle in Color Splash. It's a useless repetitive chore of a game, especially compared to the first and TYD. And that's not even touching on the major lack of story and unique characters.
It was bad, "lmao"
had_ookin Lemme start by saying it’s not the best. It obviously can’t be when the overarching story isn’t compelling, the unique character design was a step down and the battle system is straight garbage.
But in no world is it bad. The game isn’t an rpg anymore so treating it as one makes no sense. Colour Splash had the best world exploration, best level design, best visuals, best soundtrack, and the best individual character writing. You can’t call the game bad when it literally does things better than all the previous games.
I’m not saying it’s perfect, I’m just saying it’s not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. And based on your comment, it’s painfully obvious you’ve never played it so instead of jumping on the bandwagon and hating on it with no knowledge other than what everyone else says, maybe play the game next time before you hate.
as long as battles actually have purpose, or leveling, it is an improvement

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it looks like it will be an “open world” like a Mario and Luigi game where everyplace is connected. If not maybe a semi open world areas. I mean we see a few really open areas as well as two or three big open towns. I think it’s gonna be a mix of Mario and Luigi with modern and classic paper Mario.
Which makes sense with the closing of Alpha Dream and the end of the Mario & Luigi series. Combining of assets.
Hyperon_Ion I’m still banking on a future console Mario and Luigi game.
Well we can see the hub room where each number pipe goes to a different world, and I feel like those wide areas like the desert and the sea connect different locations/level. So I think the progression will still be kind of level-based, but with hubs.

This has literally been what everyone’s been talking about since the trailer came out
Yes, exactly.
Things I noticed:
1. There's an audience while you battle like in TTYD.
2. Bowser is not the villain like the last two games.
3. There are motion controls with the long arms.
4. The big turtle and thread guy are likely bosses, meaning they aren't using generic Mario bosses.
5. There was a room full of pipes, likely being a travel system like the pipes in TTYD, instead of an overworld map.
6. There's a flipping Sniffit bazaar.
7. There's a Japanese style area (with the red trees)
8. The objective is maybe to cut where the ribbons lead from, as the yellow ribbon was seen in the desert area.
The turtle looks like some form of super koopa
Good finds. This does make me more optimistic about the game.

The paper gimmicks suck they take me out of the story. TTYD had a beautiful and amazing story with no need to treat its entire world like a huge arts and crafts project.
I don't mind the paper gimmick but there has to be story and a good battle mechanic.
I honestly really like the paper gimmicks. The arts and crafts aesthetic is really charming to me.
@@stuffz1757 you do realize TTYD had paper gimmicks too, right? It's not as prominent as it is in Sticker Star and Color Splash, but they're still a part of the game.

I will say this. The music they were playing when they showed the title of the game sounds closer in style to the TTYD and Super Paper Mario music styles.
I was actually thinking that too
Made me tear up a bit honestly
It looks to me like they're trying to marry the style of the originals and the later games. Hopefully this one will be a home run.
Max Melendez as long as they do away with those “thing” items and make the battle system not pointless and sticker/card based I will at least enjoy it more than likely. I didn’t entire hare color splash, it’s just not a game I would play through again
“Nintendo has this very sneaky way of making you think the game has a lot more excitement and a lot more story.”
SSBU’s World of Light, see yourself out
I know right? Color Splash also had an ominous trailer that made it seem like it had a dark interesting story but it was just predictable boring stuff in the end. So glad I didn't fall for CS, I'm not gonna fall for Origami King either.
Same with BOTW.
BOTW had a fascinating trailer
I mean if you watched the related direct, World of Light was pretty much as advertised.
@@paya5616 As someone who deeply loves BOTW and is hyped as fuck for the sequel, I gotta be fair and say that Nintendo WAS sneaky with the way they advertised BOTW's story. They showed all these crazy cutscenes where Link and Zelda were desperately fighting for their lives and having some major drama together, and where Ganon is shown as this almost lovecraftian force of nature out for Hyrule's destruction.
Then you start the game and it turns out all of this is in the past, and all those crazy cutscenes that were shown in the trailer were just that, cutscenes. And not even story moments you get to live for yourself alongside Link, they're just memories that you unlock by visiting certain locations.
I really adore BOTW, it's one of my favorite games ever but Nintendo did hint at a much grander and bigger story than the one we got.
"Cautiously Optimistic" is definitely a good way of putting my mindset.
The name of the game doesn't appear to really be a gameplay gimmick anyway. The trailer wasn't like.. "Gee kids, tap X to bring up the Origami Screen, then use the gyros in your joycons or the touch screen to turn, fold and crease your way through the world of Origami King! Duh hoo, it's a Double Yoshi Exploshi!"
It definitely appears to be a story-related name, like The Thousand Year Door. Which is a good sign, I think.
I just saw this on my Switch news like five minutes ago and I was like “WHAT?!?” (cue JonTron).

I don’t mind if the game is way different, so long as it’s *good*
Super paper Mario was waaaaay different, and it was fantastic.
Also, on the subject of partners, I think it’s more promising than it immediately seems. If you look at the released screenshots of the game, the magikoopa and bobomb are seen following behind paper Mario in MULTIPLE different areas. Whether or not they help in battle remains to be seen, but they might just be permanent or semi permanent (per chapter) tag alongs.
Super Paper Mario wasn't fantastic. It had potential but it fell short because it had awful level design in many different instances. They gave you so many pixls, and only a couple of levels really embraced the purpose of them. Levels like 5-1, 6-1 and 7-3 were hot garbage. The whole of Chapter 4 sucked. Bad enough to say the level design as a whole was generally not good. It was more frustrating than enjoyable, because the amount of backtracking required in Super Paper Mario was just too much. Plus the amount of coins you needed, yeah..
In the Japanese battle footage, you can see outlines of 2 characters( I think it was Olly and Bob-omb) on the bottom right characters. Idk, maybe this means that partners are in the battles too
@@cider2384 clam down atleast it was decent
@@somany5 I didn't play TTYD but a sidescrolling platformer like SPM should not have that much backtracking. TTYD is an RPG so backtracking is understandable. But SPM follows the roots of 2D Mario Bros in functionality and it seems like they just tried to drag out the game with the backtracking. SPM is only 12 hours, so they had to put in some sort of grind elements in it.
Cider Well, if you’re like me, creativity and story make up for probably 60% of the experience.
Level design wise, SPM is probably the worst paper Mario, but the ost, story, and setting, imo, is insanely enjoyable.
5:54 it’s not that noone wants the paper gimmicks. I think they’re actually really cool and creative and I’m exited for it. It’s just that it shouldn’t replace a good story, interconnected worlds etc.
Seeing Paper Samus at the end feels like part-Nintendo making fun of itself and part-hint hint, wink wink. Maybe? Hopefully?
did you notice the TWO WATERMELON SEEDS ON SAMUS'S HELMET????
What?
Wuh
@XVNetwork Which Mario hint are you talking about?
Some people say it was meant to bea transition during a Direct which would make sense considering we know there has been a cancelled Direct.
When he says he woke up getting texts and messages, i legit picture arlo the puppet checking his phone and not the man behind the puppet.
It's been 5 minutes i'm still laughing
What man?
Saw the advert this morning on instagram and my first reaction was: "oh, Arlo is about to lose his stuffing"
those 6 colored pipes terrified me pre-release
so glad they turned out to be fast travel
What if, these party members start off as generic characters but we can customise them with odyssey like costumes so that’s why there’s an explorer toad and a jujutsu toad, they’re costumes that they can wear and could be armor if they wanted stat benefits
I would love that!
Me too!
What an extremely cool and exciting Idea! that they almost certainly won't do... :(
Maybe in a patch if the game does well.
Bro i would KILL for that.
This was one of the greatest announcements, but also the most anxiety filled announcement I have ever had

U guys are taking it too seriously lol
The moment this trailer was recommended to me this morning, before I even opened it, I laughed out loud. I immediately remembered your joke about "Paper Mario: Into the Fold, and it's all about origami!" xD
Genuinely, this looks like it has some promise. I don't care how similar it is to the older games as long as it's _good._ I'd love to see Paper Mario return to its roots one day, but if that's not in the cards right now, I hope they're giving it their all on this one. Here's hoping for fun gameplay and characters to go with this beautiful world they've shown us!
Renard Prower don’t say it’s not in the *cards*
“Cards” Heh.
Oh my goodness, I forgot he did that
Yeah i think the battle system is almost the same as the first two but with a twist
I like how they're playing with the 'actual paper' theme this time. 'paint' and 'stickers' sucked, but 'Origami as otherworldly horror' is much more engaging. I hope this is just a whole game of Shunned guy.
If they give it a compelling story and many characters instead of "Mario, foreign partner, toads, boring villain," that could really help. I'll say this until the cows come home: Nintendo, you can play with what kind of game Paper mario is as much as you like, but please make the story good. There is no reason the story should dip for a change in mechanics.
With Paper Mario, it’s so easy for all of this to go wrong. Here’s to hoping that all of this doesn’t somehow all go sideways.
Or turn out flat

I agree with you guys, let’s hope the plot isn’t that two dimensional.
@@Mr_Mimestamp This is a gold mine of puns.

My concern is in the combat. If there are no partners, I at least want the fights to be deep and thought-provoking. That and set-building outside of battles.
There is a Japanese battle preview, when translate one of the option is "weapons" and in it is only a single hammer icon and a single show icon, basically screaming "we aren't the bad ones! Theres no cards!"
If attacks are no longer consumable items and I have different attack options with something akin to badges or upgrades or something, I will consider this game. The battle system has to actually be fun though, not stuffed with gimmicks that get old quickly.
@@fuzzydude64 I translated it... the jump and hammer are under the weapons tab, and there's an item tab too.
And In the now deleted Chinese trailer. We see The toad from the mummy toad scene in battle
@@fuzzydude64 I think this new battle system envolves more strategy than the other ones, unlike CS where you just throw cards and you still win.
Paper Mario: Cautiously Optimistic THE GAME
When I first saw the trailer thumbnail on my switch, I was like, “Better Check Arlo’s channel next!!!”
There's something I only noticed after recuperating my initial blah reaction.
I don't see a single mention of "Things" anywhere. Are they finally gone? Can bosses be beat with legit effort and skill this time?! That would already give this a + if that's the case.
I would already be happy if you actually had a reason to fight enemies. In TTYD and PM64 the reason was levelling up. In Color Splash and Sticker Star, there was no reason. Combat was an annoyance.
I also suggest you watch Gameexplain's analysis. It's an hour long, and they show proof of their claims, and what they show is pretty exciting stuff!
We don't need a carbon copy of TTYD, we just need a game with a good story and gameplay that isn't dissapointing. If this game can do that, i can see it standing right next to 64, TTYD and Super
Shasha K
Thank you for accepting Super as the great game it is.
Yes. Personally I’d rank it higher than TTYD.
This, this, this right here, this comment saying that it doesn’t have to be TTYD 2 it just has to be at least GOOD
And some creativity thrown in too. Not just the generic enemies, toads, and paper gimmicks that could be replaced by the 'a' button
Ok look. I don't hate Super Paper Mario, but you have to understand why people don't put it on a pedestal. That game has some godawful level design sometimes.

Can I just say how proud I am that you didn´t even check what all this was about and just started recording so we wouldn't even miss your reaction to the news title? That's some dedication to good reactions right here! Thank you, really!
"There's so many different weird things going on" That was pretty much my reaction. I also got text by several people who know Paper Mario TTYD is top three favorite games for me.
I'm concerned because they didn't show much of the combat. I've heard tell on twitter that partners are supposedly back but also heard about the "ring-based combat system". Since we didn't see much of the combat, I hope its at least decent. I hope there are actually fun partners a la the first two games that participate in combat.
I’m pretty sure the partners will be able to take part in combat as in the Japanese trailer when we see Mario jumping on the boos the explorer toad is in the ring and does a little jump when Mario lands a jump so that could mean partners do take part in battle or play some sort of role in it

Honestly I’m both excited and worried about what this means for the rest of the year. On one hand, I’m happy this game was announced - 2020 will be less barren than now. This game shows that despite the direct being canceled there is still the possibility of more games being announced at random, without a large time before release or a big direct with it. Holiday 2020 might not have nothing because Nintendo seems to be willing to announce a game right before release. On the other hand, if they had this game in their back pocket and didn’t have a direct for it, does that mean there’s not enough content for a full direct? I hope that this game means that there’s more for 2020, because this year we especially need it.
This game was leaked beforehand, along with remasters of all 3d Mario games and Pikmin 3.
So that's what will probably come the rest of this year, the leaks were pretty much true. Plus a lot of other publications support the Pikmin 3 leaks.
Nintendo have said that they don’t want to reveal anything before they’re certain they can make it to the planned release date. If they were to do a direct with this philosophy, then almost every game would be within 2-3 months, which is not really a realistic release window for every game in a direct
Bio Zelink Wait, an actual remake of Mario 64 and Sunshine?!😯
Bio Zelink Wait what? Where did you get that info? This is the first im hearing of it
Parker DW I just looked it up,It’s actually true! No April fools day jokes about it!
I personally like the paper gimmick: While it may just be there because "Paper Mario", they really tried to do what they can do with it, and you have to admit, they seem to be taking it to a whole new level in Origami King.
I thought Thousand Year Door had some paper mechanics too, it's the curses.
Arlo is officially the law of the land when it comes to Paper Mario.
@@fiftyskoopaklub2982 Creativity? The latest Paper Mario was a joke of creativity. Bland characters, no thoughtful story, a copied fundamental of Sticker Star and a battle system that was just tiring, not worth the "innovation"
Fiftyset you clearly don’t have a grasp on good creativity or innovation if you’re going by the previous titles
@@fiftyskoopaklub2982 what the hell are you talking about? the first 2 games and super paper Mario had chapters more innovative and creative than the entirety of Sticker Stars and Color Splash combined.
Yes and no, i would love another TYD but like Risa Tabata (Game Director of Color Splash) said, the TYD (originally Super Mario RPG) formula was overtaken by the Mario and Luigi franchise and since then there isn't really the same necessity for the old Paper Mario. So Arlo is plain and simple the advocates for the N64/TYD-Fanboys, but there are many who began with Super Paper Mario and who would love to play more dialog driven paper based Mario games. TYD is for sure my favorite nintendo game, but when the next Mario and Luigi games are in the same quality as Superstar Saga or Bowser Inside Story, i shouldn't really complain about the current state of Paper Mario. I understand Nintendo at least.

It's clearly Color Splash 2.

I love how the plot of this game is essentially just, "Mario has to run away from the gimmicks, help Mario save the kingdom from Nintendo's weird crap."
That's exactly why I'm not looking forward to the plot of the game but when you word it like that it is pretty funny, hopefully it turns out ok.
When you put it like that... it's usually the case but hey I think the whole origami makes sense in the world of paper Mario
@@andreaspaghetti7342 I think this could go really good or really badly for the game, depending on how the writers execute it. Even if it's a weak premise, that doesn't mean said premise can't be done *well.* We've only seen 2 minutes of footage, so we really can't say anything for sure just yet. We don't even know that much about the gameplay, let alone the plot (aside from the basic premise.)

12:49 The “Shiny Boots” in the top-left corner has me worried about how the battle system will work.
Maybe it's a weapon akin to the badges in TTYD? You also had special kind of boots. Maybe in this game, weapons are sidegrades that come with a drawback (example: Shiny Boots do more damage against an enemy but you also take more damage or something) just speculating.
