Save Your Money!! A DIY Doll Stand for American Girl Dolls

  • If you are looking for a CHEAP, ridiculously EASY alternative to spending $20 at American Girl for doll stands (and let's face it, some of us need a LOT of doll stands), this may be just the DIY project for you.
    POST-EDITING addition: In the video I put together two sticky-sides of adhesive-backed Velcro. After filming this, I noticed that those two sticky sides didn't always stay stuck to each other. I put in a drop or two of glue and then let it dry and have had no issues since then, so I'd recommend that as extra "insurance".

    Kristie! You could not have posted this wonderful tutorial at a better time! Thank you so much! I was literally just on the phone with my husband and he had stopped at Hobby Lobby to check out their doll stands. He said they have 4. I'm going to buy them for you. And then he said I've got a rain check for Monday. They are 3.99 which isn't bad. But forget that rain check. He will be pleased when I show this to him! I purchased an American Girl doll stand years ago and never cared for it because it was constantly needing adjustments. I'm sure there's a fix for that, but I gave it away. I have several Our Generation doll stands and love them, but they're no longer selling them at Target. But THIS I will do! Again, thank you❣️

    I use the paper towel holders too. I will usually check them at the store to try and get the more stable ones. :). Sometimes not so easy! I have thought of doing the cardboard bottom and covering it with fabric to give it more weight on the bottom to help with the tipping issue and to make them look better. They also could be spray painted white or black for better appeal. I had not thought of the belt idea which is awesome and a great idea to hold 2 dolls on one stand! That is genius! Plus when you have a just display dolls section it’s all about how many you can fit and this is a perfect way to achieve this, nice job!

      Thanks - I have a few outfits that will always require an AG/MLA/OG stand because of the "poofiness" (Glinda dress, Tiana costume, etc) but for most outfits, this just makes so much more sense for our collection. And yes - if someone doesn't like the look of them, there are plenty of options to change that a bit.

  • @starryeyeschick
    @starryeyeschick 11 місяців тому +2

    My mom had the same idea with using the paper towel holder! Your little tweaks are perfect. I still like the AG stands for the aesthetic, and the square bases fit my shelves best…but this is clever.

    • @agtakesover
      @agtakesover  11 місяців тому

      Oh, the AG stands are definitely prettier. But given the size of our collection and how high up the shelves are anyway, this swap was a no-brainer. It gave me more space and freed up most of the AG stands to take down and use in the basement (I kept some upstairs to display the girls wearing big dresses like Glinda's and Tiana's gowns)

      I will say that since making this, I've modified it slightly. I use elastic and clasps instead of the velcro. Less messy, less risk of snags, and it wasn't any more costly. But other than that change...yeah - this is what I use and I LOVE them.

    Great idea!
    You could cover the cardboard with the wood contact paper from Dollar Tree and it would look even nicer. If you covered up the bottom first, and then poured sand in the 'back' before also covering up the top, sealing it in there, that might provide adequate weight if you're just using it to hold one doll.

    • @agtakesover
      @agtakesover  11 місяців тому

      I was also thinking of ways to do add weight to make it less likely to topple for holding single dolls. Sand would work. And yeah, you could definitely make the cardboard look much better if your dolls were going to be on a lower shelf. Since ours are above eye level it doesn't matter to me, but contact paper is a great option!

      Right?! I try not to turn their heads 90 degrees because when I see them that way it's creepy to me, but somewhere between 45 and 80 degrees allows me to see their faces clearly enough without imagining the head-spinning-vomiting scene from The Exorcist.

    Great idea! Probably wouldn't be needed for AG dolls but on the metal kieser(?) stands I cover the round bottom with cheap felt glued to help prevent the feet from slipping, works really well with high heeled shoes. You could do the same on the card board if needed.

      If your doll just wears dresses, I don't think you'd need the Velcro but just to be safe I'd recommend some weight on the "other side" if you're using it as a stand for just one doll (better safe than sorry).
