No big deal for games, I could finish NieR: Automata with my brother's assist, but for UA-cam videos, Auto-generated subtitles and the Auto-translate feature are not reliable at all. I couldn't finish Clemp's Drakengard/Nier video series because of that. I hope future videos can have CC.
The way Automata was promoted made my experience with it 10 times better because there was so much I couldn't possibly see coming. Welp time to go replay it

Serbian Crusader, well, when I finished Automata on... [checks] ...17 May (!) -- I know, I know, 8 weeks is a snail's pace, but I combed through pretty much everything before letting my save file go -- I tried to think of *what* it would take for another game to beat it in 2017, as Automata was such a transcendent experience, but could not come up with a potential candidate. So, yeah, for the rest of the year, it remained Game of the Year to me :)
ValkyrieAurora and Clemps were basically the people who introduced me to the wacky world of Yoko Taro. Seeing them working together in a video fills me with joy.
I downloaded the demo going into it with the mindset of "wow this is fun random hack n slash." but It is so much more and I had so much fun with it.. But the thing that blew my mind was the music in the demo it's 90% the reason I had to get this game. If a game has good soundtrack i'm sold...It's my weakness.
Man, my first thoughts playing this was that we were going to be introduced to some kind of turn coat plot twist around the time A2 first entered the picture, and that Yorha were the bad guys all along. Then the three of us would be the defectors that's got to put an end to it once and for all.... But then the Spanish Inquisiton happened, so that was fun...
Technically, Yorha is kinda villainous. The entire project was a lie so androids could have something to fight for: Humanity's eventual return to Earth. In order to keep this lie, Yorha like 9S had to be killed over and over again by Type E models like 2B (2E) since they dug in too deep and knew more than they were supposed to. The Commander forcing 2B to keep killing her friend/lover is pretty evil.
Puppr In a Tea cup Indeed. Knowing all this, and seeing 2B refuse to let the Commander go once her and 9S fled the bunker was pretty intense. She still remained loyal even after the bitch forced her to do things she didn't want.
@@Kingdom850 isnt YorHa made from the same parts of the "Machines". So technically they are killing their own kinda to fight for a extinct species because of some god Robot that also exists within the system that Square Enix made which means... SQUARE ENIX IS THE REAL BAD GUYS!(sorry for mind fuck)
yeah, i heard of drakengard 3 way before its release and was a bit interested, but never heard of it later, so i just forgot about it and never remembered it even existed until people mentioned the game when talking about nier automata

@@KOTEBANAROT Not many people would play those games till the end by the story or soundtrack alone because gameplay was never a strong point in Taro's games until Automata, this is one of the reasons it got so famous.
I completely agree. I remember making a list after I finished the game of what wasn’t told about in the trailers. The way the body system works, the machines having emotions and the hacking. It’s amazing they were able to keep so much hidden.
technically the demo implied the machines have emotions, 9S just kept telling 2B to ignore this fact. And with the plot of Nier, it was safe to assume there'd be a twist like that anyway. The twist in Automata's case honestly with the machines was more in how quick you learned of their humanity, as opposed to slowly learning this fact about the Shades in Nier.

I was hyped for the game on launch from watching yours and Clemps's videos on Nier 1 and the psycho that is Taro. I expected weird things and twists but nothing compared to the actual game I ended up playing. I'm a grown ass man and a game's credits made me cry.

TBH, the thing that sold me on the game was your lore summary video. I don't remember where I found it, if it was UA-cam suggestions or an article on a site like Kotaku but after the Lore video I grabbed the Automata demo and it was a day one purchase for me. Such an epic demo. I didn't care about the game any more or less until the lore video motivated me to try the demo. It may have waited until the bargain bin if it were not for the demo too so the two things in harmony gave me enough of an introduction to the world, environment, music, and gameplay to get me really excited for the end product.
Nice to see you guys collaborating, I've enjoyed videos from both of your channels separately. Incidentally your video on the lore of Drakengard/Nier helped convince me to buy Nier:Automata, and it is easily my favourite game of the year. Cheers to both of you.

I knew the music used in this video sounded familiar! Great choice! Avid XIV player here, so I got excited to hear it and had to rewind a few times to catch what you and Clemps were saying. Interestingly enough, I actually stopped playing XIV so that I could focus on Automata. So worth it. Also still having trouble trying to explain, without spoiling, how amazing this game is to friends who are curious about it.:D
When I first saw A2, 2B and 9S on the poster after finishing Nier, I thought that: 2B = Yonah 9S = Emil (I thought he found a way to get his body back plus the blindfold he was wearing made me sure even more) A2 = Kaine And I thought it was awesome how all the 3 are gonna be playable. And then I was a bit disappointed when I learnt of the actual names. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the story and the soundtrack just as much as the prequel.

Good to see another vid from you. I had not thought about this topic too much. But, for me, after having played the game all the way through and experiencing the perplexing anxiety of the final credits followed by an opportunity to selflessly help other players, I now believe the game is vastly underrated here in the west. Part of that, I believe, is a lack of promotion of Automata. Don't get me wrong, I think you are absolutely right about the marketing and showcasing of the game. It hit the sweet spot. But I also think they could have done more to send that same message out to a larger population of players. Many gamers still think Automata is a niche game that appeals only to Nier purists and Yoko Taro fanboys and fangirls. But, it is so much more than that. IMO, Nier Automata is the definition of what a game should be, a work of high art unrivaled by television or film. My apologies for gushing over the game. Lol. Thanks again for your video.
You explained the upsides very well, but I dare to say this is also comes with it's downsides - when I mention this game everyone who didn't play it or only for a few hours goes "2B or not 2B" or "2B booty game" when it's actually really not that. For many it still looks like a big cool fanservice fighting game without much content besides that. There are quite a lot of 2B and 9S cosplayers as well who never played the game and therefore A2 lacks quite a lot of attention.
xx123manxx that’s not true, I played 2B’s route for 34 hours, which is more than double my playtime for 9S and A2 combined (finished the game just now at 61 hours). You could maybe argue 9S has more playtime than 2B if you choose to ignore most sidequests till his playthrough, but A2? She’s only half of the third playthrough, 2B is definitely the main character longer than A2 is.
I'm here only in 2020 because I didn't see one little drop of the promotional material. Don't know what circles I had to run in to have heard of this when it came out, but I would have been on board.

I never saw any of the promotional material whatsoever before I played the game. My friend have been telling me that the game was so GOOD for months then, but I never listened to him when he tried to sway me into buying the game. Last month though, I just picked up the game so suddenly after seeing the cover, thinking, "I like the blindfolds." Oh boy. I didn't knew what I was getting myself into. The suffering in this entire series is unreal. Shits happen so fast in route C. I wasn't expecting any of it and was really shocked with what happened. Then I saw ending D and I just. I just stared at my TV screen for several minutes, not knowing what to think or feel before suddenly I burst into tears. Then I finished ending C and E and I went to play the original Nier which made me cry until my eyes were swollen, went back to Automata and finished Emil's Determination, and cried even more. It's been one month and I still haven't moved on from this goddamn series and all the pain they made me feel. I feel so deceived. My friend told me that the game was "fun" and there I was, drenched in my own tears. Moral of the story is, you should never buy a game just because you were lured by your kink. Don't be like me.
I didn't even know we would get to play as A2. I never saw any Trailers (bought the game off recommendation and never would've played it otherwise) and the 'trailer' that appears in the Menu screen when you AFK is all I got. I was under the assumption that 2B would 'go rouge' and the Bridge scene was her after taking damage, and the A2 we see in the Menu AFK Trailer was just a post-Yorha 2B. So it caught me off guard when 2B got ded.
To sum up the main reason we didnt mind being decieved by the marketing was that the actual finished product was BETTER than what was marketed (rather than worse) especially in context of the game industry that we are used to be dissapointed by deceptively advertised products
Honestly, 2B dying was by far the saddest part for me. She was a super kind character, but she always hurt people she cared about so she kept her distance. Her whole arc builds up her finally getting close with someone, when she just freaking dies. This was also sad because 9S really liked 2B, but learned that she was there to keep him contained. The second chapter ends with him deciding that he'd willingly be confined forever just so he can stay with the person he loves. AND THEN THEY FREAKING KILLED HER! The true ending is the only thing that could bring any sort of comfort.
I play FFXIV so much, it took me some reading of the comments to realise the music was from there. I'm too used to it. If Steel Reason started playing in the middle of my mathematics lesson, I wouldn't bat an eye. I'd still flinch if the Garleans came and took over the school. Then I'd join the legion.
I also think that, because of the change of the protagonist change for different audiences in the first Nier, making the 'main' character a sexy android made US audiences accept the character and 9S came to us untouched. Which you know, GOOD. Best bait and switch in a long time. I've often wondered if 9S is.. so young? Isn't because Yoko was salty about the first Nier and managed to get US audiences to play the not-rough character they're not used to.
I finished the game one week ago and I really can’t get through the events of route C and the mind-blowing plot twists I’ve got. This game is a masterpiece and I’m really looking forward for the second part (Rumours) and what will happen to 2B, 9S and A2
by the time i had played nier automata i had watched the TFS play through of route A, and a bit of one of the teams individual members personal play through (also to end of route A but going into B as well) and at this point i decided i should get and play it. i managed to go in with 0 route c spoilers except for some relatively minor shots of the very beginning of it, and it completely caught me off guard. 10/10
I kind of made my own theories based of the promo and I was glad most of it didn't happen because nothing I could come up reaches the genius of Yoko Taro.Also I thought you would only play A2 in branch C.

But, for me, after having played the game all the way through and experiencing the perplexing anxiety of the final credits followed by an opportunity to selflessly help other players, I now believe the game is vastly underrated here in the west. Part of that, I believe, is a lack of promotion of Automata.
Don't get me wrong, I think you are absolutely right about the marketing and showcasing of the game. It hit the sweet spot. But I also think they could have done more to send that same message out to a larger population of players. Many gamers still think Automata is a niche game that appeals only to Nier purists and Yoko Taro fanboys and fangirls. But, it is so much more than that. IMO, Nier Automata is the definition of what a game should be, a work of high art unrivaled by television or film.

This game is fucking amazing
You explained the upsides very well, but I dare to say this is also comes with it's downsides - when I mention this game everyone who didn't play it or only for a few hours goes "2B or not 2B" or "2B booty game" when it's actually really not that. For many it still looks like a big cool fanservice fighting game without much content besides that.
There are quite a lot of 2B and 9S cosplayers as well who never played the game and therefore A2 lacks quite a lot of attention.
I think A2 not having that many cosplayers is cause it's really hard to cosplay her compared to 2B and 9S
A2s cosplay would be ripped, revealing rags and body paint. Why would you do that compared to wearing actual uniforms and a wig instead?

xx123manxx that’s not true, I played 2B’s route for 34 hours, which is more than double my playtime for 9S and A2 combined (finished the game just now at 61 hours). You could maybe argue 9S has more playtime than 2B if you choose to ignore most sidequests till his playthrough, but A2? She’s only half of the third playthrough, 2B is definitely the main character longer than A2 is.
I didn't actually watched any trailers, in fear fo getting even minor spoilers. I think it was the best way to play this masterpiece.

I'm here only in 2020 because I didn't see one little drop of the promotional material. Don't know what circles I had to run in to have heard of this when it came out, but I would have been on board.
consolewise it was ps4 exlcusive for a while, so i didnt pay it no mind. it would come up in text (articles, etc.) that the game was good. I saw it as a lame japanese anime waifu game. BOIII WAS I WRONG

I never saw any of the promotional material whatsoever before I played the game. My friend have been telling me that the game was so GOOD for months then, but I never listened to him when he tried to sway me into buying the game. Last month though, I just picked up the game so suddenly after seeing the cover, thinking, "I like the blindfolds."
Oh boy.
I didn't knew what I was getting myself into. The suffering in this entire series is unreal. Shits happen so fast in route C. I wasn't expecting any of it and was really shocked with what happened. Then I saw ending D and I just. I just stared at my TV screen for several minutes, not knowing what to think or feel before suddenly I burst into tears. Then I finished ending C and E and I went to play the original Nier which made me cry until my eyes were swollen, went back to Automata and finished Emil's Determination, and cried even more. It's been one month and I still haven't moved on from this goddamn series and all the pain they made me feel. I feel so deceived. My friend told me that the game was "fun" and there I was, drenched in my own tears.
Moral of the story is, you should never buy a game just because you were lured by your kink. Don't be like me.
I didn't even know we would get to play as A2. I never saw any Trailers (bought the game off recommendation and never would've played it otherwise) and the 'trailer' that appears in the Menu screen when you AFK is all I got. I was under the assumption that 2B would 'go rouge' and the Bridge scene was her after taking damage, and the A2 we see in the Menu AFK Trailer was just a post-Yorha 2B.
So it caught me off guard when 2B got ded.

To sum up the main reason we didnt mind being decieved by the marketing was that the actual finished product was BETTER than what was marketed (rather than worse) especially in context of the game industry that we are used to be dissapointed by deceptively advertised products

Honestly, 2B dying was by far the saddest part for me. She was a super kind character, but she always hurt people she cared about so she kept her distance. Her whole arc builds up her finally getting close with someone, when she just freaking dies. This was also sad because 9S really liked 2B, but learned that she was there to keep him contained. The second chapter ends with him deciding that he'd willingly be confined forever just so he can stay with the person he loves. AND THEN THEY FREAKING KILLED HER! The true ending is the only thing that could bring any sort of comfort.
i was cool with it, till she said 'nines' 😢... and yet theres soo much outside material that adds much weight to this game
I'd love to put Yoko Taro and David Lynch in the same room and see the result.

I play FFXIV so much, it took me some reading of the comments to realise the music was from there. I'm too used to it. If Steel Reason started playing in the middle of my mathematics lesson, I wouldn't bat an eye. I'd still flinch if the Garleans came and took over the school. Then I'd join the legion.
I also think that, because of the change of the protagonist change for different audiences in the first Nier, making the 'main' character a sexy android made US audiences accept the character and 9S came to us untouched. Which you know, GOOD. Best bait and switch in a long time.
I've often wondered if 9S is.. so young? Isn't because Yoko was salty about the first Nier and managed to get US audiences to play the not-rough character they're not used to.

I finished the game one week ago and I really can’t get through the events of route C and the mind-blowing plot twists I’ve got. This game is a masterpiece and I’m really looking forward for the second part (Rumours) and what will happen to 2B, 9S and A2

by the time i had played nier automata i had watched the TFS play through of route A, and a bit of one of the teams individual members personal play through (also to end of route A but going into B as well) and at this point i decided i should get and play it. i managed to go in with 0 route c spoilers except for some relatively minor shots of the very beginning of it, and it completely caught me off guard. 10/10
I kind of made my own theories based of the promo and I was glad most of it didn't happen because nothing I could come up reaches the genius of Yoko Taro.Also I thought you would only play A2 in branch C.
