    I love the fact that these characters are written so well. Most strong female characters are written as "guns and fighting i am strong pew pew pew pew" rather than portraying them as a genuine human, who are more relatable than the standard ones we see all the time (i.e Black Widow, Rubi from 'Wet'). It's nice to see some changes in the industry in this contemporary year of 2013

      Allow another fellow Gravity Rush fan to chime in! Kat's personality is just infectious. Anytime she opens her mouth, she is cute as hell, always cheerful, and lighthearted. On top of that, she is the type who cannot turn a blind eye to those who need help and does her best to save whoever she can. Hope that sums it up for you Fraaz and I also hope I saved you some time typing Arausito.

      I thought Black Widow had some human qualities besides being a badass. She felt genuine fear when Bruce was turning into Hulk and had real desires for a normal life rather than be the killing machine she was made to be, as she explained in AoU. She also had regrets with her choice in sterilization which made her give up that chance in having a family like the one her partner, Hawkeye, has. She compared herself a "monster". Many feminists felt this demeaned her for some reason and the impression they got from this was that of her wanting to be a housewife and having kids was all that mattered, when it was just a way to prove her point in how she purposely gave up this chance in normalcy and now feels regret and longing for a redo.

    Zero is a strong female protagonist AND an anti-hero, that's what makes her better than most. Strong females are usually Chaotic Good, Neutral Good or Lawful Good and never really given any major flaws in their character.

      Zero works because she reconciles those facets of her character in a human way.
      She isn’t kind generally, but kind in her own way when it needs it.
      She’s murderous and violent and won’t bat an eye at the new Red Sea she’s made, but she never expects to come out of it any better than any of her victims. Her resolve to die is why she can look death head on and give it so freely because she accepts it will be her turn soon.
      Her femininity is defined by design and attitude but it’s not an all encompassing attribute.
      Ironically what makes her stand out is how like anyone else she can be.
      She’s not trying to break some mold or stereotype, she’s not trying to prove anything.
      Just a dark past, a grim duty and an impending cataclysm. Doing what needs to be done in as effective, straightforward and simple manner as she can as a person.
      She’s a strong female protagonist because she’s a person first, gender is secondary.

      Two is interesting. Theoretically she could be the strongest one because her raw strength grew with each passing day. Her mistake... was that she lacked wisdom. She put too much trust on her strength, optimism, and ability to love and being loved by everyone, just like your typical cheerful optimistic anime girl trope. She trusted her handsome lover too much and wasn't aware of, or perhaps even chose to disregard his stupidity. In the end, his well-intended decision had ill ramifications that ruined everything she cherished, and as it turned out, she wasn't strong enough to live with the consequences.
      So girls, be careful of the guys you pick, alright?

      Mine is either ending A or D.
      The first because Zero’s reaction to her own death rounds off her character in such a potent way that makes narrative sense.
      The second because it’s the ending where the tragedy can end, where Mikhail and Zero can finally say goodbye, or rather goodnight, when she finally calls him by name and put closure on the whole tragic story.
      Bittersweet but fitting.
      And if Accord is right, Zero can still be alive somehow, somewhere. Maybe get a little bit of the life she could have lived.

  • @Seifer_PT
    @Seifer_PT 6 років тому +58

    Can't add much to what's been said already, but an interesting trait in Zero is how, to her, killing is a pain in the ass. Normally that trait is written as a thing to make a character look edgy or cool for no apparent reason. Well, turns out it really is bothersome for her because she needed to do it to stay alive before being infected, and needs to do it to...be dead, I guess, after being infected. It's like mosquitos constantly poking at you. You just want them to go away.
    Also, it may reflect Taro's opinion about killing in video games at that point. I remember an interview where he mentions it's common to get achievements in video games where you kill a certain amount of enemies. If you do that in real life, you're a psychopathic serial killer. So, it might also be a reference to how the player is likely desensitized to it as well.
    She's rude and dirty, yes, but there's a certain purity in her despite all that, as it's so described in the video, as it's shown in her determination to stop the flower. It's her perfect chance to get back at the world for treating her miserably, to let the flower grow and destroy everything, yet she rejects that.
    I'd also say she may be humble in a way. She could have the whole world worshipping her but she can see right through the flower. Pun somewhat intended. It's not some godsend gift. She's not a goddess. Zero is just some girl who got caught up in a fucked up life and death. She can acknowledge that, endure and persevere. Maybe not humble but down to earth. I love this character.

    I read Zero's novella and it's amazing. That she was a mass-murder of hundreds, even entire families - elderly and children - just to break into their homes and eat their foods, and yet we still feel sympathy for her because even she isn't sure why she does it.
    Read the story on her wiki yourself. It's amazing and heartbreaking!

    It's a shame that my mother passed away cause she loved Metal Gear Solid 3 The Boss and she probably would have liked Drakengard 3. She told me that she hate it how women in media portrayed because they seem too unrealistic or one-dimensional. Also zero reminds me a lot of my mother she curses a lot she's very selfish at times but strong that's the one word that comes to mind she's strong. She's just like zero she went through hell all her life treated like shit and still try to do the right thing.
    I can't help but feel that Metal Gear Solid 5 quiet even though she was controversial was not the character she was originally intended to be I generally believe that the fan theory about Quiet being Chico is true and Konami intervene and made them change its.

    I feel like I would have appreciated Zero more as a character if she was part of a game that took itself a little more seriously. Unlike Caim, or Nier, the horrible things that she's forced to do are played up for laughs for roughly half the plot. So she just acts bored and angry, making constant sex jokes with the disciples and treating the mass murder like it's an annoyance that she's too lazy to avoid more-so than an emotional burden that she has to undertake.
    I actually ended up liking the other intoner's backstory manga and some of the DLC a lot more than the main in-game story. It made me wish that Drakengard 3 treated the intoners as more of an ensemble cast that played around with their group dynamic, rather than cementing things to Zero's perspective.

Zero gave up everything, practically her very being, only to then have to go on a sacrificial pilgrimage and lose not only her pride but also everyone she cared about to ultimately achieve what she saw as right.
    It was incredibly fitting and therapeutic to find that in the end, One was the only Intoner to not only understand exactly what Zero was doing, but fully sympathize with her as she aimed to do the very same in her own way. One was the most like Zero now, in her centered, cold, yet resolute nature so I like to think that part of Zero she represented was the most motivated and where Zero pulls the majority of her strength of will.

      @sugarysweet07 6 років тому +49

      But this logic is part of the problem, you're defaulting "badass Alpha McChad" to "male". Women are just as varied as men, and there are ultra butch Chad Thundercock women out there. That doesn't make them any less female. There is no one singular way to write female characters. A female character who does badass shit without crying or having motherly instincts or being feminine doesn't mean she's just written to be a man.

    • @fifteenbongos
      @fifteenbongos 6 років тому +31

      a cat I think what he's trying to say is that writers will default to writing strong female characters as the stereotypically hyper-masculine beefcake to satisfy their audience, with emphasis on "default to." Ultimately, that doesn't encourage writers to make complex characters, as that archetype always was pretty one-dimensional. You can certainly have female characters in that archetype, but we need more complex, more human female characters to also populate the category of strong female characters if we want to push proper female representation in media forward.

    • @astolfo6436
      @astolfo6436 6 років тому +16

      Pretty much what Stella said, hyper masculine women are the outliers in society but in games media they seem to be to the norm whereas male characters more closely resemble average men, ok they may be idealized versions of the average man but I've met plenty of men like that.
      This is part of the reason that female protagonists tend to be mostly sexless as well, it's very difficult to write a masculine woman with a male love interest. There is nothing wrong with allowing female protagonists to be feminine in games.

    I haven't even played Drakengard 3 and yet it is the best game (story wise) in a series that I consider to be one of the best of all time. Wow. Incredible. I really do hope that a remake is coming for all the games and Drakengard 4!

    Great video! I felt the same way playing through the game. At first it felt like the sisters were just the kinda tropes of various different archetypes, but knowing how drakengard was in the past, i knew there would always be layers and mroal complexities added. And by the end i loved each and every one of them especially zero. And you said it so well, that we need female characters who are ugly, desperate and selfish. We need characters who are somewhere in the middle. Again amazing video!

    ...Except, you know, for the fact that whispering sweet nothings would probably make her ears bleed, and touching skin would probably cause intense disgust if not excruciating pain for her, and even just breathing the air around her would make her want to vomit. Or that she would probably just not care in the slightest for a mere human's existence. Or that the entire romance option would be a hopeless path to ruin and despair, no matter how smoothly things (probably wouldn't) go beforehand. Or that I'd probably earn the scorn of an entire nation just for daring to exist beside their goddess. Or...

    I haven't completed the game yet but once you play through it the nicest thing in my opinion is how the story unravels. Playing through it right now it is kinda always on my mind of what, why and how things are happening. The game is always making me question the motives of the characters and why certain things are happening. That to me is smart story telling.

    Agreed on all points, the Intoners were quite possibly my favorite part of the game(and possibly, my favorite product of Yoko Taro and his wonderfully dark mind). His portrayal just made them, well...Whenever you can make me think one thing, then add in something seemingly completely contrary, and yet that STILL makes sense and fits so well with the character...It's just a beautiful thing to behold.Anywho, nice video! Looking forward to the next one, whatever it is you decide to do.

    Also, we should stop looking for strong female characters. Instead focus on good written characters overall. The reason why these women succeed in being complex and well, "strong", is because the were written as *people* first.

    • @Sorain1
      @Sorain1 4 роки тому +13

      Exactly. Good character writing is the most important thing. For nearly any writing work, write the role and only THEN consider things like gender, or ethnic background, religion, sexuality or whatever the buzzword happens to be. Ellen Ripley, like every other character in Alien was written without regard to gender and then cast with the actor or actress who's audition seemed best.

    • @scarlettptheoriginal
      @scarlettptheoriginal 10 місяців тому

      Sure, but the reason why people want "strong female characters" is because most female characters in media are solely written as "love interest to the male character". There are already plenty of well-written, complex male characters - I want to see well-written, complex characters of other genders too.

    You've definitely made me very heckin interested in this series and yoko taros work in general as well as the atelier series
    I saw ayesha on sale for switch and I got it because along with nier the dusk series has piqued my interest given that they both deal with very end of the world scenarios... Automata captured a lot of the things I've been feeling in the current situation in its own way and definitely became special to me but I don't think I would have pursued it if not for your videos and same for haunting ground I related in my own ways to some of the feelings you described though I lacked the traditional female upbringing as a trans woman aspects of it still felt very relatable and it made me curious to try to view that perspective that I obviously have an interest in but missed in the exact ways it is portrayed therein your channel has helped a lot the past few sleepless days and I hope you are doing well in all of this!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

    I love the way drakengard 3 has such interesting characters because without them then our story is pretty pointless
    I find them all very deep and textured characters, though some are more well done and others are somewhat half baked
    5 seems very one dimetional and isn't as much as you first think probably do to her short stay in plot
    4 looks like a angel at first then zero kinda hints at her being a "little" off
    3 is interesting I find octa more interesting but still she's a neat little... seamstress?
    2 she's a sympathetic character and has more interesting stuff in the main game like how did this mess happen
    Zero is fascinating given her horrible beginnings you'd expect her to want to watch the world burn but nope she's a paradox lots of killing now but it's the only way to stop this apocalyptic orchestra
    One seems like one of the weaker ones to me she's memorable but as a character the others outshine her the "evil" book worm does some interesting stuff but she's one of the more bland in game
    They are all good character's it's just they are in a game that isn't all there, the story is awesome and so are the characters but the game it's self doesn't hold up with them

    Cool video. i have always had problems with Zero's personality. I read her novella and the manga, and i barely understand how she develops her sense of responsibility. before her resurection she killed so many innocents without understand why. Of course she is capable of caring and loving people who can accept her such as Michael/Mikail, Accord and the disciples but in the end there is nothing to justify her actions. she doesn't know how to solve a problems except by killing. This is her main problem and the reason why there is a story: because she never tried to explain the problem to the other intoners. because in the end none of 6 sisters is evil (except maybe 3). the story was more comprehensible with Caim in the first game because we saw him go through a lot of tragedies. but when the 3 game came out, we received poor informations about the characters and have to wait until the novella.

    I really like hearing about the good aspects of Drakengard 3. I've put only a few hours in and I still really like it, despite the technical issues. I think there is merit to the attempts made in this game that shouldn't be ignored because the game is a very mixed bag. Also, on the topic of strong female protagonists, I'd recommend Tales Of Berseria. Velvet Crowe is one of my favorite game characters ever and is a really great protagonist, at least from my point of view. Awesome video as always! An additional to the Drakenguard series. How wonderful! It's really nice to see someone appreciating the game even years after. This is my favorite game. I am been dying to grow older just to play this game. It contains some content I am not able to watch but I still did anyway. Everything is perfect for me. This is what I look in for a game. It may not seem to be a masterpiece compared to the the older Drakenguard series , but I love this one the most. It may seem weird to name this as a masterpiece , but this is my opinion.
    The humour is just hilarious , even if it's sexual. The gore and stuff... It works fine I guess. The whole plot behind it is the most impacting for me. Zero though , I love her.

    Honestly what I love about this game is the rich cast of colorful characters (figuratively and literally), and it's nice to finally see a set of interesting females as the main cast in a video game. A lot of media (especially western) can't seem to pull that off without seeming cheesy or forced.
