Do not rule this out. This is a top 3 jury contender and I think it could pull a konstrakta and do surprisingly well in the televote. It's a dark horse. I love that the song is inspired by the poetry of Lorca and a lullaby sung to a baby. Apparently Eaea is what grandmother's say to babies to calm them before sleeping. It is staged impeccably, passionate, hypnotic and mesmerising. Its my favourite this year and I think it will remain there. I'm getting winner vibes tbh

In an interview Blanca Paloma (in Spanish. She doesn't speak English) explained the song is inspired by a lullaby her grandmother used to sing when she was a child. The vertical "curtains" is a representation of the shawl her grandmother used to wear (a traditional "mantón de Manila). The lullaby lyrics have a surreal García Lorca touch. The song is a type of flamenco song called "bulería" (there are many types of flamenco songs or "palos". Note the rythmic pattern: 123-123-12-12-12 stressing each number 1, which, by the way, I've noticed is the same used at the beginning of Concierto de Aranjuez.
Thanks for your reaction. I've just subscribed.

My take is that the white spot in the curtains is the moon. When she pretends to have an arch she is shooting to the heart. Like Cupid. It is the love for the child. Then it goes into the bright red lights which I interpreted like the baby's heart beating with love for the grandmother. This is my personal interpretation and no idea if what Blanca Paloma intended us to interpret.🤣

EAEA is a flamenco lullaby. EAEA is an onomatopoeia that Spanish mothers do to calm their children while they are crying. The song tells the story of a mother who wants to be buried in the moon when she dies to see her child every night except one (the new moon day). The red strings of the staging are very typical in the Spanish flamenco costumes. Also the song has references to the poems of Federico Garcia Lorca, one of the most important poets of Spain. This is the most Spanish entry we ever had and we are so proud of her

I don't think there's anything that I don't love about this entry: her vocal is perfect, the staging is fantastic, the camera work is great, the dance moves and the colours and the light are all amazing... It just conjures up so many images from Andalucía for me, which is the region in Spain where I studied for a year and where I have travelled the most. Whatever the result in Liverpool, Spain can be so proud of this.

I think she’ll storm the Jury vote. It’s sheer Spanishness, that some people don’t get (and I wasn’t sure at first), is the very thing that will make it stand out as a winning song and she has a flawless vocal and brilliant staging. The televote could go either way of course but I really hope she ends up in the top ten. At the moment I’m thinking quite likely top five and she might just win.

The lyrics are actually an expression of a grandmother's deep and fierce kind of love for her grandchild, expressed in a very poetic way. Blanca Paloma wrote it herself in honour of her deceased grandmother and the lineage of women in her family. And yes the red curtain is inspired by the fringes of the red shawl her grandma used to wear (a traditional Spanish "mantón de manila") and the circle of white light on the floor is clearly the full moon as you will understand by the lyrics. Blanca Paloma worked as a stage designer before and designed the staging herself.
In the song, the grandmother is talking directly to the child and saying things like:
"Come to me, my child. come and sleep next to me, I'll keep you warm"
"My baby when I die may they bury me in the moon so every night I can see you"
"Come to me my child, my little one, my love... at night, your eyes like suns shine light on me".

The song itself, the music, is a bulería, one of the most recognizable and joyful forms of flamenco (included as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCU), and adds a modern touch of electronic rhythm to it.
The theme and lyrics come from the point of view of a woman singing a lullaby, trying to put her crying baby to sleep ('Eaea' is a lullaby sound in Spain).
The acting and staging are very "lorquianas" (full of winks at the famous poet Federico García Lorca) and represent a ritual, an evocation of their ancestors. Especially to his late grandmother, to whom this song is inspired and dedicated, as she taught him and sang flamenco and lullabies to him.
The repetitive pattern of the rhythm, the choruses and the rhythmic claps are meant to be mesmerizing and mesmerizing to connect with the energy of the experience. The movements of his hands work as a compliment and a call to the above.
Blanca Paloma starts her staging inside a circular curtain inspired by the manila shawl that symbolizes protection, motherhood, in fact she said that it could be seen as a kind of womb and together with her stage partners, she transforms her performance into a ritual of invocation, trance and catharsis, to connect with their ancestors and their indelible legacy. An explosion of sensitivity, truth and claw
The white circle represents the moon, where, as the lyrics say, she wants to be buried when she dies so that she can care for her child every night but one ('new moon').
First he kneels looking up, then he kneels down again, always with his hand outstretched.
She then shoots a flaming arrow and sets it on fire (pulsing red light, heartbeat, blood, death) Finally, goes up to the shrine to finish the ritual in ecstasy.

I’m sure the live performance and the vocals will make most of the others look more like amateurs and this will also attract votes, it is just a too well put together moment. Yeah I can see this surpassing Norway or Finland if they choose Cha Cha Cha thanks to the juries. Imo winning chances pretty decent, top 5 pretty much guaranteed I would say. And TBH I still find this song belonging more to a traditional music taste than Cha Cha Cha or Queen of Kings. The 30+ audience will vote this more imo.

If they want to predict a poor result, they use "Fulenn." It's a spectrum when it comes to these very localized songs that are given a modern electronic edge. They can do very well or not. The song itself (music, singing, clapping) is a bulería, kind of a specific 'subgenere' of flamenco with a modern twist of an electronic beat.
The topic and the lyrics come from the POV of a woman singing a lullaby, trying to put her crying baby to sleep ('Eaea' is a cooing sound in Spain)
The performance and staging are the ones of a ritual, summoning her ancestors. Specially her late grandma, wich this song is inspired by and dedicated to, because she taught and used to sing flamenco and lullabies to her.
The repetitive pattern of the beat, backing vocals and rythmic clapping are intended to be entrancing and hypnotizing for connecting with the energy of the experience. Her hand movements work as a praise and a calling to the above.
The red threads are a reference to the fringes of a traditional 'mantón' (shawl) simbolizing protection, motherhood, in fact she said it could be seen sort of womb-shaped. Actually she worked as a costume and stage set designer, as she did here too.
The white circle represents the moon, where, as the lyrics say, she wants to be buried in when she dies, so she will be able to watch over her child everynight but one ('newmoon')
First she kneels looking up, later she kneels again looking downwards, always with a reaching hand.
Then she shoots a flaming arrow and lights it on fire (red pulsing light, heartbeat, blood, death) Finally the priestess gets on the shrine to end the ritual in ecstasy.

Great vid, thx! In Spain you say "ea!" and it means sort of "there you are" but if you hear "ea ea ea" probably somebody is trying to shush or to comfort a weeping child. Flamenco songs try to pinch your heart (pellizco) with heartbreaking stories, so Blanca Paloma pictured for me the image of this woman asking her child to think of her, every time he or she stares at the moon, where she wants to be buried. It makes you wonder if this woman's life has come to an end.

For example, if this year ends up being like 2022 it won’t do very well since last year we had a lot of ballads and the votes would get split. But, if this year is more like 2021 then I see a possibility of this doing something similar to Voilà by Barbara Pravi (maybe not that high but around 5th place). In any case, this will also depend on the final staging

I agree with you. It may do well, it may not. But Spain has a top quality cultural entry to be proud of, a masterpiece which may be understood or not. I hope it does well, not only for PB but to encourage other countries to innovate and stay true their roots. To be more creative and brave. The music is becoming too globalised. I want to learn more about the music from different regions of Europe, to hear them experiment and deliver great quality, even if I do not like it. I hope Spain will continue down this road but it will be nice that following Blanca we do not just bet on flamenco roots and explore the roots of other regions of Spain.

Spain is a real sleeping giant for the win. I've read people compare this to Fulenn and Shum, but for me this is far more comparable to Volia (oh! it's way to French and old fashioned) or 1944 (too out of the box and wail-y).
Y'know, those songs finished 2nd and 1st respectively based on a combination of jury bait and a staging that left viewers transfixed to their TVs for the whole three minutes of the performance.
I think on the night lots of viewers vote for maybe two or three songs - their favourite bop or whatever, but also their favourite most out of the box performance, a la Konstrakta or Zdob si Zdub last year...
Quite how the bookies still have this ranked 12th is beyond me. I'm not a gambler, by any means, only ever set foot in a betting shop twice in my life, but £20 on this at 33-1 is just too stupid an opportunity to miss...

In other acts the crowd is cheering/dancing/swinging, but here they are holding phones recording... On a plus note, they avoided the dreaded huge Moon overhead by using the white circle shot from above, which is a much classier way of doing it. The whole performance is very classy, what Mi Familia should have looked like..., I just wonder if voters would vote for this over giving more sympathy votes to Hearts of Steel. That is the biggest uncertainty of this year, which song will make people "forget" what happened last year. Lastly, I still think the "Big 5" should participate in the semi's, this song would benefit from two chances to listen to it and make sense of what it is by those only watching the finals. Had Benidorm had only a single round, like Eurosong, Agoney would have won. Had Eurosong had two rounds, Connolly might have won. Maybe.

Culturally this is beautiful and daring winner from Spain but i am convinced it us too niche for most of Europe to dig. For all its beauty i really feel Spain are heading for the bottom again. Remember this is a song contest. The visuals are striking and her vocals are amazing but there is no song to latxh onto and ultimately i fear that will condemn the song towards the bottom of the pile come final night. I had the same sinking feeling here in France last year. I live in France and saw how happy they all were with their choice but i was not shocked by the result in final nor will i be for Spain this year. I, like you, am so happy that the Spanish sleeping giant has finally awoke but this seriously scares the crap outta le that this winner could be 2 steps forward and (???) steps back. I hope i wrong. EAEA is an onomatopoeic expression that parents use in Spain while rocking their children to reassure them. The song (electronic flamenco) sung by Blanca Paloma and its staging expresses the desperation of a mother because she would like to take care of and be able to see her baby even after she has died, for this reason one of the phrases is "My child when I die that they bury me in the moon and every night I see you except one" if you look closely you can see in an angle that ascends from the camera how Blanca Paloma is in a white circle (representing the moon) which is from where she will be able to see her baby every night.

Oh! My God Joao not to like you I see you in all the videos of Blanca Paloma expressing the same opinion. It is strange that we consume something that we do not like. I think there can only be two reasons: either we really like it or we are just toxic people. To which of the two do you belong? 😅

Not Lorca. Not lullaby. In truth the song is a spell, witchcraft... It's a full moon gypsy ritual. Listen "son of the moon(Hijo de la Luna- Meccano" A woman invokes the Moon to win the love of a man and get pregnant. Don't play this song to a baby, it will never fall asleep. "Child" is a typical Spanish word to call your boyfriend and an affectionate way of calling people. ¡Mi niño! ¡Te quiero!>> My child! I love you!>> But in Andalusia (Spain) all the people are a child. Are you 55 years old? No problem in Andalusia you are a baby forever. ¡Niño ven aquí!>> child, come here! Blanca... Does not tell the whole truth... It is not an innocent song. It is an invocation to the devil to win eurovision

Perdona, pero qué te has tomado? En España no llamamos a nuestros novios o marido "niño". La canción no es un conjuro, es una nana flamenca y la canción "hijo de la Luna" tampoco.

This is the most Spanish entry we ever had and we are so proud of her.
