I react to the internal selection song "Who the hell is Edgar?" by Teya & Salena, which will represent Austria in Semi Final 2 of Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool, UK in May 2023.

yea i love how much depth the song has beneath the surface, i hope that doesnt go unnoticed by the juries. Itll be a big controversy if this explodes on social media and the jury kill it

Yeah I guess the ghost of Edgar Allan Poe represents the real artist who doesn't get the recognition or profits, while the machine/middlemen of the music business gets the profits.

I like that in making a point about ghost writing and performance/streaming rights within the music industry it’s also a complete and utter earworm.
If they can perform live this could do surprisingly well.

Think they are being critical that in the music industry the writers get forgotten and also If you are not mainstream people are like "who are you" its really clever and the girls are extremely likable aswell
yea thats so true, they come across as really fun and sassy, love it. and female duets have a horrible record at eurovision so will be great to see them successful
I expected this to be obnoxious, jokey and repetitive, but it was none of that and I was actually quite pleasantly surprised.
It’s a well-constructed song with a nice message. It’s a critique of the music industry and how exploitative big companies are of artists, but done in a humorous way and has enough self-awareness to be taken seriously.
Also, I really like Teya. She actually competed in the Serbian PZE in 2020 since she has dual citizenship and I’ve liked her ever since. She has evolved a lot as an artist.
Yeah the commentary behind this song is awesome, I just hope that it translates so that the juries understand it and reward accordingly. I’ve seen them both live both really talented

Because if you answer the question (Who the hell is Edgar?) you go again with the chorus. Aka Egar Allan Poe, Poe, Poe and so on. But it also leaves the question behind: Who writes the songs of the famous singers/bands? And that's not the singer/band, it's the ghostwriter. It's a clever full circle if you want to say that.
The songs starts with: "Oh my God, you're such a good writer /Oh, it's not me, it's Edgar / Who the hell is Edgar?" and ends with the same words: "Who the hell is Edgar?" Now do you see the circle?
Good lyrics, the Bridge in particular (0.003) is a protest against low royalty payments from streaming services. Great tune, amazing energy, and these two women are talented, experienced live vocalists. Semi 2 is saved & this is flying through very likely in a podium position.
I hope the juries don’t murder it 😭

It was so much fun watching the release ,the live chat went crazy.
Don't forget that Edgar Allan Poe also died penniless and was only recognized for his work after his death. Poe worked so hard on his art throughout his life, but never personally saw the monetary reward for it. It seems artists have been getting shafted for a very long time.
I just love how meaningful it is. The whole women will only be taken seriously if there's a guy (edgar) behind the stuff, and them pretending to be guys so that the board will listen to them. Plus the fact its a woman who turns them in. Every visual and the lyrics are so meaningful, and yet it's still such a bop to go along with!

i hadn't heard the snippet so this was a total surprise for me! the lyrics also have some meaning to them so it's not JUST a fun and wacky song, I LOVE IT!

Edgar Allan Poe lived most of his life on the brink of poverty, despite being a brilliant, talented writer. Likewise, The modern musician can be brilliant and talented, and make very little money. Such clever lyrics, and so well performed. It is also kind of a parody but wrapped up in very a very relevant message. In my top 3. I've also added it to my playlist so they can earn 0.0003c per time I listen to it - think about that when you listen to it guys.

I just saw a video of them singing the chorus live and they sounded great even though they were cracking up lol I love that they seem to be having a blast, it's truly contagious.

I was expecting this to be a bit of a shitshow that televoters could latch onto but honestly, I have to say, I actually genuinely like this song, I was pleasantly surprised. One thing I really respect about this song is that whilst its going for somewhat of a comedic effect, the song is still quality in and of itself which is great to see. I doubt there's anyway televoters will forget this song. Even in the field of what we have now, nothing sounds like this.
Also in terms of lyrical content and meaning, its pretty poweful, I think I saw people say the 0.003 part was relating to how much an artist makes from a stream and even in the beginning when Teya (i think, with the red in her hair) hands Selena the paper which the man thinks is brilliant, wasnt written by her but by the typewriter which she refers to as the Poet, Edgar Allen Poe (ghost writing).
I have a lot of respect for songs that are unique and out there arent relying on shock factor or being outlandish for the sake of it and furthermore when the song itself is quality. Props to Austria, I doubted the snippet but you came through.
Yeah I love that it’s an amazing fun song to experience, but then it also has all those real layers beneath it.

I, like you, totally shit bricks when I heard it. I genuinely didn't think I'd like it, but those frantic guitars, the sass, the electronic elements, the random gospel section, the viral dance is so fantastically catchy!
I didnt expect this to come from Austria.
I feel that it's going to set the cat amongst the pigeons because Kaarija finally has an energetic & fun challenger!
To a casual Eurovision watcher (who will be watching and hearing the songs for the first time at the live televised final) are going to be completely drawn in by this (if they get the staging correct). It has that immediacy and the right amount of chaotic energy to make the casual watcher sit up and smile.
On a side note, it literally reminds me so much of Little Big, in the way that they just blew people away with something unique, catchy, fun, cheesy and viral, and this is in the same vain. Currently my 2nd place behind Kaarija, but has the potential to move up the more I listen to it.

Also love that this is a female duet song released on international women’s day. Female duets is one of the most difficult combinations to have success with at Eurovision, so this doing well would be amazing.
So true about me not being able to hide my emotions. I am terrible at acting, and sometimes when I film a reaction and there’s a recording error and I have to re-record it , I’m totally unable to reproduce what I had the first time 😂
@@user-gs3yf7dv8r no, the Croatian song isn't listener friendly, particularly for the first time viewer of the competition. Is it amusing to look at? YES! But its also chaotic and confusing and all over the place.
The thing with the Austrian song is that it will go viral because of the right reasons. Its a song with one hell of a catchy melody, a dance that is tiktok viral worthy, and there's so much frantic energy. I dont feel the Croatian song has that. Also the Croatian song isn't as universally liked.
Plus the Austrian song isn't politically motivated.

One of the songwriters is Rony Janecek, member of the Czech band John Wolfhooker and the song was written during the song camp in Prague (Introvert Party Club from Rodan was also written there)

The thing I love most about this song is that it is a little goofy but it also has a legit meaning and commentary behind it. Very clever writing. I have no doubts that this will qualify to the final (unless the live performance is bad but I feel like Austria are genuinely trying to improve from last year so I think it will be good).

FInland threw down the gauntlet, and Austria picked up in the battle for most batshit crazy entry; Let 3 sitting on the side saying "shit they cant dance to OUR batshit crazy". 🤣
Fun and entertaining, the quirkiness and great melody is fantastic but love the cleverness of it. A great package - on the surface striking and you want to listen and watch but start to listen properly and an important message being conveyed in an innovative, memorable way.
This gives me similar vibes to one of your favourites last year Subwoolfer, like you said it’s well thought through song/concept despite being wacky.
In the video they look like characters from Mad men.
Teya is Serbian-Austrian and she actually tried to represent Austria in 2020 and wasn't selected, then she translated the song to Serbian and applied to Beovizija so we already have an insight into her live and she's actually amazing, so I expect at least her vocals to be hella on point, and I doubt she'd hang around someone who can't hold her own and Austria after the disaster from last year so Salena should be on point as well, PLUS the song is a banger, really quirky but not in a cringey way so high hopes for Austria and we actually have the same top 3 lol. Until Loreen wins melfest 💀
i dont see what could go wrong. they can both sing, theyve got tonnes of funny ideas for the staging and the dance is easy. this is an easy conversion imo

Yea I got sf1 tickets but I don’t know how long I’ll be going for yet. It depends on what kind of accreditation that I get this year, if any 🤷🏻♂️. Will make a decision once I have more info
@@ESCTom I went for SF1 too ( for me, that's pretty much the final this year all in one) - got a seat number and all, the then the site timed out on me. Never mind, I'll get a real buzz just watching shows at Eurovillage.
The song has imagination and character, definitely should stand out. My worry with internal selections is always how it will sound live, and I always prefer when it sounds better live than on tape (examples from this year: Loreen, Marco, Blanca Paloma, Wild Youth).

I love how smart the song is after William explained what the underlying context about the critique of the music industry is. I'm guessing that the video is set in a publishing house in order to keep up the Poe theme. I'm also going to guess that the lyric "Give me two years, and your dinner will be free. Gas station champagne is on me" is about A&R promises and length of contracts that are pushed on new artists. So them getting arrested in the video is the artist losing their freedom.

Teya was actually part of the Serbian national selection under the moniker of Thea Devy, I think, a couple years back before covid. But her song was an environmental ballade If I'm remembering correctly. I think she's of Serbian descent.

My initial reaction was what tf?? I'm a bit too serious (read: boring) for this kind of entry, but it must be said... It's a damn good song! And yes this will stand out soooo much in semi 2 which up till now looked pretty dull. Staging could be truly awful but they look like they know what they're doing. Wow, Austria!
Well that’s the double punch. If you heard the audio on its own, you’d be forgiven for thinking the visuals would be a disaster. But the music video is an absolute win. It’s beautifully shot and packed with great funny ideas

This very quickly and randomly became my favorite of the year out of nowhere. Personally I don’t enjoy the music video that much though, idk if that’s a hot take or not
The scene where they get arrested for being either criminally good or criminally bad perfectly describes how people will react to this. I adore them, and I don't want to live in a world where they don't qualify. Germany, Switzerland, and Serbia are all in the first semi so, unfortunately, no "friend" votes for them, but I like to think that they won't need them. Well done, Austria 👏🎉
