i'm russian/latvian/swedish and i'm not immersed in Spanish culture, however, i have basic knowledge and associations with what it is. and for me, it sounds so extremely Spanish, which got me so so excited to get something authentically Spanish instead of Latino-inspired like a last year (even tho that was also fab). babes, not sure what you really think Spaniards have to sound like and what their culture really is.

As a Spaniard, I tell you that this is the most Spanish that has been sent in many years. It is a faithful representation of our culture.
I understand that the song is complicated, flamenco is a type of music that you may not like. But this is VERY Spanish.
I have to laugh that you guys were confused as to if this sounds Spanish. It is extremely traditional for Spain. If you have ever seen a flamenco performance, this sort of style of music is what you tend to hear.
Do not worry, here we are to help you out! If you are used to a more "latin" sound coming from Spain... I get why you would be confused. This song is a lullaby, here in Spain, when babies cannot sleep, it is normal to use the words "eaea" to calm them down - that is where the title of the song comes from! Also, the song is pure flamenco, and one of the main characteristics of the genre is its Arab influence, that is also why you were kind of puzzled at the beginning. Flamenco is also sung this way so... yeah. This entry is as national (particularly Andalusian) as Tortilla de Patata :) Hope I helped!

The song is about a baby crying in his grandmother's arms and not falling asleep and she sings him a lullaby to put him to sleep. EaEa is a way to calm the baby to sleep. She asks that when she dies they bury her on the moon and from there she can see her child every night. The lyrics are reminiscent of the poetry of the Granada poet Federico García Lorca.🕊️
You see guys, this is flamenco with an electronic base. The "praying" style of voice is very Spanish. The rhythm you're talking about is Puertorican, yes it's very popular in Spain too but it isn't ethnic like this one. It's purpose is not to make you dance, but to listen to it and flow with the magic of the music and listen to the amazing voice of the singer. Not all songs are made to dance.
It's not a song for everyone. It's a true flamenco passionate song full of deep feelings and meaning sung from the heart, as flamenco is meant to be

This is authentic 100% traditional Spanish music/sound. It's actual Spanish, as we spaniards know, and not "fake Spanish", as people outside Spain think "Spanish music has to sound". For example, Aritz Aren's Flamenco was more like that "fake Spanish sound", while Blanca Paloma's Eaea is genuine Spanish music (even though it has a modern sound).
Funnily enough Aritz's Flamenco sounded more like a tango.
@@diegopozas1694 Yeah, actually they said the dance in that song was "acrotango". It was suposed to sound Spanish but obviously it wasn't (this was expected since that's the only song in thid year's Benidorm Fest made almost entirely by non-Spanish people).

I really believe that the reason for the existence of this song is not only because from an artistic point of view it is incredible, but also because it will help to show people not so close to the Spanish culture the rhythms of Spain without the LATAM influence. Just for the fact of "educating" the audience musically, I think it's a win.
This is actually more Spanish than ever. The way she sings quite southern Spain (Arab influences), the gestures that reminds of flamenco, the clapping. The only thing different is the electronic track at the back. If she was singing a capella it would be even more traditional. We can feel the mourning of the lyrics, the beautiful voice. People confuse Latin American rhythms with Spanish vibes, so people have the wrong perception of what it sounds like. The best song so far. I will go to the finals just to listen to this. I connect with this song in a particular way.
I'm not spanish, but I listen and make ambient, electronic, and experimental music, so I usually listen to this type of song.
I think that if you are not used to listening to this type of music, you'll find it hard to get in tune with it.
It's a strange, super cultural, experimental, and captivating song, and I'm really happy for Spain.
It's a risk for the competition but it doesn't matter... this will be a moment for sure.

It can hardly get more Spanish than this, as a Spaniard I'm glad we are showing that SloMo (which was great) music genre is not the only thing in Spain.
This is flamenco with a modern / electronic touch. Flamenco is very popular especially in the south of the country, and quite popular abroad for many too (many tourists go to Andalusia to enjoy flamenco shows).
The song may not be for everyone, but most of us in Spain are extremely proud, and it was a good surprise to see so many positive reactions from abroad too.

If you think Spain sounds like : pum pupumpum pum and not like this eaea, you don’t have idea what Spain is 😂 the sound you mean it comes from Latinamerica and not from Spain… Spain this year send quality, culture, art and an amazing voice 1000 times better than every pop, dance, or electro songs without soul.

Unfortunately that's what much of Britain think. I'm a Spaniard living in the UK and I have to constantly clarify that Spain is not just beach, sun and Latino music but there are mountains, snow, Celtic culture, etc.
It's just the way Spain's marketed in several countries, showing just a small side of the country.
Latin music is from South America, Spain has Flamenco.
The common factor is the language, not the rhythms.
Last year’s candidate did a light copy/mix of Rosalia with a bullfighter’s suit.
This is a risky, haunting, quality art piece with great vocals. It’s traditional and modern; it’s cool, it’s different to the usual comercial dire presented at Eurovision and obviously doesn’t fit into the scheme.
It evokes one of Lorca’s (the great poet) nursery songs, a “nana”, although I believe this one was her grandmother’s.
It has the telluric influence of his poems and plays that all work around the moon, love, blood, death so inherent to the south of Spain, Andalucía. It’s repetitive and hasn’t got a wide range of music because that’s how nursery songs usually are, easy for children, so not needed. As you don’t need to know all this to appreciate something of real quality.
Even if she were to come last, I will still feel very proud of this daring and very beautiful representation, and she’s bound to be amongst the first ten. If she isn’t, it will be because quality isn’t meant for Eurovision.
Believe me, it grows on you. You should listen to it again.

Y quizá el problema viene en que nos quedemos con que ese sonido es el único español y se le ponga como tradicional de todo el país cuando no tiene nada que ver. Es tan fácil como ver que las jotas (por poner un ejemplo) en realidad abarcan mucho mayor territorio aunque tengan diferencias entre sí, o que en Galicia, Asturias y Cantabria uno de los instrumentos más usados en su música sea la gaita y no la guitarra. La del año pasado no sonaba a Latinoamérica. Y eso quedándonos con la parte simple de lo que esto significa. Latinoamérica tiene tantos tipos de sonidos como países y dentro de cada país, sonidos diferentes por regiones tal como aquí.
SloMo sonaba a una canción pop con ritmos actuales que se escuchan mayoritariamente en España. Sean de origen español o no. Que guste o no, cuestión de cada uno.
Y vaya por delante que mando todo mi apoyo a Blanca Paloma y ojalá tenga suerte, pero ya me aburre leer que esta canción es más española porque suene a flamenco.
Spain's performance is pure art turned into music. Totally different from what was offered last year, but it contains vocal perfection, personality and an authentic flavor of Spain. No one else could bring something like that to Eurovision.🥰

Reggaeton originates from Panama, and Puerto Rico quickly picked up and ran with the genre. Slomo's writers were all based in Los Angeles, which is where it was probably written, a few miles from my job. It's more American than Spanish.
Eaea is an extremely Spanish entry. I find it captivating and personally love it. My favorite entry this year.

Excusing the ignorance of the reviewers apparent lack of knowledge of flamenco and Spanish music, I think it’s wonderful to have such musical diversity in the contest as opposed to the apparent need of reviewers to have a continual line of forgettable ‘bops’ belted out by divas…
I completely disagree about the lack of connection. I'm an American with zero Spanish/ European roots but the performance made me emotional. Like it was said in the video, it's haunting.
That zenith angle where you can see the white circle symbolizing the moon that is transformed into an eye, the eye that watches the child from the moon. This moment is perfectly accompanied by the lyrics of the song, it is what he is singing. It is magical, elegant, artistic, modern and impressive.
Me, as spaniard, I know this is a hard song to listen for the first time, but the staging impact is amazing. She elevates the song live

I have a huge respect for Spain this year, they had a lot of typical pop songs in their national selection, which would be such a "safe" option, but they rather went for more risky choice, which screams for me both traditional and ethnic but also experimental vibes. It's so avant-garde, yet true to their cultural roots. Obviously, any typical pop song is more likely to be accessible for the most of the fans, but that's why I appreciate their decision so much, let the whole Europe see the other side of Spanish culture, not only those dancy songs.
Btw. when I've heard it for the very first time, I had exactly the same thing in my mind as Goy did - that I would rather expect this type of singing method in more Eastern European regions (typically for Slavic countries). 😄
And get ready, tomorrow is the day when the final results of the Czech national selection will be revealed! 😁😎

Yeah, almost as we expected this reaction to be😁 Actually, this entry winning a national selection is a great reminder that Eurovision is still not a radio contest, even despite it is surrounded now by eurofans that, it seems like, have only one criteria for a song - do they wanna listen to it again, is it listenable on Spotify, do they wanna add it to their playlists and will they wanna skip it when it comes... Maybe, one day when, firstly, autotune will be allowed in ESC (not only in Norwegian selection) and maybe then it won't be necessary to actually perform on stage, and ESC really will turn into a radio contest... then yes, this argument will be 100% valid and main. But thankfully, now the full package is what matters which might contain many things, including live vocals, having a unique song, first immediate reaction of viewers, representing culture of your country, maybe an unknown part of it. And it's right that not everyone will understand and vote for it but still, it's great to have something like this in the running.

Every time I watch this performance I’m just mesmerised, this is pure art and my current winner
I liked that Spain is sending this jewel different unique hypnotic and not a silly cheesy song. Flamenco in Spain is an art an not all the singers can sing it and it's been for centuries. Spain has sent before song with flamenco flavor. But european audience don't appreciate this even this music is european not from other planet. When other countries send song with cultural or ethnic sounds Europe is delighted but when Spain send flamenco everybody is with a big face. Spain, Portugal and Albania are the most underrated countries in the contest. I would like to see singers from other countries singing this kind of genre with the soul.
Guys, this isn't a commercial pop song and, definitely, not the type of song anyone would add to their playlist, but the whole package is a piece of art. Minimal electronic base, powerful flamenco and ethnic vocals, staging, lighting, camera angles, back vocals, claps, the right amount of choreography. This is more hypnotic than Chanel's booty. I'm sure it will do very well at ESC. And, by the way, this is way more Spanish than Chanel's entry (which I loved and still watch from time to time).

And…guys ethnic / traditional/ music mixed with something more modern is always present in ESC; northern countries usually plays this formula
An entertaining video as always! Before this performance, no one was really talking about this song as a potential winner at all, and immediately afterwards it created SO much buzz for this entry, Very similar to how Chanel won last year. As a song, it's not for everyone, but it is a song made for a visual experience and Blanca Paloma delivered that in spades with this performance. I truly do hope that translates well at Eurovision because I do think there is something special about this entry.

Blanca Paloma's song is a play, a performance made to be represented and with the staging it makes sense, using Spanish (Lorca) but also universal symbolic references. It is an invocation, a call, a song to what makes us feel safe and strong at the same time, which makes us enter a hypnotic trance.
She relates it to her grandmother, to that maternal thing that takes care of us and protects us. The red strings that hang down and that she already explained reminded her of her grandmother's shawl, form a circle that is like a maternal womb that gives us light and nourishes us. She goes through that uterus that is fertilized (this is how I understand those hands that surround her and hold her for a few seconds). Then the miracle of life is done.
The moon is the symbol of the feminine, which engenders, nourishes and makes it grow. It is present every night except when it goes out on a new moon. During the performance, the sound “ea, ea” is repeated loudly and rhythmically, which is the lullaby that mothers sing to children when they are afraid, when they cry, to reassure them and give them strength. Nothing bad is going to happen... The dancers also imitate the movement of the arms that they cradle spasmodically. It looks like a sway of waves... Because the sea also lulls and transforms with the phases of the moon and is the quintessential feminine element. The base that sounds below the telluric song and the allusions to the heartbeat complete the visual and sound elements of the set.
This song is a song to celebrate life and a work of art. Win or not, it will not leave anyone indifferent and it will be difficult to forget.

Our song of this year is different, when i saw that this is our song i like very hoocked, because i like abother song that name is nochentera by vicco you should listen because you may love it.

We carry part of our culture with the aim of sharing and celebrating our folklore. All countries and we have roots. It is about leaving your mind and listening, letting yourself be carried away by the mantra of the song and transporting yourself to the ancestral. It's not a dance song, it's a travel song. I respect your opinion but a lot of spanish people are gonna be mad when they hear you saying this doesnt sound spanish. This is probably “the most spanish sound” we have sent to Eurovision. This is how really flamenco sounds mixed with an experimental beat. This is the kind of music Rosalia does. She is singing a type of flamenco, so of course is from Spain and what you would expect from Spain! She is not singing a eastern style song, she is singing flamenco, typical from Spain.
Not to make comparisons because they’re very different, but this is on a similar realm of songs like Jamala’s or Salvador Sobral’s. They won Eurovision, and I don’t think that many people would listen to them on repeat, or dance to them, or sing along, just because they’re not that type of songs. I’m not implying she’s going to win, mind you, but just saying that it shouldn’t be immediately dismissed for being “out there” and not radio friendly.
I don’t know what’s gonna be of this song cos it’s only February and it’s too early to call considering only 6 other songs have been picked. But even acknowledging that it’s risky, I think it’s a lot more interesting as a follow up to Chanel, doing a 180 rather than send a random formulaic pop song. (We see you, Cyprus)
Other people have pointed out about the meaning of the lyrics and about the cultural significance of Flamenco, and I understand that it might be a bit alien to anyone who’s not from Spain, but that’s what Eurovision is about. If we get 35 pop songs, 20 bops that sound the same and 15 ballads that sound the same, what’s the point.

Like many other flamenco singers, Blanca doesn't have vocal singing education. It comes naturally. Flamenco is a world heritage human wealth by UNESCO. And Spanish are proud of their culture

It has very southern Spanish sound actually. I like the song and due to the vocal it might be appreaciate by the judges; with the public, who knows.

it's captivating and emotional, she has the whole package: the vocals, the emotion, the looks,the staging, the charisma and most important the roots and traditions. It represents SPAIN. That's how it should be, Spanish should be proud of their selection no matter the rank paloma gets because even if Europe don't understand a word she is saying, it will catch their attention for sure.
Guys, Let's not reduce the discussion to the song, let's talk about the performance and all the elements involved. There were at least 10 more radio-friendly songs in the Benidorm Fest, but this performance stood out, it is going to be a breath of fresh air in the ESC because nothing will be like this, her voice, the different moments, it is a journey, its mysterious, its sad, its powerful. It's NOT a song to be heard regularly, at least not for an average person. It's all about creating a mesmerizing experience. Save this comment, this will be top 5.

This is the most Spanish we have sent in years, the problem is that the vision you have of Spain is not the true one, you expect Latin sounds and Spain is not that.

Particularmente, El tema de Blanca me parece auténtico. Honestamente, me da igual lo que piensen en el resto de Europa. En un mundo tan globalizado, las apuestas más etnicas, me parecen las más auténticas y sinceras. Prefiero este tipo de propuestas que otras menos singulares y más globalizadas.
Blanca lleva un poema cantado, una nana cantada, flamenco electrónico. Sus visuales son preciosos y su voz, prodigiosa.
Me agrada que España lleve una propuesta tan singular.

so I'm not AS into it as many others are (it might grow on me). However, I'm very happy that Spain is sending in 2 strong songs in a row and I can see why this won.
There's a lot of references to the poetry of Lorca, one of the most incredible poets of Spain, killed (maybe cause he was gay, who knows) who wrote about forbidden love, live, mothers, lovers, in the 30's and using simbolsm when he talked about same sex love. All his poetry are in all the XX century flamenco and even in this new flamenco that use electronic. Rosalia's second record, El mal querer, has sames vibes.
I can understand why you don't like, but flamenco is so powerful. Fills with bones, blood, love, sex, motherhood and earth. This song have all.

Its a lullaby song. EaEa is the onomatopoeic sound that mothers make to reassure and cradle their baby......sorry you didnt like it, but it is very emotional for us
Chanel was latin american rithms (not spanish), this song IS spanish. I understand you are confused in terms of rithms origins and mixin latinoamerican with spanish (the european country). This song is from the bottom of the culture from Spain as a country, and is so deep, poetic and melancolic that it´s difficult to digest for people out of Spain. But this song is an ancestral masterpiece mixed with modern electronica. Remember Eimear Quinn from Ireland (1996) or Jamala from Ukraine (2016)
I don't have any issues with you not liking the entry. It's a polarizing song, of course. Which is a good thing in Eurovision: no one votes for their 10th favorite. My problem with your reaction is:
1) Cultural ignorance. I'm portuguese, so this is very familiar to me. But even if it wasn't, I'd try do educate myself before stating that it doesn't sound Spanish or whatever country we're referring to. It's OK to not know. It comes across wrong when you nearly mock it.
2) Your lack of tolerance whenever you hear something that doesn't allow you to dance or sing along to. "What are the viewers supposed to do?" Errr... Maybe nothing? Maybe just watch and listen?

This sound is much more traditional Spanish than Latin reggaeton. That music comes from Central America. It depends on the eyes of who's watching and listening to. Eurofans use to require more ethnic because big part of the Eurovision essence is the traditional rhythms. Toy said this does not sound very Spanish, but this is pure Spanish vibe, flamenco, passion, tradition, culture... I know this is not commercial nor radio-friendly. This is a risky proposal but I wish people can connect with the feeling of the song at the end of the day.
I am thankful that every year Eurovision receives more rock, indie, alternative, electronic, experimental, folkore proposals. and that less and less fan divas and power ballads are seen, which seems to be the only thing that old eurofans like.
For me this is spectacular, a 3-minute piece of art, that will not be compared to anything this year, Spain is a winner alert
It's probably de most spanish song we've ever submitted. Reggaeton and latino rhythms are not from Spain at all, this is flamenco, one of our most precious cultural and artistic types of traditional music 🙌❣️

I was surprised to hear you say it doesn't "sound Spanish". For many, this is categorically, unmistakably Spanish, with its evident copla/flamenco influences. It's my personal favourite for now, but I understand how it might be polarising. I'm just hoping it isn't misunderstood in May.

The song itself (music, singing, clapping) is a bulería, kind of a specific 'subgenere' of flamenco with a modern twist of an electronic beat.
The topic and the lyrics come from the POV of a woman singing a lullaby, trying to put her crying baby to sleep ('Eaea' is a cooing sound in Spain)
The performance and staging are the ones of a ritual, summoning her ancestors. Specially her late grandma, wich this song is inspired by and dedicated to, because she taught and used to sing flamenco and lullabies to her.
The repetitive pattern of the beat, backing vocals and rythmic clapping are intended to be entrancing and hypnotizing for connecting with the energy of the experience. Her hand movements work as a praise and a calling to the above.
The red threads are a reference to the fringes of a traditional 'mantón' (shawl) simbolizing protection, motherhood, in fact she said it could be seen sort of womb-shaped. Actually she worked as a costume and stage set designer, as she did here too.
The white circle represents the moon, where, as the lyrics say, she wants to be buried in when she dies, so she will be able to watch over her child everynight but one ('newmoon')
First she kneels looking up, later she kneels again looking downwards, always with a reaching hand.
Then she shoots a flaming arrow and lits it on fire (red pulsing light, heartbeat, blood, death) Finally the priestess gets on the shrine to end the ritual in ecstasy.

For me, this song is much better than Slomo. Slomo was a regular pop latin song that you hear all the time, but this is really Spain.

It is interesting how esc fans get excited about ethno music when it comes from Ireland or eastern Europe but when Spain does it Europe don't like it. Everyone praised Ukraine when they sent ethno music.
SloMo was a thing. This is something deeper and you need to watch it without stopping to connect… You guys stopped the show a lot of times and that’s how you loose the points. She remains me to Kamala (2016) wich is one of the best winners performance from last decade in Eurovision. She’s not gonna be on the bottom at all, Spain’s proposal is more than strong.

We took a risk and after marvellous Chanel (it will take a long time to see such a wonderfull and perfect show again) we send another wonderfull song an amazing singer in a different way. And that´s a potential winner in my opinion. If it´s not as least we might be proud of this gorgeous entry. Art in every way!
Guys, don't feel sorry for your ignorance. The beat you are "missing" is not a Spanish beat but a latin reggaeton beat. This song is a bulería, which is one of the main branches of Flamenco. It doesn't get any more Spanish than a flamenco song.
"EaEa" is an onomatopoeia. It's what you tell babies when you are holding them, swinging them side to side slowly to help them fall asleep. This song is a bulería lullaby.
If your musical ignorance does not let you appreciate flamenco, it's perfectly fine, don't feel bad about it! There will be loads of other songs more up to your level and standards. Maybe try Norway's song or check Melodifestivalen instead :)

Flamenco is fully influenced by arabs. They were here in the peninsula for almost 700 years. Is deep flamenco (buleria) mixex with electronic sounds. Also the song makes referencies to Federico García Lorca, a gay famous poetry killed by the Franco Regime
Here is the thing. Why do we have to show Europe what they want to see from us instead of what we are? Why does Europe enjoy balcanic, italian, slavic, nordic, french sounds, but not spanish ones? Do I have to be french to understand Barbara Pravi? Do I have to be italian to understand Il Volo? Do I have to be ukrainian to understand Jamala or Kalush Orchestra? do I have to be portuguese to understand Salvador Sobral? I mean, it’s not that you HAVE TO like it just because its cultural, it’s totally alright to not like it, please don’t get me wrong, but I would like Europe to appreciate and enjoy this part of us and not just party and beaches. I am not a fan of flamenco and I don’t feel connected to this.
