    The Instagram algorithm is extremely unpredictable, I’ve had my art account for about 6 years and it was slow growing for a bit, about 100 followers a year, but in the last year I’ve spiked to 50,000 followers and I didn’t necessarily change anything in my art when that spike happened, I still don’t know how it happened or how to keep it up, I see people with better art than me get less reach, and i just don’t think insta is very fair at times

      Yuppp! I am a seasoned artist with ink, drawing, and have known that I was artist from small toddler age💗 I went on that journey, and gradually found all my favorite styles and put them together with years and years of practicing and taking something small here and there from other artists, like a curve,a light in an eyeball,my lettering(graffiti) id look at books and online at other artists work for inspiration and now 3 decades later I definitely have a certain style,my own style that if anyone tried copying me everyone who knows my work would know, and it is an amazing feeling knowing that I found my signature style. But!! The journey does not stop here!!! Oh no my dear,, I am always learning new techniques and now I’m painting,I am skilled with ink, all inks! So learning more about paint, paint pouring, cells, so much fun!!! It’s another journey that I’m excited to travel.

    I have personally commented on posts by loish and pascal so many times and have had real conversations with them, (while I am a nobody on insta). I think staying humble is the biggest factor in having dedicated followers, Loish also shares her favourite brushes for free which was super helpful when I was just starting out. Also, I agree with your advice for beginner artists, if you post don’t worry about the likes/comments, if you can’t then don’t post until you start feeling more confident about your work.

    • @th3acescorpio
      @th3acescorpio 4 роки тому +22

      Being humble will definitely get you a lot further than doing the opposite. A lot of artist get really stingy with sharing their brushes, "because they don't want people swagger jacking their style!" But it's real simple to find out the types of brushes artist use, and plus, being stingy with brushes just makes a person look kind of like a pretentious ass.

      I went through not focusing on my art style at all and went hiatus for 3 years to find the art style I really want, but at the cost of losing my engagements. Sometimes a few looks on reels or pinterest would make you rilled up but it went away right after picking up the pen. Just take things one thing at a time, no pressure to post. Just enjoy the process to draw. By the time you mastered that and found your art style, you can start focusing on your audience, which is what I’m having trouble with now honestly 😅. But let’s keep on trying.

      if its out of the ordinary then you/your art will be respected and followed on a much higher level, just not in the usual and shallow way. if it has the power to make you uncomfortable or sad then that means its effective, and thats probably the most important thing.

Once I made my art acc and even gave a shout-out from my casual acc , it seems people are not really interested in your talent. My art acc even after begging to be followed has only 190 followers something. People see my artwork from my casual acc on story but they don't make an effort to go like or follow. And now I stopped begging others to check my art. And hence I only follow artists and some genuine people who actually look at my art. Personally from my experience, I think that any beginner or intermediate artists that are just jumping into or slowly working up their skills in their craft and want to display their art should start locally and look into any nearby art groups/communities and get their art in small galleries or cafes, or to focus making artwork that a small group of friends/family can see (depending on the beginner/intermediate artists' social circle and environment), and then make it a slow process with putting up their art on social media (with the exception of a small audience/group of friends on somewhere like a Discord thread).
    Even if they're introverted/loners, all that's needed is just for them to focus on their art in their own time and not to rush into posting any art online so that they can focus on finding their own niche and making it for themselves without the pressure of what any algorithms/followers would want.

    Just want to add to this that having thousands of followers doesn't mean someone is 'successful', it just means they have thousands of followers. It doesn't automatically equate to lots of sales etc. You can have 300 followers and be making a living from your art, it's the quality of the followers that's important. That and of course making art that you're passionate about, not just making art that you think will be popular as stated here! If you like painting beautiful girls though, don't let anyone stop you!

    I’m glad people are able to create different types of art, it goes against creativity to constantly be blinkered with ‘must post same thing or lose followers’ to satisfy a website. I know of artists who started in fandom and now work eg as background artists and still they lose followers with every post, so maybe followers aren’t the holy grail anyway. Connection and engagement with your audience is one of the most important things on Instagram, UA-cam or anywhere, you’re building an audience so talk and listen to them.

    Okay, I can't give advice on 'having loads of followers', but as a creator, I appreciate anyone who says 'be yourself', if you don't like to draw these moody girls (nothing against who likes it) don't do it. DO you.' I think that sometimes people get intimidated by the whole 'these many people liked your picture', it can be mentally translated to 'all the rest of the planet thinks you're s#$%.' And when you create things that matter to you, that are a part of who you are, rejection can be very painful.

    Things I noticed with popular artists is that you need to be one of those : juste very good at it no matter your style, bad but super funny, kinda good and revelant or super weird but very consistent with your style.
    And it's all good.

    From what I’ve seen the artists that get popular are mostly digital art.

    • @jazz9260
      @jazz9260 4 роки тому +84

      That’s pretty true, but I don’t think digital art and popularity directly correlate with one another. Even though most of the big artists I follow now work mainly digitally, I still find the traditional drawings (that they make every so often) appealing. Digital is just the “wave of the future” I guess, and does make drawing a little easier.

      It also comes to the fact its easyer to have a clean digital illustration up, traditional ones require a flattering photo or a scan with color corection depending on a scaner. So sadly most traditional art doesnt look as good on insta even if its breath taking irl.

I hate to see those big accounts that never even like the sincere comment you leave them., as to why I always respond to all my comments.

    You know, this video came at a good time. I kept seeing tips on how to be successful on social media and a lot of them were all about consistency - some even going as far as saying you should make sure your drawings have similar color pallettes so they look good on instagram.
    Mind you, I'm not talking about tips on how to follow a singular project - if you are making a comic or stuff, yeah, its better if your style and color palette are consistent and follow a pattern. I'm talking about growing on instagram and twitter and all this junk. The simple of idea of following this tip made me miserable and consider giving up on art all together.
    Seeing how these big artists I really admire laid out like this, and how this doesn't apply to them made me feel motivated and hopeful again. So, thank you for this video (´°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥ω°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥`)

      This tip in particular bothers me to no end. I understand the idea of a gallery that looks consistent and good as a whole, but that doesn’t mean that the colours have to follow a certain palette or that the style or topic has to be the same for every post. I’d much rather follow somebody who’s experimenting and has some different things in his feed than an artist that never changes. That’s just my preference, but it shows that such tips shouldn’t keep you from doing your own thing.

    • @emdove
      @emdove 4 роки тому +4

      Plus, you shouldn’t be drawing specifically for your Instagram account (again, just my opinion). I found myself thinking about how the thing I was drawing at the time would look on my insta some time ago, and immediately noticed that my motivation was dwindling while I tried to make it fit the rest of my gallery. So I really dislike this tip aswell and completely agree.

    I’m still super happy I’ve found your channel. You’re so calming, but straight to the point and great tips. Drawing has been something I’ve done since I was a young child and the last couple of years I thought I couldn’t draw anymore. I had pretty much given up drawing in general. After watching your videos, along with others, I realized I was still trying to draw the cutesy anime girls and that just wasn’t my style anymore. I had shifted to really trippy/indie inspired art and once I realized that I used your tip and compiled a Pinterest board of different artists and art styles that I loved and I’ve been able to figure out my style. Now I’m just working on improving. Most importantly I’m having fun again and no longer looking at the canvas for hours in frustration because I can’t bring myself to draw another anime girl lol. All this to say, have fun and be patient with yourself. Put yourself into your art, and don’t be afraid of your things not getting attention or selling because you’re not doing what you feel like you should be. Much love, and I wish you all successful art journeys 🙏🏽💕

    like, for real, i can't imagine taking this little hobby of mine THAT seriously

    This is very informational Ergo! Love where you're going with your youtube, creativity and how you are spreading your love to other artists to continue with their passions. Thank you! You are a wonderful soul! Keep up the FAB work! 😍

    Josh: Hey-
    Me: Hello, voice!
    This is my first video of yours I'm seeing and I immediately wanted to keep watching because you sound so calming and trustworthy! I'm only a little bit into the video now but you have some good stuff to say too! I think I'll stick around :)

    This video is mostly just him telling us we should believe in ourselves and be proud of who we are ❤️🤧(but in a very helpful and constructive way)

    Hey Josh, I hope you will see this! I just was hoping you would put out a video on how to choose your art name/how to brand yourself? As in, using your real name vs choosing an online handle, how to choose a good and memorable name, etc! I don't think you have a video like this yet (I could be wrong) and it would be really interesting to get your perspective and advice on it. : )

    This video is so motivating, I was feeling really blue due to comparing myself to other artists, but after a single phrase ‘bout getting back to work I got my whole energy back. Thank you!

    This is one of the most valuable videos I have seen. It's about more than just Instagram. It's about an artistic presence anywhere on the Internet.

    I've had a tough time getting followers on IG, but I figure: keep putting out solid work and people will enjoy it.

    My Mans pascal campion has been one of my favorite artists out there that just always delivers great work. Thanks for this video though. I think it's a good take on how an art page can become successful.

    Finally someone who is respectful about artists work... a true artist is always experimenting new things! There are other artists commenting other accounts that just make it look bad... if you follow an artist don’t follow just because the aesthetic of the profile, follow because you support his/hers journey 💜
