I guess consistency also depends if the artist found their style and their topic of interest. Some of the people you looked at, they still have a lot of learning ahead of them before they can settle down to a consistent IG feed (at least that’s how I think). My IG account is certainly a big mess atm, since I don’t have a style yet...hopefully one day I can start to serve a common theme, regularly. Nonetheless, your comments were very helpful! Thank you for teaching us!
Same, I am also still trying to find my style. But maybe that's a tip (idk i got 208 followers lol) but I try to archieve stuff if I feel that it does not fit my feed. So it's not that messy anymore even tho i had to archive alot of stuff I'm really proud of haha

Please do more videos critiquing us. A lot of this was consistency and just the quality of the artwork. Could you talk about posting different media? I want to keep a consistent page, but I’m also proud of artwork that doesn’t fit my typical posting but is still good (imo)
don't forget about stories! It's a great way to test out new types of content and gauge how interested your audience is. You can even add a poll in the story.

I get you but that sounda like you’re aspiring for your instagram account to be a blog rather than aspiring for it to _grow_ . Most people looking to really grow their numbers specifically are trying to turn social media into an avenue for professional work whether that’s leading people towards large projects like zines, towards buying prints, towards commissions, attracting sponsorships or what have you. In the end I think Josh recognized how this ended up happening. A lot of these people aren’t ready to grow their social media to a point of it assisting them in building revenue with their art. Most of these examples should really only be worried about documenting themselves on the journey, not necessarily looking to grow their following just yet
It often feels like the Instagram model undermines what it means to be an artist and express yourself through experimentation in style and subject matter. That said, I've met so many cool people on the platform and have enjoyed all of the engagement. I just wish I didn't feel like I have to sacrifice my love for variety to gain a following.
Its easy to think that but it isnt true. Different subject matter will grow faster sure, but Im sure if you look around the 100-200k follower range you will see the variety there. You don’t have to sacrifice anything - get rid of that mindset.

I often hear people wanting someone to follow others, like following many people on twitter etc etc. Honestly, I don't really have time (nor the brains) to process 100+ people posting content every day. That always surprises me, the fact that an artist really needs to follow lots of people back. Some people get overly emotional about it. I don't care if someone follows many people or not. It's not my business and I don't automatically assume someone is "full of themselves" just by not following anyone. Modern social media is complicated 8"D

I see my account as more of a hobbyist thing right now but there’s no harm in learning from this and trying to work towards something that will benefit me in the future! I get from a super-clinical, business perspective of branding, but I feel like there's also sort of a cost/benefit aspect to that as well. By posting outside of your "lane," you can attract people who wouldn't ordinarily see your work. To give a personal example, I posted a one-off Banjo Kazooie doodle once and got a ton of traction from that, including a feature from Rare itself. But that wasn't on Instagram so idk how different the culture there is. :/

Yes my next vid will clear some of this up but its like I said : this is for people who want to build an audience that supports them. Some of these things are Instagram focused but the reality is you are unlikely to get sizable appeal by trying everything under the sun for the rest of your art career. Theres always something where its subject matter or medium, or style that draws people to an individual creative.

he is wrong about most of his advice, please dont feel shitty about your artaccount, u should never feel shitty after someone who basicly say that u need to follow whatevery one elses is doing, JUST DO U AND STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF, theright followers will come and stick withyou, u dont need to follow this aestetic trend like others do, post whatever makes u content with your art, be it sketches, finished work, unfinished work, unrelated post to art, text posts or even weird things. u just should do u.
I'm guilty of not putting descriptions on my art. I never know what to say, but I'll try harder from now on. I should also update more, but I've become very cautious about doing that bc of how easily I slip into the mind set that my quicker drawings are not a representation of my ability, and become discouraged.

I think you did very good with the critiques! They weren't too harsh and you gave real critiques instead of fluff! Also to anyone saying that they want to keep posting a variety of content in regards to both art content and other stuff as well, I have literally not followed or unfollowed an account bc they have had both art and other content and I only want art on my feed for my art account. So what he's saying is true. ☺
Love how honest you are with everyone, wish more people were that way. Definitely going to take your tips into consideration and start making some changes. I have done mostly digital editing and am in the process of learning to draw digitally hoping to share more of my art instead of just the edits. Thanks for all the tips!

This was really interesting! I'm still too sensitive to direct criticism that I didn't submit my insta for this, but I am still interested in what I can learn from the points you give! What I'm taking away currently is: -Unfollow some accounts I'm nolonger interested in (I have 1,024 following, but I'm following 1,678, so maybe getting down to 900 would be better!) -Post mostly finished and clean work, WIPs are okay but make them look more appealing (in my case with digital work, maybe a direct crop of the piece, but with base colors, instead how I am now with you can see parts of the program and there is small text (usually "thank you for joining the art stream" haha) It's only a couple but I'm sure I'll hear more and spot out more stuff! Thank you for these types of videos! Instagram is really a hard place to get noticed it seems, my main account currently is one I restarted last summer, so seeing me almost hit the milestone I last had on my old account after 2 years, almost hit again in 1 year is nice seeing I've made some improvement
I just don’t get it why is it a problem for you having a bigger following number than followers... of course if you are serious about your art you want the other way around I know cause I wanted too, and if you are really not interested on those accounts anymore make sense, but there are so many amazing artists out there how can you be following only 500 people? I think maybe its good to have majority of the accounts you follow be art accounts! As sometimes I visit an artist page just to see who they follow so I can support other artists too. ^^
In my opinion some points you criticized are weird :/ Like they should just post one type of content over and over again... I would not follow someone who has no variety in their art. That gets boring pretty fast. Also the no caption and the post that make a bigger one together are personal preference.
I completely agree. I find myself feeling at odds with IG because it seems like you NEED to do the same thing over and over again to amass a following. I like to switch things up a lot and I have no doubt it's ruined my growth, but it's just who I am to continually experiment and I don't want to sacrifice that for numbers.
uhmm the way I see this is that you need to have a consistent armonic feed, it's not exactly about the style, we all follow an artist who's capable of drawing cartoon, anime and realism and still get the likes, what I mean is that you need to have an harmonic color palette, a consistent font-type, a consistent logo or watermark, etc. Did I get it right Josh? :D
I completely agree. There’s a popular Instagram artist who draws photo realistic pretty girls with super saturated makeup and initially I thought “wow never seen that before so cool!” But although they were doing everything right (they had a schedule, super consistent posts, showed progress videos) it just got boring and I unfollowed (not that’ll they’ll miss me lmao they’re hella successful). That particular model feels stifling and I’m too much of an unfortunate mess to follow it 😅 it’ll hurt my growth but life is too short

So I watched this, looked at my bio, completely rewrote it, and I totally need to work on my posting consistency. Both on style and schedule. Style wise I think I wanna try to emulate Ladowska for the gallery look.
I think you had a lot of genuinely valid advice and critiques, but I think its a bit hypocritical how you're telling an Instagram account with 2x your insta following how you personally don't believe they would have that following without them having a youtube channel. Also on your Instagram accounts, you post the same "sketch" drawings with little variety or interesting pieces. Just my two cents, not trying to hate.
I never mentioned their channel, Its based off of my knowledge about the engagement of videos and their post types. You don’t need to have the exact same results to have credible information about a topic. But your opinion is valid as well!
Your channel is my new addiction; you're handsome, your voice is fantastic, good quality, a perfect teacher and your art is amazing. The perfect combination. Of course I love this video I feel that I learn a lot of things so important that I need to do.

One thing that occurs to me though and bothers me is that it seems according to you, art is all about getting likes, followers and clicks. How about the simple and pure satisfaction of having created something for yourself, and be proud of it! I don't think pure artist make art to get as much attention as possible, and create with that in mind. It is the expression of their personal journey and vision on life?
I enjoyed this. Instagram is not my natural social media, but enjoyed this break down. I'm on instagram but I'm a photographer, I get a lot out of Ergo Josh. Treating your art as a business is the thing he preaches well, which at times feels at odds to being an artist.

Joke's on you. My Instagram is just for fun. Not for growing. So There! 😜 .... Josh, you seem to be under the impression that all instagram artists are after followers. When that is far from true. Some artists are just experimenting. Some, like myself, are simply sharing because they can. And some, like yourself, are using it as a marketing tool. Although you made some good points, you only looked at these accounts from a marketing standpoint. I'll use my account as a example (not in vid). I post my new art from time to time. But I also post my old art, so folks can see where I've been. I post about family and friends. I post about politics. My account is labeled under Artists, because I'm an artists, and I post art. NOT because it's only about art. I could easily make a new account just for that, if I wished. But I prefer to use my ArtStation account for that. I also use Instagram as a resource board via bookmark folders. Sorta like pinterest, but one that loads MUCH faster, without outside links.
I'm actually not under that impression at all! I am not sure if you noticed but this is part of a series on becoming a self employed artists by earning a living online with your art. This video is about the value of building an audience and so - followers matter. Never put effort in Instagram but I do post my art ''regularly'' . I liked this video, it confirms no effort = no followers and that's really cool and explains my account well. The only consistency I have is the theme and in the mean time I try different styles to find my own. I'm planning to take a different approach when I have the style I want, thanks.

It just begs the question; what about people who hop on trends to gain traction? People who experiment with digital & traditional? I'm waiting to see if his next video (on what you SHOULD do) will answer some things
Yes my next vid will clear some of this up but its like I said : this is for people who want to build an audience that supports them. Some of these things are Instagram focused but the reality is you are unlikely to get sizable appeal by trying everything under the sun for the rest of your art career. Theres always something where its subject matter or medium, or style that draws people to an individual creative.

he is wrong about most of his advice, please dont feel shitty about your artaccount, u should never feel shitty after someone who basicly say that u need to follow whatevery one elses is doing, JUST DO U AND STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF, theright followers will come and stick withyou, u dont need to follow this aestetic trend like others do, post whatever makes u content with your art, be it sketches, finished work, unfinished work, unrelated post to art, text posts or even weird things. u just should do u.

I'm guilty of not putting descriptions on my art. I never know what to say, but I'll try harder from now on. I should also update more, but I've become very cautious about doing that bc of how easily I slip into the mind set that my quicker drawings are not a representation of my ability, and become discouraged.

Also to anyone saying that they want to keep posting a variety of content in regards to both art content and other stuff as well, I have literally not followed or unfollowed an account bc they have had both art and other content and I only want art on my feed for my art account.

I'm still too sensitive to direct criticism that I didn't submit my insta for this, but I am still interested in what I can learn from the points you give!
What I'm taking away currently is:
-Unfollow some accounts I'm nolonger interested in (I have 1,024 following, but I'm following 1,678, so maybe getting down to 900 would be better!)
-Post mostly finished and clean work, WIPs are okay but make them look more appealing (in my case with digital work, maybe a direct crop of the piece, but with base colors, instead how I am now with you can see parts of the program and there is small text (usually "thank you for joining the art stream" haha)
It's only a couple but I'm sure I'll hear more and spot out more stuff! Thank you for these types of videos! Instagram is really a hard place to get noticed it seems, my main account currently is one I restarted last summer, so seeing me almost hit the milestone I last had on my old account after 2 years, almost hit again in 1 year is nice seeing I've made some improvement
I just don’t get it why is it a problem for you having a bigger following number than followers... of course if you are serious about your art you want the other way around I know cause I wanted too, and if you are really not interested on those accounts anymore make sense, but there are so many amazing artists out there how can you be following only 500 people? Like everyday you find new artists who you didn’t know before and they are amazing but you are not gonna follow them cause of numbers? Do people really check your art account and like your stuff but then decide not to follow cause you’re following more people than people are following you? I am sorry just doesn’t make sense.. I was looking to see if someone had the answer, I just found this video so I don’t know if he explains his opinion in another video... I hope that doesn’t sound rude I was just wondering.

I'm still following 500+ artists, simply I just want to support and be able to see their work again! Of course not everyone's art shows up but I'm still there to support when one does show up! I never really judge either on how many accounts one follows either! Its cool if it works for Josh, and think these are just tips then rather a step by step must do! I think maybe its good to have majority of the accounts you follow be art accounts! As sometimes I visit an artist page just to see who they follow so I can support other artists too. ^^

In my opinion some points you criticized are weird :/ Like they should just post one type of content over and over again... I would not follow someone who has no variety in their art. That gets boring pretty fast. Also the no caption and the post that make a bigger one together are personal preference.
He's not saying you shouldn't do it period, he's saying you shouldn't do it if what you're looking for is a big follower base.
I completely agree. I find myself feeling at odds with IG because it seems like you NEED to do the same thing over and over again to amass a following. I like to switch things up a lot and I have no doubt it's ruined my growth, but it's just who I am to continually experiment and I don't want to sacrifice that for numbers.

uhmm the way I see this is that you need to have a consistent armonic feed, it's not exactly about the style, we all follow an artist who's capable of drawing cartoon, anime and realism and still get the likes, what I mean is that you need to have an harmonic color palette, a consistent font-type, a consistent logo or watermark, etc.

I completely agree. There’s a popular Instagram artist who draws photo realistic pretty girls with super saturated makeup and initially I thought “wow never seen that before so cool!” But although they were doing everything right (they had a schedule, super consistent posts, showed progress videos) it just got boring and I unfollowed (not that’ll they’ll miss me lmao they’re hella successful). That particular model feels stifling and I’m too much of an unfortunate mess to follow it 😅 it’ll hurt my growth but life is too short

I think you had a lot of genuinely valid advice and critiques, but I think its a bit hypocritical how you're telling an Instagram account with 2x your insta following how you personally don't believe they would have that following without them having a youtube channel. Also on your Instagram accounts, you post the same "sketch" drawings with little variety or interesting pieces. Just my two cents, not trying to hate.
I never mentioned their channel, Its based off of my knowledge about the engagement of videos and their post types. You don’t need to have the exact same results to have credible information about a topic. But your opinion is valid as well!

I enjoy watching your videos, and like your good sense of humor and style. One thing that occurs to me though and bothers me is that it seems according to you, art is all about getting likes, followers and clicks.
How about the simple and pure satisfaction of having created something for yourself, and be proud of it! I don't think pure artist make art to get as much attention as possible, and create with that in mind. It is the expression of their personal journey and vision on life?

I enjoyed this. Instagram is not my natural social media, but enjoyed this break down. I'm on instagram but I'm a photographer, I get a lot out of Ergo Josh. Treating your art as a business is the thing he preaches well, which at times feels at odds to being an artist.
Conclusion: being famous isn't an option anymore

Josh, you seem to be under the impression that all instagram artists are after followers. When that is far from true.
Some artists are just experimenting. Some, like myself, are simply sharing because they can. And some, like yourself, are using it as a marketing tool.
Although you made some good points, you only looked at these accounts from a marketing standpoint. I'll use my account as a example (not in vid). I post my new art from time to time. But I also post my old art, so folks can see where I've been. I post about family and friends. I post about politics. My account is labeled under Artists, because I'm an artists, and I post art. NOT because it's only about art. I could easily make a new account just for that, if I wished. But I prefer to use my ArtStation account for that. I also use Instagram as a resource board via bookmark folders. Sorta like pinterest, but one that loads MUCH faster, without outside links.

This video is about the value of building an audience and so - followers matter. Never put effort in Instagram but I do post my art ''regularly'' . I liked this video, it confirms no effort = no followers and that's really cool and explains my account well. The only consistency I have is the theme and in the mean time I try different styles to find my own. I'm planning to take a different approach when I have the style I want, thanks.

It's frustrating because I know all the things I'm doing wrong, I just hate using Instagram(especially since the major changes to the algorithm) so much that I can't find motivation to use the app even though I know that it's basically integral to having a successful career in art in modern society.
