Easily the best show you've put out Evan. Looking back on Magic history/lore is always entertaining. Seriously dude, if this show ever stops I might have to go sit in a corner and have myself a little weep.
I got to see this yesterday, and I'm blown away by how well made these have become. The sheer amount of knowledge and insight is almost ridiculous. Keep doing your thing, Ewan, and I'll keep supporting you.
This video is just amazing. The history collected here is great. I was working on researching this for my packcracking series. This goes well beyond what I had found. Well done Even, well done.
This is great. Definitely what this community needed; for a game that's so caught up in the past, having a way to show people what it's all about is invaluable.
thanks a lot for sharing. I'm really glad to see your lore series; I got into magic recently but I always remembered my brothers playing this game when I was really young. its such a blast from the past to see these cards in this video. please keep producing more videos on magic lore. its such a treat :-)
Shahrazad was so much fun to play with in casual EDH before they banned it in Vintage. I would cast it and during the "mini game" I would attempt to cast Ring of Maruf in order to bring back Shahrazad to cast it again in the "mini game" for it to go into a "mini mini game"
This was a great review of Magic's first set. As an old player to the game, I learned tons of new things I didn't know before. Great job with the research effort it took to uncover all these details.
Outstanding video! I'm really enjoying this series. A friend introduced a few of us to MTG shortly after New Years 1994, and we bought whatever we could find. After Unlimited dried up, we were so bummed to go to the comic store and ONLY be able to pick up Arabian Nights boosters. Fortunately, we were hooked enough that we continued to do so! I am very fortunate to have a full Arabian set. Dollar value aside, it represents my earliest memories of this great game.
I only started playing during Revised and stopped shortly after... er... what did they call it? 4th Ed? I haven't played for literal decades and they keep printing these things out. I think they're on 20th Edition or something. But ooh, my glorious Dual-lands collection.
Andrew Chapman Close! I believe M15 is the 16th core set. I had an addiction for dual lands. Whenever trading, I'd make sure to grab those at any cost. Sold a bunch a few years ago, but I still have quite a few.
I still have them all in a box. I'm too much of a packrat to be considered a card investor. I just never let things go. Relatedly, dual lands are surprisingly expensive these days.
Andrew Chapman Indeed! I helped a couple friends sell some of theirs recently, and they did quite well for stuff that had been packed in boxes for over a decade.
Enjoy your work as always, Evan. Just one nitpick: for the Ruhk Egg portion, you probably could have had the rule clarification bit that had the ruhk egg in it :\
I can clearly remember being at the hobby shop buying RC car parts and trying to get the attention of the workers to help me, but they were excitedly unboxing a shipment of new Arabian Nights and were completely ignoring me. They were talking about how many packs they could keep vs. how many they had to sell to customers, some of whom were already lined up waiting. I was intrigued, but we were supposed to be Christmas shopping and my Dad was pissed it was taking so long because he didn't want to go to the hobby store in the first place, so we left and went to the mall. Even worse is that I can remember months before that browsing around in the checkout line and picking up Alpha or Beta boxes and boosters, reading the packs and deciding against buying some. Eight months later I was spending all my money on Revised cards. At least I have a shitload of dual lands... (and regular ones, half the time I could only get starter decks because the boosters sold out immediately) Whenever I watch people opening Alphas and Betas I think of that time when I literally had them in my hands and could have bought them at retail.
Wow, excellent video!! I'm currently working on research for a video series covering the mythos behind the sets and it's great to see the information I can't rationalize in my series find a home! I'm working with several other people to get production values as good as yours and hope to launch around the release of M15 :)
Man I loved these early sets. I never opened a pack though but I loved Arabian nights lore. I started at ice age. I've always wanted to buy a box. Old cards are so cool in general. I love the color designs much more than the new ones. Maybe one day I'll get to open a pack
As always great job! Ok everyone, I think the next forgotten lore should be the Weatherlight Saga. This epic story line needs to be told to newer players who've never heard of it. What do you guys think should be the next episode?
What's awesome about this set is how most of the cards are just solid playables, even today, at least by limited magic standards, which is definitely not the case of other early magic sets. No grey ogres with drawbacks here.
Somewhat around 1996 I think I bought 1 Arabian Nights set A WEEK, on usenet from americans for around $750, because the price was almost double that here in Europe. (there was no Ebay) I paid for college that way..... the singles sold like hotdogs..... I can't believe I haven't kept ANY of these sets...... I only have left a few pages of assorted commons..
Arabian Knights, Legends, and Antiquities are such awesome sets. I wish I could have the experience of opening a booster from one of them, but sadly, they cost hundreds of dollars. I guess If I'm ever feeling like opening some old school sets I'll have to stick to Homelands and Fallen Empires.
The first time a plane was clearly separate from another was Ice Age if I'm not mistaken. It was the first expert expansion and, as such, introduced players to different places. I don't know what you mean exactly by "Planeswalking" (either players as planeswalkers or the actual card form. I'll assume it's the latter). If you meant card form, it was Lorwyn block.
Skyrim Sniper I meant planeswalkers as a lore element, which includes players being walkers. However it's awesome to know when the card was introduced!
Juzam Djinn? I used to hang out at the only comic book store in my small town. The owner, had a fucking AAAAAAMAZING Black/Green deck. If you're a MTG player, from the very beginning, you'll know that Dark Ritual, Juggernaut, Juzam Djinn Berserk & Chaos Orb was enough to trample the fuck out of you
Watching these reminds me of the horrible Reserved List. I understand that Mark Rosewater and Hasbro care about "Integrity" in maintaining the Reserved List, but it hurts the game.
+Paul Gaither While on one hand it hurts the game, on the other it is what allows for the game to continue on. After the Chronicles debacle, they don't want to turn players away by reprinting expensive cards... and since many of these cards are now at $100+ price tags, they don't want to "hurt" their consumers. Though we're seeing semi-aggressive reprints of cards not on the Restricted list, they are aware of the second market and don't want to have Chronicles 2, occur.
A sub game with your left over library, if that library barely contains any lands because of fetches the other player will have a really high win chance, whats not right about that?
FUCK I wish my 33k cards never would have burnt up in a house fire!!! i would have like 75% of arabian nights and most of the cards in beta, revised, unlimited all the way through urza's block! unfortunately no power 9 though...GRRRRRRRR
+Jellyfrosh No, agressive white is perfect. White is about devotion, orthodoxy and sacrifice for what is seen as a greater good. Jihad is just the muslim term for an holy war, it's like a crusade for Catholics. Red is more about disorder and chaos, it doesn't fit for a religious war call. In the context of Arabian Night, it's not a terrorist jihad. It's a medieval holy war. A modern jihad would be rather tricolor black/white/red.
"Summon Ali from Cairo" I love old cards. Great video. This is so entertainingly informative.
Informatively entertaining!
maxiewawa
No other show on UA-cam makes me pause to read something on screen as often as this one does.
Easily the best show you've put out Evan. Looking back on Magic history/lore is always entertaining.
Seriously dude, if this show ever stops I might have to go sit in a corner and have myself a little weep.
Agreed

Holy cow, this set is freaking sweet. The mythos is freaking amazin. The designs.... I cant stop about it its so cool
thanks a lot for sharing. I'm really glad to see your lore series; I got into magic recently but I always remembered my brothers playing this game when I was really young. its such a blast from the past to see these cards in this video.

Evan I really like these forgotten lore episodes. Great story telling and production. Keep it up man
Shahrazad was so much fun to play with in casual EDH before they banned it in Vintage. I would cast it and during the "mini game" I would attempt to cast Ring of Maruf in order to bring back Shahrazad to cast it again in the "mini game" for it to go into a "mini mini game"
Great job Evan. I really dig these videos. I like this mix of story lore, tournament history, and game development info.
Wow, been playing Magic for over 23 years and learned a lot about Arabian Nights I didn't know. Great video. :)
Super fun and extremely informative. Love the style of your narration, mixing the storyline of the MTG set and the anecdotes behind its creation...
This was a great review of Magic's first set. As an old player to the game, I learned tons of new things I didn't know before. Great job with the research effort it took to uncover all these details.
Nothing better than a nice punch of nostalgia early in the morning.
I've been waiting for these!
Awesome video Evan. One of the BEST videos on the history of the game!
This was a fantastic video. I've been playing since 1995, but still learned things in this video. Well done.
Man this is so interesting!! You should do this vids for all MTG sets!!
Loving this series, Evan. Keep it up!
This show is amazing! Thanks a lot for the effort put into it. I hope you continue doing it, as it is very entertaining and insightful!
Great, great video! Awesome idea, well executed, surprising information. I'd love to see this become a popular series!
I look forward to you doing each and every set. :-)
This was a great episode, thank you for sharing this with up
awesome video evan!
Very in depth and exhaustive
Outstanding video! I'm really enjoying this series.

This is absolutely incredible content!
this was a very good video and I really enjoyed watching it
Can you do one about the Weatherlight, Urza, Gerrard etc? mainly around the invasion period as for me it was the best time of it.
These are great, would love to see one for every set in this wonderful game
Enjoy your work as always, Evan. Just one nitpick: for the Ruhk Egg portion, you probably could have had the rule clarification bit that had the ruhk egg in it :\
Awesome Work! Thx so much for this great Work.
This show is amazing, thanks for making it.
keep up the good work, this is awesome.
I can clearly remember being at the hobby shop buying RC car parts and trying to get the attention of the workers to help me, but they were excitedly unboxing a shipment of new Arabian Nights and were completely ignoring me. More of these please...really interesting Evan.. THANK you :)
What a perfect video, what a perfect series.
wow this is really interesting. Awesome video, i have not even played mtg since the first Ravnica block
I love the intro music to Forgotten Lore (I love the series too) was it made for the show or is it from something?
Love your videos, as always.
Great video, I would like to see more of other sets.
Do Mirage next? It's my favorite alongside of Zendikar.
Great video as always.
Awesome and Informative video!

These videos are so great!
This is cool and all but are there any lore videos?
As always great job! Ok everyone, I think the next forgotten lore should be the Weatherlight Saga. This epic story line needs to be told to newer players who've never heard of it. What do you guys think should be the next episode?

Wish we re-visited this!!
Shahrazad was unbanned for a while in the early 2000's in vintage. Keeper played it in the sideboard for a: "win game one and stall game two" strategy
Doesn't seem like the best strategy for a combo deck, people can just instantly concede and take 10.
I love these videos
was not expecting this set
Somewhat around 1996 I think I bought 1 Arabian Nights set A WEEK, on usenet from americans for around $750, because the price was almost double that here in Europe. Well done Evan
amazing job woth this series i would like to see a video on alpha
My favourite set, so flavourful and used to be so fun to collect, too bad the prices went crazy up.
great video. Keep them coming
Do one on ravnica
Hooray I really like this series
Arabian Knights, Legends, and Antiquities are such awesome sets. I wish I could have the experience of opening a booster from one of them, but sadly, they cost hundreds of dollars. I guess If I'm ever feeling like opening some old school sets I'll have to stick to Homelands and Fallen Empires.
Any chance we can see a P3K Forgotten Lore?
I like these videos.
When was the concept of Planes and Planeswalking introduced? The block that introduced that must have been a bomb.
Skyrim Sniper
I meant planeswalkers as a lore element, which includes players being walkers. However it's awesome to know when the card was introduced!
I loved Sealed Deck league with Ante. So Ante was not all bad.
I used to have four Juzam Djinns cards...all gone now due to the wildfire of 2005...
Awesome!
"Forgotten Lore" = Awesome
Arabian nights was just awesome.
Arabian Nights had Rares....Pyramids for Example.
Juzam Djinn? I used to hang out at the only comic book store in my small town.
The owner, had a fucking AAAAAAMAZING Black/Green deck. If you're a MTG player, from the very beginning, you'll know that Dark Ritual, Juggernaut, Juzam Djinn Berserk & Chaos Orb was enough to trample the fuck out of you
Great video! But Ghazban Ogre transfers control, not ownership.
Please do Innistrad!
u should do the innistrad or ravnica if u do ravnica u need to do the original ravnica and return to ravnica cuz it would make since
More please!
What is the name of the guy who convinced them not to use different color backs. Cant understand him to save my life.
can't help but feel that his dictionary may have been shit. It'll b interesting to see a vid on kamigawa and the level of japanese actually used
Will they ever revisit this Arabian theme I wonder. Maybe Khans will be the closest we get.
disgraced101 Probably not, the PC police would get their panties in a knot if they ever did.
Do Urza's Block Next :V
Very cool.

Evan Irwin just went there
I sincerely love these. Like, I'm getting married to them tomorrow.
Love this. Your doing a great job, but annoying backgroundmusic is annoying.
shazrad seems super good in legacy because of fetch lands. those players will have no lands in the sub game :P
A sub game with your left over library, if that library barely contains any lands because of fetches the other player will have a really high win chance, whats not right about that?
none02910 How can you accuse someone of being wrong when you're this stupid
I think I have that Mountain XD ... somewhere.
it's worth more than 30€
progste FOUND IT ... its white border ,,, 0.30 cents?
***** no...a bit more than that

"Arabian Niiiiiiiights like a Arbian Mooooons....."
A bboooster box of arabian nights is $15,000. Holy fuck.
FUCK I wish my 33k cards never would have burnt up in a house fire!!! i would have like 75% of arabian nights and most of the cards in beta, revised, unlimited all the way through urza's block! unfortunately no power 9 though...GRRRRRRRR
i think youve found your calling sir.
This is like the pre-un's
My uncle have this deck
Sha-Ra-Zad
I have got ali baba!
It’s not all that special all he did was borrow the idea and put them on cardboard
Im a muslim who plays this cards,so these were the first cards.
There's a card called jihad? Should've been a red card.
+Jellyfrosh No, agressive white is perfect. White is about devotion, orthodoxy and sacrifice for what is seen as a greater good. hapjiwaya It's a bird! It's a plane! No! It's the joke that just went directly above your head!
Jellyfrosh nice try
Awesome!
