This was great and it really showcases why Rise is my favorite set of all time. So many good cards printed, so much good limited play and the story was engrossing and flavorful.
The element of Rise Limited that I enjoyed the most was that since the early game was usually not that crucial, I could spend most of the time planning out lines of optimal play, on my opponent's turn. Spawn also provided a lot of opportunities for ramp, which meant that I could play big, hulking monsters on turn five or six sometimes. That's what appealed to my inner Spike, and my inner Timmy.
GIVE ME BACK MY WASTED YEARS! Very good storytelling, I love to watch these episodes. All the memories of the Zendikar block keep coming back over and over again. I can still feel the spirit of the reckless draft format of Zendikar, and the slow ass Rise of the Eldrazi draft format. But even though people like me desire to end magic games (or people) fast, Rise of the Eldrazi was a set I have a lot of respect for. It just felt so great, because the set actually had 5 colors, unlike ZEN + WWK, where there were 3 colors missing. The Eldrazi creatures were monumental, you now had a mana sink for floody games with the leveling, and a lot of cards were just brilliantly designed and synergized so well. Also, I don't know if I am the only one - watching this makes me somehow recall some things happening at that time in my personal life, I don't know - it feels weird, however makes me happy, because those were brilliant times. It is very astonishing that a card game that has accompanied me for more than a decade is a thing that still gives me the thrills whenever I see new spoilers - keep it up, Wizards. If you ever print a block like Urza's Saga, Zendikar or Innistrad again I will probably die from a heart attack. To this very day I still keep my cards from the Zendikar block as a special treasure. In my Cube and in my heart, secretly hoping that this game will outlive us all.
This was an extremely fun set, and the excitement generated by the cards were rightfully justified. Just the shenanigans in limited made this a legend in Magic history.
I think these are some of the most insightful videos I have ever watched. I don't comment a lot, but this series actually won you a sub from me. Please keep making these, watching someone be so passionate about magic is really refreshing.
This video was so awesome! I loved hearing the story bits combined with the cards and their impact in the game. Please continue making videos like this.
Honestly, almost every block deserves a forgotten lore. I can't patron right now, but as soon as i'm able i'm willing. I encourage all of you who can't patron to like, subscribe, and most importantly show this to your magic playing friends. Let's spread the lore love!
Do you think WoTC could try out a block built around a Villain vs Villain concept, say the Eldrazi Vs. New Phyrexia with Nicol Bolas waiting in the wings to capitalize on the victor. Maybe the Eldrazi spill over into Mirrodin/New Phyrexia and players now have the odd choice of annihilating the corruption (along with the entire plane) or defending it. I can't think of how the Mechanics could work but the narrative has a lot of potential.
I really think they are going back to Zendikar in the next block... 1. They really need to reprint some modern staples like Fetchlands, Inquisition, etc... 2. Nissa is coming back in M15 (also the action figure) 3. Next block is bottom up design... 4. It's one of only 3 serious contenders for a returning plane (the others are Alara and Dominaria) (5.) I think Evan suspects the same thing... (I don't think it's a coincidence that he started his Series with Zendikar)
The next block is cons of takir. A new plan which is the home of Sarkan. I don't remember what the middle set is but the final set in the block is dragons of takir and it's rumored the next block after will be the return to eldrazi because of Sarkans appearance again
Joshua Lewis Hmm, I looked that up and it seems like you are right. "Warlords of Khanar" "Khans of Tarkir" and "Dragons of Tarkir" seem to be trademarked for a TCG by WotC. I'm not sure if all of the names will be used, but at the very least they suggest that the fall 2014 set will take place on an original plane. It also seems very likely that this is Sarkhans home plane, given that we know that it's contolled by warlords and that Dragons are extinct there. So it makes sense storywise that they would somehow bring them back in the third set.
Now that Nissa is reprinted in M15, I wonder if we'll get a "Return to Zendikar" set in the future where she basically drags Sorin back to Zendikar and forces him to help her dispatch the Eldrazi and they meet Gideon Jura along the way and become the planeswalker trio to dispatch the Eldrazi threat.
I'm pretty sure there were colorless Spirit tokens in Kamigawa block that were not artifacts, so they predate the Eldrazi, but the Eldrazi were the first colorless non-artifact creature cards printed.
Warden of the First Tree, from Fate Reforged, is similar to Figure of Destiny, if not same mechanic wise. The only difference, is that the last ability, give it five +1/+1(I could be wrong. Don't remember it.) counters on it, and you can do it any number of times, if you have the lands for it. Seeing Figure of Destiny and what it can do, reminded me of Warden of the First Tree.
I've been hearing a lot about how the Conspiracy set is suppose to be hinting at the conspiracy that we are returning to Zendikar after Khans of Tarkir
the best part about magic is the the lore coincides with game play in all formats and in standard game play beyond casual. the idea is anyone can get old cards and new cards need to be better. we still have unopened boxes of urza
When it comes to planeswalkers trying to save zendikar there is also kiora who is trying to get sea monsters to fight the eldrazi and nissa who is trying to find sorin so he can fix her fuck ups
Zendikar will return. It is a very popular block. And since wizards is very focused on modern it is likely to reprint inquisition when they do. But it took 8 years to return to ravnica. See you in 2017.
I might be the only one, but I really want to see a Forgotten Lore: Kamigawa block trilogy. People get so hung up on how bad the mechanics were that they COMPLETELY overlook how flavorful the set was.
I feel like soon after Tarkir we'll go back to Zendikar, Sorin has gone to Tarkir to find Ugin, Ugin is dead but he's left clues on Tarkir of his Legacy and Sarkhan is being influenced mental by Ugin to go back in time and save the dragons from becoming extinct on Tarkir which might also bring Ugin back. At the same time Gideon has been on Ravnica for 2 sets now he has to have found allies and should be on his way back as we speak, and Kiora Atua (A.K.A. Kiora of the Crashing Waves) travelled to Theros to find sea monsters big enough to deal with the Eldrazi, if Kiora overcomes her new found God complex and avoids getting killed by Thassa she should be going back to Zendika shortly. We also haven't seen hair nor ear of Nissa Revane excluding her M15 Worldwaker card, from what her information on the Magic site tells us is that she's left Zendikar as well searching for some way to stop the Eldrazi, her new Worldwaker form is likely the result of her search and she is probably either on her way back or has returned and waiting for Sorin to return as they met up right after the Eldrazi escaped. We now have 6 (Sorin, Nissa, Gideon, Kiora, Sarkhan, and Ugin (and maybe the Lithomancer) all searching for a way to deal with the Eldrazi. So it is very likely if we don't find an answer to the Eldrazi problem by Louie we'll find one in the 2015 Block 1 and return to Zendikar will be Block 2 of the 2015/2016 Release Year
highly agree In Fate Reforged, we are going back in time to save Ugin from Nicol Bolas because Ugin and Sorin are two of the 3 walkers that sealed the Eldrazi away. Even within the story, we have no idea who the last walker is, as he's only known as The Lithomancer (rock mage, basically). Considering that this whole block is based around bringing back Ugin to seal the Eldrazi away, we could guess that we are going there next to do this sealing.
We now know that the lithomancer in nahri. Since she is self proclaimed protector of zendikar something seems to have happened to her to which doesn't seem good my theory is we will find out what happened to nahri in one to two blocks with fixing garruks curse being mixed in there too.
Mike L In-story, Emrakul and Kozilek have left Zendikar, leaving Ulamog There aren't any other brood leaders...in one of the flavor articles on the website, Ugin explains that what appears on planes is a projection of the actual 3 titans, and the broods are simply extensions, not actual beings So, no Check the end-ish of the article for just info about the truth of the Eldrazi, or read the whole thing if you want to read the first mention of Nahiri and a description of what happens when the Eldrazi have completely drained all the mana from a world magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/ur/lithomancer-2014-10-29
Off topic: Am I the only one who really wants to see Leshrac (that's what his name is spelled like I believe) printed? I know he was destroyed in a battle with Nicol Bolas but com'on, the "boogeyman" of the Multiverse deserves a card, right? And something rly good, not like a Jace, the Living Guildpact or smth.
First Chandra, then Nissa. Chandra went to the Eye of Ugin because 'Adventure!'. There were no Eldrazi at that point. She and Jace fought with Sarkhan, she cast Ghostfire, and the Eye is weakened. Keep in mind the _Eye of Ugin_ is the name of the place - it's not a 'thing'. The pressence of the Ghostfire weakened the magic in the chamber, while not opening the prison at once. The Eldrazi started to force their way out. _(Meanwhile, Gideon encounters some of the first Eldrazi, and after a hard battle went to Ravnice to seek help)_ The above described event is what led Sorin to reseal the Eldrazi, but his buddies Ugin and Mr. Lithomancer didn't show up, so he sought help. He found Nissa, and they travelled to the Eye, to try and strengthen the magic once again. However, Nissa had other intentions all along; by breaking the main hedron the Eldrazi would be set free once and for all, and she figured they'd just leave the plane. She was wrong. Sorin said ''screw _that_ jazz'' and planeswalked away. Nissa promised to find Sorin and drag him back.
I absolutely hated Rise of the Eldrazi. Yes, limited was good (but not triple Shadowmoor good), and it was pretty fun, unmatched in its "battlecruiser magicness" until Theros. However, I hated how opening packs sucked. It was a set that epitomized all Wizards stood for, with its value completely lopsided to mythic or go home. That...was its major blemish.
Not too impossible, but unlikely, since I think they will reprint Kiora in the next Zendikar block, if there willbe one, and Kiora was very recently printed...
Duskstone89 People are suspecting Kiora to be mono blue in M15 as Jace is staying in ravnica to help keep the guilds in tact. It also depends on if Gideon found the help he needed in ravnica
I think because the story was fascinated on Chandra for 14, also I know that Jace is trying to help with garruk but we'll see in m15 soon enough. I also know that they had some art promotion with Nissa.
Sarkhan gets some play in my Prossh deck both versions are great for the deck. Sarkan the Mad sacrifices himself (drawing creatures for Prossh to devour) to power the Dragon Prossh (Flavour) while Sarkhan Vol Powers all the creatures that come with Prossh. If anybody didn't know Sarkhans' back story he was a shaman that worshipped dragons on the war torn plane of Tarkir, however the warring tribes had driven the dragons of the plane to extinction and the interaction with a dragon spirit unlocked Sarkhans spark. After searching the planes for a dragon to pledge allegiance to he came across Nicol Bolas who offered some of his blood in exchange of Sarkhans allegiance. Thus Sarkhan the Mad was born and sent to Zendikar to investigate the Eye of Ugin. The rest is on Evins Forgotten Lore series. For flavor purposes Sarkhan always makes an appearance in my EDH decks where there are dragons. I play Sarkhan the Mad in Kaalia too (if you consider he can turn into a dragon thanks to Bolas. The -X ability is awesome in Kaalia, where he potentially kills himself drawing a dragon to turn into). Talking about flavor I would love wizards to print Urza as a legend for the purposes of commander in Izzet colors. I would argue Tolarian Academy goes in the deck for flavor, the same can said for Karn, Jhoira and Teferi.
Wait ... So Zendikar was basically left to the Eldrazi until a strong enough force could oppose it, meaning we could see Eldrazi creatures in another set?! Even a whole block?! Yeah I'll probably quit again if that happens. Annihilator is the most broken mechanic never banned in a TCG (and I started with Yugioh in 2003 and played some Yu Yu Hakusho so I know a thing or two about playing against broken mechanics.) Never thought I would see something from Wizards that would remind me of the frustrations of Yata Lock (from Yugioh) ever again.
Because they are very few and far between. Usually R&D knows what they are doing when it comes to Magic set design. Sure, they can have some OP stuff in standard and in other eternal formats occasionally, but for the most part, they don't try to purposely create cards that break the game every set like in Yugioh. Zendikar block was kind of the exception though, since they really wanted to see how high they can push the power creep, and they did. But in all reality, the only relevant annihilator cards were the Eldrazi gods and Eldrazi conscription. Other than that, they were hard to get off outside of mana ramping and cheating into play via other methods. So it's not as broken as you make it out to be.
Watching right after Battle for Zendikar got spoiled. The end of the the vid made me smile.
GIVE ME BACK MY WASTED YEARS!

love this episodes, please continue with forgotten lore!
I can spend hours reading lore relating to MTG, this show is a wonderful addition to my passion for MTG. Thank you for what you give the community!
I never comment on stuff online, but I just want to say that I love these Forgotten Lore videos! Love the show and keep up the good work!
Honestly, almost every block deserves a forgotten lore. I can't patron right now, but as soon as i'm able i'm willing. I encourage all of you who can't patron to like, subscribe, and most importantly show this to your magic playing friends. Let's spread the lore love!

My favorite set by far. Rise of the Eldrazi was my first set that i played and it was so much fun. Hope we someday return to Zendikar.
this was the set to get me back into magic, loved the eldrazi, my first pack after i started again had one
I love this Channel and find the forgotten lore episodes quite entertaining. Hope to see many more in the future.
This was the set that I started with. It's the standard I've used for every other set ever since. :)
Wasn't around for Eldrazi limited, came in during Dark Ascension, but love Drana as a commander. So much win on a stick.
I really think they are going back to Zendikar in the next block...

I mean as much as I would love that but, it's confirmed to be a new plane, maybe blood will be.

I love this series! Keep it up! This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for.
Simply AWESOME!!!! I would love to see more of these
wow, these videos are incredibly informative and in-depth! Thank you!
And we will be returning to Zendikar this fall.
These are great. Keep up the good work Evan!
wow I love the art on Drana
The background music is from Roosterteeth's "The Patch"
Please please PLEASE do one of these for the most resent Mirodin block. It not only was my first, but my favourite block ever :)
Don't worry, I didn't forget ROE's lore. I started playing magic between m10 an ZEN, so the ZEN block was my first lore I went through. Awesome times!
Please do more of this!
Awesome vid been waiting for this one since the last video
I am really digging these keep them up!
I'm pretty sure there were colorless Spirit tokens in Kamigawa block that were not artifacts, so they predate the Eldrazi, but the Eldrazi were the first colorless non-artifact creature cards printed.
Whole 2 min of the video dedicated to actual lore, nice one
My absolute favorite set in magic.
Love the series, wondering if you could do one on forgetting Broad's Names, Like after a few Johnny"Planes" Walker's
I would love if the next set returned to Zendikar. everything about the set and lore was awesome.
Can't wait for the innistrad block episodes.
Forgot to mention Kiora is a zendikar merfolk looking for krakens to fight the eldrazi, but good video
This is a great series, keep it up!
I think you should make a Lorwyn episode!
Warden of the First Tree, from Fate Reforged, is similar to Figure of Destiny, if not same mechanic wise. The only difference, is that the last ability, give it five +1/+1(I could be wrong. Favorite set.
I've been hearing a lot about how the Conspiracy set is suppose to be hinting at the conspiracy that we are returning to Zendikar after Khans of Tarkir
That Drana is so broken in a limited format.
Sarkhan the mad is amazing. It's a draw engine, a removal spell or a game ender. Allstar in EDH Dragons.
Zendikar, ahh my favorite block.
RIP Splinter Twin
Wow, this was very informative.
I want a LRW LORE!!! RIGHT NOW!
Just theck MTGSalvation Wiki
These are awesome!!! Keep it up
Rise of Yawgmoth is what I hope for.
And the return of Urza too
So awesome. Where is all of the source material found?
A Return to Zendikar with more full art lands would fulfill my life D'x
the best part about magic is the the lore coincides with game play in all formats and in standard game play beyond casual. the idea is anyone can get old cards and new cards need to be better. we still have unopened boxes of urza
Keep up the great videos! !
I love this I hope that forgotten lore goes to urza sage blok
Love the series

I started playing during Zendikar. It was such an amazing solid block of cards.
Yes we will!!!
I might be the only one, but I really want to see a Forgotten Lore: Kamigawa block trilogy. People get so hung up on how bad the mechanics were that they COMPLETELY overlook how flavorful the set was.
i got back in to magic in rise; ulamog was the first mythic i opened
My guess would be that he would be bringing Aurelia to Zendikar.
The two removal spells Evan? Induce Despair much?
I thought Sarkhan the Mad was used as a 1 or 2 of in Jund decks back in Alara-Zendikar standard?
This is a question?
"Sees play in today's modern constructed format" I had to grin at that.
Whats the music being used here?
I come from the future welcome back to zendikar
I feel like soon after Tarkir we'll go back to Zendikar, Sorin has gone to Tarkir to find Ugin, Ugin is dead but he's left clues on Tarkir of his Legacy and Sarkhan is being influenced mental by Ugin to go back in time and save the dragons from becoming extinct on Tarkir which might also bring Ugin back. Fark I want someone to tell me exactly how Gideon could even stand up to something that is hundreds of times larger than he is
By killng target tapped cretaure after everyone else dies :P
Raid Bombardemnt zerg rush. Those battleship players never had a chance...he he he.

Battle for zendikar here we come
I think that AIR still plays Dragonlord.
awesome!
Here we go Battle for Zendikar coming this fall
Keep them coming ...
It's confirmed that for October 2015 there will be Return to Zendikar
Promptly named Battle for Zendikar
I thought it was Nissa, not Chandra, that actually set the Eldrazi titans free...
iirc Nissa set Griselbrand free on Innistrad
Chandra started the process that let the eldrazi brood free but it was Nissa that let the big 3 out because she is an idiot
Nissa weakened the Seal, but Chandra actually unleashed them.
well shit. thanks for nothing, NIssa.
First Chandra, then Nissa. Chandra went to the Eye of Ugin because 'Adventure!'. There were no Eldrazi at that point. She and Jace fought with Sarkhan, she cast Ghostfire, and the Eye is weakened. I sure hope so.

Ok, I did not know that... Thank you =)
xxxblobxxx1 I'm not to huge on lore and what not but if that's the case why did they print Jace in 2014? Not that im questioning you, just interested.
I think because the story was fascinated on Chandra for 14, also I know that Jace is trying to help with garruk but we'll see in m15 soon enough. I also know that they had some art promotion with Nissa.
Could you do Portals 3 Kingdom?
wow great!
I prefer playing eldrazi set with Elvish Pipers!

timmy set!
Battle for zendikar!!!!
return of zendikar means reprint fetch land or more of it, not good.
Why the fuck not?
people who have a lot of fetch lands from Zendikar price will drop like crazy.. don't want my to drop.. example: like shock lands..
Affinity would like to have a word with you sir....

Wait, what? How can people always talk about Magic being so balanced when it has these two blemishes on it's face?!
So it's not as broken as you make it out to be.
gimme moooooaaaaarrrr !!!!! ^^
Chandra? You mean Nissa?
Lol modern was made with the zendikar block
The set that caused me to quit Magic (now back fully after Gatecrash) after starting in Magic 2010.
