When I moved to NYC right after college in 2002, the first apartment I lived in was right on Christopher Street, steps away from Stonewall. I was not homophobic but was in the back of my mind, a bit prejudiced. One weekend summer morning while sleeping in bed with a girl I had started dating from my classes, we heard a massive commotion in the street that woke us up. I mean, it was loud. Like a party. We pulled the curtains in the bedroom to see thousands of half naked men on floats and dancing on the street below us. It was the gay pride parade. She got really exited and since she was also a student, from Scotland, and had never experienced anything like it, decided we should get dressed and run downstairs to attend the celebration. She was very serious and I thought it sounded like a nightmare. We spent the next few hours walking around, meeting people and during the evening we had a couple of conversations with celebrating people in a neighborhood bar. Little by little, through her influence and the city's acceptance and tolerance, I completely shed any prejudice I had and fully accepted anyone and everything. Throughout the years I have told this story to friends and coworkers from the LGBTQ community and somewhat feel ashamed of my previous views. My children will never learn that prejudice. They will learn that we are truly all the same.
And you my friend are truly a great testimonial as to what being a great human being is. That's called growth and being open minded enough to look at life and learn from it. Thank you.

Watching this after listening to Jonathan Van Ness' podcast Getting Curious, the episode called "What's your Experience with the Binary?" and it's so interesting to watch JVN's learning and growth. In the podcast episode, JVN didn't know that around the time of stonewall, men and women couldn't wear more than 2 pieces of clothing deemed to be the opposite gender's. And in this video, he is the one teaching that history. Listen to his podcast, Getting Curious.
Jonathan is so correct about everything. I love that he loves everybody and thinks everybody is cute and beautiful. This is a wonderful way to go through life.

I didn't think it was possible to admire, respect and adore JVN any more than I already do -- then this happened.
Watching this while getting ready in the morning. Thank you Jonathan for making my day!
I absolutely love this duo, both so informative and entertaining at the same time. And JVN is so freaking cute, give me a makeover!!!
I didn't know I needed this until I just watched it. A delightful meeting of past and present.

I can't be the only one crying about all of these videos right? Seeing the cast of Queer Eye interact with such poise and elegance just makes me so happy like maybe they really are making this world a little better and maybe I could too?!
Lmao ruthless judgement of other people...prime pillar of mindfulness lol
I love how this turned out to be deeper than I thought. I love you Jonathan ❤.

I love how he just melts everyone's hearts with his honesty and irrepressible humour. How could anybody not love him??!! In a world full of Kardashians, we so need more Jonathans ❤
This. Is. Everything. Thanks for doing all these crossovers, Netflix...we love our boys!! :D
I love this. I do in so many ways. Understanding is love. I have watched this in a few times. Each time I feel I can learn from this honest conversation.
This is the collab I didn't know I needed!
Very true, what a great concept.
Netflix - Thank you for featuring difficult conversations. We need to see and hear modeling around how to phrase and express these things, if we ultimately want to build understanding and compassion. Your role is not going unnoticed. Also... JVN - love you!!!
