Small Stream BIG Numbers! UK Fly Fishing For Grayling Fishing - Suspension Nymphing

- Andy rigs his fly fishing kit for a session, hoping to catch grayling from small UK river. Using a euro style leader with a suspension nymphing indicator to cover the best water in the river, Andy uses his favourite flies for grayling in this mid-winter session. Creek fishing like this can be tough, but by learning how to read the water in his previous sessions he shows that winter fly fishing can be very productive!

Lovely to see a stream where the cormorants haven't been through and emptied! Long may it remain Black Death free!
🍻 I'll raise a glass to that Pete!
@@IBandAndyFishing I'm so sad! Have watched my little Derbyshire stream decline over the last 15 years. The days of catching fish in numbers are long gone. Been out today - never had a touch - but I guess it could be that I'm losing mine!
That's a real shame Pete, scratching my head to think which stream it could be, but hopefully at some point it comes back in to form. Not easy in this very cold weather, hopefully there's still a few there for you!
That’s a cracking days fishing. Great video again guys.👌🏻
You are so lucky to have a piece of water like this near you! I really enjoyed this video.
very cool session!
Thanks Robin, appreciated!
nice brown, keep up the great vids guys
Thanks bud, much appreciated!
What a vid and what a brown👌👌
Thanks Iwan, a real pretty one that wasn't it?!
Hi Guys Ive had an idea for a challenge whilst cleaning up my fly box.....Essentially a "Crapest fly in the box challenge" worst fly in box chosen by the opposition? no cheating though lol
Really enjoyed that.
very nice vlog. some nice fish. now its time for IB to try the stretch.
You realise you are make many anglers very jealous.
It's certainly not my intent, we're just very lucky that when we moved in together we prioritised being close to the rivers- it sure comes in handy at the moment!
I think IB mentioned having a crack at this place at some point, I'd like to a her take on it as she hasn't done much of this type of fishing
Brilliant . Thank you Andy . Really enjoyed that.
Thanks Stuart, appreciate the view!
Brilliant video, thanks.
Blimey Andy, that stretch was phenomenal! Looks and fished brilliant. A great vlog, thanks! 🎣👍
Thanks nick, pretty cool little spot isn't it?! Really appreciate the view!
Great day out Andy well done
Thanks Russell, it was a really fun few hours!
Nice to see a wee burn that has got so many fish in it. Keep up the good videos
Really enjoyed this video, lots of action! IB will be jealous. You are very lucky to have such good water close to your home. Please keep the videos coming.
Great video again Andy, i love the explanation etc as you progress through the pools.
It would be good to fish this again from Spring to Autumn.
Cheers
Thanks Peter, much appreciated! I do tend to chatter on, I'm just as bad without the camera on too 🙈😂
Here's hoping we get a full trout season!
loving the small stream stuff andy!
Thanks Joseph, I think there's gonna be some more of these in the future!
Nice Job Andy. I appreciate your commentary about all the different types of water and your thought process. The little stream at the bottom of my road is getting a stocking this year, so I'll definitely be doing some hyper local small stream fishing in the spring and applying what I've learned here. It was -14c this morning so it will be a little while yet.
Wow, minus 14 is seriously cold! Really glad you've enjoyed the small stream stuff, as you probably guessed I really did too!
Some lovely grayling again Andy, great vlog, you’re so lucky to have such a lovely small water in your doorstep!!🤣🤣
Keep up with the superb, instructive, entertaining and informative filming!
👍👍
Thanks Kim! Did you manage to get out?
@@IBandAndyFishing tomorrow I hope...........
Slightly larger water🥶😊
By the bridge.....
Let me know how you get on!

@@IBandAndyFishing I’m going to be using your flies on euro; hoping for a good session!
Awesome video! I love when you show the flies with the b roll
That stream is a great find Andy
Just watching your Stillwater video on my television and this on my phone. Two different seasons! We've had a mellow winter over here but this last week a Polar Vortex got us, would be a fatal decision to be outside for more than a few minutes! Your Videos are do well done! IB mutters to herself like she is sure something bad will happen but you are a lucky fellow Andy as she is a lucky woman. I hope to come back to the UK for a visit after Covid, maybe I can hire you.
In the meantime, be safe, be well and try to reassure IB that she is amazing!
Thanks very much Kerry! Amazing how much of the world is experiencing such cold weather at the moment isn't it? I got lucky this time, the following day was a lot more tough that's for sure!
@@IBandAndyFishing actually for two Winters now we have avoided the Ambient temperature of colder than -40C we have had this with Windchill, but not the actual ambient temperature, so for us it has been less cold and our whole winter was pretty nice until about ten days ago when He'll came for a visit. We still avoided a super low ambient temp thank gosh.
Nice angling, lovely wee stream full of fish. Iam use to fishing the tweed where the stamp of grayling are 2lb plus! with alot of smaller fish in amongst them. Love your videos keep them coming.
I think you'd struggle to fit a 2lber in some of the pools on this place! I find fishing the small streams you have to be accepting of the smaller stamp, every one is a monster in here! 👍
Wow what a great session, wish we had grayling water here 👏👏
Cheers Zach, got lucky again didn't I?! How are you feeling? On the up I hope?
Doing well thanks Andy, it'll be a slow recovery but I'm getting better every day. Meant to say, it will be good to see you have a go in this stream when it's troot time 😁
Nice one Andy, shame I couldn't get a trip over to you this winter for a session on those wonder fish. Nice clip mate, it put me in the mood for grayling fishing.
There is loads of small streams where you live ,I would love to see you do more .
We'll definitely be doing more this year, like you say we're blessed with small venues! There are a few access issues but I think we can make it happen!
How I envy you with so much Grayling water nearby. I live in suburban Chicago and most of our decent trout water is about a two or three hour drive. I’ve always wanted to catch a Grayling and was lucky enough to catch a six inch one in Yellowstone National Park. I’m hoping to be able to take trip to the UK if you are available perhaps I could hire you as a guide.
I love your videos. Not only are they entertaining but I’ve learned a lot about euro nymphing too. Your videos are quite educational too. Keep up the good work.
Dale that's a really kind comment, thank you so much! It's still so exciting to us that folks thousands of miles away watch our vlogs, we never imagined it!
No doubt regarding us being lucky with location, though it was one of the negotiations when IB and I decided to move in together 🙈😂
Which of the rivers in the states have good numbers of grayling?
I think a good video would be how you would fish that river for trout in the summer when everything has grown. Keep up the good work 👍🏼
100%I'll be coming back here in the trout season! Thanks Andy!
@@IBandAndyFishing perfect. Will keep an eye out for it. I have more small streams in my area. Looking forward to seeing how you approach it.
Some nice fish in that wee stream
great vid i love watching fishing tiny streams
Cheers Rob, we enjoy making them!
Got to see if i can meet up with Andy and Ieva, my wife wana start flyfish, im a terrible teacher but i think Ieva would be perfect to show my wife how to cast 😁 this summer, if we are aloude to travel, me and the wife and lad going to northen sweden to fish pike, will bring the flyrod to catch food, trout and greyling. Will defently show you both the fish up that end of the world. Great film and you make me wana go fishing!!!
And Andy knows that red tag is a CLASSIC greyling fly, together with deep purple.
nice one Andy.
Cheers Steve, thanks for watching!
Great film, lovely to see, I’m out tomorrow after grayling...... not sure I’ll manage the numbers you found.... great angling
Thanks Andrew! It doesn't go like this every time I can assure you 🙈😂
Tight lines for tomorrow!
Hi Andy - I have really enjoyed this short series of video on small streams - great improvising with the French leader here which would be useful on some of the waters I fish - there are small streams near me I have found on local walks during lockdown - and on doing some research to find out if anyone has the fishing rights I discovered that the E.A. stocked grayling there over a five year period - I have spoken to a couple of anglers on a local pond where one of the streams flows past and they both say that no one has the rights and that they know anglers who just go along and fish them with no issues - basically what we did as kids !!!! - I have spoken to an angler trotting one of these streams who catches roach and small chub - all local enquiries lead me to think that these rivers have no clubs with rights - at the moment the local tackle shops are for closed and as far as I am aware there is no central or local records of fishing clubs - although the E.A. will probably know if they have stocked here - might be worth a call to them - I was just interested how you went about access here - was it just a rock up and see if anyone challenged you - or was it a more formal approach to known owners - Thanks - Steve.
Hi Steve, great questions and very important ones. In this vlog I'm actually fishing on private land, invited by a local landowner, but in the previous two I was fishing an area not controlled by a club and the land is council land. Your best point of reference for this would be contacting your local council. Remember that if the land is private then so is the fishing, regardless of whether or not a club controls it - always best to ask your land owner 👍
@@IBandAndyFishing - Thanks for that advice Andy - I have dealt with leases for fishing clubs and am still on the committee of one - but those permissions are all very formalised - these stretches would seem to not be owned or rented by any club - the council actually own the pond I referred to and rent those rights to a local club with the river running close by - I hadn't considered the council and they were there last week doing tree maintenance work so that is probably the best starting point locally - land ownership and fishing rights can get very involved and interesting - I just wanted to be casting a line without infringing anyone's fishing rights - roll on when we can get on the "main" rivers again - Derwent, Dove and Lathkill for me - in the meantime these little streams and brooks look an interesting alternative - Tight Lines - Steve.
Lovely to see you continuing to get out fishing. We have no grayling fishing near me in Lincs but I’m going to give that indicator rig a go on my local river for coarse fish. I’ve got a little 4wt that gets me across the river on a floating line.
Thanks Bob! Yeah you're in a bit of a quiet zone for river game Angling in lincs aren't you? It'll definitely work for coarse fish though!
@@IBandAndyFishing certainly am. The nearest is probably River Witham at Long Bennington but that’s over an hour away so haven’t been able to get near with lockdown. Even the local trout stillwaters are closed at the moment. At least I have the chance of the odd pike or some roach nearby. Thankfully I get to watch you guys nailing the river fishing every Friday.
I guess that's the great thing in the UK, we're always near to some sort of fishing, and it's all good fun!
Good video as always keep up the good work
Thanks Stephen, hope you're catching a few!
Great session Andy , the brown Trout are awsome. Stay safe guys and warm , 33 here in Brisbane today 👅😂😂😂😂. I'm an ex Pat so i know what the winters are like in the UK , you can keep them 😂😂👍
Sure we can't put a little bit of this winter in the post for you?!
@@IBandAndyFishing ,yes please 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Great set of vids! Love watching you fish that river, shame I moved out of the town. Not fished it since I was 12 years old.
Just looking forward to getting back on the dove and Derwent
I totally feel you on that one, I can't remember what the derwent looks like!
@@IBandAndyFishing gravy when I last went to inspect it 🤣
I can imagine so, we've really copped it for the last couple of months. It may be minus 5 but at least it isn't raining any more 😂
Good going 👍
Thanks James, glad you enjoyed it!
Ive set up a tab at the Bar Guys, Drinks on me!
Love this video, really shows nicely the evolution of a keen angler on a mission. Nice one Mate.
I can't wait for the day when Bars are a real thing again!
I think what we saw over 3 vlogs there was me sharpen up on my small stream fishing after a few years of not doing it, and it's really ignited the fire! Thanks Mark!
@@IBandAndyFishing yeah I miss a pint and and a lunch at a pub on a river.
Yes definitely saw you get sharp on it! Really good stuff. I’ve had to avoid my local small streams due to lots of people around. But managed to get on the Exe a few times.
Can’t wait till March now.... “I’m going fishing....I may be gone some time”
Thanks again great stuff love you guys!
It won't be long will it? Here's hoping! Pub lunch and a trout on a dry fly, not too much to ask for is it?!
@@IBandAndyFishing Ah mate literally making me fill up thinking if I cant do that again, i think i would just go rogue at that point and build my own pub cabin in the woods by the river, set up some sort of water powered Wi Fi be alright wouldnt it lol
We'd be the first customers! 😂
What a session! We'll have to go sometime as it's just rude to ignore this right on our doorstep. I just know I'll lose flies in the trees...
Just take your time, there's no need to rush on a little river like this! 👍👍
I did wonder if you would re visit this week, you haven't disappointed...😀
The previous sessions lit the flame a little, plus with the rivers still a bit high this was really the only option!
@@IBandAndyFishing , it's one of them little locations that you can keep in the back of your mind if again your main locations fail to deliver..
I'll definitely be having a sneak around here at the start of the trout season, put it that way!
@@IBandAndyFishing don't blame you..
Loved the adaptation of the rig, with float stops on the indicator...One I'm going to try..👍
Reeevieeoowtoouesday!!!

Hi ib and Andy, how do you find these small rivers, do you do research on these and are they day ticket rivers or syndicate waters, many thanks Richard.
MORE BABY BROOK!! PLEASE
That's a good idea! Yes!
Love the videos so much honestly have learnt so much from watching them all, would love to see a little video about this set up or even just a little info like would you just check the rivers levels and setup the indicator that depth and just start from that and either move up or down depending on each cast
Not too sure where you from in the uk. I’ve got the river lambourn right outside my house and the amount of trout and grayling I can’t is unbelievable. Biggest grayling I’ve seen come out was near English record. Top videos as well mate
We're in Derbyshire Joshua. The Lambourn is a fabulous river, great job on all those fish!
brave man ! Great session though
Thanks nick, couldn't resist while the conditions are good! 👍
Andy, what make is your floating net please? (Great video too, keep them coming!)
Excellent video Andy and nice brownies and grayling. Just thinking do you always tie flies on in conventional manner or ever tie figure 8 loop so you can lasso your flies for quick change method.
I always tie conventionally, I actually think that the time taken to tie a fly on is really important. I think I mentioned in the vlog that at one point I left the first pool alone for five minutes after I'd waded through it, it let's the pool settle a wee bit 👍👍
Great video, could you pls show up close your float indicator rig ?
Loving the videos of the small streams , any thoughts of a trout fly pack for the coming season ? Keep up the good work 👍

Cracking looking stream Andy, have you got a link to how you make up the sliding indicator? Cheers 👍
Here you go Jason, thank very much!

@@IBandAndyFishing cheers buddy
excellent work..would you use a similar adjustable depth rig for bigger, deeper water?...i'm thinking pools 6-9ft deep on heavier flies... I could hold the line back at the surface indicator until the nymphs sank before letting them drift? great video again and thanks for all the excellent info, john
Hi John, definitely yes, I use it a lot on the dove, wye and sometimes the derwent too. You can find out more about it here - ua-cam.com/video/-abFnc0w05Q/v-deo.html
@@IBandAndyFishing great, will take a look now, thanks
@@IBandAndyFishing really need to get a couple of days booked in with you when we are able to travel...will email direct
Great vid. Whats the logic behind going french leader and a sliding indicator instead of 1) french leader/mono indicator or 2) floating line/sliding indicator?
Hi Rhys, so in the first of these three vlogs I used the French leader and spent most of the day snagged- because the river is quite over grown you can't get long drifts so you need to use slightly heavier flies than you'd want. It drove me nuts! Regarding the fly line, again such short drifts meant at most I'd only ever have 10-15' of fly line out, so I'm never going to load the rod anyway. With the stream being small and relatively shallow I also didn't like the idea of fly line as I feel it could spook fish. A sliding indicator on the French leader seems to me to be the most simple solution and it proved to be really effective 👍
@@IBandAndyFishing Cheers andy
@@RhysFishes nice to see you here mate!

Awesome location Andy! What a great bit of water to have on your doorstep :) what make of indicator are you using if you don't mind me asking? Never tried suspension nymphing before would like to try. thanks
Nice vid Andy ,but it looks like float fishing to me
Nice work Andy. What size were the flies you used? Thank you.
Hi Jeff, thank you! All of these were either 14s or 16s 👍
just got a fly setup for sea bass

How deep is the water u fish in with the bung?
Between 2 and 4 feet Scott, it's not a deep little stream 👍

Thanks Scott, let us know how you get on!
Water river you fishing?
We tend not to share venues Antony, plus this particular one is on private land 👍
💜💜👍👍🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣
❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥
Why are you using a 10 ft rod on a small stream surely a 9 footer would have been more practical
I don't have a light 9' rod David, otherwise that might have been a good option. That said, in this area of the little stream the 10'er wasn't really a problem and it gives a lithe extra reach on the bow and arrow casts 👍
I’m surprised you don’t have a light short rod perhaps a good idea for a present 😉
You're definitely talking to much all the time, please be quite some times...
Lots of comments on this video film folks saying they like the commentary and me talking through what I'm doing. Can't really win 🤷♂️
