Mine is a chili recipe my dad and I both LOVE!!! We always make a big batch and keep a container in both the fridge and the freezer for later. Simple ground beef, onion, green bell pepper, a jalapeno, two kinds of canned beans, and some cheap spices and herbs. Makes for fantastic taco or burrito fillings, an addition to rice, alone or with an egg on it! Altogether the ingredients cost maybe $10! EDIT: Forgot to mention the can of diced tomatos to give it that much needed moisture and tomato zing!

I'm so sorry about your husband. I don't know if I've ever made any of the recipes she has shared, at least not intentionally. But I've been watching her for years anyway, just because she's that relaxing and enjoyable. By the time she's finished saying her opening line, I've already relaxed and am in a better mood, every time. And I only get more relaxed and in a better mood the more she speaks.
I think he meant kidney beans with chili seasoning, BUT it is evident it works great with a can of beef chili with beans too. There are a million ways to alter that basic idea, and most of those are probably fantastic.
I love beans in my chili! I often add several types to a can or two of chili. I like the idea of the baked beans in this dish, add some cornbread and dinner is ready! And Bonus Points to you for mentioning brown bread!! My mom is from Providence and we always had it growing up in Miami. 💙
Mom makes something similar she calls smokey-po, is basically smoked sausage, potatoes, diced onion, green beans. Tried to look it up and it may also be called Hoosier stew. Never had it as a kid. Moved her in now that she's older and was thrilled to eat it.
Mom used to make something similar. She used cans of baked beans, fried kielbasa or smoked sausage, diced yellow onions. She would make garlic toast on the side. It was simple, cheap, easy and filling. I used to joke to my British friends on the online game I played that I liked beans and toast also. I told them how to make it and a lot of them liked it. If my mom ever made it and had taters she'd slice em and make fried taters on the side.
My dad told us that during the depre😢ssion they only occasionally had dessert. They were allowed to pick a leaf of lettuce, sprinkle it with a little sugar, roll it up and eat. 7:02 ssion
I was just looking up bean recipes yesterday as my job cut my hours, so money is REALLY tight. This recipe would be such a great thing to take to work for my lunch. Thank you, Dean, for sending in the recipes and to you, Emmy, for making it.
In Mexico we have our version of this, but instead of chili beans and sausage, we add chorizo, freshly cooked beans and tomatoes too, at the end so they don’t overcook. We eat this with bolillo bread or tortillas of course 😚🤌🏻
Just a heads up on Emmy's Helix Sleep sponsorship. Helix mattresses were pretty good prior to the purchase of the company by Cerberus Capital Management who also bought Brooklyn Bedding at the same time and consolidated them into 3z and all the mattresses they sell are now made in the Brooklyn Bedding factory in Arizona. You may remember them as the ones that bought Chrysler after Daimler Benz withdrew from their merger. Cerberus was the company that said they wouldn't honor any Dodge/Jeep/Ram/Chrysler/Mopar warranties from prior to their purchase since they were the "new" Chrysler.
Emmy I do see a mistake that will effect your finished product. The second ingredient is "1 can of chili beans" You got a can of chili WITH beans, which is unfortunately something else entirely. I would recommend remaking this and using a can of Red Kidney Beans instead! ❤
@@thegodferret193 The chili beans I'm sure he's referring to, is called chili beans and the chili beans are seasoned with all sorts of chili seasonings, but no meat they're basically ready to dump into your pot of chili and they have great flavor😊
Hey, Emmymade! Love your channel. Just a note about those spikes on the underside of the lid - They can hold a big hunk of meat for you while you shred it it after you cook it in the Dutch Oven. If you are strong, you can hold with a potholder on your hand so the lid rim is over the pot then shred some off the huge hunk or take cuts out and pull them through the spikes with a fork to shred, then scoot that into the pot. If you need to, you can set the lid upside down on a nest of towels and shred with both hands, taking what you shred back into the hot pot. Then, you can stir it into the soup, stew, or juices, adding sauce as you like. Just another tricky feature the cast iron folks built in! I hope this is fun and functional for you!
Beans the magical fruit! I'm sure the chilli was delicious in this recipe. Chili beans are beans containing chili powder. For the same cost, you made the recipe better! Thanks, Emmy ❤
I think most families have a recipe similar to this one. I personally prefer browned ground beef in mine instead of sausage and a touch of brown sugar. Any variation is a rib sticking good meal that goes great with your favorite corn bread. 👍
Oh, we are making this at our house soon! And making steamed rice to go with it. I bet this would taste good in a tortilla with some cheddar. Reminds me of a cowboy beans recipe my manager at the spice shop shared with me years ago.
My go to budget meal is Rice, Onions, Beans or refried beans and Sweet Potato or I might treat myself to Ground Turkey then sometimes I would add that to a pan fried corn tortilla and green salsa for extra pizazz.
one thing I learned from years of eating green peppers, was that I love four small green peppers, over one big green pepper because the smaller green pepper has a much better skin to flesh ratio.give it a try and hope it helps. the chew is less but the flavor is sweeter.
Most of my go-to's include doing something with leftovers, reheat and either add cheese or a can of cream of soup or eggs, depending on whether it needs some richness or just more protein. Most dishes in our house involve an onion, but the onions did not do well in my garden this year, a lot of them went mushy on me. One of the best places I've found to put onions is in between tomato and pepper plants, those often do better than onions that were planted in a row.
This takes me back we used to make one pan meals like this and variations in boyscouts on cold nights it was the best, help keep you warm while talking around the fire.
❤❤❤ Emmy thank you for making these recipes videos I have tried a lot of your recipes and have enjoyed them so much again thank you so much. Keep it up ❤❤❤
Oh no emmy! You got the wrong beans! Chili Beans are different than chili with beans! I hope to see you revisit this one so Dean can see you try his recipe again!
Because of the sweetness of the baked beans, my mother had a different recipe for those. Can of diced tomatoes, onions, hotdog wieners and bacon pieces (from a cheaper package of “ends and pieces”). Sprinkle with brown sugar and sugar, bake until everything is hot and melted. Not the healthiest but comfort food.
I've made this all the time n tweak it like adding cheddar cheese or any cheese lol serve as a dip too I also pan fry the potatoes partly through n then add sausage n fry together with the onions n peppers
My mom has always made a similar dish, though it omits the beans. So it's just the taters, sausage, and veggies. I make it all the time now that I live on my own! Add some ketchup or ranch on top and it's sooo good!
This looks so good! It reminds me of something i grew up eating. My dad called it hobo stew. It was elbow macaroni, baked beans and ground beef. Topped with any sauce you like. My dad used open pit and i usually used ketchup.
This reminds me of something we'd have in school on occasion called "Cowboy Stew". I remember it had ground beef, and various veggies. I suspect it was a way to use up ingredients
Our family has a slow cooker version called poorman's stew. 1 lb of ground beef fried up, 1 onion chopped, 2 can's of pork and beans, 1 can of kidney beans and 1 can of butter beans. Ketchup, brown sugar and worshire sauce to taste. you could even add in another can of kidney and butter beans to bump up the amount. put the fried burger in a slow cooker, add everything else and stir it up. Put it on high for about 4 to 5 hours till the consistency you want. Great the next day and the day after that. I tend to put it on rice or make a casserole with it with cornbread on top later in the week.
That looked great. But living in the Netherlands, I would have to change some things. Kielbasa would be a bit difficult to get, but we have good smoked sausages. Our baked beans are different, ours come in a tomato sauce and the chili beans are just beans with a chili sauce. It would still make a good dinner though, I'm quite sure.
Kielbasa is a Polish sausage, I’m sure you could find some in the Netherlands! I find them easily in my local shop in Ireland, although we have a large Polish population here so maybe that’s why.
@@neamhdhlisteanach6720 I live in Amsterdam, but most Poles went to different places mostly. Sure you can find Polish shops in the Netherlands, but not much within my reach. Most of them went to work in agriculture and I don't know the situation at the moment. I have a feeling a lot of them went back home, because things got better back in Poland. We've never had many of them in Amsterdam. I have found a Balkan shop nearby, but it's quite expensive. So I think I'll just stick to my 'gerookte worst' which will work definitely quite fine with it.
Used to have a regular weekend meal centering on picking up fresh seasonal veggies at the Saturday morning farmers market. I’d head to my petsit/house sit job having already packed burrito size tortillas, cream cheese, and a can or two of ranch style beans (black background with white lettering, classic/onion/jalapeño options, v popular in Tx). I’d just clean, chop, and stir fry a portion or two of veggies. While they cooked I’d put a fat shmear of cream cheese down the center of a tortilla and when the veg neared done, tip in half a can of ranch style beans in sauce. When it was warmed through, fill and roll the burrito(s). The ranch style sauce has enough seasoning to carry flavorsome veg but if you wanted to bulk it up with rice for a family or meal prepping, some standard seasoning blend would be nice. Or for my spouse, forego the beans and add sardines in lemon or harissa.
The first part of the recipe before the beans (sausage, potato, onion, and pepper) was one of our easy meals growing up that I still make from time to time! This is an interesting way to dress it up if I wanna make it more hearty
People are being too critical. It is ok that she used different beans. This is the kind of recipe you use what you have etc. The world isn't gonna end. I would serve it over rice.
It’s not criticism. It’s pointing out something that she may be unaware of. She may have misheard the recipe, or she doesn’t know there’s such a thing as chili beans.
Brooks Chili Beans are the best chili beans known to man.. Brooks are way better than Bush.. If you are not using Brooks Chili Beans in your chili, then your chili is not as good as it could be..
OMG this is what I planned for dinner tomorrow! I use hot dogs instead of keilbasa and I use canned potatoes, I know sounds gross but these potatoes heat up fast, I am lazy after working all day. Brown bread is ready to go as well!
A solid variation I learned for this is to just cut the onions in half, leave the onion paper on it, drizzle olive oil on a good sheet pan or a foil lined sheet pan, and roast two onion halves and caramelize them the day before, also put on a few garlic cloves with the skin on the pan as well. Day you make beans take the cooled onion and garlic, remove the papery skins and chop up the onion and squeeze out the garlic into the end of the cooking of the beans with the sausage and green pepper. It adds a nice roast smokiness to the pot.
I'd eat that. Love your channel. The little nubs on the inside of the lid are so you can flip it over and pile hot coals on top without them falling off, which makes it an oven with heat from below and above. The tricky part is getting the screaming hot lid off without ashes falling in the food. And yea, I don't care what Texans say, beans are just fine in a proper chili.
in greece we have something similar in spetsofai (no beans/no potato) : olive oil, garlic, peppers many colors, hot horn peppers, sausage, black pepper and bukovo(hot pepper flakes), tomato and/or tomato paste and you eat it with bread and feta on the side instead of putting potato in the food itself. though theres many variations from region to region it is always something like this. you can even get away with using regular hot dogs/frankfurts and just adding the heat through the spices or the very hot peppers.
This is so crazy to me that you're uploading this now cause yesterday morning I cooked almost the exact same dish and I say it's crazy because I completely made it up based on the only ingredients I had at home - a few cans of baked beans, peppers and onions, but instead of sausage I used salami. I'm not from the US so I haven't heard of cowboy skillet. I also seasoned with tonnes of paprika and mixed herbs, they contribute a great flavour.
I do brown beans and red kidney beans, add corn, ground beef, and a nice pork sausage. Not the beans you used unfortunately. But try mine and you’ll love it! Add some cornbread or grilled brioche and it’ll enhance the recipe a lot
Hi Emmy A bit of History and Language analysis. Chile Con Carne literally means chili (peppers) with meat. There are several dishes in Mexico which have a variety of dried chilies and meat. Besides onion and garlic and tomato or tomatillo they rarely have any other vegetables. People probably added beans because it stretched the meat budget AND it tastes good. Personally if I'm going to make a savory bean dish it would have zero sugar, sofrito (mirepoix) and a variety of port meats. au natural, sausages, ham, tomato and chilies to taste (a variety). Jacques Mexico retired
Beans or no beans in the chili...that is the great debate! If it is chili for hotdogs, no beans. (I’m southern & was raised that way) 😂 But regular chili, add all the beans you want!! 👏❤️
It's a cowboy skillet on a budget but it's got a lot of "real food" in it like beans so it's a better choice for dinner. I am on an Ezekiel Bread kick which definitely isn't for budgets but I love the stuff and it's improving my health. I have a bread machine. If you ever want to try to make Ezekiel Bread in a bread machine I would love to see a video about it!
Beanie weenies. Fry 1 pack of bacon, remove bacon and crush. Add pack of hot dogs cut around 1/4" fry in bacon grease remove and add 1 chopped onion, caramelize. Put everything back, add 1 large can of Bushes original backed beans. Cover and simmer
When I saw the beans, I wondered if you were in New England! Grew up eating B&M brown bread in a can, heated up, buttered, with beans and cut up hotdogs!
I grew up eating something very similar at least once a week and I return to it now even when I don't need to, just for nostalgia. I love adding diced mushrooms-- brown them first like you do the sausage so you concentrate their umami flavor. You definitely can stretch it further by putting it over a carb and that can add interesting texture too. Personally my favorite is always cornbread. I like rice too, but the flavor combined with cornbread tricks my brain into thinking we're actually having barbecue, which would be WAY more expensive than a bowl of this, haha
Looks yum! I wonder if it's a regional thing that you've used chili with beans where in my neck of the woods, chili beans are red beans in a spicy sauce. I think either sounds delicious.
you gotta make hot dog stew its 1 or 2 packs of hot dogs chopped and fried in your pot then chopped some potatoes and carrots you can add onions or beans or whatever you want really then add that to pot and add a jar or 2 (to cover everything) of tomato sauce and then cook til the veggies are soft and serve its sooooooooooo good
American cowboys sustained themselves with beans and coffee. Easy to transport & cheap, full of protein for energy, and sizable portions to share, the beans could simmer all day while they worked.
It is an interesting recipe... sort of bachelor cooking, like something I used to make when single, getting home from work tired and late. So, canned beans, an onion, a small can of salsa, a chipotle pepper (hot and smokey) out of a small can (HERDEZ makes them, and the salsa). Grated cheese on top was good, when I had it. I would skip the potato. Rice as an accompaniment. I had a super cheap rice cooker. So, a sort of rice and beans.
Good recipe from Dean! At first I was thinking "yuck" but now I'm thinking "yum!" Also, ground beef chili without beans is for hotdogs, and real beef chili with beans has chunks of beef, not ground beef. And that's how it is in my world!

You obviously didn't see some of the comments. I stick by what I stated.
I am so glad you mentioned bread in the can, one of my favorite things from my childhood.
I'm envisioning Dean as Curly from City Slicker's reciting this recipe.🤠
Bush's makes chil beans....whch has tomato paste, garlic, onion powder and other spices.
Was gonna suggest this as well.
Brooks Chili Beans are the best chili beans known to man.. Brooks are way better than Bush.. If you are not using Brooks Chili Beans in your chili, then your chili is not as good as it could be..
My father always brought me the brown bread from the mess hall or his MREs. I loved them. My brothers got cookies which I do not like.😊
OMG this is what I planned for dinner tomorrow!
Oh man, that looks so good! I'm gonna have to give this recipe a try one day!!
We call Ranch Style Beans chili beans.
THE go to.
Exactly!
What exactly are ranch style beans?
Ranch style beans are the best beans on earth!!!!!
@lovelyfox9689 Ranch Style Beans is the brand name. Pinto beans with tomato puree, garlic and other slices. You can also get them with jalapeños.
Going to veganize this with smoked tofu. My budget meal is potatoes and beans with mushroom onion sauce
Thanks for sharing. Looks delicious. Will be trying it
Definitely going to try this one.
We ate a "hobo stew" like this all the time growing up. And its really just great comfort food.
I've never made cowboy beans with potatoes. I'm going to give it a try. Thanks!
i gotta try this, it looks so good 😋
I make a similar meal, actually a few gallons at a time with dried pinto beans and hot dogs. Tweaked Kent Rollins frijoles charros recipe
Would love to see more budget friendly meals! Love this idea 💡
in greece we have something similar in spetsofai (no beans/no potato) : olive oil, garlic, peppers many colors, hot horn peppers, sausage, black pepper and bukovo(hot pepper flakes), tomato and/or tomato paste and you eat it with bread and feta on the side instead of putting potato in the food itself. though theres many variations from region to region it is always something like this. you can even get away with using regular hot dogs/frankfurts and just adding the heat through the spices or the very hot peppers.
This over rice would be amazing 😮
I do brown beans and red kidney beans, add corn, ground beef, and a nice pork sausage. Not the beans you used unfortunately. But try mine and you’ll love it! Add some cornbread or grilled brioche and it’ll enhance the recipe a lot
What’s great idea. I can see this being served in November. It is now October. I could serve it with some toast or a buttery roll.
emmy i love your content sm! please never stop being you! much love from the U.S. 🤟
Jacques Mexico retired
for economy look for cheap cold cut ends and sales on pork and use dried beans not canned. they're dirt cheap.
I would probably put red, orange or yellow pepper instead of green peppers. I do not like the sharp unripe flavor of green peppers.
My husband can't eat green peppers, it hurts his stomach. I use red, orange or yellow all the time.
I make my own Boston Brown Bread in a coffee can
Beans or no beans in the chili...that is the great debate! If it is chili for hotdogs, no beans. (I’m southern & was raised that way) 😂 But regular chili, add all the beans you want!! 👏❤️
You should try albondigas soup from Mexico. It’s a meatball soup and it’s awesome for cold weather cooking
I am definitely veganizing and trying this, it looks and sounds delicious! I'm so happy soup and stew season is here. 🍂🍁🦊
This looks like it will be a weeknight dinner for me this week, thank you!
Making this tomorrow 👌🏼
What a charming video! Dean even sounds like a cowboy! 🥰
RIGHT?? Makes so much sense, lol. Lovely!
Most brands of sausage, I can't eat. I have made a thing very like that with the only meat being very little bacon. It worked well.
Very similar to what we call down here in south Louisiana “poor man’s stew.” No beans but eat it over rice.
you gotta make hot dog stew its 1 or 2 packs of hot dogs chopped and fried in your pot then chopped some potatoes and carrots you can add onions or beans or whatever you want really then add that to pot and add a jar or 2 (to cover everything) of tomato sauce and then cook til the veggies are soft and serve its sooooooooooo good
I think my mom adds a little oil to the hot dogs when she frys them up
I was thinking the same thing. There are chili beans.(Seasoned beans) Or chili with beans. You had the second. ❤
American cowboys sustained themselves with beans and coffee. Easy to transport & cheap, full of protein for energy, and sizable portions to share, the beans could simmer all day while they worked.
Just like in Brokeback Mountain.
You should try growing potatoes. They are very easy, and. just a useful as onions.
You should've made some corn bread, Emmy! Perfect accompaniment... and a beer! 🍺
Good recipe from Dean! At first I was thinking "yuck" but now I'm thinking "yum!" Also, ground beef chili without beans is for hotdogs, and real beef chili with beans has chunks of beef, not ground beef. And that's how it is in my world!
I love cans and kielbasa stuff, reminds me of my papaw.
Same!
“Beans the magical fruit!” :P
I want to make this.. I m a huge fan of baked beans and that sausage.
Beans the magical fruit!
😂🤣
good for your heart
The more you eat….the more you toot.😂
