      I disagree that it is useful to encourage dog owners to feed a species inappropriate food. Fact, chia seeds were never a part of the ancestral diet of wolves or any of their descendants on the evolutionary tree. Canids lack the biochemical pathways to convert short chain omega 3 plant fatty acids to the essential long chain omega 3s called DHA and EPA. I very much disagree with DNM promoting trendy, plant substances for dogs like chia seeds and turmeric.

    My pup is a foodie. He watches me make his meals. He sometimes wants to help. We use the Chia powder in his food and it melts right in.

      It's better to sprinkle them on top of the food right before serving, or you can soak them and then put them on top of the already cooked food before serving!

    I disagree that chia seeds should be fed to dogs. I think it very likely that it promotes the wrong kind of bacteria in the colon that is not species specific to a dog. Wild dogs have never picked and eaten chia seeds. Encouraging people to feed chia seed misleads them into thinking they are providng long chain fatty acids which are essential to carnivores that have evolved to eat at the top of the food chain. But, the reality is that dogs lack the biochemical pathways needed to form long chain omega 3 fatty acids from the short chain, plant omega 3s. And, it is the long chain ones that are needed. So, the chemistry lesson in this video is a moot point but will just confuse people and the dogs will suffer. Singing the praises of chia seeds also will probably encourage people who want to make their dogs vegan and that is tragic. Lastly, if people feed chia without proper hydration and in too large an amount for their individual dog, they will cause GI distress and possibly bloat. The best theory for the major cause of bloat in dogs is feeding them fermentable, species inappropriate fodder. This is a really bad idea. Additionally, although DNM discourages feeding seed foods high in lectins, like peanuts, what about the lectins in chia?

    Are dogs able to digest the seeds as they are? No need to put them in a blender?

    I have read that the sugar in bananas can cause ear infection? Could this be true? And since they are good for dogs how much/often should they be offered?

    • @DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM
      @DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM  Рік тому

      The sugars could be aggravating any yeast that is in the ears causing an infection, so it may be best to avoid bananas while you are treating the ears! You can offer half of a regular sized banana to medium and large dogs and 2-3 thin slices to small dogs.

      @@kenlu4786 The feeding of flax seeds and chia seeds to pet dogs is not just a silly trend but a harmful trend in my opinion. No ancestor of dogs in the evolutionary tree ever sought out and ate seeds. The fibers of these seeds are completely species inappropriate and should not be in the GI tract skewing the flora in a strange direction. Dana Scott should rethink the logic of recommending species inappropriate fodder in DNM.
