I worked at a vet clinic and the #1 thing the vet recommended when someone called with a dog with digestive issues was a 24hr Fast. No food, but access to water. Reintroduce food to them with skinned boiled unseasoned chicken and white rice (not instant rice). But this can vary dog to dog depending on what works for them-just keep it bland. It worked 90% of the time. Why? Because a dog’s digestive system needs a “hard reset” in order for digestive issues to end. A fast gives it a chance to do this. Also, if the dog is younger than 12months, it may only be able to do a 12hr fast. Call your vets office before starting the fast and they will help you with the specifics over the phone and can tell you if the dog should be seen on an emergency level or not. Also, giving your dog plain Greek yogurt weekly gives it probiotics to maintain a healthy digestive system.
This was the best advice - thank you. 3 days of non-stop diarrhoea, we did a 24 hour fast only giving water from boling rice and water from boiling chicken. After that we fed him small amounts of the boiled white rice and boiled chicken and slowly increased amounts over 2 days as he had no bowel movements. Then gave him half kibble, half chicken and rice and as all is well, fully back on normal diet again with no unnecessary medicine at the vets.
@@Joseph1080p I think you better call your vet office for specifics on that. You can check with them to see if a pup that young can handle the 12hr fast and if its recommended.

I have a small dog (chihuahua/pug mix) at age 8 years, yet she is still full of vibrancy; active, walks, playing with her toys, rides bikes with me. At age 5 I changed her diet from Science diet kibbles (1/4 cp) and half of Ceasar's Patte's until I found out about the bi-product ingredients in them (which shortens the life of a dog in the long run). So I changed her food to Whole Hearted (petco's house make that of Blue Buffalo/Royal Canin Dog food) and feel much better with this food; there is no grain, good vitamins, minerals, flax seed in the can food and the dry kibbles; 1/4 cup of salmon and Pea mix blend Whole hearted and if she is asking for more later on; 1/4 cup of probiotic beef and brown rice dry kibbles. The wet food is either chicken +Salmon or Turkey and Sweet Potato blend. I notice in her stools that they are undigested grains of rice. Her bowels are normally good, but today (06/03/22) she had a bit of diarrhea. Any suggestions on food change or additions? About a month ago since she is getting older now, I have been making home made dog food; Steamed broccoli, carrots, cauliflower and steamed brown rice which is finely chopped and then a small portion mixed in with her wet food.
I have an 8yr old chihuahua/pug mix as well! She has arthritis that prevents her from taking long hikes with me anymore, but she’s still as feisty & loving as ever. Last night, she started having bad diarrhea after I gave her a raw bone from a local farmer’s market. I feed her fresh veggies along with her dry dog food & have given her pumpkin in the past. I noticed the undigested rice years ago when she got sick & I fed it to her after a fast. Not to be too graphic, but the rice looked like undigested corn can in humans, which is why I don’t eat corn anymore. I haven’t tried brown rice, but never fed her white rice again. The pumpkin is definitely a better option! God bless you & your chug ❤ 🐕
Rice causes diarrhea for my dobie and gas, which makes me think it might also give him a tummy ache. He's also allergic to chicken and pork. Or has an intolerance to them. Both chicken and pork will give him awful diarrhea and hours of the stinkiest gas, which is a bummer because chicken and pork are usually the most affordable meats. I make homemade food and barley is the grain he gets the most of and I'll give him a little potato, sweet potato and/or yam. Half a green banana (has lower sugar) helps a bit if he has diarrhea. I do mix in pumpkin sometimes too, but he won't eat his food if it has enough pumpkin for him to taste it. He also gets a little hemp hearts and flax meal everyday. As for meat, I rotate beef, turkey, eggs, salmon, and he can handle chicken livers, but not muscle meat which I find interesting. That's all his dinner. He gets sardines in water as a morning "shnackie" and absolutely loves them! And he sometimes gets blueberries and yogurt and any other snacks that I find that are good for him. His previous owners only fed him dry kibble and it was so cute to see his surprise and excitement when I adopted him and switched him from dry kibble to a homemade diet with real food. Anyway, he does have a layer of mucous in his poo, so I'm trying to figure out if it's a normal amount or not and if I need to adjust something.
@ukfhjmvhj i had my dog fasting for 2-3 days. Gave them water only , mean while 2-3 times I gave them Tomlyn Nutri-Cal Puppy Dietary Supplement I got at petsmart Within one week dogs were fine
Pumpkin helps with diarrhea, but in my dogs case it also gives him acid reflux. Causing him to throw up. I had to stop giving it to him. This dog seems allergic to just about everything.
What works really fast for my dogs is...I bite the tops off of my chicken leg bones. I just give them 3 or 4 pieces without the bone part that can splinter. Works like a charm. They gobble it up. After I cook chicken for myself I save the tops and freeze them.
I give my GSD chicken feet - frozen. Someone once told me never to feed raw "ground meat." Cooked, ok. I will give raw beef, sardines, mackerel ( well-rinsed). The dry food looks fantastic. And I really appreciate the Slippery Em. I knew nothing about it.
Hi Rachel! Love the videos! How long should I feed the pumpkin and proteins until I should be introducing fresh food again? My dog’s stool has been looking so good lately. Life Savior!
I love you veterinary lady! When you talk about food for dogs it's the same principles I try to follow for my own food. Except for raw chicken, fine for my dog, not so much for me. 😁
I’m no expert, but the vet I worked for recommended providing the bland food on a touch and go basis based on the rate they are able to digest it. Once the stools harden a bit, start mixing in a bit of it’s normal food with the bland stuff and make a gradual transition back to its normal diet. He would usually recommend doing it for about two days after the fast ends.
If I decided to used the Dr. Harvey’s Taw Vibrance along with the meat of choice… would the total weight of the meal need to equal 2-2.5% OR would it be the 2-2.5% raw meat AND some of the Dr. H’s added in (making the total weight surpass the 2.5%?) - I hope this made sense.
Ty for this video. my dog is 120 pound bloodhound mix refuses to eat pumpkin in any form has had diarrhea now for four days which is very unusual for her. I did the boiled ground turkey hasn’t worked yet so I’m gonna try fasting her today. Do you have any other suggestions? they have banned raw goat milk at the pet store in my state I live in Massachusetts i state. I just found out however, I can go directly to the farm. I will do that today.
Hi by my dogs the chicken breast it says the same thing as yours that you buy and I get it from Sobeys so would that be OK to give the raw chicken from there to my dogs?
Really want to try pumpkin at some point, but can I find it over here in the UK? No 🤦🏻♀️ I don’t know if it’s a seasonal thing but I cannot find it in any supermarkets.
Sainsburys are the only place I have found it in the uk. Can’t remember if it was in the baking section or the imported food section but they definitely have it
Funnily enough I'm t was my dog who raught me not to feed her rice while shes recovering from bloating for eating too much oil. She ate that pumpkin up. It soften her stool bit she sure had relief
Thank you for this video! Would this be useful for puppies as well? I have a 3 month old and he’s had diarrhea the last 48 hours. We went to the vet Monday and that’s when all the symptoms started.
I am trying this too, my three month old only has been with me for 4 days and he started with bloody stool about 24 hrs ago and the vet told me to switch him to the chicken and rice diet for a couple days.
What if they have possible Colitis??? I think my dog has it, for 5 days his poo has been mushy, a little blood sometimes, mucas in it. He isn't lethargic, he's crazy still lol I did switch his food for my son's dog food when i ran out then switched again when i got back home. Idk what to do. I am still giving him dog food with probiotic capsule and paste.
Hi Rachel! Have you ever dealt with giardia in any of your dogs? I’m struggling trying to rid my new puppy of this. The meds prescribed by her vet have been unsuccessful so far and I’m worried that supplements may be making matters worse. Any advice?
We are in the same situation. We are going on 2 months. She is no longer testing positive for giardia, but Her stool will get better and then it goes right back to diarrhea 😕
My pom Kooky had Giardia when He was about 7 or 8 months old ... I was told he has after stool test ... He did not have any symptoms ....He tested negative later so I guess his own immune system killed the parasite ...
@@brs8883 my puppy finally had two consecutive negative tests after a month and a half but was still having loose stools…sometimes bloody (sorry-tmi). But we were also told to keep her isolated from my kids since one is a toddler and could be seriously affected if infected with this. I thought the tests were just inaccurate. But after the last test (antigen) I let her come out to be with the rest of the family all day and found that the loose stools went away pretty quickly. Poor thing was stressed from not being loved on all of the time. I had been relying on vet advice because I’m a first time dog owner, but soon realized that all they wanted to do was repeatedly prescribe damaging meds and do crazy expensive testing on her. On the advice of a friend, I tried Propectalin to help her get her intestinal issues back in order, allowed her out of the playpen full time, then we switched to a fresh food. She’s been incredible ever since. It was a horrible experience, but it’s over. Good news is now I’m pretty much a giardia expert with all of the peer reviewed articles I’ve read. 😉
@@amykiener8460 Glad your puppy is doing better! Since you’ve read so many articles on that nasty parasite, did you learn about diatomaceous earth and whether that can help prevent or kill parasites when given to dogs? I’ve read mixed reviews on DE for people & their pets, but find that white powdery substance to be such a blessing for so many things 🙏
Ive read a lot about pumpkin helping with constipation. I give it to my dog when he is struggling. How does it work giving it do a dog who is the opposite and already having loose stools? Would it not make it worse if it helps with constipation?
Pumpkin is actually quite effective for firming up a dog’s stool because it contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber absorbs excess water in the digestive system, which can help to firm up loose stools. On the other hand, it also helps regulate bowel movements, preventing constipation. That’s why it’s a great remedy for both diarrhea and constipation, depending on the dosage.
Good info but most of us have NO access to goat milk or pumpkin of any kind, not even non organic. organic turkey is not available anywhere. Thanks anyhow, all this looks great.
U said stay clear of chicken wings if youre dog is on kibble why is that? Is there raw things that cant be added to their diet if they arent eating a fully raw diet?
Can someone help my I went to the vet and the did a X-ray and vet said my dog had extreme case of constipation and the X-ray looked bad .. anyways he gave me what I needed to help her but if that doesn’t work surgery might have to be done she still hasn’t pooped after the vet visit which is the 2nd day he’ll me I’m so worried what do I do

Is this the same for cats, because my cat already has a sensitive stomach
Hi by my dogs the chicken breast it says the same thing as yours that you buy and I get it from Sobeys so would that be OK to give the raw chicken from there to my dogs?
Hi Rachel, what about constipation?!
How much pumpkin would you recommend I give my 50 pound golden doodle for diarrhea?
Really want to try pumpkin at some point, but can I find it over here in the UK? No 🤦🏻♀️ I don’t know if it’s a seasonal thing but I cannot find it in any supermarkets.
You can always buy a whole pumpkin and dissect it yourself. It's more work but you get more for your money!
Sainsburys are the only place I have found it in the uk. Can’t remember if it was in the baking section or the imported food section but they definitely have it
Pumpkin 🎃 works!!! ❤
Funnily enough I'm t was my dog who raught me not to feed her rice while shes recovering from bloating for eating too much oil. She ate that pumpkin up. It soften her stool bit she sure had relief
I was literally searching the word diarrhea on you channel yesterday! Haha I am so glad you posted this video.
Is it ok to fast an 11 week puppy?
I grilled chkn breast for my pup.... would that help?
Thank you for this video! Would this be useful for puppies as well? I have a 3 month old and he’s had diarrhea the last 48 hours. We went to the vet Monday and that’s when all the symptoms started.
I'm gonna try this...mines 4 months. He's in pretty bad shape:(
I am trying this too, my three month old only has been with me for 4 days and he started with bloody stool about 24 hrs ago and the vet told me to switch him to the chicken and rice diet for a couple days.
@@yesicamurcia Is he ok now ?

I did switch his food for my son's dog food when i ran out then switched again when i got back home.
Go back to Ur vet, so she can prescribe a different med.
Any advice for giardia?
Discount code for native didn’t work 😕
They also recommend to give them pumpkin for constipation, so I guess it’s up to whoever
Thank you. My dogs turns its nose up at plain rice.
Good info but most of us have NO access to goat milk or pumpkin of any kind, not even non organic. organic turkey is not available anywhere. Thanks anyhow, all this looks great.
Do you have to feed him 1.5 pound per day?
U said stay clear of chicken wings if youre dog is on kibble why is that? Is there raw things that cant be added to their diet if they arent eating a fully raw diet?
Do you cook the meat?
