@@AndrewRooneyDrumsThis all happened because Jimmy is a self-taught drummer, and you realize it when he holds the drumsticks and the way he hits them is quite different from the usual drummers. He played the drums since he was a toddler and had his own drummer at the age of 12 , and when he was a teenager he joined a percussion group. from high school to university, where he and his group played music from used bottles, used buckets, used drums, etc., and that's where the unique drum beats he created when recording or while performing.
It really makes me sad that there is so little footage of the Rev playing, he was an inspiration for alot of drummers my age growing up including myself. RIP Jimmy 🙏🏻

Jimmy was my all-time favorite drummer since around 2003 (when Waking the Fallen came out) and he remains one of my favorites to this day, almost 14 years after his tragic passing. He was just so creative, fast, and musically talented. He was also a very skilled vocalist and pianist and indeed wrote many full songs for A7X.
The reason I continue to be a better drummer. He was truly ahead of his time. Talented in more ways than drumming and just an immeasurably wonderous personality. I'd suggest the beast and the harlot or tension. Hail to the Rev

One interesting fact about The Rev that not many people know, is that the entirety of the drum tracks from A7X's first album; "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet" was all one take. I mean that as in each song was a single take, but he did that for bragging rights, so as the album goes on you can hear how it slowly gets sloppier and sloppier. Either way, The Rev is the whole reason I picked up the drums and I've been playing like him and inspired by him for years. I miss him so much. foREVer
29 years old, this man and bat country sparked the next 15 years of my music inspiration and guided me to metal and drums. My dad used to blast bat country and beast and the harlot on the sterio system when he watched headbangers ball and all that back in the day when the music channels were music channels. I still listen to the original few a7x albums to this day.
I caught one of the rev’s drumsticks. Or rather it landed between my eye and my glasses. Still got it, same ones he used throughout the city of evil tour.

Andrew, so glad you got to the Rev and avenged sevenfold. There's a lot of talent in this band and they are one of my favorites. It wasn't an accident that the Wikipedia article has the words "critical acclaim", as it is a song title in their catalog. They have quite a bit of diversity in their music from ballads to hard rock. Fingers crossed, I hope you decide to dig into them, and how they've grown musically as a band, as well as their new drummer, who deserves mention for his contribution and technical playing. R.I.P. foREVer Jimmy!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I imagine when you write and compose and even produce a majority of your own music, such as this band does, that will happen. Jimmy finished all the demos before he died. Portnoy just played Jimmys parts in the studio and toured with them after. 99% of the drum parts on Nightmare were written by Jimmy.
My old Band After Autumn were good friends with Jimmy and Avenged bc our sound guy was Jimmy's Uncle it was such a bad blow when he passed away we still miss him dearly. RIP my friend
He was certainly one of my biggest inspirations. They were one of my favorite bands through college, due in no small part to his contributions. I remember reading that this was his style. Show up and track the song ONE TIME and one take and there's your song.
The Rev really enjoyed recording the whole album in one seat (one take if possible). He actually done it in their first album and it really shows in the end of that album, you can hear that he's really tired XD
This man alone got me to pick up drumming. But there’s been no shortage of influences from many others. But I love jimmy and always will because of how he changed my life. Also probably the way he holds the drum sticks that way is because of how tall he was, 6’4
check out The Rev's drum performance on their song Second Heartbeat (Live 2003 Warped Tour). his drum sound, the snare and technique is absolutely mindblowing. he played on a small drum kit before they went famous. thumbs up if you want Andrew to react to it. i highly recommend it
The Rev was such a musical genius! He was the heart of A7X.. His technique was so perfect.. Made it look so easy.. There's a lot of A7X songs he wrote about his disease. Had the same thing as Joey Jordison.. Some say he took his own life and went out on his own terms, as described in the song "Bromton Cocktail"..
@@AndrewRooneyDrums check out little peice of heaven as well.. The studio video on UA-cam will show ya exactly how talented he really was.. Glad ya found him!
This is only 7 years into playing on records and only 14 years since he started...he didnt record an album till he was 19 and hes only 26 here! And his work at 19 was insanely good too(best member on that 1st a7x album tbh)
If you are interested in more from Rev (rip), Afterlife is (imo) the best of not just him but A7x in general. Definitely worth a listen. Love the content, keep it up ❤
One of the best drummers of our time, this was also a one take recording for him. Jimmy was truly awesome, the double ride with the bass drums is so unique.
I could be wrong, but I dont think this is the actual take used on the album recording. He pauses at 3:42 and kinda smirks after. There are a few other beats that are a bit different (not much though) It may have been the demo to get the structure of the song down? Either way, the Rev was an absolute monster
I hope you actually listen to the final product from this recording session. Almost Easy a great song, and it was written almost in its entirety by Jimmy. Synister Gates hated it at first and almost refused to play it, and this ended up being one of their most popular songs ever.
Andrew, this along with other avenged sevenfold recordings were often done in one take or that's what the folklore says. There isn't too much quality recordings of playthroughs that I've seen over the years with the rev, but in terms of avenged sevenfold, us deathbats go by albums rather than individual songs. So in my humble opinion, I would have to say their self titled or city of evil are their best works. Thanks for getting to my inspiration for music!
A fun-fact about Rev is that he was known as the "one-take man". As far as I know, he recorded all albums in one take. That's right, EVERY song. That's probably why he remains so calm throughout this recording. He wants to make sure that he gets it perfectly in the first take!
@@gusbate1118 I’m in the same boat. As there are good songs on the later albums, it just doesn’t click with me as much. I may have enjoyed it more if Portnoy would have remained a permanent member of the band
There’s an interview with Shadows where he talks about Rev doing StST in one take, and they recorded the album in order. According to him, you can hear some of his mistakes in the later songs, which he refused to correct, because he was determined to be a 1 take guy.
He has quite the body of work for such a short life. There’s a song called “Bat Country” that you MUST check out, and hopefully review. The drumming BLEW MY MIND when I first heard it. Love the channel, new subscriber from Virginia USA
I love the Rev drumming up a storm, his backup vocals were were killer. A terrible shame he passed way to young, glad you found the Rev and gave him so love. Please give him a deeper look, you will love what you see. Check out the Avenged Sevenfold live at the LBC ) Long Beach Coliseum in callifornia a one hour twenty minute live concert which was professionally filmed for DVD release, you will see and hear the Rev at his wild best. Good review, thanks.
That's how I hold my right stick as well, not on purpose, I've always considered it a flaw in my stick holding and try to correct it when I notice myself doing it. It does make me feel better to see a celebrated drummer like the Rev holding his stick like I do lol
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I didn't take it as a critique although I would've understood if you did ha. Thanks for the reply and all the videos! I've been watching for a while but just subscribed!
The rev was the reason I wanted to learn to play. People say a lot of negative stuff about A7X but the rev is always the exclusion. The technic that he used and his very creative writing pits him up there with some of the best ever
The Rev is my all time favorite musician. Arguably the greatest drummer alive before he died and depending on where you look he has made several lists as one of the top ten drummers of all time. I'd put him at number one personally (favoritism partially). The Rev was the best. And a massive inspiration for me to get into being a musician.
The part where he played 2 Rides where you said "Singles or paraddidles". single pattern and both the ride and double bass are played at the same time :D If you want a follow up video of The REV you can watch his live video of "Bat Country" drum cam. He goes wilder on that one.
As someone who plays the harder rock stuff, I usually have my hands at the bottom of the stick to really dig into the drums…. My grip is different though. Also, the ride is probably the Zildjian Z mega bell (since this is like 2006)
If no one’s said yet and ya didn’t know, Rev’s idol was Mike Portnoy and those quick double ride cymbal parts he took inspiration from Mike on that for this song. Also, these boys were given free range on this album and were all in their like mid 20’s and what we got was a masterpiece of an album. You should really check out the song A Little Piece of Heaven. The brain child of the Rev himself and he was inebriated a lot of the time while recording it 😅
Fun fact for you he wrote composed and put together the instruments for pretty much all of their music including the nightmare album was released after he died. That's where the line of final song a last request in the song So far away comes from. Also their straps say foREVer on them.
Studio had a lot of studio experience by the time this video was recorder, he was making their 4th studio album. So we was pretty experienced. Also, while died at the age of 28, he had been practicing since he was a kid, so by the time he died he had almost 2 decades of experience.
If I remember correctly, he called that lick the “double octopus” where he plays double bass and cymbals in sync. I also believe that was the one and only take he did in studio. He was a great drummer and the reason I started drumming when I was young. Would be awesome to see some more avenged sevenfold even with Portnoy or Brooks Wackermen. There’s no replacement for the Rev but they have added to the legacy!
Also so incredible to see all the comments of people he has also inspired. Not enough people know of him and what he has done for metal drummers everywhere.
This is not the take from the album. He missed the fill at the end of the first verse, but he kept playing because that's how he rolled. Jimmy was a rare one-take master. He never punched in a recording. If he messed up, he would do the whole song again. Interestingly, their first album was recorded in sequence in a single take. EVERY SONG SEQUENTIALLY BACK TO BACK. Jimmy wanted it to feel like a live show where there are no redos.
I hold the sticks the same way to give it more weight and longer travel time with smaller movement. It also helped me to prevent bashing my hand on the cymbals.

This man alone got me to pick up drumming. But there’s been no shortage of influences from many others. But I love jimmy and always will because of how he changed my life. Also probably the way he holds the drum sticks that way is because of how tall he was, 6’4
Oh right. Didn't realize he was that tall Dylan!
check out The Rev's drum performance on their song Second Heartbeat (Live 2003 Warped Tour). his drum sound, the snare and technique is absolutely mindblowing. he played on a small drum kit before they went famous. thumbs up if you want Andrew to react to it. i highly recommend it
title of video I'm suggesting is Second Heartbeat - Live 2003 Warped Tour HD Remastered - A7X
Sounds good Jim :)
Best episode ever !!! Amazing The Rev ❤
Man this is tragic. Can't believe it
@@AndrewRooneyDrums check out little peice of heaven as well..
The studio video on UA-cam will show ya exactly how talented he really was..
Glad ya found him!
@@DirtyDeeds0075 Don't watch the studio version without seeing the music video first. Have to see the animated video to understand the song
Rest in Peace Jimmy the Rev ❤️
RIP
This is only 7 years into playing on records and only 14 years since he started...he didnt record an album till he was 19 and hes only 26 here! And his work at 19 was insanely good too(best member on that 1st a7x album tbh)
Can't wait to hear more Seth
So awesome to see you reacting this this legend.
If you are interested in more from Rev (rip), Afterlife is (imo) the best of not just him but A7x in general. Definitely worth a listen.
Love the content, keep it up ❤
Yes I'll be doing more for sure. And thank you!
Love that the first thing I noticed in this video was "Stick Control" on top of the practice pad lol
Just watch Beast and the Harlot drum cam from live. He was so chilled playing that...
I'll get to it Mateusz!
Synister Gates hated it at first and almost refused to play it, and this ended up being one of their most popular songs ever.
foREVer
Andrew, this along with other avenged sevenfold recordings were often done in one take or that's what the folklore says. There isn't too much quality recordings of playthroughs that I've seen over the years with the rev, but in terms of avenged sevenfold, us deathbats go by albums rather than individual songs. So in my humble opinion, I would have to say their self titled or city of evil are their best works. Thanks for getting to my inspiration for music!
You bet David. Can't wait to see more
@@AndrewRooneyDrums if you do more avenged sevenfold with ol Jimbo, Van Damme will dance. Just saying.
@@sokolpunch More on the way David!
A fun-fact about Rev is that he was known as the "one-take man". As far as I know, he recorded all albums in one take. That's right, EVERY song. That's probably why he remains so calm throughout this recording. He wants to make sure that he gets it perfectly in the first take!
I think it was only sounding the seventh trumpet he did in one take
@Ravi. He was a great drummer and great writer.
I don't really enjoy avenged after the nightmare album its not been the same.
@@eddiekalista3222 I respect it honestly
Thanks for reacting to my hero. Means alot man.
HA awesome man!
Yeah I certainly wasn't critiquing him. Worked for him!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I didn't take it as a critique although I would've understood if you did ha. Thanks for the reply and all the videos! I've been watching for a while but just subscribed!
I have so much love for old Sevenfold and The Rev. Had my Deathbat tattoo since 2006.
YES!
I love how Matt was like watch the magician work 😅
Jimmy used Sabian 22 inch Metal Rides which is why the bell was so huge!
👌
The rev was the reason I wanted to learn to play. People say a lot of negative stuff about A7X but the rev is always the exclusion. The technic that he used and his very creative writing pits him up there with some of the best ever
That's awesome Alec!
Who's saying negative stuff about the band!?
@@AndrewRooneyDrums mainly people who listen to heavier stuff. They say is “dad rock” and such. Just a very memed on band
Jimmy's double ride is so fucking cool!
Yes Kim!
Nothing wrong with having your own personal faves!
The part where he played 2 Rides where you said "Singles or paraddidles". single pattern and both the ride and double bass are played at the same time :D
If you want a follow up video of The REV you can watch his live video of "Bat Country" drum cam. He goes wilder on that one.
Yo good ears! Thank you!
And thanks for the tip :)
The song “THE BEAST AND THE HARLOT.” You won’t regret it
Thank you!
Rev drumming with sinister doing ham on a solo and shadows screaming for an hour straight is too good.
As someone who plays the harder rock stuff, I usually have my hands at the bottom of the stick to really dig into the drums…. My grip is different though.
Also, the ride is probably the Zildjian Z mega bell (since this is like 2006)
This dude recorded his first album in one take
👀🥁🙌
Morgan Rose is another amazing drummer you should checkout! He’s the drummer for Sevendust!
He's on the hit list Jeff!
Awesome info. Thanks Amanda 🙏
I can't wait to check out more Nick!
Really don't think this video does him justice in just how good he was. Just an animal in everything musical he did
I need to do more Danny! 🥁👌
The Rev was famous for recording all his drum parts in one take
Great review as always 🤘🏴
need to watch him live and see what you think. i suggest live in the LBC to see him do some major work
Yes I'll get on it!
I hold the sticks the same way to give it more weight and longer travel time with smaller movement.
It also helped me to prevent bashing my hand on the cymbals.
Ayye my request!
Yo!
