Aquiles came to my country in 2013 and did a drum clinic. For a couple of songs, he called some of the public to stand behind him and I was lucky to be selected!
I cannot describe how insanely hard this guy hits. I've seen plenty of drummers go at it. But he's just on another planet. Every single hit you could feel in your chest. Bass drum hits crushed your skull, even when going fast. And when he hit those big ass floor toms I could feel my chest compress.
He went through a pair of those thicker than 2B drum sticks every couple of songs because they exploded in the middle, and had to retune his snare every single song.
This guy is the real deal. The only one I can say really puts the _power_ in Power Metal drumming. His life story is also very inspiring. He basically had no talent for the drums. And due to sheer power of will and dedication, he managed to get good. He moves to a cabin in the woods and practices for 10 hours a day before every tour or album recording.
Truly a life inspiration for me. Please check more of his stuff!
Aquiles has played for Angra and toured with DragonForce, he has his own band called Hangar and replaced Frankie Banali (RIP) as the drummer for WASP. He was also the mentor of Sepultura's drummer Eloy Casagrande. He's one of my all-time favourite drummers, I've been playing as long as he has and was never 1/2 as good as he is, he's a true master.
Also, rumors says he is an asshole. Just saying.
Frankie Banali had been long gone before he joined WASP. He was replacing Mike Dupke, who just left walls without any kind of true explanation as to why from either side

Priester is crazy good, one of the very best power metal drummers out there today. The power, energy, and musicality of his playing is *always* on point. He can bust out some crazy technicality too when the music calls for it. You can never go wrong watching his stuff!
Any Angra album with Aquiles on drums is amazing. I recommend COLOR BLIND - HANGAR, it has some great groove ideas and orchestrations
Aquiles is a excellent drummer, such a beast playing on just gorgeous kits.
Aquiles is a monster. He combines speed and power and all that jazz.
You should check out The Shadow Hunter or Sprouts of Time (both songs from the same album as Temple of Hate) for a bit more variety in the drumming. Angra incorporate a lot of traditional Brazilian music into their sound which isn't really on display in this song but makes for some very cool contrast in those songs mentioned.
The whole band is incredibly talented, but there's a reason why Aquiles was one of the few invited to audition to be Mike Portnoy's replacement in Dream Theater.
Aquiles Priester did a sick cover of Gene Hoglan’s (Death) “Symbolic”. Anybody that can tastefully embellish the work of Gene is aces in my book.
Aquiles was a serious contender for the next Dream Theater drummer gig. In fact, I believe given a different time and evolution of DT, that Aquiles would have been selected. Props for taking a closer look at Aquiles Priester!
That was not a real audition. It was a youtube pr show. They have been friends for years before. They knew he was getting the gig before the so called try out.
I don't believe for one moment that andy has never heard of Aquiles or ever heard him perform. That's like saying you are a drummer and drum teacher and never heard of Peart . It's all bs to get the views.

Love me some Achilles, with any of his acts, Angra, Edu Falaschi's solo albums (2nd vocalist for Angra they did 3 albums with Angra and 2 studio and one live album for Edu's solo project) or Hanger.
I'd love to see you do a reaction to another track from this DVD/album called Winds of Destination. It goes as fast as Temple of Hate at times, but has more compound and mixed meter passages and a lot more intricate cymbal work, including a jaw dropping 20 second section where he does a psychotic sticking pattern bouncing between hi-hat, china, and snare at about 160bpm. My own brain checked out and gave me the metaphorical finger just from trying to chart that part out.

Someone uploaded it to UA-cam a few years back (it's since been removed) and I watched it multiple times because I couldn't believe so much of the stuff that he was doing! Fantastic video featuring one of the best power drummers around. Bar none.

So good! This was my 1st time hearing/seeing Aquiles and wow is he a hard working drummer. Well disciplined, too. I could get the sense that he could absolutely use that whole kit, if he wanted to but was playing to the song's strengths and was so on point with the orchestration.
I'm a guitarist but I did take several years of drum classes in high school - so I've got some decent chops with some sticks (or mallets). You learn some great technique when you learn how to play on steel drums and rosewood marimbas from a teacher who was a respectable jazz drummer. That was a long time ago but I still love drumming, although I never had a set to get the whole "using my feet" thing, down.

Aquiles is a freaking monster! Truly one of the greatest Metal drummers from Brazil. I just thought, you really need now to react to a german Black Metal band called, Der Weg einer Freiheit, you would be so impressed by him and his blast beats, reacting here would be amazing, but if not, just listen to his band, and there is a lot o drum playthroughts as well, the drummer is beyond impressive!

I always used Paiste cymbals, the 2000 Series which has also been used almost exclusively by Alex Van Halen, but those Colorsound 900s look sweet, I'd want them in red, Tama drums in white...they'd match my dream car, a 1963 Corvette Stingray rear split in white with a red interior. Chip Foose did an amazing redesign drawing of one in metallic blue and silver.
Oh yeah, Aqulies has a lot of covers, he's been part of WASP since Frankie Banali died in 2019 and has a great cover of Chainsaw Charlie off WASP's The Crimson Idol which features the late, great Frankie at his very best, a must-hear for any drummer.
I believe the red shoes over did it. 😮

*_He is ALWAYS 100 Percent FULL Throttle... have never seen him get tired._*
This is actually a SMALLER Kit than normal. He is known worldwide for his DOUBLE Kick. First time I saw him play, I lost count how many total drums; Snares, Toms, Kicks, and lots of Cymbals. ALL color coded RED including his Shoes.
His ability to completely synchronize all 4 limbs is stunning. His ability to play all 4 limbs independent of the others is equally amazing. It is hard to even pick words to describe his performances, each one totally unique. I played during the 80's in Seattle. On my best days I was 10 percent of his worst day. I wonder if he is even human, so perfect and precise.

WHOA!! That drum presentation was nucking Futz!! It is enough to get tired looking @ Aquiles play! So many Great drummers out there! Not sure if you recall but, there was this band called Love. I heard it on a quadraphonic stereo that someone purchased @ a garage sale. He played me this band called. Albert Lee's Love and there was this wyld drum solo. Not sure if the song is called"She comes in coulours" drum solo also with a water plate gong or was that something else. Sounded like someone playing a saw. lolz. Scott Rockenfield, Nicko McBrain, Tommy Aldridge and Terry Bozzio playing his who knows how many drums he has now, let alone set up!

So many orchestration ideas... Andy, Angra was the first of the great neoclassical shred power metal bands of the 90's, they have more orchestration ideas in any single song than any pop record since Queen.
