A MINIMALIST'S Houseplant Home Tour - Ep 200

  • Though the coronavirus pandemic has set us back in filming some of our houseplant home tours, we decided to fit another one in, which is "closer to home" so to speak-the minimalist home of my cameraman and creative director of 'Plant One On Me', Sander. I think he shows that you don't have to have many plants to still be a committed plant person.

this was very refreshing! it is nice to see someone whose experience is more "relatable" than the ones shown by serious plant collectors! I love to see huge collections and marvel in the knowledge of the masters, but watching a regular guy, with a more humble number of plants, feels nice and validates us, commoners! haha

Haha, I concur. It's really nice to see plant lovers across a range. Plus it shows that it's not about how many plants you have. No need to feel the pressure of "competition"...you can just love plants and have 1, 2, 3, 4...

    Some amusing plant tips......
    Q - “Is this a hanging plant? “
    A - Yes, it’s a hanging plant, it’s hanging.”
Q - How can I get light on top of my plants?
A - Tip the pot on it’s side towards the light.
Plant pot tipping.....kinda like cow tipping!?
    Saunder is so chill.

Helping him repot his ficus, and also assessing some of his plants and giving advice made me think of a great idea for the future! Whenever it’s safe to go in people’s homes again, you should do a series where you go to the homes of people who are having trouble with their houseplants and see their plants, assess, diagnose, and help them with any troubleshooting (I.e. pest management, repotting, propagating, watering, placement of plants in home based on light).

Really enjoy when Sander makes an appearance! You guys make a great team. And really appreciated the emphasis on minimalism. Too often, people seem to get into plants because it’s the trend. Which isn’t bad in and of itself because it’s awesome when people discover houseplants as a new hobby! But sometimes it can inadvertently become a new outlet for our already consumerist culture. So it’s meaningful to hear that message here that you can find fulfillment in only a few plants. And I could tell that Sander definitely does! He knew all their new growths and troubles like his babies❣️

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes  4 роки тому +4

Appreciate your take on the episode. I concur. I sense that when my home went viral in 2016, it really inadvertently fueled people's plant buying habits. What is right for me doesn't mean it's for everyone, and everyone should feel the right balance for them-and that could change over the years. I'm happy to highlight folks like Sander who just want "a few".

Very calming video. I’ll have to purge this house to get it to that point...sofa, chairs, pots and pans...etc. I’ll keep the plants and everything else can go!

This video is very satisfying, although he does not have many plants unlike me (guilty) I think it is the perfect amount. It highlights the plants and I love that he chose the right plant for his living condition. Great tour Summer!

So glad that you enjoyed it and appreciated his "minimum" plant choices.

Hey! I have a tip for the terracotta pots water plate to seal them so they don't ruin furniture. All you have to do is take the plate and give it a few coats of PVA glue. This is completely non-toxic, low cost, and easy to source glue (sometimes called school glue - as kids use it in schools) and won't hurt or affect the plant if the water sits in the saucer gets sucked up by it. This simple trick stops the saucer from leaking as it creates a waterproof barrier.
I usually only paint the glue on the inner edge of the saucer - but you could paint the outside too - it may leave a shiny surface on the outside though and then will look different from the pot sitting in it. Up to you with your aesthetic.
I sometimes water down the PVA glue very slightly (e.g. 8 parts PVA to 1 part water) so its easier to paint on, and then leave it to dry and do 1-2 more coats which helps it to soak into the terracotta
    Hope that helps!

YES !! I see minimalism and plants I click in half a second haha
    Love both !
Been struggling lately cause I love oh so love plants, but I do tend to lean and like more minimalist clean spaces, so been selling some of my plants and many other things I own to get that more minimalistic space :) and I realise the more I get rid of things the better I feel weirdly ^^

There is definitely a balance, and I find that balance shifts throughout one's life.

Yay!!! I love plants and have a good few but yeah, I'm not in the hundreds. This makes me feel like I can still be part of the plant community without taking over my home like I wish I could. Still have a family to think about lol!
