Gabs, if you're wondering how Alice ended up in the river from the rooftops, there was actually a lot of content cut from the game. One of it involving Alice murdering Pris Witless (the old lady with the pigeon) while she was hallucinating her being a monster and escaping the cops by jumping across the buildings until she falls into the river and ends up on the piers.
@@saorise28 Development time was limited so they had to scrap several concepts, most notably they removed a lot of the content for when Alice was in the real world. Fun fact about the ice level: The animals frozen in movement are part of the story of Alice in Wonderland where the animals get soaked by the ocean and decide to run around in a circle to dry off. Of course, that doesn't quite explain the reason for the arctic setting. But just some context for the animals that appear in poses suggesting motion.
it froze as she got knocked out shortly after visiting the ice stock (all the ice blocks- note that there's even a few frozen Ice Snarks in them as she's already starting to slip into Wonderland!)

for a game that is 11 years old the physics are really well, from the hair, to the shadows moving around Alice depending on where the light is coming from! Also, about the apologies in Disney movies. In Sweden there is a tradition to watch "Donald Duck" on Christmas before opening the gifts, it has clips from older Disney movies, from the "Junglebook" to "Ferdinand" and even "Santa's workshop" which has some... not so subtle hints of racism, but last year -- or 2020, I'm not sure -- they added an apology at the very end of the program

5:08 True. I think they are still a huge deal today though! ;) Bc even nowadays very little games go for realistic hair physics like they did in Alice. Dead or Alive does it, but other than that a lot of games still use either fix hair or just slightly moving hair.
I'm so happy you're enjoying this game! :D Also heads up, not sure if anyone has mentioned but the Clockwork Bomb makes a great decoy when you're swarmed with enemies :) Excited to see more!!
I can't wait see to your reaction when start to click about this game! Also, yes hair physics was a big thing when this game first came out. Also Smog and butterflies.
To be fair, Madness Returns being a linear story, with only really one protagonist with actual hair would allow the developers to devote more resources to make it look good, compared to an open world (i.e. Skyrim) full of NPCs that need individual strands of hair blowing in the wind, and floating in the water... But still, the helmet-hair of Skyrim remains a constant source of irritation to me - not least of which because they didn't even bother making sure it doesn't clip through clothing or the character's own ears (which would hypothetically be even easier to avoid, when the hair is static, like in Skyrim.)
I remember playing this alongside MGS: Peacewalker, and enjoying Kinect with Just Dance games. And oh, RE5 too. Good ol' days when I drifted away from PS bloodline!
We had one of the old VHS sing-a-long tapes with a song from Aristocrats. The Siamese cat's line was "Shang-hi, Hong Kong, Egg Foo Yung. Fortune Cookie always wrong." while playing the piano with chopsticks. Can't remember the full movie, but that's enough.
12:15, you said that Alice's jump was not suppose to happen but it actually was. I thought you figured it out last episode but a lot happened last chapter: If you shrink down Alice gets small and she starts hiccupping. While she is small, there are also hidden messages or secrets. They can point you collectibles or hidden teeth. If you were to shrink down at that timestamp, you would have seen a purple invisible platform
as a little tip, if you do a hammer combo you can then press knife to do a quick knife attack and it deals a lot of damage. Same thing with the knife, you do the full knife combo then use the horse hammer, boom, special chain attack!

Indeed, when this came out PhysX was kind of the new tech that was being developed for PC games, like some fluid simulation and destructible objects, hair and cloth physics and that sort. Later on by like 2015 it was superseded by FleX, but FleX never went mainstream and has been more experimental and in development. Anyway, the PC version of this game has the PhysX features, and cloth and hair simulation in general was still relatively a new graphical feature, but there was no games at the time as far as what I remember that had hair simulation like this game. If I remember correctly watching a live stream from American McGee, he said that they highered 1 guy in China that programmed the hair physics just himself, and did a fantastic job.

There's a mode called Hysteria you should try it (literally the coolest feature in the game)
To enter it just let them hit you until you're so low and then press the button they tell you to press in the flowers area (hp area)
Edit:
Ok she used it in the last fight to get the last part of the flower xD
gab! try pressing the hobby horse button 3 times consecutively to break defences and so you dont have to wait as much for timing. also try xxyx for combo 😘
1:25:00 Gab absolutely destroying the goop goons and crustaceans in this fight whilst taking 0.00 points of damage was so damn satisfying. Like *chef's kiss*.
@@Shadria1996 Ah that makes sense! Thanks I totally forgot about that detail!
I have gotten a 10 hour 40 minute long skipable ad labeled: "OFFICE JAZZ - Relax Concentrate JAZZ Piano For Work From The Office or Home" from advertiser "Relax Music" and I find this situation hilarious.
omg sis is a skinny legend for real, her waist is touching her spine XD
This has always been one of my favorite games. I'm so glad to see you playing it, it's truly a great experience!
"Deep In The Sea" makes a hell of a lot more sense than "Under The Sea".
They LIVE IN IT, not under it!
"Life in the sea" would have been a better song idea even🤦♀️
“I have a cannon toooo!!” Yes. Slight callback to Control
God, I love the grotesque pop-up style of this game!
One of the wonders of a person is that he flees from hearing (advice) and listens to hear (scandal).
you're going to LOVE the next chapter! Well, the chapter after the upcoming "half chapter" as I call it lol
for a game that is 11 years old the physics are really well, from the hair, to the shadows moving around Alice depending on where the light is coming from!
I never finished watching a playthrough of this game, I'm really glad you're playing it! Gonna watch it all.
This is a good looking game, I remember when it first came out, I so wanted to play it, it looked so kewl. I am not sure why i never did. I imagine Anne Joy Taylor could play Alice in a movie.
I literally just completed this last week. It's amazing! I'm so glad you're playing this. I loved the different levels. Fingers crossed the new game gets funding. I want to see the next part of Alice's story!
The moon and sun looked gorgeous in the first Tundra area. Really fantastical and like a picture book.
me this entire time: "hey that's really interesting and creative wait- alice aren't you on fIRE?!"
50:00 i was like "who TF is that?" and then I remember there is a Walrus next to him and BOOM "The Walrus and the Carpenter"
at 51:22 'coals to Newcastle' is a helluva line! newcastle is a neighbouring city to where a lot of the inspiration for the origional writing took place; Sunderland!
I’m so glad I found you. So many (mostly male gamers) started this play through but got bored and dropped it right at the point you are at in this installment. I love your commitment and loyal drive. Thank you for being uniquely you 👏🏼
5:08 True. I think they are still a huge deal today though! ;) Bc even nowadays very little games go for realistic hair physics like they did in Alice. Dead or Alive does it, but other than that a lot of games still use either fix hair or just slightly moving hair.
I'm enjoying watching you play through this so much! It's got me wanting to pick it up again!
I have just played through it again. It's such a nostalgia trip. Do it!
I am loving this playthrough!!
So happy and excited to finally see you play this. Keep up the amazing content, Gab!
In the Warhammer universe Orcs use teeth as currency so that makes me wonder, is Alice actually an orc? 🤔
Alice: "Everyone here has an excuse for doing _nothing!_ Reminds me of the _asylum..."_
Me: "Reminds _me_ of _politics."_
Good ol' days when I drifted away from PS bloodline!
leave it to sean to start about the hair physics
1:16:59 it's because it has a portrayal of a Siamese cat playing "Chopsticks" with Chopsticks on a piano while also having stereotypical "Asian" eyes.
Watching Gab play this game I remember that 3rd game got canceled by ea and I’m so sad
Nevermind you got it! 16:40
1:54:41 Game went suddenly from Tim Burton to Stephen King
The fish people are just reverse mermaids!
as a little tip, if you do a hammer combo you can then press knife to do a quick knife attack and it deals a lot of damage. Same thing with the knife, you do the full knife combo then use the horse hammer, boom, special chain attack!
Have a look at a game called Dreamfall the longest journey. I think you might like. Very weird and different with an interesting story and unique characters.
At 1:08, that moment happens a lot in this game. I think that the idea is that Alice's Wonderland is crossing over into her reality a little bit.
This game is AMAZING! I like the Cheshire Cat best!!
Because he is a cat and therefore, obligated to make no sense to anyone.
Loving this series! So fun to watch ☺️ if someone didn't already mention it, the aristocats had a Siamese cat playing the piano with chopsticks shouting something about fortune cookies, very racist!
27:30 reminds me so much of the PS1 game G-Darius!
40:54 dude reminds me of The Wise Old Crab from Battle for Volcano Island
I’m glad my intro to Evelyn is my favorite game of my childhood 🥰
Jeej been waiting for thiss!! Hey if you need a game to play you can always continue the bioshock series!
Yes I wish she’d play infinite!
@@Jackieb741 yeah i hope so too! I think she would love it
The hobby horse is my favorite weapon! Especially you upgrade it, the look of the horse changes 😀
Part 2 already?!?! Oh you made my day Gab!!! ❤❤
Gab: Language!
Gets punched few minutes later
Gab:The FUCK!?
When you got to Barrelbottom, I said that sounded like something out of Spongebob. Then you said that about the fish people. I was like YES!😂😂😂
Honestly watching you play this makes me so happy, I even started a new playthrough again
12:12 i can't be the only one screaming: SHRINK. GO TO SHINK MODE
I feel like Pepper Pig would've been a funnier name 😂
Your videos are my reward for being a good student 😆😉 I forgot how iconic her hair and dress movement is in this game! And the music 💜 I'm so happy about this series.
It's creepy how the memories foreshadow the ending and the truth and yet it's even too vague for the player to understand. Especially Dr. Bumby's memories and all that talk of purpose. I don't really understand Pris's memories tho
You and Birdy are my dearest beings from Holland. You both impressed me so much!
I've never played this game but I remember my older sister playing the first one and it gave me the creeps! So glad I get to watch your playthrough, Gab. It's amazing so far!
The horse is actually very good against the slime guys with many faces. Try it some time.
And I think you can still use the bombs, they are still useful for distracting small enemies when you're fighting big boys.
Ik you’re playing another game but I wish you could upload this every day 😅
Now we just gotta get you to play the old ('98) horror puzzle game, Sanitarium. it's been ported to iOs and android 😁
I tried that game on Android and it's a bit clunky in my opinion. I wonder if they've updated it at all since I played it to make it less clunky
@@btter710 haha yes! I got the mobile version when i found it and by God the controls for it on mobile is HORRIBLE especially when going thru the maze! The PC version was the same but easier with a mouse
