Fun fact: The novel is full of drug references, and yes, the caterpillar smokes a hookah (and it seems like he put weed in it, judging by his behavior). During the time this was written, the Victorian era, it was quite common to use heroin, cocaine and opium in for example cough medicine, so kids would early on become drug addicts!
Opium especially, since they went out of their way to make opium dens or bars around that time too. People would slum in those buildings for days with no awareness of what time or day it was.

01:32:59 this is the same dude from the beginning he always says to forget unpleasant memories. I think you're confused because he said something like "remember your wonderland go there" because it's supposed to be happy and he wants to erase bad memories for his therapy. At the beginning just after Alice went out of the office a boy entered and he said "So Charlie, you dad hang himself after killing your mum. Let's forget out those horrible memories shall we?" or something like that. That's how his therapy works apparently.
He wants to erase bad memories because he is grooming children for sexual abuse. This is strongly implied by the children being leered at by those men, and the distressed children Alice sees later on in the game. Also, the "ruin" creatures basically represent lost innocence. Alice lost her innocence when her family died and the adults in her life took advantage of her vulnerable state. I'm not sure if it's meant to imply she was sexually assaulted by her therapist, but he was certainly way too insistent on her forgetting all bad memories. Why would he be grooming her and younger children to forget the horrible experiences forced upon them? Highly suspect. Alice confronts him in the end and I believe she accuses him of brainwashing children to be used and abused for personal gain/gratification. Their close proximity to the brothel (The Mangled Mermaid) supports this theory.

I suspect those "Chinese characters" are from the well known classical literature regarding the warring states (三國演義), probably the most famous Chinese literature after Confucius & The Art of War. The devs should have had the text scrolling upwards with the natural reading direction of vertical text, it's impossible to read & appreciate when the next characters disappear with downward scrolling!!
Totally random but thanks for the random history lesson at around 1:23:00 and for talking about other languages because I’ve been trying to find out more about other languages and which ones I wanna learn, so this was an interesting point!

29:59 That comment is actually VERY correct. Most of those water pipe references back then were referring to smoking opium. It was fairly common. Cocaine, Opium, and other drugs considered harsh these day were readily available and used very commonly. Amnesia Rebirth where she uses Laudanum is an example. It’s an opium derivatives pretty sure.

2:17 The blades are facing the wrong way. When the katna and or wakazashi are faced blades to the right and the handles to the left it signifies that they are not prepared For attack because traditional japanese swordsman, or most of the japanese population rather were forced to be right handed, even if they were left handed. If the blades face left and the handles to the right, it makes it easier for someone to grab the sword and use it. I may have gotten some of that wrong. I just know that the swords are facing the wrong way. It's been a while since I brushed up on my Japanese sword etiquette.

As I’m sure some have seen from one of the recent recorded live streams by American McGee, he explains some really cool concepts that his team put together to pay respect to this chapter. The paper ants that are murdered and strung up/nailed to walls are a small nod to the massacres in China brought on by the Japanese. That’s why the land the ants are a part of is traditionally Chinese, while the samurai wasps are Japanese and are opposers to Alice as well. After loving the game since it’s release and hearing that for the first time a couple weeks ago, it blew my mind. It additionally reassured me that the creators really wanted their team’s creativity and culture to shine and not just butcher it for aesthetic. If I got any facts wrong please feel free to correct me. ☺️
I wish Tim Burton's version of Alice was more like this, cause this is much more his style, but of course since Disney got to it, an Alice in Wonderland movie needs to be more "kid friendly." >.> Even though the story is not kid friendly at all. But that's why we have vija games.
You really shouldn't be using your pepper grinder for everything. It's not nearly as strong as your other weapons, and should only be used for those times when ranged attacks are absolutely necessary.
As rude as this may sound, I do like enemies that completely negate all the other tactics you used before. It really forces the player to try out new tactics to defeat the new enemy instead of just sticking to the pepper grinder like any other boring enemy encounter.
The next chapters are going to be fire I can tell! I am very happy you like the game because well it’s one of my favorite game ever and there are only few youtubers who finished it. Not like pewdiepie, such a shame because the end is really amazing.
1:28:48 For example in English, Data. Data is, officially, a plural, yet unofficially, data is either singular or plural. The singular version is "datum," which, with that word, and it being pronounced the way it's spelled, I'm not surprised that people use "data" for singular and plural usage of the word.
I want to say Radcliffe is the attorney in charge of the Liddel estate when it burned down. Maybe not attorney, maybe a lawyer? When Alice first approached him and rang his door, I thought she was back at the mental ward but he said that she abandoned it at the ward and his statement makes it seem like he was focused on the house itself and not the family. The way he described it made it seem like he is a detective but I do not think that is it.
His memory symbols something long and thin. I know there is a needle, a mirror, glasses, a house, his memory, and a perfume bottle. The needle is for the doctor, the house is for her family, the perfume bottle is for the body lady who is blackmailing her, the glasses is for her therapist, and the mirror is for Alice's aunt. I think Radcliffe's memory item is suppose to be a pen.
Hmm, never noticed it before now...but I think the smaller projectiles which the Insidious Ruin hurls at you are actually the pepper corns from you...he blocks them and sends them back. I've almost always been using the Teapot Cannon against those buggers =P

If you think about it, all characters who collect memories for what Alice to forget certain aspects of her life.
Spicy Horse studio is actually based in China I believe and American McGee's wife is Chinese(their son "Lucky" is the cutest little boy ever 🤣)
The hobby horse is one of the strongest weapons so it can break most enemy’s defenses! I used it a lot what I played it! It was my favorite weapon tbh!
"Tiddies, my reward!" that had me cackling
29:59 That comment is actually VERY correct. Most of those water pipe references back then were referring to smoking opium. It was fairly common. Cocaine, Opium, and other drugs considered harsh these day were readily available and used very commonly. Amnesia Rebirth where she uses Laudanum is an example. It’s an opium derivatives pretty sure.
5:18 One of my fave moments of the game!
14:02 LMFAO
30:21 One of my fave dresses
"Sir, these buns weren't made for toasting!" I almost spit out my coffee.
I love the bit with the paper ants and samurai wasps!. - The Caterpillar smokes a Hookah as was popular in those days.
Language History Lessons with Gab! I actually really enjoyed learning the history of Chinese/ Japanese language in this episode and the added comments from viewers of the stream was really awesome too! Thanks as always for creating awesome content, Gab!
I thought the omega symbol stood for chaos. One of the keys on the keychain has the sign for the planet Pluto which also stands for chaos. I think this is a requiring theme because her mind is in shambles.
1:29:00 I think their heads are like that because they're lotus roots.
Chat: “She’s smoking opium.”
Gab: “It’s probably just tobacco.”
Me: “No, it’s opium.”
American McGee is just fantastic when coming to these games. As someone who loves Victorian Era/ 1800s history and these games.. Its amazing to see how hes been accurate. Not only that, but how his foreshadowing is ...👌👌👌
I absolutely love this series, I never got to play the game myself, but I love the game so much already.❤️
Gab: Sees hidden path to extra stuff.
Me: Waits for Gab to go to the hidden place.
Gab: Moves on.
:D
0:45 ---> The video is off to a great start...
30:15 - 30:20 ---> I like the style of the Japanese dress/costume/outfit the best...
1:20:16
1:41:27 - 1:41:30
“That would be perfectly splendid” lol
That little girl was so creepy 😂
Cantonese does use the traditional writing style (at least for my parents part) and it is usually spoken in the southern part of China and Hong Kong :) I love that you're playing this! I have been meaning to finish the game!
The Oriental Grove is by far my favorite section of the game. It's so dark but tranquil at the same time. And beautiful. (I was mesmerized by the lady statues as well, lol). The whole game is marvelous, I love it to pieces.
So cool to learn, that many people still know and love this game. I thought this game is almost forgotten. :) In my opinion, it was criminally underrated by critics when it came out. All I saw were reviews in the 70s range.

Gab taking in the scenery enjoyin life
Game: Instant death ON
Gab: “Tf you did not”
Game: “Absolutely” *adds spikes and pillars*
Gab: *finishes side scroller mission with one more go*
During the 1800s, many Europeans were fascinated by stories merchants told about China and Japan and the goods that were brought in from China and Japan through the silk road. They called China and Japan "exotic".
This is the perfect break in between my college classes today. Thank you for your hard work, and I hope that you and Sean are feeling well!!
There are more upgrades for your weapons if you purchase the dlc. As well as amazing new outfits!! Vote this up so Gab sees this! 🥰🖤
Oh my god, imagine her reaction to the “Flesh Maiden”!
Omg I am loving you for playing this! Here's a tip for the HUGE tar boi: you can easily shield yourself with the umbrella when he goes into flame thrower mode. Also, shrinking is another good hack to avoid getting gobbled up. You might not see this, but thought I'd put it out there anyway :) Also using the rabbit timer on wasps or any group of enemies is a great way to distract them and use the tea pot canon on them.
this game + gab playing it is an early xmas gift 😭❤️ ps. and im glad this game is getting the attention it deserves, this is an opportunity for another alice game!
I remember playing this game when it first came out and watching gab play it now gives me all sorts of nostalgia!
I just finished the last episode, lucky me! l´m enjoying this series so much
The amount of gaslighting the people around alice do. The lawyer, the therapist and the pharmasist/nurse, all disregarding her and sating that they are the only reason she's alive. Her nanny is the only one that treats her like a human being.
"these buns weren't made for toasting" the way i'm screaming
24:12 So I see that she has watched Bly Manor.
Phenomenal show but that phrase is ruined on me haha
I'm SO glad Gab picked this game up- I've never gotten to play it myself but it's a favorite of mine to watch. The story and the art style are just so unique and satisfying to watch people play (and to hopefully play myself in the future!) Keep being your awesome self Gab and I hope this game sticks with you like it has with so many of us!
My hobby-horse-loving heart hurt so bad during this whole episode 🥲🥲🤣🤣
Ain't that the truth! I love the hobby horse in this game. It kills me how hard of a time she's having because of not using it.
I'm so happy that you're loving this game. I hope you can play Bayonetta one day too... Such a funny game tho
jack: Thank you for the pancake!~
Gab: Thank you for the roses!~
jack: Look at those reflections!
Gab: That's so cool; that's so awesome!
Yup, definitely influence each other.
29:31 In the book he was smoking fancy bottle of opium if not mistaken...
It's opium that Alice is smoking, the Caterpillar is a hardcore opium addict in the books and movies. It takes something stronger than tobacco or weed for Alice's intensity of hallucinations.
The Oriental Grove is my second favorite area visual wise. My first is one of the last ones of the game
@@Winterfang ik the prelude to chapter 4 was always so cool I love the way it's laid out cuz it gives you a hit of who you're going to meet next I love it!
You can actually do some combos in this game!! Use the vorpal blade and in the end of the combo use the horse!! It helps a lot
I wish Tim Burton's version of Alice was more like this, cause this is much more his style, but of course since Disney got to it, an Alice in Wonderland movie needs to be more "kid friendly." >.> Even though the story is not kid friendly at all. But that's why we have vija games.
Her voice is so soothing
"Everything is... perfectly splendid." Was that a reference to The Haunting of Bly Manor by chance?
31:37 it's not oil, it's alcohol.
Don't know how far in advance these are recorded but the horse can break an enemy block also this is probably my favourite series rn
Yeah, "Twinkle twinkle little bat / how I wonder where you're at / like a tea tray in the sky..." I forget the rest
Love this series
You really shouldn't be using your pepper grinder for everything. It's not nearly as strong as your other weapons, and should only be used for those times when ranged attacks are absolutely necessary.
Me only using the teapot: Correct.
As rude as this may sound, I do like enemies that completely negate all the other tactics you used before. It really forces the player to try out new tactics to defeat the new enemy instead of just sticking to the pepper grinder like any other boring enemy encounter.
2:03:09
me when convincing my teacher that i can do the homework
even though i don't know what the heck we were doing on 5.3 be like:
The next chapters are going to be fire I can tell! I am very happy you like the game because well it’s one of my favorite game ever and there are only few youtubers who finished it. Not like pewdiepie, such a shame because the end is really amazing.
I know, there’s so many playthroughs of this game but it’s so hard to find ones that are actually complete
The dude at the beginning of the game is the forgetting dude, as in, he specializes in helping kids forget traumatic events.
1:28:48 For example in English, Data. Data is, officially, a plural, yet unofficially, data is either singular or plural. The singular version is "datum," which, with that word, and it being pronounced the way it's spelled, I'm not surprised that people use "data" for singular and plural usage of the word.
I really like your "Haii-Ya!" while smashing things :) Such a cute tough sound delivered by a beautiful voice
I love how I come to watch a video game and get a really interesting history lesson
2:03:40 & 2:03:47 sounds like the giant snake from God Of War
Gab: -Is talking about linguistics while I'm studying linguistics
Me: Oh yeah, it's all coming together
Did you we the name of the achievement when you got the teapot? "Death by Darjeeling"... 😂
Seeing your first video made me want to get this game for myself 🥰 it’s fun to play through the game myself a bit and then seeing how you do it definitely helping with my perspective and problem solving 🖤 I hope you’re having a wonderful day ✨🥰
Seriously, the sounds in this game are so satisfying!
6:57 this big bois always remind of how Mr. X and Nemesis charge at you
alice rips that bong like a CHAMP BRO!!!!
It’s a hookah lol
Art style of this game reminds me of a blend of Tim Burton and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.
2 superior artists :)

1:24:55 Malaysia ppl here also can speak Cantonese and Hokkien and there is other languages we also can speak but not all malaysian can understand all languages even myself can't keep up on it 😂
I've always loved snow in games, especially when it's realistic sounding when the character walks on it. I live in Rhode Island so I'm no stranger to snow. Sometimes it's nice, but when it melts and keeps coming back it feels like Spring will never be here and it makes me sad.
