This. Was. Awesome. Probably one of the best YT videos I've seen in a long time, if I'm honest. Have a 2021 Canyon AT4 and, aside from the LGZ and 8 speed that mine has, this has to be the next best thing to looking into the future. Also my first vehicle bought new, I had the exact same reservations about buying GM as it sounds like you did, despite growing up with one in our driveway all my life. I'd have been pretty annoyed if my deflection from Honda turned out to be a shit pile. So far, I'm just shy of 26,000km, the computer in the dash has 7.3L/100km as the best it's ever done, and I plan to have mine for as long as possible as well. Big fan of quality things that I can keep around for a while. Thank you; I didn't think I could be any happier with my decision so far, and I am having seen this.
Thanks for the great rundown of your experience with your Canyon! My wife and I have a 2021 GMC Canyon Elevation Crew Cab 2.8L Duramax Turbodiesel 2WD which currently has 70,000km. Like you, this was our very first brand new vehicle purchase but we were upgrading from a 2017 GMC Canyon Ext Cab 2WD with the 2.5L gasser and wanted the extra cab space and power. The fact that my wife is a GM technician and we got employee pricing certainly helped with the decision to go with the Canyon. So far it's been super reliable and fuel efficient with our average economy hanging around the 7.5-8L/100km range while our best ever is 5.2L/100km so it goes up against our 2014 Civic 5MT for fuel economy. We're also in Ontario, specifically in the Great Lakes snowbelt, so we run a set of Michelin X-Ice in the winter and we've never found a situation yet where we wanted 4X4. It's also towed right around the 5,000lb mark with ease and regularly carries larger, heavy loads without breaking a sweat. We honestly love everything about the truck and plan to keep it for many years to come. Regarding your issues with the 6L50 transmission, when we had our 2017 my wife actually had to reprogram the transmission programming in 2020 to address the shuddering issue. GM released a special policy for the transmission shudder on 2015-2018/9 models to address the issue so your truck may need to have this reprogramming done as well. Our diesel also has the 6L50 but GM updated the transmission in 2018 or 2019 and it does not have those issues anymore. Regardless, the 6L50 is super reliable and, despite it's issues, is better than the failure-prone 8L45 in the 2017-2022 V6 models.
I have a 2015 Colorado with 80k miles. I put a catch can on it at 10k miles and had the transmission reflashed IAW a TSP. Shifts great now. Did the rear brakes at 70k. Happy so far.
We’ve had a few of these trucks and they have been phenomenal. ‘15 went 375k on original drivetrain. Oil pump failed, put in a low mileage used engine and it went to 450k when the trans cooler inside the radiator failed and took out the tranny. Our ‘19 is currently at 325k and going strong. We have two others with around 150k on them. Minimal issues. We just bought a ‘24 Colorado WT and two ‘24 Canyon AT4s. Trucks are awesome, hope they are as reliable as the previous gen.
That's pretty incredible mileage out of these. GM direct injected v6 has been around forever and from what i saw was very durable. Curious to see how the next generation works out. I wanted a new canyon really bad but no long bed was non negotiable for me.
New 4cyl turbo has been in the full size trucks for several years at this point with no major mechanical trends to speak of. I imagine in a truck that weighs 15% less and a reinforced transmission the l3b should be fairly foolproof. Electrical systems on the other hand… we need to stop trying to make vehicles be computers in every possibly way. Gremlins bad.
@@hamms5560We’re in the service industry, so they aren’t seeing any brutal abuse. But a lot of miles, much of it is on backroads and state/county roads. Lots of extended idle time as well.
Now I feel even better about buying my 2019 Colorado Z71 CCLB V6 at 71,000 miles in Nov 22. It now has almost 130,000. Yes. 50,000 miles in 2 years. We drive a lot in South Texas, I know nothing of this Crown of which you speak . No major issues , still haven’t had the chance to take it off road in the Big Bend desert region. Easily pulls our Casita camper trailer . I’m 6’2” 235, drive all day with no discomfort . It was a big change coming from a Ram 2500 Cummins. I also have a 98 Tacoma SR5 five lug 2wd 2.4 auto as a daily runabout . I have no regrets . Oh, interior is holding up well in Texas heat.
I've had my 2015 for almost a year now and she's super cute 🥰 I had to learn how much different than my 1966 she is,but I can leave em at the stoplight every time. It's fun. Fair to say I like mine for sure 😊 don't need to worry about the governor cause it's fast enough for me.
I have a 2015 Canyon All-Terrain and my driver side window does the same thing. I bought it used with 50k miles in 2020 and it now has 83k miles. I've had no major issues with it so far. Honestly, havent really had any issues with it, knock on wood. I love the truck and plan on having it for years to come.
Thank You!!! 2018 Colorado ZR2 with 90 k on it will be delivered in a couple hrs. Last minute review binging while I can still pull the plug. I feel more confident after watching your video. I have a newer boat I picked up last year and my 08 f350 power-stroke is only doing 9 mpg dragging it to the lake. With this my goal is hitting up some of the lakes a bit further away and more often. Of course the down side, my to do list at home will grow even faster....Gone Fishing!!!
Another note I decided to hang onto the f350 for the big jobs but, after watch this and others it sounds like a Colorado is capable and I probably going to have an f350 for sale soon.
I put a bad news racing tune in this at about 30,000 miles which helped but the shutter was still there. Gonna have to look into the trifecta. The hesitation has almost gotten me into some trouble a few times. Nothing like stomping on the gas and having nothing happen for a whole 1.5 seconds 😰
@@SDSGarage89 100 % recommend getting this Tune !!! I stumbled along @madhatter5331 s comment, did some research, and committed to getting the tune and WOW, world of difference!! Now, after the tune, it just drives exactly how it should ! Also, as a bonus, I can push about 26.5 MPG taking it easy on the highway. Solid 2-3 MPG increase overall which in itself pays for the tune after 30k or so miles ! Would be super cool to see a before and after video review of the product on your channel! Also, thanks for the original Trans fluid video! You saved me mega headaches by your problems you had to work through!
I just purchased a 2016 Chevy Colorado Z 71 with pretty much the same package you have in your canyon. I can’t wait to take possession of it next Monday. I hear the shitty downshifting can be addressed by putting a throttle response controller module from “ Wind Booster “ that pretty much adjust the mapping, to make it quicker off the line and eliminate the gas pedal lag… i’m also planning to install LEDs all around and replace the original stock lightbulbs
Bought my 2017 babymax new as my daily driver to replace 2 vehicles: 2000 7.3L Powerstroke & Mustang convertible (daily driver). Pulled the same as you describe: long ranges, heavy loads . . . I'd add in that we're in the deep SOUTH. So, none of the salt decay you're showing, but LOTS of 100+ degree days pulling those loads across melting asphalt. :) Only repair was intake manifold gasket, which cost me $100 and the rest under extended service plan. Replaced it with a 2023 3.0L AT4. My wife now has my Canyon and just rolled 110,000. Getting ready to schedule the timing belt change. :( Great little truck. Shame GM gave up on the 2.8. So far the AT4 is proving to be a great upgrade; just rolled 38,000.
If you would have stuck with Fram filters it would still be running fine. I've used them since the 60's and never had a problem. The only problem I've had with my 16 Colorado in 87000 miles is the purge valve at about 30000 miles. I've never had a transmission shudder or hard shifting but I do use trailer mode in town. I love mine.
This might be better for your vehicle if it works. When you have the window trouble, hold the button down until the window is all the way down and then let go, then raise the button and hold it until the window is all the way up and stops. That may reset it like my 2019
Bought a new 21 Colorado WT Crew Cab 4x4 V6. I'll have had it 4 years soon and I love it. I think I have the right year, assembled during covid before any shortages, close to the last of the V6's when they were basically as sorted out as they ever would be. No rust yet, but it is a concern because I only put on about 9000km per year so far and my goal is to get 12 to 15 years out of her. Ambitious sure, but at my current rate, I would still be well under 100,000 miles. No work so far besides about 5 oil changes. I have to change it based on time not mileage so around every 8 months. I dont regret getting the base trim at all as it was very well optioned and looks far from cheap. The only upgrade I wish I could have got that wasnt available on the WT would have been a leather wrapped steering wheel. This is the first vehicle I've owned in the last 20 years without one and it not only feels cheap, about twice a year, in a certain humidity, gross dirt just slides off and into your hands. You can scrub it all you want and 80% will come off but the other 20% won't budge until its the perfect temperature and humidity and then the whole steering wheel is just plain nasty.
You can buy a leather wheel on rock auto. It’s not insanely expensive if I recall. I looked into swapping in a heated wheel on my truck a while back. Check it out. Great trucks
I got a 2015 Canyon 3.6 4x4 with 153,000 miles like yours like purge valve at the exact mileage. Did have to replace the waterpump at 150000 miles. I live in south texas in extreme heat & luckily I haven't had any transmission issue at all , not like anything you describe, I need to do the transmission fluid service but I'm afraid of actually causing harm to the transmission from changing fluid. Wouldn't trade it for anything else. Well maybe a ZR2
Thanks for your response. Great channel,I have learned a lot. Please give me your opinion on brakes. Powerstop or factory ? Almost time for brakes. Enjoy your day. 👍
Based on my experience with them I’d go Powerstop without a doubt. My factory rotors warped badly but pad life was in excess of 50%. I have about 45,000 miles on this set of brakes and they are great. The drilled and slotted rotors make more noise under braking and will wear down pads faster but for what I do they are perfect. Factory rotors may not give you as much trouble if you aren’t towing as heavy and often as I do. Good luck 🤝
After seeing many rotor corrosion testing videos I went with OE on the F350 because auto manufatuers have stricter standards to follow. With the crap put down here in northern Idaho to keep the ice off the roads it destroyed the aftermarket rotors that were on it when I bought the truck in no time.
Wish my 22 GMC canyon was a good truck but it wasn't, bought it new had it to the dealership 8 times within 15,000 miles. And I loved that truck but I had to cut ties and let it go and got a 23 Tacoma and I'm at 16,000 miles and not one time at the dealership.
Dang. I drive a Toyota Prius for work and I want a smaller midsize truck. Been looking at the canyon but daym. I’m at 245,000 miles and I couldn’t imagine dealing with all these issues at, not even close to that. 🤦🏽♂️ I love the Canyon tho, I want it.
Great review in many ways. To me it appears, if we made a list, that a number of items have failed over the truck’s lifetime, items that I would not expect to fail from a Tacoma. I do like that you say you are 100% happy with your purchase decision. Curious, what are your top 5 favorite things about this truck? As a standalone list or when compared to a Tacoma? I’m looking to get a daily driver that will on occasion (10-15% of my miles) tow my 3500 pound travel trailer. Any insights are appreciated!
I had a 17 Terrain with the 3.6 v6 and the 6 speed auto (also AWD) and that transmission was also garbage. I love the 8 speed in my 19 canyon. That being said, I appreciate the info on your brake upgrades, I also frequently tow with mine so that will be a future investment. Good to hear otherwise it's been mechanically solid. I only had one major service item that was covered via warranty (being the water pump pulley/ bearing). I haven't had the mirror rust issue on mine, but I have lost some of the button backlighting in my HVAC controls.

If a belt, another cost to include in ownership. The cost to replace the belt buys a fair amount of gas. Any insights are appreciated!
Top 5 would be: 1) interior. Toyota interiors are absolutely garbage with bad tech. You add in what you pay for that AND the fact the cabs in them do not fit people over 5’8” the thing I hate most about taco’s 2) looks better IMO 3) engine (more powerful and better on fuek) 4) bed is deeper, made of steel and not plastic and can hold more 5) comfortable to drive long distance These have timing chains. 254,000KM and never did anything to mine.
dang dude you’re the first video i’ve seen that has held onto aGM vehicle and stayed on top of maintenance and still running, i was looking at some 21 chevy colorado ZR2. or maybe get a 2020 tacoma SR5 pre owned
No point in letting it fall apart. It’s been a great truck and in my opinion, a better option vs a Toyota. Yota fan bois will always say “BuT tHe TaCoMa Is MoRe ReAlIaBlE” which is true, but they are not that much more reliable. Plus, when you factor in how much more capable a canyon is, the features and the fact it’s not a 15 year old design, no brainer for me.
The day my 2017 chevrolet colorado its her last straw. I will restore it as new. Give me no problems and did your thermostat and coolant sensor gives no problems?
17:20 I have a 21 Colorado Z71 and I've noticed with the auto window that if I hit any kind of somewhat significant bump in the road while that window is going up it will go down. I believe it's the safety feature where if a dumb kid sticks their head through the window and the window hits resistance it will automatically go back down. I think something about hitting a bump triggers this safety feature unintentionally. Not sure if that feature is related to your issue or not.
I have a 19 Denali with 35k miles. I keep up on regular maintenance and so far, its all good. Yeah, 35k miles is not a lot of milage but I have a second vehicle (a ford) that is my daily driver. The Canyon has been trouble free with multiple cross country trips to South Florida towing an 18 ft boat. Actually, the trans is a good towing system. I had that window issue once and I just removed the battery ground and problem solved.
I had it tuned back in the day which did help. It needed a clean slate as far as program was concerned. Didn’t slip or break but very frustrating to live with. I had heard the 8 speed was better.
@SteveDoesStuff89 I just bought 2016 with 146,000 and put about 800 miles on it. I've been servicing everything on it. The only weird issue is 3rd gear shifts different than the rest. I did pull the pan to check condition. It was clean, even the filter media was pink and not brown or black, but the fluid was old and not as transparent as the new fluid. 3rd still shifts different but does shift little faster. I still need to save up for battery and engine overhaul as it needs a timing belt and going to do water pump and balancer while I'm in it.
I actually made an entire series about it but ended up delisting them. Posting vids about different subjects kinda messes with the UA-cam algorithm so I pulled them.
Do they do new software for transmissions because the 19 is perfect with the diesel and that 6-speed. Not perfect but not the things you're describing. Lol
I think why you are getting a better experience is the torque with the little turbo diesel. The LFX doesn’t have near the torque it does and it seems like that’s what the transmission is looking for.
careful of them cooper tires..... i had 4 new ones on my truck... after about a year two bubble out the side wall and one started to bubble out, all with in two months. will never go buy cooper again
It must have been the same trans in my ‘19 Silverado LD (legacy model, same as ‘18). I too don’t care for automatics, but that six speed was the biggest piece of shit slush box I’ve ever had to live with. Just got rid of it after 205k miles. That tranny never knew what to do. Made you feel like you didn’t know how to drive or something lol.
Dude I had that same purge valve solenoid issue in my '15 Canyon All Terrain and it had me PANICKED for a minute. Easy fix tho lol have you not had any issues with your sway bar links yet? I also absolutely hate the transmission. I've read that getting a Pedal Commander or a Banks Pedal Monster completely negate this issue. I've thought about dropping the $300 USD to test it out but that's a good chunk of money for it to possibly not work lol
Haha yep, the super loud tick scared the crap out of me. Especially when it stalled at a light 😰. As for the transmission, I have heard all sorts of remedy’s, difference fluid, pedal commanders, not sure how much it would do. My TCM flash helped, but it still sucked….
No need to be sorry about it. Over 8 years, there were definitely some issues, nothing catastrophic but definitely some little things. I would still buy one over a taco. Comfier, better on fuel, better equipped, but that is subjective 🤷🏻♂️
Is someone trying to compare A Toyota to a GMC, First off Toyotas are made with Third grade Steel, Look it up, Toyotas are made for third world markets.
Did you notice the truck still not run good after you changed the purge valve? I just changed mine the check engine light is still on so I’m hoping it just needs to be reset

I love my 2015 GMC Canyon and it still runs great!
Got a 2016 canyon slt 82500 mi without any problems do brakes an oil changes myself great little truck
How about your oil cooler lines ?
Ah balls! I forgot to include my oil lines! I changed those out at about 135,000 miles.
I have a 2016 Canyon diesel. 143k+ miles now. Drives great. Want to drive it till the wheels fall off and then some.
But how many kilometers??? 🧐
I so wish I bought the diesel. Is it deleted?
Dude that “if you speak freedom” line was awesome! Best thing I’ve heard in awhile!
Went to go check out a 2016 canyon with 130k miles and after a 10 minute test drive, it was dumping tranny fluid. Im good
Dang. I drive a Toyota Prius for work and I want a smaller midsize truck. Been looking at the canyon but daym. I’m at 245,000 miles and I couldn’t imagine dealing with all these issues at, not even close to that. 🤦🏽♂️ I love the Canyon tho, I want it.
i was laughing so hard at the transmission speech at the end. I feel the EXACT same way lol. I hate it
Looking at a ‘19 Colorado, haven’t had an American vehicle in quite a while. Think I may get it 🇺🇸
Have your dealer update the programming described in TSB 18-NA-145. It will fix 98% of the transmission issues.
I really want to get a GMC Canyon. They look like nice trucks.
Big thing on the older Taco is the small cab height and extreme. Used price. GM is quick and good ride, I'd. Still buy a 1500.
Bob my 2019 at 5 years old just recently and about four times the window (dic) has asked me to roll it all the way up and all the way down.

Also, does this have a timing belt or chain? If a belt, another cost to include in ownership. The cost to replace the belt buys a fair amount of gas.
Any insights are appreciated!
Top 5 would be:
1) interior. Toyota interiors are absolutely garbage with bad tech. You add in what you pay for that AND the fact the cabs in them do not fit people over 5’8” the thing I hate most about taco’s
2) looks better IMO
3) engine (more powerful and better on fuek)
4) bed is deeper, made of steel and not plastic and can hold more
5) comfortable to drive long distance
These have timing chains.
@@SDSGarage89 i agree i had a buddy whose tacoma was having issues early on they’re not perfect but i did enjoy my 4Runner
I have that same issue with my truck with the wet window roll up does not work on driver side
Very interesting. Did the control panel ever get wet by leaving the window down? If not it must be a moisture issues inside the door.
The day my 2017 chevrolet colorado its her last straw. I will restore it as new. Give me no problems and did your thermostat and coolant sensor gives no problems?
No issues with the cooling system at all
Good video I made the mistake of trusting a dealer and suffice to say been ripped off big by boy er time eh pickerel
grats with 160
What engine ?
3.6 LFX V6
I heard there's tuners for the transmissions😉
I still need to save up for battery and engine overhaul as it needs a timing belt and going to do water pump and balancer while I'm in it.
how do you folk have brakes lasting this long? ive never had any last more than 2-3 years before warping on my vehicles lol
Where's the video of you driving across the country
I actually made an entire series about it but ended up delisting them. Posting vids about different subjects kinda messes with the UA-cam algorithm so I pulled them.
Is this the 3.6?
Yep
Do they do new software for transmissions because the 19 is perfect with the diesel and that 6-speed. Not perfect but not the things you're describing. Lol
I think why you are getting a better experience is the torque with the little turbo diesel. The LFX doesn’t have near the torque it does and it seems like that’s what the transmission is looking for.
careful of them cooper tires..... i had 4 new ones on my truck... after about a year two bubble out the side wall and one started to bubble out, all with in two months. will never go buy cooper again
We speak freedom
Sorry, man, but that's a lot to go wrong.
No need to be sorry about it. Over 8 years, there were definitely some issues, nothing catastrophic but definitely some little things. I would still buy one over a taco. Comfier, better on fuel, better equipped, but that is subjective 🤷🏻♂️
tRaiLEr BrAkeS... DerP.
Is someone trying to compare A Toyota to a GMC, First off Toyotas are made with Third grade Steel,
Look it up, Toyotas are made for third world markets.
Did you notice the truck still not run good after you changed the purge valve? I just changed mine the check engine light is still on so I’m hoping it just needs to be reset
Any time a light comes on you need to clear the code with a scanner. They will not self clear.
