How slow do you go?
I like fact Junior takes it nice and easy... he teaching the proper way. I am sure if Junior wanted to he knows how to hall ass down that hell no problem and control the truck, but he is trying to teach and show its okay to go nice and slow, don't rush when you're new. Dude is outstanding teacher, Prime is lucky to have him.
know this. When going down a 6% grade, 6th-7th gear is where you want it with the jake brakes on. Having low RPM going down this hill is bad. Higher the RPM (NOT PAST 1500 RPM). The higher the RPM, the more the oil pressure. Jake Brakes work off oil pressure, more oil pressure the better the Jake brakes will hold back and work properly. This is loaded heavy. (Hot brakes = No brakes). This is how trucks catch fire. They lose their brakes cus they used them too much and not using the proper stabbing motion. (slow the truck to posted speed, stab the brakes firmly till speed is 5 mph lower than posted heavy truck speed, once the truck reaches the posted speed, repeat the break stab back to 5 mph lower than posted speed limit for trucks. Most trucks catch fire due to failure safety procedures. They hold the brake and when they noticed that their brakes are slowly not working, they hold the brakes down trying to stop and they wont. If you some how make it to the bottom of the grade and your brakes are smoking, DO NOT STOP, keep rolling and get them brakes cooled or call the fire department to meet you a few miles up the road that way they are there when you get there and the load will be protected from a fire. Drivers make the mistake of seeing the brakes smoking and they stop thinking its gonna make the brakes cool, That is false. the wind is what cools the brakes, if you keep moving, all the brakes will do is smoke, you stop, the wind stops and the brake will produce more heat and tires will adsorb the heat and will burst into flames. REMEMBER THIS.

Junior Honduras I have been watching since early 2016. I decided this year to enroll in driving school. I graduated this week and test next week then off with a trainer. This video was played by our instructor which I saw when you originally uploaded it. The instructor explained the reason for showing the video for us to observe how it's done, he then said in this field you will bond with people. He told the story of Rodney. The class was moved. I want to say to all truckers out there I respect y'all as a trucker myself I see y'all out there I'm currently in California kinda got myself in this situation. Now I learned my lesson to not ever ever use cbd oil for pain or whatever . Now I'm paying the price by taking education classes with SAP well the time almost comes for me to take the class and I am happy to say that everytime I see y'all out there just now I'm there to help out by backing if I ever see someone struggling . California has some tight spaces. Thank you for the video once again

I believe you were on Parley’s Pass. That is actually the stretch of road England’s school trainers took us on during our behind the wheel training. Believe it or not, Day 1 took us on I-80 within the first two minutes of driving. Day 2 took us on Parley’s Pass. Back then, I think they just wanted to separate the men from the boys ASAP. I remember feeling like I was in waaay over my head, but was determined to keep it together anduse my training. This video you made was pretty much spot on how we were taught back in ‘95.

I just finished a run from NYC to N. Cali.
I did the I-80 Donner Pass route, moved a family member. No engine brake and a automatic 7 speed. Just wish I had the Freightliner I used to drive.

Thanks Junior, I’m currently in my tnt phase but I know there is a lot I’m not being taught by my trainer. Almost every experience feels like sink or swim. He’s a great guy but just not as passionate and involved as you are when preparing students for the challenges of this job. Jr Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. Currently going through TNT @ Prime. Had to get off my first truck as I hardly ever felt safe doing anything I was doing behind the wheel. Pretty much being let loose to figure this all out for myself, and when I do wrong comes the "teaching" I actually went down this very same mountain on my first week on his truck at night alone upfront and having no clue about how exactly to manage speed or the operation of an engine break... I'm finding your videos very helpful insightful & educational. Thank you.

What I learned from you in this video is downshifting going down hill normally I leave it in a gear that holds it slow the whole way. But you worked it more smoothly.

I've taught students on that same hill. Seen more than a few "Pro" drivers smoking their brakes down that hill. I do keep my CB on though. I have no trouble ignoring idiots who wanna talk trash (they generally don't) but I like having it on in case someone wants to tell me something I don't notice (ie; problems with the rear of my trailer, traffic jam around a bend, etc.).

I went down that mountain a couple of months ago. It was a piece of cake. Ran down it with 42000 lbs on and used 8th gear. Ran down it about 1500 to 1800 rpms. Never used the brake but twice. I do have a 3 stage jake and I was smart enough to stop at the top like you are supposed to.

That’s very true my cdl school just made sure I didn’t touch any curbs,cross any lines or speed they never even mentioned hills found out about hills once I started driving with my trainer in San Diego at night while raining lol…hope it’s going well for you
Tbh, it’s not really a CDL schools job to spend a whole lot of time on steep grades, especially if they are in a state that doesn’t have much of them. That’s why the company you go to work for has that orientation/drive with a trainer. If they are going to send you through the mountains, they need to train you on them.
This reminds me of my question to a school representative about putting off school until I could take advantage of winter training. They aren't to keen on the idea of endangering their instructors or equipment with rookies behind the wheel in knowingly dangerous situations. What I got out of it is they'd rather take the safe route for themselves and let rookies learn on their own, in time.

I usually just put my four ways on and just let the engine brake do most of the work and keep my foot away from the service brake

Had to do this just now going east on I70 in Utah. There was one hell of a grade there along with sharp turns.
My trainer didn’t drive into any mountain 🏔 and we were 2 students we basically drive all the time but I remember driving for almost 4 hours in the Rocky Mountain Colorado and the truck was over heat and smoke. I was so scared cause it was my first time seeing something like that. I was watching this video before that I could have an idea of how to do it.

Excellent driving Junior. I always loved trucking sims as a kid, Hard Truck 2 and 18 wheels of steel were my favorites. Never did became a trucker though.
American Truck Simulator is prolly the best out now.

Nice video Junior, I remember that I80 stretch very well when I was training over the road about 6 years ago. And it scared the shit out of me!!!!! But I would really like to see you do a video of a decent on a 6 or 7 percent downgrade in the snow, in the worst possible weather conditions. NOT to see you in any danger, but to show everyone how it's done. Because you and I know we can't use that engine brake in the snow, and every OTR driver has to deal with that eventually. PLEASE, use the same head camera you did in this video, but only record it on the worst possible day for a snowstorm downhill decent. You know the day will come eventually, and that was the scariest damn thing I ever did. If you film it right, you'll probably get the most views of any of your UA-cam videos. Just a thought. Stay safe out there man, you got balls of steel staying OTR. I couldn't take it anymore after 2 years. I'm local now.

lots of different dynamics go into these grades, but you go down however you feel comfortable within reason so to speak... a driver has got to know his or her limitations.

The goal is to.not just get down the grade. It's to get down the grade safely, with your brakes still functioning.

A few years ago there were 2 Swift trucks in the Same Run Off on the Bullhead City road. The Smoke was terrible but funny at the same time.
Phenomenal video! I hold a Class-A and don’t go down any steep grades like 6% but it’s always good to know. I did do contract work this last summer to North Carolina and I went through the West Virginia turnpike. I was driving a straight-truck but still that was an experience. I definitely was doing stab braking but I was letting it rip down those hills. I wouldn’t be doing that with a combination lol

The one good thing about learning way back when in ca is that there is a mountain anyway you want out. After the second time going over them it was easy mode

Went down my first mountain. Mount eagle. It's super easy. Just activate your engine brake and be on 7th gear, and it's a smooth sailing down.

great video and helpful tips . the funny thing is that i was just here the other day driving this in the dark for my first time solo i seen even other truck passing me up i thought they was crazy or they really had to use the bathroom lol . my trainer always told me its your world you do what you need to do to get home safe . its dont matter what the DM or the COSTUMER wants there not driving you are!!! keep it rolling ... i dont know if its ok to ask but i believe that i met you before when i was a WIL-TRAINS have you worked there at one time ?

IMHO.. There is no comparison between the two. Prime is head and shoulders above CRST. I liken it to Major league baseball and T-Ball. Go with Prime.

This is Parley's Summit; it is the 3rd highest point on the 2,900 mile length of I-80. Only Wyoming and California see higher elevations on I-80.
Thanks for the help with the exact location , I moved to Salt Lake on 1 November 2015 and all I know is it was in the Wasatch Mountains , so was that I - 80 ?

I can let my car idle down and it gets up to 85 MPH. I-25 CO/NM Border. I live at exit 6. Have you ever been over that one?
I don't think I told you this but I was a Colorado Port of Entry Officer for two years at the first port in northbound on I-25 in Colorado.

Just went over US6 in Utah tonight (5%/8mlz) and the roads were pretty nasty. They already have snow up there.
