While I feel like I stepped back to the 80's as a student trucker I found the information helpful. My instructor called it Stabbing but described it the same.
Thank you. I pull bottom dumps with a small CAT motor in a Peterbilt with 650,000 miles and a weak jake. It's no fun going downhill. The advice here is what I knew all along, snub enough to reduce mph by 5, and in truck school it was said don't use the brakes over 25% of the time. In other words, riding the brakes downhill is NOT to be done.
25 years experience here and I still watch videos like this now and then and sometimes still learn things. Great video. New drivers should be taught with manual transmissions and no jakes just to have a better understanding of how to react in an emergency situation. I've driven automatics and although they are nice, it's easy to really too much on the truck to do the work for you.
Thanks Jeff for sharing your video. It's always good to get a reminder from a professional like you. You are a good guy. Keep up the good work. May God bless you!
I learned most of this when my dad taught me how to drive a car. I laugh when I see drivers applying their brakes all the way down a grade. They keep the brake shops busy.
Not true you'll never learn how to break and you won't be able to follow posted speed... also the commentator never once mentioned the ABS automatic braking system that trucks have nowadays!
Done mountains with multiple 10% grade fully load super B of jet fuel 63 ton for the first time let me tell you the first hill made me live a little brown streak after that smooth sailing
I have been driving like this for years before I watched this video and now I know why I don't have to replace brakes this also explains why I drive other vehicles and the brakes suck
What they don't tell you is what to do in a braking emergency. 1. go full jake 2. get them downshift DONE!!! 3. STAND on that god damn brake pedal- let 'em burn! 4. make plan if it all goes to hell. I got down Donner Pass O.K. by doing all of the above. And when you stop, throttle up and alternate tractor/trailer brake release to give them a cooling air gap.
I'll crossing at least once a week from the dangerous mountain's of Pennsylvania's, WEST Virginia's, and sometimes Tennessee's it'll be tech you automatically how to control even you're student driver when you had with heavy load!
I gotta steep climb/decent coming up soon with a 12ton rated equip trailer loaded to the max with paving equip behind a heavy kW 10wheeler with a bc350= not happy, kinda scared lol wish me luck. Snub snub SNUB!!
gear down and use your engine brake. and you don't need your service brakes untill you hit 8 to 10 miles per hour or so. basicly coming to a stop sign. Red light. ect. if your doing it right.
I'm just letting all the newbies no when your brakes are hot and you stopped your truck. Do not apply Park breaking. Specially in the winter. Chalk your wheels and put the transmission in reverse if you're on flat ground. Or also lower your landing gear on the trailer if you do not want to put your transmission in reverse.
You should be teaching the new based always use their Jake’s. If you’re using your Jakes properly and downshifting, you shouldn’t be having issues with your brakes being too hot.
outlawing jake brakes is just stupid, especially in an area with steep grades. safety or some yuppie complaining about noise, which one is more important. without the jake your going to heat your brakes up and then they become less effective.
newer jakes are alot quieter. the old Detroits and Cummins would rattle windows in a little town at night lol. Especially the the old V8 jimmys . They sounded like a truckload of firing machine guns especially at night with area with an echo. They were awesome with straight pipes for going by your ex wifes house as well.. Other than that, just keep it in a low enough gear to hold it back on the engine. The 5 minutes your saving isn't worth the cost of the brake wear. But getting the ex may be worth it in your eyes lol
Snub/stab braking is used so that all the brakes help slow you, light brake pedal pressure may only apply pressure to a few brakes due to bad adjustment/mechanical issues. Stab braking is also best with self adjustable brakes because feathering/dragging does not make the cam go far enough to click the next adjustment level.
The weight of the truck tells you what gear you need to drop down into... an 80,000 lb truck and a 7% downgrade... drop down three gears... if that's too slow you could always upshift one gear... some veteran drivers do drag braking which is obsolete it's best to do snub braking even wear on the brakes and less Heat!
I go along with everything the guy says, except I can't believe he says you should dab (snub) the brakes on a long downgrade. As far as I am concerned you shouldn't use the brakes at all. You should drive at such a speed that you only use the engine brakes. I'm talking long downgrades here I always reckon you should drive at such a speed that if the driveline fails, you can pull up just using the foundation brakes. I've seen fatal crashes where guys burned out their brakes.
This guy has NEVER drove truck. if you go down 7% grade for 14 miles snubbing your brakes you will run out of brakes. Best rule is use the gear that you don't have to touch your brakes and never turn it loose until you see the bottom.
Stabbraking is BS I've never used this and never had any problems I started in 1973 without a Jake light steady pressure in the right gear and they work fine I tried that stab braking BS it sucked I drove over 43+ years hauled cattle out of steep hills then moved on to everything else ..
This was hysterically hillarious 😂😂😂 In the modern civilized world disc-brakes, engine-brake and retarder makes all of this to a history class... Moral of the story is that BRAKES is to STOP the vehicle, while engine brake and retarder is there to hold back downhill....
this first part is a joke in its self. So where is our beloved Vehicle Safety Commission to stop this and too make our trucks safer? Back pocket of our politicians, company's, insurance company's and the list goes on.. Its appalling that they for the money, would put our safety last and the money first. This has to stop..
Anybody that's tried to start a fire knows u have to fan it or blow air on it to get it going. When u "stab" ur brakes it blowing air thru ur brake system maker the brakes hotter and can cause a fire. If u keep steady pressure on ur brakes, not all the way down, but light pressure and apply more pressure as needed but then just ease back off to light pressure. This will keep u from fanning the heat. This guy reads from a script, I've got 22yrs OTR, I go over Mount eagle 80k all the time in truck with no Jakes.
@@Bendigo1 ur stupid, fire needs air to burn. why do u think when people start fires you'll see them blow on them to get them goin. So if you take the hot brakes and start pumping air on them they'll heat up then u got a fire. If you keep pressure on them, not a lot but just enough to where there's no air moving and just pressing them harder when needed no air blows on them then no fire. There is a saying don't fan the flames. This is what is wrong with trucking today , there's too many dumbasses out here that don't know shit and when someone who's been driving for 20yrs tells them something they don't listen to because they know already.
While I feel like I stepped back to the 80's as a student trucker I found the information helpful. My instructor called it Stabbing but described it the same.
i do not remember going thru this at all when i went to school? nor do i remember setting me trailer axles back
Thank you. I pull bottom dumps with a small CAT motor in a Peterbilt with 650,000 miles and a weak jake. It's no fun going downhill. That is so right, that wasn't taught in the early 80's to me anyhow.... I had to learn the hard way.
25 years experience here and I still watch videos like this now and then and sometimes still learn things. Great video. Exactly!😂 I hate to see it
Brake shop… what’s that?
It's fascinating that I used to brake like that, without even knowing that truckers technique.
no they keep morgues busy
9th Sept 2021.
Still great information.
Great tutorial.
Thank you.
I love the way this guy talks. He's a smooth operator no homo
if u can come to a complete stop without your foot brakes, using nothing but your Jake brake , your in the right gear for the hill
This applies to any truck that can pull a trailer. Mine is equipped to do so with a hitch so thanks for sharing this Jeff.
Entering a downgrade at a safe, controlled speed as indicated at 8:56 can save one a lot of anxiety as they get further into the grade.
You right. I was taught to be in 7th when approaching a grade and adjust speed and gear near the crest
I have been driving like this for years before I watched this video and now I know why I don't have to replace brakes this also explains why I drive other vehicles and the brakes suck

The old rule I was told was, go DOWN the hill in the same gear you would use going UP the hill. "Snubbing" the brakes works well too.
I gotta steep climb/decent coming up soon with a 12ton rated equip trailer loaded to the max with paving equip behind a heavy kW 10wheeler with a bc350= not happy, kinda scared lol wish me luck. Snub snub SNUB!!
How'd it go?
i think it went badly
Mr Fermec Are u alive?
It's a technique I have come to learn from this channel and I use it cause the truck I drive has no working engine brake
All motorized vehicles have engine brake, just lift ur leg up from the gas pedal :)
Thanks Chief for the great tips. Great learning Teacher
Very helpful
Thank you very much. this is a good excellent this is how we should learn be bless
Very good instructor very professional
Apply ur retarder fully
Apply brakes for 3 second
Release the pedal
Let it cool off
If u feel like going fast again reapply the brake.
Fantastic… instructions n so helpful. Thank u.
whats going on crazy trucker we all wish you was back on the road you made some great trucking vid we will see you later old buddy Rickey oswalt
gear down and use your engine brake. and you don't need your service brakes untill you hit 8 to 10 miles per hour or so. basicly coming to a stop sign. Red light. ect. if your doing it right.
if you follow these directions in the video to the T. You will be surprised at the temp of the brakes....

Why? What if it’s manual?
You should be teaching the new based always use their Jake’s. If you’re using your Jakes properly and downshifting, you shouldn’t be having issues with your brakes being too hot.
to brake downhill i always trow my anchor....
You can also just run up in back of another truck and use his brakes.
lol
+John Ferguson. haaa
This is good stuff
if u gotta touch your foot brakes down the hill , your in to high of a gear

That's not happening in today's all automatic transmission and week engines, I'm driving a new 2023 Cascadia with No manual option.
Excellent advice.
It's always good to inspect the brakes before going down grade
Snub seems to be used due to drum brakes and probably uneven pressure released from relays, and few other imperfections
Snub/stab braking is used so that all the brakes help slow you, light brake pedal pressure may only apply pressure to a few brakes due to bad adjustment/mechanical issues. Wow norm macdonald is really good at narrating
I have a old 94 5.9 turbo diesel dodge if I carry heavy trailers what are more forms of breaking besides my truck brakes
we used to call it Mexican neutral, go neutral down hill and coast uphill
turn your engine fan on & Ull get 10% more power outta your Jake brake
i did not know that. thanks, driver.
Wrong
Yeah and guess what You also start heating shit up. Engine temps go up. Pyrometer will go wtf... yeah good advice..
I have a 0.8 tons Suzuki Alto 800, and I use the air conditioner in first gear, on a 25% grade, It feels like an exhaust brake 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Awesome video
When all else fells make sure you jump far away from the truck.
Good advice. I like that the best (jump as away)
Ten, thank you for thanking me :)
Use whatever level braking effect of the engine to maintain a safe speed
Thanks for the advice

this is the dude on Eatons "how to shift..." videos.
Does a low gear mean low speed or is it a certain lever you pull ? I don’t know anything
this is vintage 780p ?
just install water tank & water pump then conect the hose direct to tyre.. it will be cooling the brake drum dude...
Guess what, the new Chinese SinoTrucks have factory equipped water sprayer on the Axles.
Don’t stab your brakes like you stab the lot lizard you’ll catch on fire.
Snub Your Breaks Every Day! Like a BAWSSS
No, I wished I had stayed out west though instead of coming back to the dirty side, maybe still would be..?..
But you can’t stub in a tanker, because of the surge
I recommend and approve the 5, 3 slow down technique. #iamtruckertwotimes
God I searched for this video but found it to late after having some bad experiences. My truck doesn't have Jake brake.

gm16v149 he’s just letting the (un common sense ones) know what to do instead of riding them , never touched mine going down
He also said stay with what you know works for you!
Thanks
This technique applies to more than just trucks
Thank god for the Automatic Trucks
new autos downshift when JB is activated
@@VladGoro25 even if you dont want/need them to.🤦♂️
Who is watching this in 2020?! 😂😂😂
2021
Sweet shoes......
Thank you
Ahh the 90s
Let me guest low gear 2 and 3 gear. Down hill
Honestly about 7 or 8 gear 35 45 mhp.
so they know more than 30 or 40 yrs experience?
This guy has NEVER drove truck. if you go down 7% grade for 14 miles snubbing your brakes you will run out of brakes. Best rule is use the gear that you don't have to touch your brakes and never turn it loose until you see the bottom.
Absolutely agree! Should do that on any grade tho.
agree with you. if you snub brakes to often on downhill, then you are in high gear.
How come you didn't mention Jake brakes?
He did
He did,engine brakes
don't used trailer brakes, " is the fastest way to smoked them " lol lol lol
Hay
Stabbraking is BS I've never used this and never had any problems I started in 1973 without a Jake light steady pressure in the right gear and they work fine I tried that stab braking BS it sucked I drove over 43+ years hauled cattle out of steep hills then moved on to everything else ..
just install the water tank & water pump.. easy
uhhhh you do know the the countries fleets are mandated with speed limited by politicians taht cant drive a 4 wheeler...?
hEY BUDDY! sAN dIEGO SAYS HI!!
This video would never be published today. He said "Retard" on several occasions. Whahhhh
Gotta laugh he moves his foot back to the go pedal geeez
Buena informacion.
No entiendo ni wea pero buen video
Who wears dress shoes when driving a truck?
To be honest there are some guys out there driving in dress shirts and ties. Not many but there are a few. Its called looking good and feeling good.
A corporate shill, that's who
I'm not a fan of the dress shoes but it's better than those guys I see driving wearing shorts and sandals. Usually with the left foot up on the dash
I do not understand....
This was hysterically hillarious 😂😂😂

What are you referring to?
get a real truck... or you might as well drive a toyota prius
.
Don't like the sound of the truck, deflate those tires and the vehicle will pause.
OK so what you’re telling me is to use the highest gear possible and ride my brakes the entire way down the hill OK got it

That is so wrong... when you release the brakes you give them time to cool. If you keep pressure on them, they have no time to cool.
