One of the best pieces of advice I ever heard was “You can go down a hill too slow as many times as you want. You can only go down a hill too fast, once.” Great video man.

True words. I’ve come off a strip job down a dozer road loaded with 40 ton of blue gem coal and started to rain, I had my door open in 2nd full Jake. I was in a 75’ DM800 Mack. That was the day I learned it wasn’t all fun and showing off, you can get killed real quick.

When I drove down the Malahat, I would turn the A/C on and shift into 3rd. The entire way down, I would only have to lightly tap the brake once. So it definitely works!

We go to South Dakota for vacation every other year and when we go up and down in the hills my parents always told me just to drop the vehicle down a few gears, we have a expedition with the middle column shifter so it’s easy to down shift. My dad got a new exhaust with turbo tubes in his 1996 Chevy truck so I want to take it up there so when you go down a hill I can downshift a gear and let the exhaust crackle😂😂. There’s got a reason why most mechanic shops up there only specialize in brakes😂

@@amerahstevens5864 exactly like the video explained. Use as much retarding force as possible without using your primary brakes. Anticipate going into that steep grade. I'm not a trucker by trade. Just listened to the things that my father used to say. I'm a railroader so I can kinda see the theory. We use dynamic brakes and the engineer will KNOW his territory and will anticipate hills/curves etc. Know the condition of your equipment and its limitations.

just got my CDL not too long ago and in my first week I had to haul 76,000 lbs through a short mountain pass in Arkansas, which included 3 miles of 11% down grade. I was nervous, but I followed the road signs and kept it at 20mph and made it down safely. When I got to the other 11% grade one of the other trucks was flying down with smoking brakes.

One of the scariest roads I ever drove a heavy truck on was the road from Ioannina to Igoumeitsa in Greece..fearsome steep that goes on forever coming down a mountain with a number of double bends and traffic travelling uphill with hardly any room to spare. All loaded trucks are doing 15mph max, so little airflow to the brakes.
A very busy road at night, even more dangerous..nice to see how you cope with things in the US, and the big difference in vehicles compared to Europe. Regards
