Don't get in a rush, flustered or pay. Attention to any negative comments. Don't imagine what people are thinking. Just get it in the hole w/o hitting anything. You get as many tries and get outs as you need. Super trucker forgets he was there too.

So I'm a FedEx yard jockey and you do explain it very well. Another good tip is to glare at the tires in the trailer. Once they pass the corner of the trailer you lesson your chances of hitting the left trailer and just need to worry about the the right side hitting the trailer to your right but very good teaching my brother.

I think I learned something watching this. I've been backing regular trailers ("bumper-pull") for decades, but I recently switched from a travel trailer to a 5th wheel RV. As soon as I put it into reverse, it threw me a curve ball and I knew I had to watch the experts, so here I am.

Remember a few things, your pivot point is your trailer tandems, your steer point for the trailer is your kingpin. To make your trailer turn right, your kingpin is going to go left. Try to get your tow vehicle and trailer as straight into the "box" as soon as possible, and use small corrections. Turn away from the problem. You can use a couple of steering wheel tricks. One is, put your hand at the six o'clock position. Now, you know to turn your hand the way you want your trailer to turn (but this only works in straight line backing, and will become detrimental if there's too much offset). Or you can put your left and right hand at the bottom of the steering wheel, if you want your trailer to go left, turn clockwise with your left hand, to go right turn counterclockwise with your right. But as other has said, take your time and don't hesitate to get out and look if you think you're getting close to hitting something.

Thats how i back everytime , U are explaining it the most simple way : Looking at ur tires , jacking it first/straightening the front/chasing the trailer , always looking at how much space is left on ur blind side and ur proximity to left trailer , this way u can fit this truck anywhere possible.

Very good! Beautiful sunny day! Perfect conditions
Now lets try this at 1:00 am.
You're tired after having driven 10 hours.
It's dark. It's raining. Your mirrors are dirty and the truckstop lights glare on your dirty mirrors.
And you've only got 6" on either side
And there is 6 trucks waiting while you screw around having to G. O. A. L.
If you can then get it in there is a good driver😁😎

  • @tribejudah9665

I wish my trainer was as thorough as you. Can't tell you how many times my trainer told me to just leave trailer crooked. Just felt tacky to me. Even had security tell us we needed to readjust trailer before we left facility. Embarrassing! Failed my test backing because he always would rather find a straight back for parking to avoid having to teach me. I always wanted to challenge myself but he was too busy to teach. So now having to watch UA-cam until I can get another local Trainer. A week without pay while I wait!
New truckers always ask your trainer to actually breakdown what you're doing wrong and ask for 90 degree backs even if you have enough room to straight back.

I have had the experience of JC Penny, Louisville KY(Airport location) and US Express docks in Coraopolis PA(Pittsburgh Airport) that would make ideal rookie training docks....from coast to coast they are among the top 50 roughest docks for a rookie to master....Not to mention the Philadelphia Mint(Hint: tuck the tandems up tight)(imagine this, 2 rookies on their 1st run together, much fun and lots of laughs for the Mint guards)....

    • @frankfriel1511

The Cicero BNSF yard in Chicago has the tightest lanes I've ever seen. If you can back successfully every time there, you're a rare breed of a truck driver. There is often less than a trailer's length width in the lane, and the spots are so small there's maybe 2 feet maximum between trailers. So, your setup must be perfect, and if you do anticipate needing to pull forward, you better already be half way in the box before you do, otherwise, your just going to have to pull out and reset. I've often had less than a couple of inches space between my tractor and the trailers in front of my spot while turning. And the yard jocks there are the worst.

Last night had a similar situation, but the problem I had was the swing doors had to be open bc I was backing into a dock door and it literally ate the little space I had between the other two 52 fters. I tried 3 different times, but couldn't. Had to call dispatch and ask if I could back it into a different door (two doors down). Got the approval and backed it in on the first try!
Moral of the story: Sometimes you will not be able to fit these trailers in a door dispatch wants them in. The most important thing is not to hit anything, and if that means going a few doors down then so be it

Did you move your tandems up just to make the backing easier into this spot or were they already up to facilitate the weight of your load

In my career I've had tunnel docks where I've had to back off a street at a 90 degree angle, I've also had a stop in Macon that was pretty tight but watching these videos helps me to sharpen up my skills up but that's awesome how you set-up.

Junior i see you on that initial back up.. wipe that shit lol! but im a new spotter driver at my job, and ive gotten decent, only been at it two weeks. as you know these trucks can turn sharper, but i struggle with my setup alot. having to circle back around a ton of times, or adjust in spaces where i may not have the room usually to pull off said adjustment. my favor of you is, can you teach the art of the setup. especially on warehouse premises, like when do you know when to come out of a turn, when do you cut it, etc etc

For those who say it's not tight. Are you always a jerk or is the exception? Maybe it's not to you and me today, but is was at one time when we were new. You need to spend more time with the "lot lizards" and less attacking others. What is it like to be God and perfect?

Once you understand coasting when backing, you can almost put it anywhere. The same way you pull out is the same way you back. Remember that concept.

Forgive the dumb question.. you mentioned the "angled" parking space. Didn't that angle actually make the parking easier? I did appreciatr the trailer in front of you, and you accomplishing that with the tandems to the front. I juzt tho7ght a 90 degree straight space would be harder. Thanks for the great viceo.

You can do it. I'm a veteran truck driver. It comes with experience. You eventually will know what you can and can't do with your truck and know the limits. All truck drivers out there was a beginner at one time or another no matter how long they been driving. I don't like seeing veteran drivers giving rookies a hard time. They forget they were there once and need to remember they wasn't the best either at one time. They had to learn too. I try to help the new drivers i encounter all i can and give them advice that will help them down the road. No driver woke up one day and decided to be a truck driver and instantly was the best. Any veterans out there like myself out there reading this... Have patience with the rookies. We were in their shoes once.
