When I was at school in the 90's, my classmates and I were always led to believe that wood word class was for the dunce. I really loved it, but stayed away and followed a different path, many different paths. Yet, each and every one I hated. I eventually went onto finance, then law and it was always a struggle. I live in China now working for a international law firm. I'm in my early 40's and I've had enough. Next September, once I've put some money behind me, I'm moving back home to learn your craft. I hope the fact that I've lost so much time 'ticking other peoples boxes' won't prevent me from being able to support myself by simply doing something I know I will absolutely love doing. I've just discovered your channel and it's an inspiration man! It really is.
Happened to me too with the same upbringing.. I'm in the process of building a work shop in my backyard. 33 years old. I find so much peace working on something. No where near this detailed and skilled though

I'm over 60 and have been a weekend woodworker on and off for a fairly long time. Every time I see something like this it gives me the inspiration to try and get better tomorrow. I don't have nearly the skill level (or the equipment) to build something like this but it makes me happy to see that someone does!

I see a lot of similarities in our woodworking journey. I started fine woodworking at 13. I started my own company at 19. Now I'm 31, and woodworking has been my sole income for 4 years. It's tough getting people to fork out large amounts of money when you are young, but when you start putting out things like this that solidify your skill in people's eyes, it really helps. I went the contractor route. Now 90% of my income is fine custom cabinetry. I am a C6 contractor. Half of my work is insurance related, and half is private clients. But you're right. You gotta work your butt off and sacrifice a ton when you start a business young.... Watching your videos makes me want to start making UA-cam videos again! Lol.

I appreciate such a thoughtful message. Getting these comments is validating amd helps ensure that I’m on the right path. In terms of the veneer choice.. that’s a good question. It would have been much easier to do it the traditional way. My goal is it’s this method was to have continuous grain when the door was shut. Even the thinnest table saw blades subtract from the grain pattern which leaves steps in the grain pattern.

Any woodworking UA-camr can get on here and give tips, tricks, and tutorials (and those videos are certainly important and have their place) but it’s entirely different thing to inspire people to reach deep inside, find their own unique spirit of creativity, and passionately strive to share that with the world to the best of their ability. I’ve watched a lot of woodworking UA-camrs and thus far I’ve found that only you and the Samurai Carpenter, despite your styles being completely different, have that rare ability to inspire people to reach to create art with their projects. Just bought my first table saw last week, its a super cheap one from Parkside, but can't afford a better one. Even so, man does it save a lot of time. Planning a custom table expansion with t-tracks for it at the moment, so I can cut bigger stuff on it. Love how precise you are, amazing work.

I really loved watching you make this piece. It's fantastic and I like that you showed the process, warts and all. It inspires me. Also, I cannot begin to tell you how nice it is to see someone doing wood working instead of making resin molds for river tables all the time. (Just sayin'.) I really enjoy your videos and wish I lived closer so I could take your classes.

Being an early subscriber, feels like I've kinda followed along in this journey of yours,reminding me of an ancient Greek poem, "Ithaka".. Seeing how an artist evolves through videos is one thing, but watching you keep that motivation and that no-holds-barred commitment to the craft is something else, dear Will. This piece is what you're built to create honestly. Humble and sophisticated, but also wildly screaming the sacrifice, sweat and tears needed to imagine, design and sculpt such a marvel.
