I knew Gabor and some of the guys in his band. He was a bit of a troubled soul, but a terrific musician. At his peak, he was one of the top talents in Canada. A shame his impact wasn't larger and longer lasting.
Some of the best moments of being a kid in the early 80s was listening to CFNY in the night time and leaving my tape recorder in Record mode to tape a few hours of music between midnight and 4am. A lot of cool music was played at that time.
Worked the night shift at the Soya mills in Toronto and CFNY got me through each night. Then Pete snd Geets came on after the night show and were funny. Felt lucky we had a radio station like that to listen too. They played my kind of music that you wouldn’t hear anywhere else.
Agreed! God I miss CFNY - the "real" CFNY. The music, the mood, the many unique personalities, the roadshows. What a great "family" it was for a while.
I was the drama spoken word producer at our university radio station and we got all the new and strange stuff every month and we played it. BB Gabor's record came in and we thought, this is ground breaking. Musically. We weren't sure culturally how far it would go. But we were right, his sound went everywhere. Poor guy, he new made the dollars from his ground breaking work. This Smiths had huge hits based on his innovations.
My friend and I saw him open for the Boomtown Rats at York University. He was fantastic! He blew the place away. I bought his album the next day. Played it so much, I had to replace it 2 months later. 34 years later and his music still holds up.
Hey, you're welcome! Gabor wrote some great songs, as well as being an excellent singer and guitarist. I heard some of the material that was produced by Todd Rundgren for a third album, and it was really good too.
I saw BB on several occasions in Toronto and Heatwave in 1980. Actually, he opened for the Boomtown Rats in the gym at Seneca College. That was an amazing show. When I heard of his passing I felt like I'd been kicked in the stomach. RIP BB.
I remember picking my books up for grade 9 and heard them playing this album. I thought it was a sign fot a great time in high-school! I was wrong a couple of people just had good taste in music.
My Friends and I use to check out every local show he performed back in the 80's. He always put on a great performance and was a talented musician. RIP Gabor Hegedus.
I had a chance to hang out a few times with Dave Stone and Gabor in a North Vancouver studio while they were recording demos for a third album in 1984. It was really impressive watching those two talented guys at work. Later on a couple of my friends went along with them to Todd Rundgren's studio in New York state where the final tracks were recorded. Sadly, the album was never released.
Can't help thinking that was the backyard recording gem, Studio 264. Lived in the house for a while in the early 80's, and met BB in the kitchen and smoked with him. Super nice and gracious fellow, and I was severely bummed when I learned he'd died.
CFNY was an excellent station back then. I got introduced to a lot of great artists in different genres through that show that I think was called "eclectic vision". I used to tape stuff off of there as well on my old reel to reel.

I found the dual cd with girls of the future it's sounds amazing ! Soo great to hear these songs again I owned the lp , I hope his lost lp will be re,eased one day !
Thanks for uploading this. It's been ages since I've heard this record. BB Gabor was a wonderful writer and performer. Saw him at a club in Vancouver in 1980. Amazing.
@ripporter I don't think it was ever released, but that sounds like it could be it. I knew Gabor in '85 and heard the unmastered tracks when he got back from Rundgren's Bearsville studios. All I remember is one song with the lyric "They say that love's ephemeral, I don't mind. Oooh, that may be true, ...but I'll still take love, ...anytime." He also had a recording of The Tubes doing one of his songs. They had been doing sessions at Bearsville at the time he was there.
Yes. My recollection is that it was like listening to a group of John Peels - quite amazing ... Tuvan throat singing, Albert Ayler and new wave all together. Wasn't Larry LeBlanc there?
My dad texted me early this morning, outta the blue, saying he’d finally remembered the song and artist that had been running through his head “like a kamikaze” for 35 years, and here I am looking forward to a great revelation in 2047.
Cheers for the info. I will listen tomorrow night with some beer and some smoke..What caught my ear with Dave Marsden was when he played a Led Zeppelin song followed by "Hanoi annoys me" by Fashion. Live long and prosper.
I wonder if Jason Falkner listened to BB. There are so many bits of this tune that are right out of the Falkner playbook, I would not be surprised if Jason was influenced by BB.
@xxooliver You mean "Celtic Cross" on the compilation "Driving in the Rain:3 AM - Songs to Get Lost With" that Ralph Alfonso remastered? It's really beautiful - Ralph said that he wasn't sure if it was one that Rundgren produced - although it was on a cassette tape that B.B. Gabor's widow had that had that was marked "Produced by Todd Rundgren".
I think you are thinking of The Eclectic Spirit with Brad McNally. He even produced a few video versions of the show for Rogers community channel back in the day. Sadly I lived outside Toronto at the time and never got a chance to see them. I sure wish they would pop up online some where.
@stingerbarton I'd like to upload all the songs at a higher bit rate but I'm not sure if it's converting them to video that reduces the audio quality, or the way I uploaded them to youtube. I will include the ones I missed for sure.
@xxooliver I'm not sure if I can find it! My CDs are all over the place - you can go to cdbaby and download it for 99 cents - search for Driving in The Rain 3 AM
@xxooliver Wow, you might be the only one to have heard them - I don't know if Celtic Cross was the only thing that was in good enough condition to remaster from the cassette, given that cassette tape can deteriorate quite a bit over the years! Do you know what became of the reel-to-reel tapes from the studio?
@ripporter I have no idea about the tapes. All I heard was the cassette Gabor brought back out west just after the sessions when he played it for some of his friends. It could be the same one his widow had. I'd like to hear "Celtic Cross". Any chance of uploading a copy?
Where are Dave Marsden and the live Earl Jive? 'Ny's my station... and the punk girl's tits. Half-remembered lyrics from half-remembered songs. CFNY in 79-80 kicked Q107's ass. Does Queen St. west still have cool bars? The Horseshoe, the Beverley and the rest.

All night Andre?
Consider yourself high-fived, my friend.
YES! I was in Agincourt doing the same thing.
Worked the night shift at the Soya mills in Toronto and CFNY got me through each night. Then Pete snd Geets came on after the night show and were funny. Felt lucky we had a radio station like that to listen too. They played my kind of music that you wouldn’t hear anywhere else.

Toronto had a great music scene back in the late seventys and early eightys
My friend and I saw him open for the Boomtown Rats at York University. He was fantastic! He blew the place away. I bought his album the next day. Played it so much, I had to replace it 2 months later. 34 years later and his music still holds up.
I was at that concert...he was great!!
I was there. Age 16. I believe it was at Seneca college though, not York. I lived near there and walked to it. Great show.
Rock on
I was at that show too, fantastic concert from beginning to end.
Love this song. Sounds like an "XTC" song but with a Canadian flare. Great tune!!!
What the hell would a radio producer/former drug technician know about music? Pass the Dilaudid.
True

Saw him ,them, in Dartmouth N.S. 82 ish.astounding show. I'm sure the drummer was Bucky Berger ,can't confirm. The band was super tight.
Must have been at "Lucifer's".
@@fredparker1734 that ring a bell. Upstairs, the building changed several times and is now gone.
@@hcmaclean777 That's it...It was Lucifers,for several years,in the 80's,and,eventually morphed into The Crazy Horse.
@@hcmaclean777 Back at that time,it MAY have, even, still been called The Matador, before the name changed, half a dozen times.
The best drummer that ever played with Gabor was Mike Sloski. Fabulous player.

Wow-I checked a few times and couldn't find this track or any of the others from this LP--thank you! This is a classic 80s Canadian LP.
I knew BB Gabor personally, I met him a few times at El Mocambo and Grossman's, he died several years ago. Jo Magyar Ember.....
I found the dual cd with girls of the future it's sounds amazing ! Soo great to hear these songs again I owned the lp , I hope his lost lp will be re,eased one day !
It was released in 2016, if you look it up on UA-cam you can find it
80's chom fm played this in Montreal...loved it, still do.
RIP B B Gabor.
Big thank you for posting this...any other cool songs.

I’ve listened to I’ll take love!! It’s such a good great song!
Wow!!!! I remember CFNY playing this back then. NYET NYET Soviet too! Now I have to look up Art Bergman.
My boss 's father lol
You won't regret it

heard them at Peter Clark Hall in 1980
I was looking for this about 1 year ago and couldn't find it. Thanks for posting. A great old track from the New Wave days or yore.
Cheers for the info. I will listen tomorrow night with some beer and some smoke..What caught my ear with Dave Marsden was when he played a Led Zeppelin song followed by "Hanoi annoys me" by Fashion. Live long and prosper.

The Eclectic Spirit was a phenomenal show. Still remember it vividly and am friends with Brad McNally who is now in Australia.

@xxooliver that does mean that the quality is stuck at the crappy mono track that youtube puts out in it's 240p videos

Dead. He died January 1990

Those are lyrics to “Working on the Radio”, a song composed by and played by CFNY staff members
