In some comments here, people are mistaken for virtual sound and virtual transmissions.
People seem to think of it as just a gimmick for fun or imitation. I used to drive the circuit often. Surprisingly, people don't feel speed with their senses. I just feel the gravity of acceleration and deceleration.
So you can feel the speed sensibly with the sound of the engine. In order to drive the circuit properly, such various sensory information must be felt. That's why the manufacturer put it as an option.
Even virtual sound was created out of necessity. It's not just a gimmick.

You get used to the silence after a little while. I've tracked my EV6GT quite a few times and do autocross with it pretty regularly. You hear and feel the tires more, you get to know where the friction brakes take over from the regenerative braking, and can anticipate the weight transfer better, all without having to worry about what gear you're in, where your revs are, or how much power is available coming out of a corner; there's always plenty! No regrets selling the BRZ for it.

Hyundai is doing highly creative stuff these days. Reminds me of the domestics back in the 1960s, really neat and exciting work by engineers who love cars.
Take the Elantra N. That was a real eye-opener. But now they are innovating in the SUV and electric spaces, too.

but question: is their creativity really practical? isn't changing torque profiles to simulate gear changes wearing the thing down prematurely? what that does is artificially making mechanic shocks on the, well, not transmission but rather bogies? perhaps? if you do "change gears" everyday in it, in a span of don't know perhaps 5-10 years? it'll break down. Of course, a CVT does fake shift as well but those "shifts" are gentle and don't create any shocks. Cars should last at least 30 years if not even 50, if we scrap cars after only like 2-5 years that's a really big waste, of money, of resources, of everything, i know consumerism and stuff but still, throwing money out the window is a waste.
Another thing is comfort, I daily drive a manual and I've developed my own technique of shifting in such a manner gear shifts are not felt at all, while I drive a manual smoothly with no jerking on gear shifts you people with electric cars that can provide the smoothest and quietest ride ever choose instead to be jerked back and forth by quote "gear shifts" and feel like a potato in a truck basically, that's backwards, really

You are absolutely correct. In performance driving, managing the weight or the rotation of the car (in addition to speed and acceleration) is critical. The best way to manage weight is by being able to quickly manipulate G forces and you do that with gear shifts. Slam the gears at the right time and it’s quicker than micromanaging speed with just throttle control. What Hyundai has done is to take this racing concept of gearing and digitize a DCT program for electric motors. In the Ioniq 5 N you can slam it into a regen gear (a torque band) using the left/right paddle shifters (0.6G at the highest in the Ioniq) similar to downshifting/upshifting. And shift changes, whether digitally in electric motors or mechanically with multiple gearing, when amplified with sound registers much quicker in the brain.
I would love to see a UA-camr demonstrate how you attack a track turn with DCT gear shifts versus a single-speed automatic transmission and you’ll get the idea. So yeah, electric cars have always had the potential for regen and torque shifting. It took Hyundai to make it work with the Ioniq 5 N synthesizing a DCT feel and RPM feedback and it’s what performance track drivers have been waiting for. Electric cars will never be the same. You can bet BMW and Audi are back on the drawing board.

7:16 I think the forward/backwards torque selector would be more accurately described as torque limiter. The 50%/50% setting means 100% of the electric motor power for both motors. When you set it to 40%/60% what really happens is that rear motors still get 100% torque but front motors are limited so that overall balance is now 40%/60%. It cannot magically make more power from the same motor unlike what would happen with ICE engine with cardan axle where any leftover from the front would be transferred to back.

  • @MikkoRantalainen
    @MikkoRantalainen Місяць тому

The gear emulation simply cuts some of the torque for short time periods and plays audio from the speakers. If you want maximum performance, you don't want such cuts in the torque curve. It's a fun gimmick feature nonetheless. I think the idea of audio feedback is great but I'd rather have audio feedback that tells me how close to max torque the system currently is, not the RPM information. Similarly, I'd like to have audio feedback telling how close to max regen the system currently is. That would tell me that if I want to decelerate more rapidly, I have to go to breaks instead of just lifting the accelerator pedal.

My view is different. I disagree that there's a need to invest in specifically making EVs weigh as much of ICE performance cars.
I actually think car companies should put their money toward something completely different. I think that car companies should double down on their push for EVs, but establish a framework for buying used battery packs from EV and plug-in hybrid owners, then use those batteries as stationary storage.
To your point, yes, EVs are heavy. But the energy consumed per km/mile of an EV compared to a gasoline car is so little, I just don't agree with you that the weight argument is a real problem.
The cost of DC fast charging 'is' a problem. People are paying demand charges so high, that it costs almost as much to charge DC as it would otherwise cost to full up with gas. Stationary storage systems consisting of used battery packs should be used as a shock absorber for charging stations. There's plenty of money to be made by taking massive bite out of the demand charge users are currently paying at DC fast charging stations, and also additional revenue from energy arbitrage.

You are a very well informed reasonable individual. So why even mention weight when multiple evs are exactly the same weights as their most common ice equivelant? Example tesla m3 vs bmw m3, 3,600-4,000# for both depending on the options&trim selected.
A ford Lightning platinum vs a trx vs ct or rivian r1t dual motor all of them weigh 6,600-6,800# all are awd crew cab trucks with short beds.
A model X weighs less than most premium segment full size 4wd ice suvs it competes against. 5,100-5,300#
The nio et7 we lion semi solid 150kwh pack is 576kg pack weight and enables a real world range of 650+miles.
Weighing just 44# more than the same sized catl nmc chemistry 100kwh pack which can only go about 425 miles.
Semi solid state is here right NOW in multiple Chinese evs enabling sedans to have 130-150kwh pack's vs the current 90-110kwh sedan pack's.
Without significantly increasing the total pack weights. Its just more expensive atm&low volume production to start.
Which means a we lion 100kwh pack would prob weigh 400-500# LESS than a similar 100kwh nmc pack weighs. As the energy density at pack level per their claims is a 44% improvement.
Which would drop say a base model s lr awd 100kwh down to 4,000# or you know 300# LESS than a stock dodge charger hellcat weighs.
Heck a widebody hellcat with full fuel&fluids weighs the exact same as a model S lr does right now!
Both 4dr American built, full size seats 5 adult sedans. Both even cost a similar amount 70-100k+
A model 3 perf with semi solid state cells would drop down to 3,600-3,700# and a sr could get under 3,500# again.
A base ecoboost mustang weighs over 3,500 with fuel&fluids. Gt 5.0s weigh 3,800-4,000#+now. So weight isn't what some claim it is.
A Chevy bolt also weighs within 80-100# of a loaded fueled Ford focus, and both are 5 Dr American made hatches.
The model Y has Honda pilot levels of space but weighs right in between the pilot&rav4 hybrid awd ice model's at 4,100-4,300# 😎

Good question. As a performance car enthusiast and producer of this show, I feel it important to track the weight of each car presented. Why? What gets measured, gets done. What we are finding after driving hundreds of these, weight deltas vary greatly as we progress into EV deployment. We are consistently seeing about 1,000 pounds on most cars, however some are making strides in closing that gap such as BMW and Hyundai. Lucid also gets an honorable mention but the cost is . . . the cost. Can't really speak to the Chinese market because they are not on offer here and to be very frank, Western OEMs are held to a higher standard of engineering, reliability and performance. That will not change should they make inroads into North America.

Extreme regenerative braking on lift off biased towards the front axil would assist weight transfer allowing for a controlled turn in. Optimized cooling and warming of the batteries in the art of power delivery for a variety of types of use cases is brilliant. Apparently the custom three selectable level suspension is still under wraps. My wish list is to make universal the heating/cooling technology and manual preconditioning across the line up. I want to arrive still preconditioning at 5% to a charger because it charges faster from 5% to 19% where it currently turns off than 19% to 33%. Give us a selectable arrival percentage and preconditioning percentage cut off @hyundai. You can warn us if you think we miscalculated suggesting to turn off preconditioning. Current onboard navigation is too conservative with too high a % arrival turning a three charging trip in to four or five if I followed navigating guidance. Let’s add evelation in to the the navigation and a more graphical interface with charger selection. Any charging selection would be a start with realtime charger rating and availability. Crowd source your own vehicle charging data live as low hanging fruit. Then when the charging curve drops somewhere north of 80% SOC to below 100kW there should be no energy needed to cool the pack after unplugging therefore maximizing energy for motion. All while using what ever navigation I choose or even without connection subscriptions. A manual preconditioning button is like a go pedal cover Tesla. It should stay in place regardless. #2023IONIQ5Owner 🤨

The fake gears are actually slower than the pure EV experience; they're just there to trick recalcitrant EV-haters into "feeling" the power that is already there by taking bits of it away in a manner they expect to feel. The emulated shifting is all software that removes available power to simulate a gear box and RPM-based power bands. The torque vectoring and e-LSD work better without the simulated combustion engine imperfections. Also, it may be a tall EV, but all the weight is much lower than on any traditional car.

I don’t know how anyone thinking a car that’s powered by highly toxic and volatile chemicals was going to be better than the “toxic ICE vehicles” at least ICE fires can be easily extinguished and properly recycled which you can not do with an EV. What were we going to do with 500k toxic battery disposals annually. Americans are so naive

The batteries will ultimately be recycled. Thr vast majority of the battery can be reused.

Consider the profound irony. A more expensive car to simulate what already exists which is a more convenient car to own powered by gasoline. Even though this car reviewed is faster, lets pick a car like an Elantra N or Civic Type R at less than $50K as a basis for comparison.
But there is much more. The architecture of this car is still electric and with that comes all the aversion to owning an electric car from less range, to where to charge, added weight you mention, but biggest elephant in the room? The battery that degrades over time and what kind of depreciated hunk of metal you are left with after say 8 years. This is a throwaway $70K car when the battery needs replacement because of the dramatic depreciation of electric cars including Tesla's.
Let's say you don't want to own it but lease it and not worry about the uber expensive 70+ KW/hr battery needing to be replaced with much higher cost than an engine replacement in a gas car that isn't a foregone conclusion in 8 years. Who in their right mind wants to lease a car that it harder to charge, takes longer to charge and has less range than a gas car? What is the point?
Truth is, EV's are dumb. Lots of dumb Americans, some of whom have bought them and regretted doing so.
As an automotive engineer, I appreciate your review and discussion about this maybe first foray into 'simulating' a performance gas car in an EV. It is at its best a feat of engineering and at its worse a joke and sad commentary on people that would consider one...lol.

@@TimothySims-it5lf I just hope a sucker like you buys an EV of any ilk. That is called poetic justice.
