This effeminate masked weirdo just put Harmony Corruption on C list which might have been ok if he had just said I’m a weirdo with strange tastes but I’m obligated to state and recognize that Harmony Corruption was a ground braking album that redefined and created the blueprint for modern brutal death metal in 1990! Newbies
Agreed. However, this is the one album from Scott Burns that he did not turn into an absolute banger production wise. The production is too treble heavy and doesn't have the low end on the drums that Burns usually delivered.
My favorite era of Napalm Death is the early 90s. Harmony Corruption and Utopia Banished are S tier albums imo. The band were never quite the same without Jesse Pintado RIP.
Napalm will forever be one of my favourite bands. And dig this ranking dude, because I am firm believer that this current line up of ND and basically everything from enemy of the music business to date is beyond phenomenal. ND have seriously found there sound, and mastered it over the last couple of decades. I love the first few records, but there is a savagery and ferocity on the later material that is just unmatched.
I absolutely LOVE Fear, Emptiness, Despair because like you said it is highly re-listenable and to me it is one of the quintessential 90's albums to listen too. This one and Demolition Hammer's Epidemic of Violence are high up there for me.
Your C tier is pretty much my A tier. I appreciate your love for the very recent albums, though. Similar trajectory to Voivod in some ways - elder statesmen having overcome that mid-career slump.
I love when Napalm Death embrace their experimental sound!! "Inside The Torn Apart" is one of my favorite among their discography and "Contemptuous", "Invigorating Clutch", "Contagion", "Amoral", "Jois De Ne Pas Vivre" and "A Bellyful Of Salt And Spleen" are among my favorites!!
Fuck yeah, fear emptiness despair was a life changing album for me. Despite its commercial push, mortal combat introduced me to napalm death and I’ve been a lifelong fan since.
Came in like most because I was interested in Grindcore and really dug the first two, I like their 90-94 stuff and 96/97/98 isn't that bad - especially Words has some killer stuff. Everything since 2000 has been exceptional, but with Throes and Resentment they put out their best material to date. I highly anticipated it because they talked about it since 2017 or so and it delivered and then some. One of the best Metal albums of the decade so far.
%100 agree with Throes of Joy being on the top. Seriously ND really topped it with that album. Lots of great post-punk and metallic hardcore influence and it's most yet melodic
That stretch from ‘Enemies of the music business’ through ‘smear campaign’ was unrivaled. Was everything I love about Napalm Death firing on all cylinders. They recaptured it a bit on apex predator.
I love Scum and I listen this album a lot of time. Less with the second and a bit of Utopia Banished. Thanks for your tier list for my recap of the discography.😊❤
Enemy is and will always be my favorite ND album. You love to put my favorite albums at C level. That is the great thing about metal. Something for everyone!
Love Napalm Death. Still going really strong today. I am so excited to listen to the new one once it comes out. S: Harmony Corruption, Utopia Banished, Utilitarian A: Inside the Torn Apart, Enemy of the Music Business, Apex Predator-Easy Meat, Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism B: From Enslavement to Obliteration, Fear Emptiness Despair, Smear Campaign, Time waits for no Slave C: Scum, Order of the Leach, The Code is Red… long live the Code D: Diatribes, Words from the Exit Wound
I started to catch back ND after running into their Contagion videoclip. I might haven't listened to them probably for decades, now I am amazed again by them, especially by Throes. Their evolution in a positive way is amazing. So catchy, so noisy, so deep, so experimental. Blew my mind.
Terms like "legends" and "greats" get thrown around in metal, but without a doubt, Napalm Death is a legendary band. In the top tier of the pantheon of greats. Pioneers, consistent discography, stayed true to an uncompromising sound. Sure they missed the mark occasionally but who doesn't make a few mistakes over such a lengthy career, but in general, just brilliant.
Amazing band. Really enjoying the comments here. There are people who think Fear, Emptiness, Despair is their best (like me), people who think it's their worst (like Shane Embury apparently), people who only like ND for the lyrics (!), and everything in between. I saw them in 2001 and they were the elder statesmen of extreme metal back then, but even that was 23 years ago! Can't believe they're still going strong, still refusing to get stuck in a rut, and still refusing to compromise in intensity.
Great ranking, here's how I rank them all. 16. Diatribes 15. Words from the Exit Wound 14. Inside the Torn Apart 13. Scum 12. From Enslavement to Obliteration 11. Order of the Leech 10. Fear, Emptiness, Despair 9. Enemy of the Music Business 8. Utilitarian 7. The Code is Red...Long Live the Code 6. Throes of Joy in the Jaw of Defeatism 5. Harmony Corruption 4. Time Waits for No Slave 3. Apex Predator - Easy Meat 2. Smear Campaign 1. Utopia Banished
Napalm Death has a parallel to Killing Joke in that they're getting better with age. I do enjoy Barney's voice the most in the 90s up to "Enemy of the Music Business" though! He sounds the most vicious there. That's not to say that his voice isn't still rad--it's just taken on more punk characteristics. I think their recent album has a more punk influence to it, too...with some Killing Joke thrown in.
Solid ranking. The only one that made me say WTF is Fear, Emptiness, Despair. That record would be a low C for me. Throes Of Joy shocked the HELL outta me!! Just an incredible record!!!
Napalm Death is definitely one of those rare instances where the band's later output is better than the early stuff. Ixm with you, I'm way more of a fan of the stuff since 2000 over the early grind and death stuff they did.
Just quite recently gotten into Napalm Death. I already think their 2000s and 2010s albums are their best pieces of work. They really got better as they went on
Honestly, the Mentally Murdered EP is my favorite output by Napalm Death (probably because it sounds like early Carcass) and I stopped following them after Harmony Corruption because I didn't dig the production or Barney's vocals. One of the punk magazines I read called them "Death Metal All-Stars" after that and I just gave up on them. Maybe I missed out. Oh well.
Why is the new EP on here and non of the others are? There best releases are EPs with mentally murdered my fav followed by Mass appeal. LOVE the new EP
Napalm always seem to work in trilogies with the first release explores a new sound the second refines it more and the third is the pinnical of the sound before they introduce something new on the next and beginning the trilogy over
Nice list. Agree mostly. Time waits for no slave is S for me. Inside the torn apart needs more love. I think it's great. View it as a groove album rather than grind. Would be A for me
I like enemy of the music business ( love the song thanks for nothing etc), words from the exit wound heheh, fear emptiness despair( hung, remain nameless etc), brink of extinction
Your D tier is my A tier. My favorite is Fear... And Apex predator is also on top. Their two Death Metal albums are amazing and have the special Napalm Death touch.
Harmony Corruption: “I enjoy re-listening this one a little more than the previous 2” *C tier* ?? lol Harmony Corruption, Utopia Banished, and Fear Emptiness Despair is their best run of albums IMO. It’s interesting Shane ranks the latter as his least favorite, as I agree with you that it is one of their best albums
For the longest time, Napalm Death were a step too far for me, in terms of extremity and brutality (The Dillinger Escape Plan were occupying that space), but thanks to lists like yours, I've found an appreciation for them, and in particular, their more recent and experimental stuff (like yourself).
Probably Helmet’s Meantime was a bigger influence of Napalm Death than Strap It On…Strap It On flew under the radar when it came out and metalheads really only noticed Helmet when Meantime was released…I could be wrong though…it’s not like I know the guys from Napalm Death personally…i make that guess because I’m old enough to have bought Meantime when it was released and that was the first time I or anyone I knew had heard of Helmet
It's laughable how any Napalm Death album, even Diatribes, can be lableled "sellout" or "alternative" or whatever simply because it was easier to follow than blast beats and complex time signatures all the time. There's this attitude that any time you make something simple or catchy in metal it's always worse, and I just don't think that's the case 100% of the time.
Scum (rough as it may be, it is entirely unique in its energy because of that), The Code is Red and Aprx Predator are my top 3. I find the death metal stuff a bit too generic but I strangely enjoy their groove metal experiments too (Torn Apart is better than I think it is).
Here would be my tier-list for Napalm Death: S - From Enslavement to Obliteration A - Scum, Harmony Corruption, Utopia Banished, The Code Is Red... Long Live the Code, Smear Campaign, Time Waits for No Slave, Utilitarian, Apex Predator - Easy Meat B - Fear Emptiness Despair, Inside the Torn Apart, Enemy of the Music Business, Order of the Leech, Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism C - Diatribes, Words from the Exit Wound
I am actually very close to putting Scum at C tear even, almost don't even enjoy it that much. Being influential is not a "great album that everybody needs to love" make. Much prefer thire more Death metal style, later albums.
@@MetalTrenches agreed, i just believe that an album such as that one, which is the reason (directly or indirectly) a lot of bands sound the way they do 33 years later, should be up there. Of course everyone has their own opinions, but influence is fact. That album has stood the test of time. Have a great one brother! keep grinding
Order of the Leech needs to be at the bottom of "S". Code Smears... should be consdered as it's a double LP of song lefts off. In many cases it should just how good this era was given all the extra tracks that are still as good if better than those on the LPS prior

Harmony Corruption is a masterpiece 🤘
Probably best album
This effeminate masked weirdo just put Harmony Corruption on C list which might have been ok if he had just said I’m a weirdo with strange tastes but I’m obligated to state and recognize that Harmony Corruption was a ground braking album that redefined and created the blueprint for modern brutal death metal in 1990!

My thoughts exactly. I actually enjoy enslavement quite a bit, but to put it over harmony corruption is pure blasphemy lol
Agreed. However, this is the one album from Scott Burns that he did not turn into an absolute banger production wise. The production is too treble heavy and doesn't have the low end on the drums that Burns usually delivered.

I admire your optimism there
Who says that was an accident XD
Your C tier is pretty much my A tier. I appreciate your love for the very recent albums, though. Similar trajectory to Voivod in some ways - elder statesmen having overcome that mid-career slump.
Enemy of the music business. Smashed the fuck out of everything. True return to form.
Enemy of the music business is one of my fav metal albums. The politics, the riffs, the drums, the vocals, everything about it is perfect to me
🤘🏻
That one and Order of the Leech are my favorite ND albums.

🤘🏻
I love Scum and I listen this album a lot of time. Less with the second and a bit of Utopia Banished.

What album do you advice me for begin my research?
Enemy is and will always be my favorite ND album. You love to put my favorite albums at C level. That is the great thing about metal. Something for everyone!
For me, Fear. Emptiness. Despair. is the best death/grind album in the whole world.
As much as I love that album, everything from Enemy Of The Music Business onwards is stellar
even if I don't agree 100% with the ranking... appreciate the analysis A LOT! thank you! respect.
Napalm Death’s entire discography is filled with nothing bot bangers. Even their lowest ranking albums are dynamically sick! Great list my man! 🤘🏽
Awesome video as usual man
Love Napalm Death. Still going really strong today. I am so excited to listen to the new one once it comes out.

Throes Of Joy shocked the HELL outta me!! Just an incredible record!!!
I don't understand why the generalized hate for the groovy era of ND, it is quite entertaining
