1:04:36 this is something so specific that’s always bothered me in many songs and it’s the first time I hear someone actually talk about it. As a guitarist who’s been playing for over twenty years, this comment alone took this video on another level ❤
Also I'd disagree with Rin that they're too old and they should hang it up. They're all only around 51 yo and they're way more aggressive and innovative than most of today's young bands.
Necrotic Nick- While all the excitement they had about renewing their contract with Century Media I think there's plenty left in the tank for Napalm Death.
No other band their age is making shit this consistently intense, and the new one matches up with the intensity of bands in their 20’s. It’s unbelievable and really cool as An example that your edge doesnt have to dull as you get older.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, bro! I've had the pleasure of meeting Shane. Super cool dude and that dude is constantly working on different stuff. I still need to get the most recent Venomous Concept actually.
Top 3 Favorite NAPALM DEATH Albums : 3. Enemy Of The Music Business (2000) 2. From Enslavement To Obliteration (1988) 1. Fear, Emptiness, Despair (1994)
You know what's super-weird? That Meat-Package on the cover of Apex Predator is actually an IPad! Don't know how to interpret that, but that's how it is. :) Great ranking, guys!
Interpretation is pretty simple...YOU are the easy meat - they didn't chose brains randomly - and the media/corporation control your desires and "needs" via all these devices and distractions.
I'm so jealous of you guys that you have each other to do everything metal together. I have no-one that "understands" metal like me. My fiancee likes metal, even has the Sepultura S woven into a tattoo on her thigh but ask her to name the first Sepultura album and she wouldn't have a clue. I wish I had a bunch of friends I could bounce my metal enthusiasm off of. You guys rock 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I have to agree. I come from another music-scene. There are a lot of people liking metal, but most tend to just concentrate on just one certain kind of metal ..I have a diverse taste in metal
Great - I like nearly everything they've put out, but either 'Fear, Emptiness, Despair' or 'Inside the Torn Apart' is at the top and 'Harmony Corruption' (rare misfire, awful production too) is at the bottom. I have a 12 hour shift tomorrow so this will be something to keep me going - thank you, gents...
Unchallenged Hate!!!! Hell yeah! Thanks for pointing out that classic, Nick. I always thought the fact that these bands were so political yet had incoherent vocals was somehow mesmerizing. Paved the way for my love for grind and crust
JAmming Jon´s shirt stole the show. Loved the video, guys. Just some friends united by music, shareing their opinions and feelings about Napalms Death neverending discography, loved every minute. My favorite is Harmony Corruption, fuck it. I even have it on CD. I have Scum longsleeve t-shirt. They have super interesting lyrics too. Cheers.
This was great. Extremely tough band to rank. Here's mine: 1. From Enslavement to Obliteration 2. Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism 3. Harmony Corruption 4. Utopia Banished 5. Time Waits for No Slave 6. Smear Campaign 7. Utilitarian 8. Apex Predator - Easy Meat 9. Enemy of the Music Business 10. Fear, Emptiness, Despair 11. Scum 12. The Code is Red… Long Live the Code 13. Order of the Leech 14. Words from the Exit Wound 15. Inside the Torn Apart Dead last... Diatribes
This truly is 'that curse of being in thrall' . . . rating your favorite ND albums that is! Necrotic Nick & Miller - > Time Waits For No Slave is also my #1 in their discography! Miller - > Throes of Joy was also my #2 album by them! Everything about that record is incredible. It rarely leaves my table some nights!
I ordered that shirt like 4 months ago. I thought it would never get here but then it showed up right before we shot this video, so I thought it was time to release it to the world. They also had a Morbid Angel shirt and a Deicide one. I may or may not have ordered both...
Wow that's gotta be the hardest ranking ever! Personally I enjoy all ND albums to varying degrees, but if I had to pick my fave it'd be Time waits for no Slave.. I think it their most Death Metal influenced material for a long time and the Riffs are super catchy.. Plus Strongarm is one of their best openers for a record yet!
Necrotic Nick- This one was tough as hell but I had a hunch that Time Waits for No Slave would be my #1. It's some of their best songwriting and unbelievably intense form start to finish. That opening stomp on Downbeat Clique is almost too powerful. Weaponized grind!
This was intriguing, I'm basically in the mindset of Miller and Shredlord, grind just isn't my thing and I never really gave Napalm Death the time they deserve. But I've checked out songs from The Code is Red and Time Waits for no slave and those have the potential to be growers in the future. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Dying Fetus and Cattle Decap. catalogs, or even Meshuggah. The tech death(y) bands that have a lot of varied albums.
Dying Fetus and Cattle would be awesome! Especially Cattle. Would love to hear their takes on the earlier era of that band. Even though they don't really cover EPs I'd love to hear them speak on Ten Torments which is literally a completely different band
Inside the Torn Apart and Diatribes were my introduction to ND in the mid 90's and for nearly 15 years I thought that was the extent of their sound. Holy shit was I wrong. I finally gave Enemy of the Music Business a spin and that album just tore right through me. It was utterly ferocious and it wasn't even the best one! The 2000's albums completely changed my view on the band. I have to give you praise for the sheer effort you guys put into these rankings. Once again, you made me check out the new album and goddamn it, you were right to rank it so high.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I'm happy as hell you checked out that new one because it is SO DAMN GOOD! They just continue to you push themselves in intensity and creativity over their albums.
Yeah, their range has kinda taken me by surprise. For example, wasn’t expecting a track like ”Amoral” from them, but I love it. It’s also clear they don’t give a shit and are just doing what they do.
I personally love their early to mid 2000s stretch. Napalm Death is incredible though. They have so many great albums spanning generations that not even their fanbase can build a consensus. My list is way different than any of yours. And yours are all varied from each other. Yet each list is right, because with ND you can’t fo wrong. I enjoy each album, even the ones I rank low. Mine: 1. Smear Campaign 2. The Code is Red… 3. Enemy of the music business 4. Apex predator - easy meat 5. Throes of joy… 6. Order of the leech 7. Time waits.. 8. Words from the exit wound 9. Utilitarian 10. Utopia banished 11. Fear emptiness despair 12. Scum 13. From enslavement… 14. Inside the torn apart 15. Harmony corruption 16. Diatribes
Wow! Thanks Guys! This was super informative and very helpful for me. And kudos to you guys trudging through this monstrous discography. That in itself is pretty crazy. Confession time: Poseur Alert: I love Greed Killing. Haha. I always have. I have only ever owned The Code Is Red, Long Live The Code & the compilation, Noise For Music's Sake, which is pretty convenient. Now I gotta check out Time Waits For No Slave. I love Amoral too. Such a different, cool ditty. I've been meaning for many, many, many years to pick up a copy of either Harmony Corruption or Utopia Banished. It appears the latter is the way to go. Now I'm thinking I would love to see you guys (way, way down the road) rate the SWANS discography. That would be another challenging listen, but hopefully rewarding as well. Anyway, keep up the good work fellas!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I think I would have liked Greed Killing more if it wasn't Napalm Death. It's not a bad song it's just so far removed from their sound that it just feels forced. There's a lot of stuff in this current Century Media run that is must own material especially Time Waits for No Slave. That album will peel your face off. I've never actually sat down and jammed Swans to be honest so that would be a really raw take for me.
Amazing job guys! Not an easy task for sure! A couple of things, the early records have a historical significance the outweighs the production quality. Back then those albums were simply insane. Some of the best ND release are EPs, my favourite being Mentally Murdered (1989). Personally I would prefer if you rated each album individually (out of 5 stars) and then presented the ranking based on the average score of each album. Love your stuff!!!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! These are usually big undertakings but we enjoy the hell out it. We try to rate on our own likes and dislikes across the board and production does come into play there. Grind should sound dirty though so I didn't hit them too hard there on the early albums. I think just ranking them with out the stars is how we want this to go simply because I don't want to clutter the screen with a ton of graphics.
Love the Utopia Banished respect, easily becoming a favourite of mine. Surprised none of u brought up As the world keeps turning, absolute banger of a track with an awesome video. Love your guy's videos, much respect from NS Canada 🇨🇦 stay metal
I find the history of Napalm Death fascinating. That Justin Broadrick played drums for them as a teenager, then went on to form Godflesh, who used a drum machine is funny. Then Mick Harris played drums then went on to do Scorn, which became all electronic.
Necrotic Nick- Agreed. Their history was all over the place especially their beginnings. Don't forget about Defecation too. Mitch and Mick put out a killer debut with "Purity Dillusion"
Just on the 'Harmony Corruption' sell out thing - at the time in the UK the punk scene was totally dominated by the strict political vibe that Crass had laid out which was super self-righteous and snobbish - lots of punks HATED any kind of metal, even crossover thrash bands got treated like they were Dokken - really bizarre behaviour but it happened... Really good job guys, only thing I'd add is the first 2 Peel Sessions (F.E.T.O lineup recorded professionally by a top studio) should be mandatory listening - that's their best stuff, real head exploding music.
Necrotic Nick- I guess I can see the sellout thing from that angle. Generally I see punk and metal as pretty close relatives but I forget it wasn't always that way. I actually have the Grind Madness as the BBC comp with them, Bolt Thrower, Extreme Noise Terror, Unseen Terror and Carcass. Fucking loved it.
I remember reading an interview where Shane Embury said things like drinking Coca Cola and wearing certain types of shoes would get you labeled a sellout as well. Sounds more culty than snobbish, really.
Necrotic Nick- Carcass is definitely on the list and we are waiting for the new one to drop which I am stoked for after that banger of an EP they dropped.
I am by no means a grindcore fan myself, but I find myself liking this band more and more. Is it safe to say I can compare them to Darkthrone in a way of wondering what will they come out with next? What is the sound gonna be like? That’s how I do. Time Waits for no Slave is my absolute ☝️ the opener, Strong-Arm is a relentless opener and grooves well right into Diktat, another killer riff. The whole album grooves well. This is probably about the only grind band I really like and got into. Killer ranking as usual and sharing the history behind this band. 🍻
yeayhhh after months of waiting ,ur guys did it for one my favourite band all time.great list although bit differenth with my list as i put harmony corruption as my no 1.classic death metal stuff but same worse album for me either diatribes/ inside the torn apart.cannot wait for c.corpse!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, this one took a bit more time to put together since it was such a big list and we all wanted to be apart of this one. Harmony kind of divided us which I figured we'd be closer on since we all like death metal so much here.
After Sabbath, Motorhead, Maiden and Priest. Napalm Death are the next influential English band in extreme music. Mick Harris was a unreal drummer. His ideas and attitude were a fuck you to everything. Lighting in a bottle. You can't contrive what they were in the early days. I love the early era. But Barney is the man, great lyrics and phrasing. Met Danny Herrera before a Napalm gig a few years ago. A bird had just shat on my mate and he was like oh man, thats too bad. haha. Met Barney and Shane in the venue. Was Power trip supporting too. Both bands were unreal.
Necrotic Nick- I'd have to agree with them being the next most influential on that list. They pioneered a subgenre essentially and continued to grow and expand their sound. Jon and I met Barney and Shane years ago and they were solid dudes. It's still on of my favorite run ins.
Man the song Infiltrator got me into them. The song rips, theres a couple of good songs but Infiltrator style is what I wanted. Then I heard Suffer The Children. Napalm kicks ass
I really like their early stuff and their last couple of releases. Everything in between is either hit or miss, with long periods of stuff I just didn't care for. That being said legendary band excited to see where they go in the future.
Necrotic Nick- Utopia Banished, Harmony Corruption and From Enslavement to Obliteration were some early standouts for me that showed how diverse their sound could be. The middle period after Fear Emptiness Despair was mostly misses for me but a lot of the recent stuff has been killer. I'm always down for new albums from them especially after that last one.
Pre-Napalm Death grind - what about Siege, does that count? Btw, my fave is probably From Enslavement... I remember all the punk/crust kids getting pissed when Napalm Death went to Florida to record their death metal album
Necrotic Nick- I don't know if Siege is considered grind or just crust punk but they were definitely influential as hell. FETO is still up there for me namely because I can't listen to a grind band without hearing elements from that album. That album I think is the formula for straight up grindcore.
Siege is pure hardcore punk, nothing grind about it (maybe the sound?). I absolutely love that early 80s punk era by the way - way more than grindcore actually - I made a playlist with all these hardcore bands that influenced grindcore, if you're interested in that...ua-cam.com/play/PLJr6Uuxf419Z4oXc3_T5ght1qrx53ln0-.html
I saw them in '87 supporting D.R.I. and Holy Terror. They were running through the chords with each other before they played each song. Totally blew me away. Saw them a ton of times after that (U.L.U supported by Extreme Noise Terror and Bolt Thrower. Supporting Naked Raygun etc.) and after, on the Grindcrusher tour and beyond. The Lee Dorian, Bill Steer line up was by far the best for me. They went from leaders to followers (ironically) when they released Harmony Corruption.
Necrotic Nick- Damn, that's awesome you got to see them as well as all those other bands around that time. As much as I like Harmony Corruption I agree they definitely jumped on a bandwagon a bit there. I'm a giant death metal fan though so I really dug it and it wasn't as though they left being extreme behind, it was just different.
First 'ThrallsOfMetal' I watched & you sure took me on a journey...🤣 Cheers lads!👍 The 'BBC Arena' programme blew us away as kids in 80's UK🇬🇧, thought they were hilarious/insane, by 'HarmonyCorruption'/'UtopiaBanashed' they were my favourite band!! Lost interest by 'FearEmptinessDespair'... Until 'Enemy...' Thing I love about all these 'ranking UA-camrs', it allows us to go back &rediscover +discover the holes in bands discographies we missed at the time... I love the diverse opinions of 'Thralls'. Tho, you guys are generally on my wave length, love the banter... You are the best at what you do!🙌 Gonna check out your Carcass discography next...
Only got into them in the last couple years... 16. Diatribes 15. Words from the Exit Wound 14. Inside the Torn Apart 13. Scum 12. From Enslavement to Obliteration 11. Order of the Leech 10. Fear, Emptiness, Despair 9. Enemy of the Music Business 8. Utilitarian 7. The Code is Red...Long Live the Code 6. Throes of Joy in the Jaw of Defeatism 5. Harmony Corruption 4. Time Waits for No Slave 3. Apex Predator - Easy Meat 2. Smear Campaign 1. Utopia Banished
Awesome vid! I dug the differing opinions on all the albums. I think Diatribes is indeed ND sounding, they were always about pushing boundaries and trying new things which IMO is their status quo and love that about them. My fave has got to be Utopia Banished or Fear but love them all. I'm kinda of a fanboy I suppose lol.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! We really enjoyed do thing one since Napalm Death is such an awesome band and have a wild discography. The more groove metal years near the end with Earache don't resonate much with me outside of Fear, Emptiness, Despair which was pretty much my first exposure to the band. Utopia Banished is fucking amazing though. It's aged remarkably.
Awesome Napalm rankings. Looking forward to the Cannibal Corpse rankings. Plus you guys get to talk about your favorite singer again......Chris Barnes. Lol. Except this will be when he had great vocals.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I'm really looking forward to/ dreading ranking Cannibal Corpse's albums. lol. This would be the Barnes I like... but there still may be a Barnes impression squeezed in there. lol
Cool video guys. I couldn't disagree more with almost every rank you all did ,but that's expected with a great band with such a huge and diverse career like Napalm Death.
When you gets cds from Danny Castro's bands Across Antarctica, Castrofate, & Piss On Christ. Tell him that his friend John Baylor sent & recommend the bands to you.
Shane Embury is surely one of the most underrated bass-players. In fact, he's actually the main songwriter for the band in terms of guitars etc. I believe he wrote the music for all songs except for one, on the latest album!!
Nice. Napalm Death is really good. Like most of their stuff well except Order of the leach and the Code is Red 16 Order of the Leach 15 The Code is Red..long live the Code 14 Fear Emptiness Despair 13 Scum (I expect to get a LOT of shit for this lol, it’s a fine Grind album though) 12 Words from the Exit Wound 11 Smear Campaign 10 From Enslavement to obliteration (Better than Scum) 9 Time Waits for no Slave 8 Easy Meat 7 Inside the Torn Apart 6 Diatribes 5 Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism 4 Enemy of the Music Business 3 Harmony Corruption 2 Utilitarian 1 Utopia Banished (the perfect blend of their classic Grind mixed with Death Metal)
I absolutely love their most recent couple of albums (Apex Predator, Throes of Joy). Some of the most savage music they've made. Particularly like how much Killing Joke(huge fan)/Swans influence is present on them.
Summary Ranking Worst to Best: 16 - Diatribes (62 points) 15 - From Enslavement to Obliteration (61) 14 - Scum (59) 13 - Inside the Torn apart (56) 12 - Words from the Exit Wound (50) 11 - Enemy of the Music Business (48) 10 - Order of the Leech (44) 9 - Fear, Emptiness, Despair (42) 8 and 7 are missing because 6 is a triple Tie on 40 points namely: - The Code is red ... long live the Code - Apex Predator - Easy Meat - Utopia Banished 5 - Smear Campaign (39) 4 - Utilitarian (37) 3 - Harmony Corruption (36) 2 - Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism (21) 1 - Time waits for no Slave (13) The simple calculating method: rank 1 = 1 point / rank 2 = 2 points etc. and then adding the points. And then the most points is the worst ranking.
Necrotic Nick- I love seeing all the love for Time Waits for No Slave and Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism. I love a lot of this more current era.
I wonder if I'm the only one here who would put Mentally Murdered EP at #1 (instead of skipping it, lol). Napalm Death fans I know revere this record as one of the best staples of extreme metal period. It's basically From Enslavement... music form perfected, polished and appropriately produced (raw yet highly listenable). I think what makes From Enslavement and Mentally Murdered so important is that music on these records combines death metal flavored harmonies with the unmatched energy they were borrowing from Discharge (they often mentioned their initial idea was to take Discharge - Why? kinda music and play it as fast as they can). The off-beat vocal structures and slightly syncopated riffs create instant hooks and add a lot of movement to music, especially when it's multiplied by frenetic blast beats that barely keep the time but work perfectly in combination with the off-beat guitar and vocal hooks. Listen to Walls of Confinement - the instruments seem to barely hit the same accents but there is so much energy it will make you go berserk in a second. Once Bill Steer, Lee Dorian and Mick Harris were gone - the music became quite more polished but more conventional and not as energetic to me. And yeah, if they were more skillful while maintaining these off-beat structures AND all keeping good time - it would have been that much better but it's still close to perfect in my book. No, I'm not some hard ass purist either, I'm a fan and enjoyed plenty of bloody moshpits at ND live shows)
Necrotic Nick- I still need a copy of it on it's own. We just chose to keep the EPs off on this one since there was so much to cover. I do enjoy that one though.
I’m going to the UK for the first time…I’ll be seeing Napalm Death 3/8 in London and again 3/9 in Liverpool…hopefully I remember to come back here and let you guys know how the concerts are
I love ND so much, I had to rewatch this video…I meant to say this the first viewing: Nick, thanks for wearing a Nails shirt…they’re a worthy heir to extreme metal/grindcore bands like Napalm Death
Siege of power is one of my favorite "flowing" fast to faster punky grind songs. God I love so many tracks of theirs. I also Like the song anti body for the way it's put together and the chorus is so bouncy and catchy. More accessible I guess but it still kicks ass. Nazi punks cover is good too. I own the double disc noise for music's sake and the code is red.......the code was given to me by a dude a tattoo shop that bought it not knowing what it was and he said- "Here I know you like this crazy shit" and I said Why yes I do sir and do keep me in mind anytime this happens. He also gave my a bangin' compilation with the Bloodbath song eaten ,C.C. song death walking terror and a bunch of black metal bands on it. Thank's guy who bit off more than he could chew- I guess sometimes free metal is the best metal.
The EP Mentally Murdered is one of the finest moments of any Grindcore offering. It is only an EP but considered the best of the genre by many. It was the best culmination of the first real consistent line up. Shane, Bill, Mick, Lee. Also, you guys seem to miss that the early genre was defined by the low-fi analog DiY. There is this line between oldest fans and new fans, meaning Harmony Corruption onwards that complain that all the gloss that makes Death metal and Grindcore clear enough to hear everything ruins the DiY spirit of the early work. I also got into Napalm Death when Harmony Corruption came out and really love the Scott Burns, crushed mids thick guitars, death metal Florida sound. To untrained ears Scum and Enslavement are difficult entries. Over time though, given enough exposure to it... I eventually ended up loving the more raw entries of the early work over some of the very well produced later works. Mentally Murdered ended up also being my fave entry over time. Great research you guys did and a pretty phenomenal attempt to digest so much material for a video. Well done. I will also add that Utopia might be my fave record. The song structures, lyrics, and blend of death and grind are at an apex here. -- EDIT-- I will say this... on Greed Killing EP... Antibody... stands out as the best offering from the Diatribe session. Give it a whirl. It is a standout from that late 90s time. Also, on Order of the Leech... Per Capita is really really good. Never seemed to be played live. Great riffs.
Necrotic Nick- I like Utilitarian but it really didn't match what they did on other recent albums so it fell a bit for me. The last time I saw them was in 2016 as well with Misery Index and The Black Dahlia Murder. Sick show.
That's how I was, saw them back in 2018 & enjoyed them, started to dig into them a bit more & love a lot of their work, but i got no where near the thralls of metal knowledge lol
Awesome! I expected controversial picks but I am surprised about the consensus around Scum/FETO so low in the rankings. I'm with Rin on Scum though... totally legendary, has to be #1! Side A has the punk attitude/lyrical content and the Venom/Celtic Frost/Bathory inspired riffing, while side B introduces the trademark dual vocals, and of course it's the breakout album for all things blast beats. The fact that it's a "split" is even more fascinating to me, it's like watching history being made. And that youthful uncontrolled energy, it never gets old! Anyways, my top 10; 1 - Scum 2 - Utopia banished 3 - FETO 4 - Enemy of the music business 5 - Time waits for no slave 6 - Apex Predator 7 - Harmony corruption 8 - Smear campaign 9 - Fear, emptiness, despair 10 - The code is red
Necrotic Nick- I do love side A but side B was a bit rough for me and FETO was a huge improvement. I'd say FETO is probably one of the most influential grind albums there is. I hear that album in so many grind releases that followed. Tis was difficult to rank though because I love a lot of the recent stuff as well.
@@thrallsofmetal agreed on FETO...and the recent stuff is killer, such an amazing band, definitely no wrong ranking, every album is good in my book (yes, even Diatribes!)
I thought Apex Predator got such little buzz when it came out, but it might be their most balanced and engaging release for me. Speed, heaviness, atmospheric experimentation, the whole thing has a great flow and just works on every level for me. They've been on a winning streak for so long, but Apex Predator is a high water mark for me.
Necrotic Nick, have you ever checked out Lee Dorians other projects after Cathedral? With The Dead (Doom Metal) Septic Tank (Punk/Hardcore punk). I’m just really wanting to test you’re tolerance for Lee’s vocals for how much you don’t like it.
Necrotic Nick- I have Rotting Civilisation from Septic Tank and I liked it but still not a fan of Dorrian's vocals. I don't own With the Dead but I've jammed it on youtube and again, the music is cool, but I'm just not that into his vocals.
Ah, I have a very different experience with Napalm Death I guess. I was never a grind kind of person - much more of a thrash, hardcore and groove fan. So I got into them through their "lost" era - particularly Inside the Torn Apart. I think I like every song on that album. I like Diatribes too but it's a bit more stale I guess. Then when they picked up the grind again, I think they peaked again with Code is Red. I love that album start to finish. The cou0ple of albums right before and after it are great too but Code is Red stands out. I have liked everything they have put out since then as well. Suddenly they became a very reliable band, after 2 decades of shifting a lot every couple of years. Awesome live band as well. Mad respect for them! I remember the 1st time I saw them Barney had broken his leg and had to go on stage in crutches. Not only did he perform, but he occasionally helped out crowdsurfers with the crutch.
Saw Head of David in 1359, also at the Marquee, with the Stretchheads. They were like a less industrial, gothier (not Gothic) Godflesh. Another gig where I hoped nobody would make eye contact.
@@thrallsofmetal I think that is one of Head of David's better tracks. I think the same mob were in a short-lived group called Sweet Tooth for a while.
It’s one of life’s greatest joys to rank the accomplishments of Gods...for all they do is either perfection, evolution, or mind-life-reality-world CHANGING, ✊🏿🖤🤎🤘🏾
@@thrallsofmetal great show. It’s so cool how you guys character and personality came out with each rank of the album. Can’t wait for next one, Cannibal right? 🧟♂️🧟🧟♀️
I saw the "Campaign for Musical Destruction" tour back then in La Baie, Québec, Canada. A young Necronomicon and Brutal Truth opening. One the wildest shows ever.
Remember seeing Napalm Death supported by Cerebral Fix at London's Marquee in 1356 (near enough). Didn't get it at the time and was scared witless of the crowd. Ah, the innocence of youth.... (anyone want to offer me a book deal?)
"England invented punk." I'm sitting back laughing while thinking about MC5, The Ramones, The Stooges, and Death. Can't forget that Napalm was also influenced by Siege from Massachusetts and Repulsion.
Seen them Pontiac, MI fall 2021. Was only one in line got "Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism". Very heavy. They open for GWAR. So it was easy to get out of the parking lot!! So many great albums, Order of Leech, Fear, Emptiness, Despair ...depends on mood or level of energy you want Napalm Death delivers \m/
It's difficult to review ND output from metalhead perspective exclusively. I mean they were and still are strongly influenced by so many non-metal music styles like post punk, noise rock, industrial and hardcore punk/crust, although it's maybe not that obvious at the first sight to someone unfamiliar with it. For example, about the 'The Wolf I Feed' track, it's quite clear that Killing Joke was the main (let's say primordial) influence there, especially vocal-wise, at least more than Ozzy or Bell from FF were. They come to that perspective from time to time, but ND discography should be reviewed from both metal and non-metal approaches in parallel throughout their whole career. However, you guys have had put a lot of time into making of this video and that should be respected. Keep up that meticulous approach in the future!
remain nameless... the riff at the middle of the song is one of the greatest. I like incidiary incoming, infiltraitor, and most of enemy of the music business, diktat, brink of extinction etc.
See? Every time you start to doubt yourself in life, remember moments like this where you made a good choice. Not only a good choice, but the right choice.
Really nice ranking but for me Harmony corruption No.1 as I love death metal and this one is definitely most death metal album from ND, Stay grind ..........
1- Utopia Banished - the songwriting is amazing one of the best death metal albums of all time even with the startup sound on the beginning of all the tracks xD 2- Enemy Of The Music Business - its the only other album that has nearly every song as a standout, probably Barneys best performance, phenomenal rage 3- Death By Manipulation - Im putting this one in here even though its only 4 songs E.P the material is so good it would challenge Utopia Banished for no 1 if it was full length as the production is slightly better, Napalm Death at their absolute prime 4- Words From The Exit Wound - a real return to form after the experimental and more generic diatribes/torn apart , tracks like Incendiary Incoming among their best riffs of any album 5- Time Waits For No Slave - some standout songs and a great production and heavy sound 6- Smear Campaign 7- Harmony Corruption - would be much higher ranked if the vocals were better 8- Code Is Red 9- Fear Emptiness Despair - Big full production but also very cold sounding, making for a magnificent bleak heavy industrial Napalm Death effort 10- Utilitarian 11- Order Of The Leech 12- Apex Predator 13- From Enslavement To Obliteration 14 - Throes - apart from one song Backlash Just Because which is great the rest felt lacking and unmemorable in comparison to other albums, terrible edgy album picture too, not clever or artistic like we are used to from the band 15 - Inside The Torn Apart 16- Diatribes 17- Scum
I agree with 95% of this, my number one would be The Code is Red…. Long Live the Code…. Strictly because that was the first full ND record I heard and it is killer. Silence is Deafening is my fav ND tune. I still need to get it on vinyl.
@@thrallsofmetal It may be because for the most part I'm just not a bif Death Metal guy? Love Scum and Enslavement and post 2000ish they returned to that style. Their first 2 albums inspired a lot of people including the ace likes of The Boredoms and John Zorn.
I got onboard with 'The Code is Red' and actually think the period from then to the current period is their best period. Whenever I try to listen to anything before then it just sounds regressive to me. I actually think the new one is the best thing they've ever done and would agree to a tee with what Shredlord said; that it perfectly represents all facets of the band in a single album.
Necrotic Nick- I love most of this current era with Century Media but I still love those old school releases. I agree that it does sound regressive since this band has such a pioneering spirit and are willing to keep broadening their sound. I knew the newest one would be high on my list. I expected a great album from them but what I got was one of their best and most vicious over their massive career. I want more of that in the future.
@@thrallsofmetal Yes!!! When I say regressive, it's mostly that I am old and think most of the death metal production (pre-Russ) worked better for true death metal bands. Actually, I am not sure I am a fan of (real) grindcore,,,, I just know I am a fan of Napalm Death!!! Anyway I am stoked that a band of guys my age (early 50's) are still killing it and putting out some of their best material ever!!! And I'm also stoked that YOU younger fellas are picking up this torch!!! Based on my age and the angle of some of the stuff you review, I might seem a bit cranky in my comments, but you and your crew are doing an exceptional job of keeping this tribe in the loop of new and quality releases! Max Cavalera knows his shit!
You guys probably have a lot on your plate, but Malevolent Creation’s Catalog is pretty lengthy too Im also pretty sure a couple got married and chose you suffer as their wedding song lol 🤘
Napalm Death is kind of like Six Feet Under to me. I love both bands, but each cover a wide range of sounds and quality. Don't like this album? You might like the next one, it'll sound vastly different. If not, here are five other albums. Guarantee you'll like at least one. They're kinda like the old Star Trek movies... The good ones are great, the bad ones are truly awful, but on the whole they average out to an enjoyable experience. I couldn't hold to a hard and fast ranking for ND. Today I might rank Harmony Corruption #1, next week Scum might be my top pick. Another reason I'm happy to let you guys torture yourself with the ranking. 😁 My only gripe? You forgot the naplalm-making instructions in the description after Rin so politely pointed them out.
this is gonna be a tough one, so many killer albums.
Cut Rin some slack. Kid's only 23 ya know.
Just saw them live last November. They killed!! They're still amazing!
@@Madhouse_Media From my understanding he still is.....
No other band their age is making shit this consistently intense, and the new one matches up with the intensity of bands in their 20’s. It’s unbelievable and really cool as An example that your edge doesnt have to dull as you get older.
Necrotic Nick- Could not have said it better, bro! With those last 2 bangers I expect the next one to be absolutely insane.
What about Cannibal Corpse?
Shane Embry is such an underrated bassist. This was awesome. The patience it must've taken to rank this. You guys rule.
🤘💀🤘
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, bro! I've had the pleasure of meeting Shane. Super cool dude and that dude is constantly working on different stuff. I still need to get the most recent Venomous Concept actually.
Top 3 Favorite NAPALM DEATH Albums :
3. Enemy Of The Music Business (2000)
2. From Enslavement To Obliteration (1988)
1. Fear, Emptiness, Despair (1994)
You know what's super-weird? That Meat-Package on the cover of Apex Predator is actually an IPad! Don't know how to interpret that, but that's how it is. :) Great ranking, guys!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Holy shit! I never noticed that it was an Ipad honestly. That's pretty crazy how subtle that is.
Interpretation is pretty simple...YOU are the easy meat - they didn't chose brains randomly - and the media/corporation control your desires and "needs" via all these devices and distractions.
I still dont think its an ipad.
Keep bouncing it here. Hit us up on the Facebooks.
I feel your pain man. I wish i had buddies like these i could talk metal with.
Necrotic Nick- Well, if you haven't got to watch it yet I hope you do when you get the chance, bro!
Unchallenged Hate!!!! Hell yeah! Thanks for pointing out that classic, Nick. I always thought the fact that these bands were so political yet had incoherent vocals was somehow mesmerizing. Paved the way for my love for grind and crust
Great video usual fellas, can't wait for the CC ranking!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! CC is next!
We need a deicide ranking next
We've got Cannibal Corpse and Incantation next.
God, you guys always bring amazing content
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I'm glad you dug it!
Cheers.
Thanks, man! When I found that shirt online, I knew I had to have it.
This was great. Extremely tough band to rank.

Dead last... Diatribes
This video is longer than most napalm death gigs I’ve been to.
Superb work gents 👏👏👏
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man!
Definitely longer than You Suffer
This truly is 'that curse of being in thrall' . . . rating your favorite ND albums that is!
Necrotic Nick & Miller - > Time Waits For No Slave is also my #1 in their discography!
Miller - > Throes of Joy was also my #2 album by them! Everything about that record is incredible. It rarely leaves my table some nights!
Necrotic Nick- So many bangers in their recent years. I still jam the shit out of Throes since it blew me away when we reviewed it.
Really difficult to rank my favorite band of all times. Fear, emptiness, despair is always in my top
Awesome album, takes the top spot for me along with Time Waits For No Slave. Two different kinds of heaviness and intensity.
That one got me into Napalm.
I'm not a big Cannibal Corpse fan, but I am loving that Cannibal Corpse margaritaville shirt Jammin' Jon. Jam On!
I ordered that shirt like 4 months ago. I thought it would never get here but then it showed up right before we shot this video, so I thought it was time to release it to the world. They also had a Morbid Angel shirt and a Deicide one. I may or may not have ordered both...
Can't wait to hear this. Next, Cannibal Corpse :)
"The birth of a genre"...I totally agree with you Rin. I have a similar take on Venom's Welcome to Hell
Necrotic Nick- They are the godfathers of grind for a reason.
@@thrallsofmetal absolutely!
Miller- Those are three of my fav's. I may pick Meshuggah for my turn to pick a ranking, we'll see.
Dying Fetus and Cattle would be awesome! Especially Cattle. Would love to hear their takes on the earlier era of that band. Even though they don't really cover EPs I'd love to hear them speak on Ten Torments which is literally a completely different band
@@shawnbrucker1697 that ep reminds me of the locust a lot
Omg dude!! Yes! Ultitarian, and the last album are my favorite two.
Necrotic Nick- The last couple in particular are some of my favorites.
Just wanted to tell you guys you're awesome. Keep up with this fabulous channel.

1. Smear Campaign
2. The Code is Red…

4. Apex predator - easy meat
5. Throes of joy…
6. Order of the leech
7. Time waits..
8. Words from the exit wound
9. Utilitarian

@@thrallsofmetal Fair enough, you guys are doing an awesome job! :)
And the split with S.O.B. is pretty awesome soundwise, both raw and quite listenable production
I remember reading an interview where Shane Embury said things like drinking Coca Cola and wearing certain types of shoes would get you labeled a sellout as well. Sounds more culty than snobbish, really.
I'm pretty sure you'll do Carcass sometime soon hopefully! Maybe you can do a Carcass Album Ranked video in August, when the new album comes out!
Necrotic Nick- Carcass is definitely on the list and we are waiting for the new one to drop which I am stoked for after that banger of an EP they dropped.
I got an interesting idea, take an album and rearrange the tracklist
Necrotic Nick- That would be tough as hell.
@@thrallsofmetal It might be tough but would definitely be interesting
I remember picking up Enemy of the Music album at a record store for 1.99. It was my first entry into napalm and it was magical
One of my favorite bands. Love Godflesh as well as Scorn. This band produced so many bands that broke away from it.
The boys from bean land! I bet this was hard to rank for you all
It sucked. Even now I'm wondering if I made the right choices.
@@jamminjon8074 my man is gonna start having sleep paralysis demons about his choices
Love this band, saw them in Bournemouth (UK) before the covid situation. Glad I found this channel, better late than never eh..
First 'ThrallsOfMetal' I watched

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! This was a wild discography to go over and I figured we'd have different answers but it was a lot of fun to go over.

3 Harmony Corruption
2 Utilitarian
1 Utopia Banished (the perfect blend of their classic Grind mixed with Death Metal)
I’m a big fan of Helmet’s Meantime…that said, I dig Diatribes…it’s hard and furious and Barney sounds great, as usual
This channel kinda rocks \m/ suprised i hadnt come across it till now
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I'm glad you dig it!
I absolutely love their most recent couple of albums (Apex Predator, Throes of Joy). Some of the most savage music they've made. Particularly like how much Killing Joke(huge fan)/Swans influence is present on them.
Summary Ranking Worst to Best:
16 - Diatribes (62 points)
15 - From Enslavement to Obliteration (61)
14 - Scum (59)
13 - Inside the Torn apart (56)
12 - Words from the Exit Wound (50)
11 - Enemy of the Music Business (48)
10 - Order of the Leech (44)
9 - Fear, Emptiness, Despair (42)
8 and 7 are missing because 6 is a triple Tie on 40 points namely:
- The Code is red ... long live the Code
- Apex Predator - Easy Meat
- Utopia Banished
5 - Smear Campaign (39)
4 - Utilitarian (37)
3 - Harmony Corruption (36)
2 - Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism (21)
1 - Time waits for no Slave (13)
The simple calculating method: rank 1 = 1 point / rank 2 = 2 points etc. and then adding the points.
I’m going to the UK for the first time…I’ll be seeing Napalm Death 3/8 in London and again 3/9 in Liverpool…hopefully I remember to come back here and let you guys know how the concerts are
Napalm was excellent at both shows…and I got to meet Barney before the Liverpool show, so I would say great first time in the UK
I love ND so much, I had to rewatch this video…I meant to say this the first viewing: Nick, thanks for wearing a Nails shirt…they’re a worthy heir to extreme metal/grindcore bands like Napalm Death
Only concert I've ever been thrown out of! Napalm Death / Goatwhore 2004 or 2005.
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, I have yet to kicked out of a show at all. lol
Wtf did you do lmao, I have yet to ever get kicked out of a show.
I saw em live once back in 2016. One of those bands I like but not too familiar with their discography, Utilitarian I enjoyed all the way through.
Awesome! I expected controversial picks but I am surprised about the consensus around Scum/FETO so low in the rankings. I'm with Rin on Scum though... totally legendary, has to be #1! Side A has the punk attitude/lyrical content and the Venom/Celtic Frost/Bathory inspired riffing, while side B introduces the trademark dual vocals, and of course it's the breakout album for all things blast beats. The fact that it's a "split" is even more fascinating to me, it's like watching history being made. And that youthful uncontrolled energy, it never gets old! Anyways, my top 10;
1 - Scum
2 - Utopia banished
3 - FETO
4 - Enemy of the music business
5 - Time waits for no slave
6 - Apex Predator
7 - Harmony corruption
8 - Smear campaign
9 - Fear, emptiness, despair
10 - The code is red
Necrotic Nick- I do love side A but side B was a bit rough for me and FETO was a huge improvement. I'd say FETO is probably one of the most influential grind albums there is. I hear that album in so many grind releases that followed. Tis was difficult to rank though because I love a lot of the recent stuff as well.
@@thrallsofmetal agreed on FETO...and the recent stuff is killer, such an amazing band, definitely no wrong ranking, every album is good in my book (yes, even Diatribes!)
7:01 💀💀 that was so accurate
I thought Apex Predator got such little buzz when it came out, but it might be their most balanced and engaging release for me. Speed, heaviness, atmospheric experimentation, the whole thing has a great flow and just works on every level for me. They've been on a winning streak for so long, but Apex Predator is a high water mark for me.
Apex Predator is definitely one of my faves. Absolutely relentless and brutal...
Napalm Death have aged well like fine wine 🍷
Miller- agree with ya on that
Necrotic Nick, have you ever checked out Lee Dorians other projects after Cathedral?
With The Dead (Doom Metal)
Septic Tank (Punk/Hardcore punk).
Would you guys ever consider ranking Immolation's albums? I don't think I've seen it on here yet, and as a huge Immo fan, I would love to see that.
Love the channel
I know they aren't metal, but you guys should do Rush. I think that'd be a pretty interesting discography to rank.
First the metal bands
Necrotic Nick- I'd love to do Rush but we definitely want to get more metal bands done first
@@thrallsofmetal yeah makes sense, this channel's awesome man keep up the good work!
Saw Head of David in 1359, also at the Marquee, with the Stretchheads. They were like a less industrial, gothier (not Gothic) Godflesh. Another gig where I hoped nobody would make eye contact.
Necrotic Nick- To be honest I only had heard of Head of David because of the Fear Factory cover of Dog Day Sunrise which I really ended up liking.
@@thrallsofmetal I think that is one of Head of David's better tracks. I think the same mob were in a short-lived group called Sweet Tooth for a while.
It’s one of life’s greatest joys to rank the accomplishments of Gods...for all they do is either perfection, evolution, or mind-life-reality-world CHANGING,
✊🏿🖤🤎🤘🏾
Necrotic Nick- They've been a favorite of mine for years pretty much for those reasons.
Enemy of music business is their best album
Necrotic Nick- Loved that album. It was definitely a breath of fresh air after those last few Earache years.
100%
Mine too and always will be
Remember seeing Napalm Death supported by Cerebral Fix at London's Marquee in 1356 (near enough). Didn't get it at the time and was scared witless of the crowd. Ah, the innocence of youth.... (anyone want to offer me a book deal?)
Necrotic Nick- Hard to imagine you'd be watching the birth of grind at that moment I bet. lol
@@thrallsofmetal ha, well this was just a touch after that, actually around 1989/90
"England invented punk."
I'm sitting back laughing while thinking about MC5, The Ramones, The Stooges, and Death. Can't forget that Napalm was also influenced by Siege from Massachusetts and Repulsion.
I love Crass, Throbbing Gristle, and Final….watching this again. Getting into the double digits soon 🤘🏾🤎
Dude you guys gotta rank the mortician albums that would be awesome because I love that band but this was sweet loved it rock on 🤘
Seen them Pontiac, MI fall 2021.
Wow, they released another one! Resentment Is Always Seismic - A Final Throw Of Throes. Sounds like follow up to the last album :Throes of joy...
Great job,lads
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I'm glad you dig it!
Nice Nails shirt! They’re supposedly working on some new shit
Holy shit man. Wow. 14, 15, 8, 9, 15 for one of the greatest and most innovative and best sounding albums ever made??? What on earth is going on????
These guys are seriously hard for me to rank, but man I love the new album
Necrotic Nick- This was a pain in the ass but I loved jamming all this stuff again.
remain nameless... the riff at the middle of the song is one of the greatest. I like incidiary incoming, infiltraitor, and most of enemy of the music business, diktat, brink of extinction etc.
Awesome show
Yes John utopia is my favorite also
See? Every time you start to doubt yourself in life, remember moments like this where you made a good choice. Not only a good choice, but the right choice.
Haha yes
Really nice ranking but for me Harmony corruption No.1 as I love death metal and this one is definitely most death metal album from ND, Stay grind ..........
1- Utopia Banished - the songwriting is amazing one of the best death metal albums of all time even with the startup sound on the beginning of all the tracks xD
2- Enemy Of The Music Business - its the only other album that has nearly every song as a standout, probably Barneys best performance, phenomenal rage
3- Death By Manipulation - Im putting this one in here even though its only 4 songs E.P the material is so good it would challenge Utopia Banished for no 1 if it was full length as the production is slightly better, Napalm Death at their absolute prime
4- Words From The Exit Wound - a real return to form after the experimental and more generic diatribes/torn apart , tracks like Incendiary Incoming among their best riffs of any album
5- Time Waits For No Slave - some standout songs and a great production and heavy sound
6- Smear Campaign
7- Harmony Corruption - would be much higher ranked if the vocals were better
8- Code Is Red
9- Fear Emptiness Despair - Big full production but also very cold sounding, making for a magnificent bleak heavy industrial Napalm Death effort
10- Utilitarian
11- Order Of The Leech
12- Apex Predator
13- From Enslavement To Obliteration
14 - Throes - apart from one song Backlash Just Because which is great the rest felt lacking and unmemorable in comparison to other albums, terrible edgy album picture too, not clever or artistic like we are used to from the band
15 - Inside The Torn Apart
16- Diatribes
17- Scum
I agree with 95% of this, my number one would be The Code is Red…. Long Live the Code…. Strictly because that was the first full ND record I heard and it is killer. Silence is Deafening is my fav ND tune. I still need to get it on vinyl.
I'm watching this a year later fuck that was great🤘 you guys rule!
I thought the 90s albums were boring to be honest, but then post 2000 turned killer again.
Necrotic Nick- I liked the first 3 in the 90's and then there was a big fall off for me. The 2000's brought some of their best though.
@@thrallsofmetal It may be because for the most part I'm just not a bif Death Metal guy? Love Scum and Enslavement and post 2000ish they returned to that style. Their first 2 albums inspired a lot of people including the ace likes of The Boredoms and John Zorn.
1:03 actually only two of the most commonly available things you can get
I got onboard with 'The Code is Red' and actually think the period from then to the current period is their best period.
You guys probably have a lot on your plate, but Malevolent Creation’s Catalog is pretty lengthy too
Im also pretty sure a couple got married and chose you suffer as their wedding song lol 🤘
Necrotic Nick- I wouldn't mind doing Malevolent Creation in the future for sure. That may be the most romantic wedding song ever too. lol
My only gripe? You forgot the naplalm-making instructions in the description after Rin so politely pointed them out.
1-Inside The Torn Apart
2--The Code Is Red
3-it depends on the mood))))
