- Many of the surgeries we do as orthopedic surgeons require that the patient keeps weight off the leg until the surgery heals. In this Ask Dr. Geier video, I discuss ways you can still get exercise when you have to keep weight off your leg.

Heather asks:
I got a tibial plateau fracture while biking with my son. I finally had surgery, and I’ve been wearing a brace while waiting for staples to be removed and a permanent cast put on. I’ve been told I won’t be weight bearing for 8 weeks and hopefully walking normally in 6 months. I am a very active 45-year-old woman that cycles, runs, workout and ski. This sitting still is killing me. Any suggestions on staying fit and sane with this injury?
A tibial plateau fracture involves the top of the shin bone just below your knee. Like many broken bones in the leg and foot, you often have to keep weight off your leg while the fracture heals. If you like to run or do other forms of exercise, how can you stay active while you recover?
As I discuss in this video, there are ways to at least get some exercise, even when you must use crutches to walk around. If you suffer a broken bone in your foot, ankle, leg or thigh, learn some ways to get some exercise even if you have to keep weight off your leg.

Right on Doc! Great video.
TPF here, glad I found this. I’m going crazy and can’t drive. Surgeon won’t let me swim until at least 12 weeks.
Tore my acl and CCl while wheeling , life’s crazy for me being a just hs graduate at 17 and then this injury happens.
I’m 19 but also just had knee surgery, really don’t want to sit around doing nothing feeling like a bum, so here we are
1 week off my 2nd acl tear at 20 lol. It’s really a tough recovery but just gotta keep moving forward
Ya but everytime I put my cast foot down my toes quickly goe blue and I pay for it the rest of the day. I can barely get to the bathroom and back. I have a bad sprain and ankle avulsion fracture. No surgery. I feel like 6 weeks in a cast is overkill. My body is falling apart. Im worried about post recovery. The cast has been awful!
How's it now?
@@NobleDorito8698 a year later and still trying to recover. Cast was too tight and caused nerve trauma which I hope will heal over time.
Right now I am no weight bearing in my left foot from skating. I had to get surgery on it a they put a metal plate in it and that means I can’t play any football which sucks but it’ll be alright by Christmas hopefully
I got an injury a year ago and still have a lot of pain in my ankle. Doctors suggest it will heal on its own and surgery is not required. I'm worried since I need to get back on track with life now. I can't keep resting forever.😢
I have a spiral fracture splitting through my growth plate from doing a death drop on roller skates (on accident) I have 3 weeks left of wearing a hard cast then I will move to walking boot I can’t put any weight on my leg until my walking boot I also didn’t require surgery and I hate sitting still. I did physical activity like school volleyball basketball and soccer but I also often ride my bike and roller skate and skateboard but I’ve noticed I’ve been putting on weight on my stomach any tips on what to do (I do have body positivity I would just like to stay fit)
I am 77 yrs bd hard to do exercise sitting on floor
Does anyone do videos on exercises where surgery wasn't done?
I also need non surgical exercise video
I DO NOT KNOW WHY I FEEL LIKE SWIMMING DOES NOT DO MUCH FOR PEOPLE OR @ LEAST ME.
Ruptured my Achilles. I feel if I keep this resting up I’m gonna gain so much weight…. that’s why I’m here lol
I know you're frustrated. Hopefully you and your physical therapist can find some way for you to exercise. Good luck!
You can go to a gym and work out in the assault bike, using only your arms, or the ski erg machine that works out your arms and lower back without messing up with your injury.
Maybe you can also row without using your legs.
My doctors appointment is 2-3 weeks out?
I had a rod inserted into my tibia and screws in my ankle and I was told to weight bare but everytime I try my leg gives out is there anyway to make it better it's been about 5 weeks
I have the same shit as you man.
@@durko8811 update bro im walking now, it's with a limp but doctor said that was normal and it still hurts at times
I have same surgery with Rod inserted in my tibia and nails to support. Very hard to walk without support
@@ppm5257 I have a plate and 5 screws holding my knee together. Was at a party the first night of summer and got a little rough with one of my friends and he landed on my knee wrong and just completely destroyed it. Had to get surgery on it and it’s been 12 weeks non weight bearing to my left leg. I go to see the specialist in a few days and that’s when I should be able to put weight/start walking on it. Hope your leg gets better.
I broke my fublua and tibula and I'm now just in ti my 5 months in to my engry it takes time I'm just fed up with it I was in cast for 12 weeks then hard work starts after you come out it's tuck me fee weeks to put waight on my footh after I came out if cast but my footh and hip is still not rite as Iit can take 6 months of more to recover full best of luck with your leg
1 month ago I got a trimalleolar ankle fracture. I had surgery and have a lot of hardware. I am a mid 40s flying trapeze artist and want to stay in strong shape. The last month I watched my quad disappear. I will do all of these to fatigue. Can you wrap ankle weights around the boot to increase difficulty as you get stronger?

I have dislocated my knee and got a cast for my left whole leg. I have been told to do strengthening exercises which involves lifting my legs a bit while in sleeping position. But the cast feels too heavy. I cant life my injured leg an inch, while I can easily lift my other leg.
What do I do.
