Excellent video. I really like Chris' positive attitude and am so thankful for the time he puts into these. I just did my Ranger rear drums and set the self adjuster just a bit too tight. It was hard to separate the friction from the brake shoes from the usual friction of moving the rear end and driveshaft, so I thought it was correct, but obviously wasn't. So went for a test drive and smelled burning brakes. Put my hand on the rim and drum and it was smoking hot. So backed off the self adjuster a few turns and now all is well. Anyway, thought others could learn from my misstep. So doesn't hurt to take it for a test drive and put your hand (carefully) on the rims and drums afterwards, just to be sure there's no friction.

This is probably the best tip for drum brakes, and I used the hell out of it. I don't know about anyone else, but it seems like no matter how many reference pictures I take I always end up missing an angle I need.
I've been needing my drums brakes changed for a couple months now. I was super nervous about doing it myself given how many little parts there are. But I finally did them today and it really wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. Words cannot express how happy I was to finally learn and replace drum brakes myself! Thanks Chris ❤
Been doing brakes for many years, about over a decade. Never knew about the wrench trick for the springs. Very nice video, and everything is 100% spot on. I've seen some shops do a lot worse, and cut corners, but not all shops do though.
You make videos that explain the whole process so well. I've been working on my own stuff since I was a kid, but there were some parts I'd never had to replace. My wife only knew what she could figure out on her own. With your help, we've done tie rod ends, a MAF sensor, struts, and this weekend we're tackling drum brakes. Keep doing what you're doing, you are greatly appreciated!
This is, without question, the best repair video I've ever seen! It was very clearly filmed and explained, with just the right amount of information. Nice job!
You rock bruv. Your vids have helped me do disk brakes on 3 cars, drum brakes on my Ranger, major annual servicing on 3 different vehicles, and a timing belt and water pump. Appreciate the time you've taken and wanted to say thank you.
Why am I watching this when I don't have a car with drum brakes? Maybe because ChrisFix's videos are so great that I have to watch each and every one of them
He did a very nice job on this video. I have always reused the old hardware and never had any problems with them. When possible I like to remove the drum and use a regular water hose and just hose off everything inside the brakes. It saves on using chemicals and works for me. Last, when installing or uninstalling the top springs I clamp the vise grips on to the top of the spring and pull the spring over the top post. You can also have a machine shop turn your drums if they aren't to bad in order to save some money.
ChrisFix is a great mechanic that makes perfect tutorials on almost every aspect of repairing and maintaining your car. I have now saved thousands of dollars thanks to him and hope to start flipping trucks soon. Who knows how much cash he has saved his viewers. I am so appreciative of these videos, thanks Chris!!

I just got a 1989 Pontiac Firebird and they come with drum brakes which I find quite ridiculous so I’ve been waiting for a ChrisFix video on how to do a disc conversion.
Bought a 2003 Ranger for work. Found out both drums were seized up. Have never worked on drum brakes before. As usual I watched a ChrisFix video and had no issues removing drums that were stuck, replaced the shoes, hardware and wheel cylinders. Had a leaky brake line fitting, took care of that as well (not sure if you have a brake line bending video). You're the man. Thank You
Your videos are, in my opinion, stellar. I’m a visual learner, showing how the drum works, excellent. Your before and after shots, super informative. Your energy keeps me watching and I never take long blinks. Your knowledge, you never shudder for words you know what you’re going to say and you say it using proper descriptions. You could be a film maker, thank you Chris you have given me inspiration and confidence, you are the Man….. thanks you from Napa, California, “Wine Country”…….
I worked as a service mechanic apprentice for about one and a half year.. not once during the time I got this many good advices. I'm actually a bit shocked as to how many times we just reused all the old parts. Just replaced the shoes and the drums and called it a day. If only I had known of this. Thanks for showing me the propper ways of doing it, ChrisFix.
Wow! Great job. Thanks a bunch for re-educating this old timer on how to replace drum brakes. Did it as a kid with my beater cars, but it's been awhile.
Chris. I love you man. You've saved me thousands...you've also ignited my passion for mechanics...making it more enjoyable than stressful. ..God bless you man ❤
Thanks Chris! I've done drum brakes before, and never like doing them, mostly because I'm not familiar with them (pics are a huge help). This video will make a great reference to keep things on track in the future. I've replaced motors, done head gaskets, and various other big jobs, but for some reason, I hate drum brakes. Ha ha. Thanks for the help man!
I can’t believe that your drums are EXACTLY the same as the ones I’m changing and the car I’m working on is 55 years old. Some things never change 😅😅 Really appreciate your channel. Clear, concise videos and narration 👏🏻👏🏻
Man! You did such a great job explaining everything! Your camera angles were on point! You are a great instructor! Any young mechanic would be very lucky to have you mentoring them. My job was not nearly as fast, but it did get completed because of your video, thanks again Chris!!
Thank you so much for your videos I'm 16 with a 94 ford f150 and I just replaced both of the rear drum brakes because of this video please don't ever stop making these videos😂😂
I did it!!!! Without the proper tools too. Thank you again. I have ordered the tools. The set I did we were swapping an axel on a 2001 dodge pickup. My friend said to just cut off the E-brake, but I wanted to keep them. They had been cut off the replacement axel but it had new brakes on it. I changed the wheel cylinders since I had to take everything off anyway and we have to run new brake lines. The differential vent goes through the splitter for the rear brakes and it was stuck. While running for parts, the brakes started going bad on my GMC pickup, at least I have had some training. Thank you so much.
I'll second that. It's nice to see someone explain what they are doing without fumbling around trying to figure out what they are doing while they are trying to explain what they are doing. ChrisFix did a great job. Clear, concise, keep it simple explanation. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I love how you keep improving your videos! Compared to your older versions, this one is super streamlined and efficiently edited. Thank you QUESTION-- Does anyone have any additional tips? Notice anything you would have differently? Please post here
1. Consider wearing a dust mask. Brake dust is not very good for human bodies. 2. A (superior?) alternative to a flare nut wrench is the Vise Grips Locking Wrench. It's only a few dollars more and one Vise Grip adjusts to several sizes of flare nut. www.amazon.com/Vise-Grip-Locking-Wrench-Wire-Cutter/dp/B00004SBB8
I wouldn't of used those drums, The one's that was on it was probably okay and the one's he put on don't look safe. If I really need a new drum I would try to pull a OEM one from the junkyard before using that one. I wouldn't of used so much anti seize. I wouldn't of replaced the cylinder with that cheap auto parts store one that's made by a mistry brand probably equal to the cheapest one you can get on the internet and if buying from a auto parts store ends up costing as much as a better brand would of on rock auto or some place like that, but why crack open your brake system to replace that with one that is more likely to fail then the factory one. You're going to probably be able to see it if the factory one is leaking but the new one could leak and you wont even know.
All2skitzd He's going to be converting it all over to disc brakes so he probably just got the cheapest crap he could buy for the sake of making the video.
***** Yeah, he said in the video that advanced hooked him up with the parts, I was just saying as far as tips and suggestions go when doing a job like this.
When I put the new drums on, I adjust the shoes before I slide the drums on so that the drums have a slight amount of friction. This is usually all you need for initial adjustment I also gravity bleed the brakes on the side I finished while working on the other side. Just make sure the master cylinder reservoir doesn't run dry!
After watching Chris do the front wheel bearing video, I got real brave and did both of mine. Compared to that beast, doing the rear drums seems like a birthday party.
Chris, you are a teacher! Thank you very much for your great video. I have always been impressed with your enthusiasm to share knowledge with people, and I can't neglect to tell you how much I appreciate it.
DevilishModz I think he would be more worried about rotating from summer air to winter air in the tires as winter air gives more traction on snow and ice filled roads.
Rear brakes are used about 20% of the time but also depends on how you drive such as you do a lot of hauling in a truck or towing. I love doing drum brakes they're not around much anymore. Surprised you didn't mention to back off the self adjuster through the access port in the back of the backing plate. That's another way to get the drum off
Most cars still use drum hardware inside the rear rotor for the parking brakes unless you have it on the caliper like on those new calipers he bought. I have seen those parking brake shoes for disc brakes wear out or the brake material gets cracked or even separate off of the shoe on older vehicles.
Chris, What makes me love these brake videos even more is the fact I just picked up a 2000 Ford Ranger and these apply exactly to what I’m doing. Thanks for the content.
I just spent 6 hours on one because I couldn’t fit the drum back on. Turns out I just needed to squeeze the shoes in while fitting the drum on. Dang it lol
You make some of the most detailed and complete videos on this kinda stuff out there! I DIG YOUR ENERGY. I turned wrenches for a living many years ago and I still find you're videos entertaining and informative. Keep doing what you're doing and I'll keep watchin'
I am looking forward for the drum to disc conversion!... Be safe Chris, if something happens to you I'll be forced to start reading about all the things you teach us here in this channel... I cant stand the arrogance of other car guys in UA-cam.
The mech a nic I dont know man!... Chris is doing a great job so far!... If Chris stop doing his videos then I'll gladly jump straigh to your channel. I respectfully pass on this one this time sir!
After I did the rear brakes, I usually start to back up slowly and apply the brakes. This helps the self-adjusters to adjust. I am an old man and that was how I was taught back in 1969 which has worked for me all these years.
Disc brakes offer much better stopping power than drum brakes and they don't cost much more than drums. Maintenance of disc brakes is much easier too. There's no reason in this day and age to bother with drum brakes.
If you service drum brakes properly with new parts, you don't need conversion kits to switch to Disc brakes. They are as good or better as originally engineered in most cases... The problem is... most viewers of this video, think there is something absolutely wrong with drum brakes. There is NOT.
Steve Davis yep. I got the master parts kit which included new parts for pieces he cleaned and reused. Did new parking cables too. Used caliper paint on outside of drums, backing plate and hub and cylinders to keep things cleaner longer. I got 20 ft dump trailer with 4 drums and I can lock them up with brake controller slide and not use truck brake and stop faster than most cars.
On a 1948 Fleetmaster Sedan which I own, I'm gonna do the conversion from Drum to Disc brake. Older cars are real heavy, I have to pump a couple of times on the brake pedal to stop & the car swirls. I just want a peace of mind, that's only reason I'm converting it to Disc brakes.
Never had any issue with the rear drums on my two Toyota Tacoma’s. They’re really good at stopping quickly with a load in the bed or when I’m towing my boat.
How to replace drum brakes: 1. Find aftermarket kit of disk brakes for originally axle with drum brakes 2. Remove drum brakes 3. Smash em with hammer, burn em, pour acid on em 4. Install disk brakes kit
I ALWAYS (and I recommend you also watch multiple videos of the same fix.) Yet this guy has been consistently the best (to my acutual experience under the car), gives more tips, covers multiple scenarios, and the videos are consice.
Patrick Dow they claim that the reason why they put drums in the rear is for you don't have to worry about your rotors and disc brake pads getting screwed up and they claim that sand doesn't get inside the drums well that is a big lie LOL. But anyways that's what they claim
You should do a series in an atv. Even if you don't know much about them they probably aren't that different that cars. I would love it. And I do have an atv that I would like to work on my self but sometimes when I'm doing more complicated stuff I don't because I do t know how to. Would love to see you do that

This is probably the best tip for drum brakes, and I used the hell out of it. I don't know about anyone else, but it seems like no matter how many reference pictures I take I always end up missing an angle I need.
Take apart ALL the things!
unless the last numnut in there did them wrong.
I'm so glad I bought a Ford Ranger, cause Chris's truck is practically the same. Saves me from a ton of pain.
I've never felt so satisfied with a UA-cam video as much as I am now with this one. You're the best!!
Maybe because ChrisFix's videos are so great that I have to watch each and every one of them
Michael S same! 8 months later, but still same
Moni C yup, ya
I just changed my drum brakes and I didn't have to look at the repair manual I just looked at your video. Your videos are great.
Followed your instructions step by step.: The first /left side took 2.5 hours...Learning Curve. The right side took 35 minutes.
Works well! Thanks!
I'm glad you've saved some money because of the videos! Thanks a lot Taylor!
The BEST instructor I have ever known. To be so young and full of knowledge blows my mind. Anytime I experience a vehicle issue I always check out Chris’s you tube channel first. Thank you for sharing your gift (talents). BTW, I own a 2000 Mazda B3000 p/u same color like yours. You make tackling projects effortlessly. Your instructions are precise, you need to sell instructional videos. Again thanks for all. Does Dad still own the Jag? Does Mom still fly in her T-bird?
You
I will never do this on my own car, but ill watch this whole vid cuz its so entertaining
Garrett P what are you scared.. Or it doesn't apply
Mike T Doesn't apply, none of my cars have disc brakes 😂
oh shit my car doesnt even have drum brakes lol
I just replaced my 4 brake pads and rotors by study from his video lol
ROFL
4 years later I still waiting the drum to disk brake conversion
I pray for that will come soon XD
Same
Dude I need to watch that damn video for my truck 😂 drum brakes are old tech 😭
He's just getting his money's worth out of the brand new drum brakes he installed lol
Thank You
Awesome! Glad the video was helpful! I will be doing a brake line and fitting video so stay tuned!
Thanks a lot
So NAPA Auto Parts comes from "wine country"? Interesting🍷🍷🤔lol
one of the best most articulated instructions Ive viewed for any DIY project ever. including my own !!
First
of all, everyone here should gladly enjoy ChrisFix's videos, and with that said, everyone have a good day and eventually a happy new year!
hunter dawso seen what you did there 😂👍
hunter dawso
hahaha, this is awesome! Happy new year!
Glad I was able to teach you the proper way!
Wow!
Me too mate
Same! But feeling more confident after watching this about three times
Denny's Country Life , and the rest of your choice
I can’t believe that your drums are EXACTLY the same as the ones I’m changing and the car I’m working on is 55 years old. Some things never change 😅😅
Really appreciate your channel. Clear, concise videos and narration 👏🏻👏🏻
Yes still wanting the drum to disc conversion sir love the videos
Given that the video never appeared it must have gone terribly wrong.
I agree
@penn707 link?
I been looking for that lol. So never did it huh?
Lol I want to see that to because other videos I watched were super involved
Thanks Chris! I just finished changing drum brakes by myself for the first time thanks to you!
Nice work!
Glad it worked, im doing my first on Saturday, this video explained so well and made it seem so eazy.
1:23 underappreciated transition
@Jackson Stock
Good eye
Damn yeah that was slick asf haha nice
it was so well done no none noticed it :(
1:43 is even better
Jackson Stock at 425 is pretty good too
U narrate PERFECTLY as well as show how it’s done without all the EXTRA talk. U are a wonderful teacher💯💯💯💯💯
Dang man. I don't know how you do it. Perfection at its finest. Awesome job.
Thank you so much.
who else gets excited when Chris uploads new vid!?best diy channel rh!
This is by far the best 'how to' video I think I've ever seen on UA-cam. Great job ChrisFix.
I'll second that. It's nice to see someone explain what they are doing without fumbling around trying to figure out what they are doing while they are trying to explain what they are doing. ChrisFix did a great job. Clear, concise, keep it simple explanation. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you Chris. I used it to successfully change out my 2001 Honda Accord rear drums. Yeah!!!
Nice work!!!!
Thank you so much for this video😭my friend has been changing the shoes on my dad's old truck for a month….. thanks to this video he got it🙏🏽🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🥳🥳🥳
Wow, what a great video..... I just did the drum brakes on my son in law's Ford Ranger..... the information in here (and in the comments) was super helpful. Nice work, Chris Fix!
I love how organized the workshop is.
I’m a man that loves knowing where everything is, neat ☺️
I don't have a car with drum brakes. Heck, I don't even have a car. Yet I still watched the entire video
Learn all your can so when you get a car you can work on it.
Mac Doodles Learn! There is no feeling like the feeling you get when you beat the system of paying overpriced labor costs from these shops that promise the world!
Mac Doodles I can tell you I've thrown money at a lean code problem at my truck. But I still have saved thousands doing work on my truck.
same here! i think chris has hit the sweet spot between satisfying, entertainment and education videos.
T3Survival
For real, this one guy paid $1500 for two rear shocks in his e46 BMW, in reality they are $200 in parts and can be done in under an hour with basic hand tools.
This is my first time working on my truck myself 😂 after reading comments and watching some videos, I can see it's going to be fun.
It is actually a good time to learn how to do stuff on your own. It feels really good after you struggle a bunch to get the job done! Good luck and let me know how it goes!
best thing about chrisfix is that he has 1.5 million subscribers and still answer tons of comments not like other youtubers who ull find having 200k subscribers and say he has alot so he can't reply
Xx_BOB_xX true!!
I love how you keep improving your videos! Compared to your older versions, this one is super streamlined and efficiently edited. Thank you
QUESTION-- Does anyone have any additional tips?
Drum to Disc Brake Conversion: COMING SOON!
where is it :(
Looking for the same thing
Disk to drum disc Conversion!
Drum to Disc conversion?
Disc to drum conversion 3:D
I think he deleted it, I believe I've seen that video when he did upload it.
Thanks alot chris im studying to be a good mechanic someday, I will never forget you😁👍
After watching Chris do the front wheel bearing video, I got real brave and did both of mine. Compared to that beast, doing the rear drums seems like a birthday party.
That's awesome! And yeah this is easier haha
Chris, you are a teacher! Thank you very much for your great video. I have always been impressed with your enthusiasm to share knowledge with people, and I can't neglect to tell you how much I appreciate it.
Hey Chris don't forget to change your blinker fluid before winter hits us it could be dangerous with bad blinker fluid
DevilishModz I think he would be more worried about rotating from summer air to winter air in the tires as winter air gives more traction on snow and ice filled roads.
don't forget autumn air for those wet leaf filled roads in october.
Thanks for the tip! I have a video on that here: ua-cam.com/video/E6GsXhBb10k/v-deo.html
Don't forget to grease your muffler bearings. Lol
I am studying in a technical college .our teachers shows your videos as examples. Everyday we watch your videos everyday .thank you chris 💕
Rear brakes are used about 20% of the time but also depends on how you drive such as you do a lot of hauling in a truck or towing. I love doing drum brakes they're not around much anymore. Surprised you didn't mention to back off the self adjuster through the access port in the back of the backing plate. That's another way to get the drum off
Seeing this makes me really appreciate my disk brakes lol
Rikster Me too. I'm cringing watching him do this job.
Most cars still use drum hardware inside the rear rotor for the parking brakes unless you have it on the caliper like on those new calipers he bought. I have seen those parking brake shoes for disc brakes wear out or the brake material gets cracked or even separate off of the shoe on older vehicles.
haha which is why we will be doing a conversion!
why? he did such a good job. when i replace drum brakes its not nearly as good as him.
ChrisFix hey chris did you already made a video of the drum brake conversion ?
Chris, What makes me love these brake videos even more is the fact I just picked up a 2000 Ford Ranger and these apply exactly to what I’m doing. Thanks for the content.
dude, you're a lifesaver, thank you so much for making these videos
Drums are more annoying than anything else
I just spent 6 hours on one because I couldn’t fit the drum back on. Turns out I just needed to squeeze the shoes in while fitting the drum on. Dang it lol
most underrated comment
They also last several times longer than rotor style brakes
@@juc3eoncs32 don't get me wrong. I love my drums. However working on em is a different story
Yeah just learned that on my truck
You make some of the most detailed and complete videos on this kinda stuff out there!
I DIG YOUR ENERGY. I turned wrenches for a living many years ago and I still find you're
videos entertaining and informative.
Juan Cabeza I hear you. I try to edit my videos the same way.
The mech a nic
I dont know man!... Chris is doing a great job so far!...
If Chris stop doing his videos then I'll gladly jump straigh to your channel.
I respectfully pass on this one this time sir!
Juan Cabeza you can watch as many channels as you want. Also he isn't asking you to view his channel.
Chaos Descent
Thanks for the info!
Chaos Descent thanks for clearing that up.yes you can subscribe to as many channels as you'd like.
After I did the rear brakes, I usually start to back up slowly and apply the brakes. This helps the self-adjusters to adjust. I am an old man and that was how I was taught back in 1969 which has worked for me all these years.
Drum to Disc Brake Conversion where is that video ?
why would you want to do that
Disc brakes offer much better stopping power than drum brakes and they don't cost much more than drums. Maintenance of disc brakes is much easier too. There's no reason in this day and age to bother with drum brakes.
The only reason we even see drum breaks is because car companies mass produce vehicles and drum brakes are cheaper
looking to do a DJ5 drum conversion and waiting on your input.
Stfu
Hell yeah nice^^
On a 1948 Fleetmaster Sedan which I own, I'm gonna do the conversion from Drum to Disc brake. Older cars are real heavy, I have to pump a couple of times on the brake pedal to stop & the car swirls. I just want a peace of mind, that's only reason I'm converting it to Disc brakes.
I hate my drum brakes in the morning the dew or the high humidity makes him squeak and sometimes lock up.
Never had any issue with the rear drums on my two Toyota Tacoma’s. They’re really good at stopping quickly with a load in the bed or when I’m towing my boat.
How to replace drum brakes:
1. Find aftermarket kit of disk brakes for originally axle with drum brakes
2. Remove drum brakes
3. Smash em with hammer, burn em, pour acid on em
4. Install disk brakes kit
lol
How to replace back brakes on a 1994 Ford f150
I ALWAYS (and I recommend you also watch multiple videos of the same fix.) Yet this guy has been consistently the best (to my acutual experience under the car), gives more tips, covers multiple scenarios, and the videos are consice.
The fact that in 2017 a brand new Toyota Tacoma still has drum brakes.
Patrick Dow fr man, 08 Silverado 2wd is the Sams way while my 2000 suburban has discs all the around
No way! Your kidding?
Patrick Dow seriously Wow!
Patrick Dow they claim that the reason why they put drums in the rear is for you don't have to worry about your rotors and disc brake pads getting screwed up and they claim that sand doesn't get inside the drums well that is a big lie LOL. But anyways that's what they claim
Do_it_with_Zane_117's_vlog's It's their way of saying cost cutting.
Most cars on my country have rear drum brakes, so this tutorial is really helpfull. Thanks Chris!!
Andrew Gamer PT what country?
+ford expedition Portugal
Chris, you are an excellent instructor.
Thanks Chrisfix. You're helping people almost 10 years later with this video.
You should do a series in an atv. Even if you don't know much about them they probably aren't that different that cars. I would love it. I live how your videos are and you never leave me with questions. And I do have an atv that I would like to work on my self but sometimes when I'm doing more complicated stuff I don't because I do t know how to. Would love to see you do that
Great instructional video , no BS was right to the point and fast moving. Very good job Chris
Why people spend money on drugs? I always catch a buzz after I fix my car, yep! Thanks Chris, you are narcos too!
Haha I agree! It is an awesome feeling!

Thank you so very very much for this detailed step by step video on how to change the drums! Here in the last month I've been having to do repair work on my own Toyota sienna. Gas prices are so high and repair costs have gone up. I am 60 years old and just a couple days ago, I replaced the two complete replacement headlights and front brake pads. Now I have to change the drums and I'm going to get a whole kit so that way the back side will be completely new. And your video has shown me excellent details on how to repair this!
hot wings just got done Chris fix video just came out yeahhhhh perfect timing
Nathan Bennett best combo in the world, hot wings + an awsome movie or show
Dang, that is perfect! Save me some!
hey can you do a video on how to super clean your engine bay
Righttttt
Tony Fernandez cover your wires and MAF sensor with a plastic bag them spray lightly with all purpose cleaner them wash then dry
Don't spray hard light spray water 💦
ok noted, thank you very much. ill try and do it tomorrow
Asked him this same question about 4 months ago, got a reply from him saying he'll do it soon but nope, nothing yet!
Thanks. I'll definately be using this cause I haven't touched my drum brakes in the year I've owned my 94 Cavalier and I'm pretty sure they're shot cause they refuse to lock no matter how hard I pull the E-Brake.
Sending love and respect from the Navajo Nation! Living on the reservation we don’t have a lot of mechanics or garages. These videos have taught me so much and saved me $$$!
Ahe’hee(thank you) Chris!
Glad the videos are helpful!!!
Still waiting on that drum brake conversion video........
Grow up.
But wouldn't we also need a video on how to install a parking brake ? You lose that with the drum brake conversion.
He replied to a comment a month ago saying he still needs to make the video, but needs to finish the Del Sol first so he has a backup daily driver.

Well done mate, best drum replacement video I've seen. I like the way you just keep moving forward and explain things well. Keep up the good work mate, cheers.
Best video I've found on doing drum brakes. Thank you. Tonight I started the rear drums on my '37 Buick Special. First time doing brakes, and so far it's as easy as the video.
Thanks a lot! Let me know how it goes!
