    Being retired with lots of idle time on my hands, I thought I would give the violin a try. There are hundreds of violins on the market priced in that "beginner" segment so it is confusing to say the least on what to buy. I know this is an older review (6 years ago) but Cecilio is still making this instrument and I can only assume they have honed their craft. After seeing the smile on your face after playing this violin and knowing you an accomplished violinist, I think you have helped me find my next purchase. Thank you for the honest review and your explanation of the "voice" of the instrument.

    Thank you for the wonderful review. After contemplating the CVN 100 and 300 for a couple weeks now, this review decided it for me. I plan to use it for a long time, so paying a little extra for the better quality is worth it. I just ordered the Cecilio CVN 300.

    Thank you very much for this review - I have decided on purchasing this violin and your review is one of the reasons why. I am a beginner and didn't want to break the bank until I'm sure I will stick with it - I didn't want to buy total garbage either, so this seems the best! Very nice to have reviews done by someone who actually knows violins and actually plays - I found some reviews from people who freely admitted they knew nothing of violins!

    Alison I bought this violin on Amazon for $120 as a kit!! I couldn't believe what I got; a beautiful violin, a tuner, a case, two bows, rosin, shoulder rest and a beginner book!! An incredible value for any beginner. Its well set up, prelude strings and ready to play!!!

    I just bought this one for entry level after looking at many reviews. $129 shipped from Amazon. This one had the highest ratio of reviews over 4 stars. Includes all that is mentioned in the vid and a tuner too. I can't wait!

      +Benny Davi Hello! Now that I am getting better at it, I am enjoying it more. For a while it sounded like nails on a chalkboard, but the lady in the videos said in another tutorial that you will probably sound terrible for a while. Sounding passable seems to be mostly technique and practice and not so much the violin itself. Also, for a cheaper violin, it seems to stay in tune for a long time. I am not fiddling with the tuning all that much. I had a chance to play with more intermediate violins a few weeks ago, and the flaws I noticed in my violin are: 1. The hair on the bow seems to be of a lesser quality. 2. This violin feels heavier than others. The other violins I tried all stayed up comfortably under my chin, while this one is heavy and wants to droop down. The included shoulder pad might work for you, but I am going to buy another style, like the everest shoulder rest. That one seems to work well with the violins I tried. Less droop.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  8 років тому +1

      +Carlos Roots I totally agree, but it is one of the things that come with a cheap violin. Its great to get you started without buying a load of crap or spending a fortune in case you dont stick with it so its a great one before you move onto something more intermediate - plus, you can now notice what YOU might want in your next violin!

    My first violin I bought off of Amazon, and it worked great for me as a beginner, and I recommend it to see if this is something you want to do so you don't waste a ton of money only to find out this is not your instrument. The only things I hate about it is the pegs at times don't want to stay in place, making it harder to tune it and the low-quality sound of the instrument, but what do you expect for something that cheap? After practicing so much and getting better, it was time to upgrade to a FiddlerMan Concert violin.

    Your videos are top notch. They’re so clear and direct. Being an absolute beginner, I started piano/keyboard when I was in the seventh grade and that died out that year. Having videos like yours has helped tremendously. Out of the violins you do you recommend two kinds, out of those two brands which one do you like more? Or which one would you recommend more?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor

    Thank you so much for doing your videos and reviews. I wanted to learn to play so bad but went super cheap buying a violin from guitar center and just ended up wasting money because the violin would not hold a tune 😞. I just purchased this violin as I'm a beginner and didn't want to spend too much in case I decided it wasn't for me. Your videos have helped me so much as I'm self teaching, I'm super excited to keep learning more!! :D thank you for doing what you do, you are awesome!! • @averyvolk3022
    @averyvolk3022 10 років тому +12

    So, it's fairly common for new violins to slip out of tune, right? Did you have trouble keeping this one in tune? Mine is slipping out constantly and making it really hard to practice, and I am afraid if I keep having to tune it too much the strings might break. I don't know if they will be able to help me out in the music shop I got my rental from, and the luthiers here (there are only two with identifiable locations) are really far from me...plus if they tell me I need parts modified/replaced I may not be able to afford it. So, I'm going to see what I can do tomorrow, but in the meantime do you have any specific recommendations?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  10 років тому +5

      Ashley Miller push the pegs in a little as you turn them and yes, you need to tune the violin each time you play it - thats the only thing with all stringed instruments. I might also buy some peg drops as it will help keep the violin in tune. A luthier wont tell you replace anything (or shouldn't do) as the violin is worth so little, it would counterproductive. Get peg drops and push them in as you tune and go from there. Replacing the factory strings it came with might help also as they are only the standard factory ones, so even if you spent a little amount like D'Addario Preludes, they would help as they are better quality - this in turn would also way improve the sound of the violin too, so its a double whammy!! :))

    • @averyvolk3022
      @averyvolk3022 10 років тому +3

      It came with D'addario Preludes on it already though? hehe but I know what you mean. It's actually getting better at staying in tune though since yesterday. Thanks darling! 😄❤

      Ashley Miller of course it does, sorry i forgot that is does! Well if you bought it very recently, then is will go hugely out of tune for a while before it settles, but thats violin life im afraid.

    Allison, you're my go to person on violins :) and I have a problem. I've watched both of your reviews on the Mendini violin ($63) and the Cecilio violin (this one). I'm going to go buy one. However, I don't know which one to get. Price isn't a factor, it's more of a personal preference. I think the Mendini violin has a slightly deeper and richer tone (which I actually like) compared to the Cecilio, but the Cecilio violin is pricier. Does that mean the Cecilio violin is better? Being someone who's played both, which violin do you think is better? Which is your personal favorite? Which one would you suggest? After having them for awhile now, has there been any problems with either one? I'm sorry for all the questions :( I just really want to get more information on the violins before picking. Your reply would be greatly appreciated :)

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  10 років тому +1

      hands down CVN300.
      The mendini range is their sort of 'budget' range if you like so you will get what you [ay for. Whilst the mendinis are good and serve a purpose, the CVN300 is always my 'go to' violin to recommend as it sits at the top of my list out of the CVN100, 200, MV200, 300, 400 and 500 so it basically pips all those to the post.
      Buy the CVN300 - SOOooooo worth the extra moola and you will be pleased when it arrives..... :))
      If you you go to buy, would you mind terribly if you use this link to Amazon as i do get a few dollars commission goo.gl/viikfN :))))

    • @BboySapphire
      @BboySapphire 10 років тому

      Ohhh thank you :) sure, I wouldn't mind using the link :D just one last question though, does the violin come already assembled? I've heard from a few people that violins off of Amazon usually comes with the bridge separately, and so you would need to fix it yourself.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  10 років тому +1

      Eagle Xiong No problem. Thats what im here for.
      I have the entire range as i mentioned before and not a single violin needed any 'assembly' to it.
      The only thing they needed was tuning - but every single violin in the world needs tuning as you are probably aware.

    Just picked mine up at the post office! And I already broke a sting and its the G of all strings to break, but I learned my lesson tuned them all properly and nearly broke my thumb trying to get those pesky pegs in. I'm just doing the open string exercise right now already feel comfortable with 1-3, But I'm a little nervous playing it and my bowing arm is a little shaky, also can't seem to go fast enough on 4 will keep working on it but I will practice at going slow and make my way up. Hopefully in about a month I will be able to perform the first song in your book keep an eye out ;)

    Dear and most Admired Alison: I keep watching your videos, and I like them a lot. My daughter has been learning for a year now, she is 6 years old and got her first exam, where she got excellent comments. She currently has a very low-quality violin 1/8 size, she should be moving to 1/4 now. Would it be good to get CVN300 1/4? The CVN-300 and Stentor II (1500) are about the same price over here, and CVN-500 is about 10% more. Thanks in advance for the time.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  4 роки тому +1

      At that size its not going to matter much, but if I had to choose then the SII are really good in smaller sizer - better than their full size counterpart in my opinion.

    I intend on ordering this violin, I'm a total beginner, never even picked one up before. Some of the reviews on amazon say you need to have this violin professionally set up after receiving. Did you have to get this one set up or did it come basically perfect out of the box?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  9 років тому +2

      +Gary Jones Im not sure what they are talking about - you just get it out the box and play! if you want a professionally set up violin, the you need to be paying well over the $500 mark. I think what people forget, and as a result are quick to poo poo, are cheap violins, which claim to be nothing other than what they are! You have to expect a $130 violin for $130!
      The reviews on Amazon are not always great because folks generally expect a $1,000 violin for $130 and they cant play it - so they blame the violin! Does it sound like crap when I play it....??

    • @op-1kenobi568
      @op-1kenobi568 9 років тому +1

      Ha. Awesome. Thanks for the info. I see that all the time on Amazon. People buy cheap stuff and expect a top shelf product. If the $130 violin plays and sounds like a $130 violin I will be satisfied. I really just wanted something playable, at a reasonable price to see if this is something I even want to pursue, then I will upgrade to something nicer. I've been playing guitar for years but have been very interested in expanding my musical horizons. =] Anyway, thanks again..

    This violin looks beautiful!! Your review is wonderful and I’m seriously considering buying it! (I have never played violin, but it looks like a great place to start). I have been reading reviews on this, and have noticed people noting that the pegs slip a lot when tuning, and sometimes pushing them in doesn’t help. There have also been lots of complaints about the rosin not working. What is your opinion on this?

    I have been interested in playing the violin for a while and I'm quite experienced with instruments because I have played the Guitar for 7+ years, Piano, and quite a few other instruments. The two types of violins I'm interested in is this one and the Stentor 1500. I really want the Stentor but I don't know if I should spend so much money on it and then just not end up playing it at all. I'm so torn between which to invest in. Can you let me know your opinion on which to buy?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  8 років тому

      +Chloe Duvak
      Well its up to you - buy a better violin and you will have more success as the instrument wont hold you back, but buy cheaper to 'test the water' so to speak and potentially give up because the instrument isnt as nice.
      I would go in in the middle and buy something decent to get you going without breaking the bank.
      I assume your current guitar is a nice one if you have been playing for 7+ years, so what would YOU recommend guitar-wise to me for example? You would give me something decent, not too cheap, but satisfactory for me to get started on without getting annoyed about the guitar being crap. Even though I have 30+ years on the violin and im professional, the same rules apply to me. I want to try it out, and im happy to invest eventually, but need something not too crap, but not too expensive....

    How do you feel about this violin's bridge? This is still the one I am learning with and I have found it pretty agreeable so far; I just thought to ask this question since in your video on eliminating scratch and squeak you mention the possibility of getting better results by replacing the bridge. So as far as this particular violin goes, do you think a "better" bridge would make a significant difference? :)

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  9 років тому

      Ashley Miller possibly, but probably not that much difference that its worth getting a new/better bridge and paying to get it installed. Bridges dont come already made im afraid. They come in a standard shape and size and then you have to fit them to the new violin. You cant just 'pop' it in and start playing as the angle of the top will not be sloping correctly and the bridge will be too high and the feet will be too flat, so they need to be shaped too.It can be a bit of a palava.
      Having said all that what I would do is get some Dominant strings and voilla, you will get a clean, better and more responsive violin!

    I'm going to start taking violin lessons next week at my community college and my parents got me a black Stentor harlequin violin. I heard kinda not so good reviews about it online and I was wondering if I should order a different set of strings for it or just order the CVN 300 for the next semester? What would you suggest?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  8 років тому

      I would not choose the S.Harlequin as yes, I agree it is very poor. I would go with either the CVN300 or Stentor II. If you can add Dominant strings on it, then you will be good to go.

  • @ThePurrcupine

    I took violin as a child and wanted to pick it back up some 30 years later, as a hobby knowing I'll likely never play for anyone. I need to go cheap but don't want the quality of the instrument to make learning harder since I know I'll lose interest if it seems harder than it should be. In other words, I need to make sure it's as fun and enjoyable as it can be since I have no other motivations. With that in mind would you discourage a Mendini in favor of a Cecilio, or would it make that much of a difference?

      The Online Piano and Violin Tutor Good question! LOL I keep going back & forth because past experience with other instruments just tells me that I'd be much happier with a mid-range, but I think for starters I should keep it at a max of $200, to include books and replacement strings if needed. Something I wouldn't have to invest too much in but not be ashamed to donate to a younger student if I lost interest or decided to upgrade.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  10 років тому +1

      Sooz icle Well if you want to go straight in there, the Cecilio CVN 500: goo.gl/K0f2tx is at the higher end but is a superb violin for the price and you will not be disappointed. If you want something a little less, then there is the Cecilio CVN 300: goo.gl/viikfN Whilst this is a nice violin, its sill a student quality one, you may find that although its nice, you can tell you want something better, which is where the 500 comes in, but then again it is another $60 more.

    I got one of these a couple of months ago to learn on. Generally, I'm quite happy, but I have a concern with the Prelude strings you seem to like so much. I find that the A and E sound fine, but the D and G are a different matter. Going from the A to the D, for example, I find the tone changes completely -- it's not only lower in pitch (of course!), but also sounds flabbier and tubbier. It also seems "looser," in that increasing or decreasing the pressure on the bow stroke changes the note's pitch as well as its (expected) volume. The G is similar. Is this discrepancy in tone between the high and low strings typical of Preludes, or did my CVN 300 come with a defective set (or, God forbid, did the factory fit it with generic Cecilio/Mendini strings by mistake)? And, if that discrepancy IS typical, can you mention some reasonably-priced strings that don't have that issue?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  8 років тому

      Im not sure what you are talking about, but Prelude strings do not sound like this. I most certainly do NOT mean this rudely in any way at all, but it could possibly be that you are new to the violin and it could be your technique. I might give them a little more time before you go ploughing more money into more strings. What you also have to bear in mind, is that you only have a CVN300 and you will only get so much from it, so I wouldnt waste too much time, money and strings trying to perfect something that wont really get much better than it is. Its why I recommend either Preludes or Dominants (Preludes are a little cheaper i believe) because all you will get from better stings is a smoother and more consistent play. Thats it. If you want tone and flavour, you need to spend way more on a better violin.

    ok. I'm on a VERY tight budget and going crazy trying to choose a violin fir my daughter. she played a little in 5th grade and decided she wanted to continue but it wasn't offered at school anymore. now she is 14 /7th grade and is enrolled at the school for the arts. I have to supply her everything down to the books. i found a mendini cv 400 on Amazon for $109. reviews were 50/50. said the bows are poor quality and some other stuff. I watched this review and the mendini 300 also you posted. What is your suggestion? I have to get her the following on a buget, but is it worth paying more now, or paying less and upgrading in say a couple years?
    violin,case, bow,extra strings,cloth, rosin cake, essential elements 2000 books #1-#2, mute/silencer, music book stand, fret markers, and possibly a bow buddy for finger placement but idk. THANKS for your help . ANY and All suggestions appreciated asap!

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  9 років тому

      +ashley monzo Well if you need cheap, I would get the most expensive violin you can possibly afford - whatever that may be. I wouldnt go as low as you can just buy one as you will be being total rubbish. I have reviews on the entire Cecilio/Mendini range so you can watch a video review on demos and my thoughts. The playlist is linked under any violin video. I cant tell you which exact one to choose as thats up to you, but go as high as you can for the violin as thats the most important thing.
      - The violin will come with rosin (the Cecilio and Mendini ones do at least) as well as a case and bow and possibly extra strings if you can find the packages on Amazon with them in.
      - A cloth is easy to get anywhere as i use those yellow duster cloths to cover my violin up as they dont leak fibres all over the place.
      - Mutes are $1-2.
      - You might be able to find a 2nd hand stand on Ebay.
      - You dont need fret markers as I have a free video on where to place stickers: ua-cam.com/video/g9O814LUhTo/v-deo.html
      - As for the bow buddy, that would be a total no no for me as that is crossing the line a bit to far between the student learning and the student having something that hinders them and makes them lazy - that is MY opinion as a teacher though.
      Hope all that helps :)

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  11 років тому

      its fine to mix strings. As long as they are good quality, then all will be well. Its when you have a nice set of say dominants or pirastros or d'adds then mix them with a $2 string for example that you will notice a difference.
      You will cause no harm, but you will hear the inferior sound coming from that cheaper string compared to the better ones you have on there.

    Hello! I've been interested in taking violin lessons for a really long time, and finally there is a chance I might be able to now. I have watched several videos in your channel in order to know a little about the violin before I start playing and I think that I might buy the Cecilio CVN 300. I found that the CVN 300 can come in different colors, which I quite liked but, I'm worried from the reviews that because it is a colored violin the sound quality is really bad even for a beginner. Even though they are the same version would color versions be of different quality from the one you are reviewing in this video?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  9 років тому

      +Star Gazer No, they will be the same as the coloured ones are based on the CVN300 (there is also a Mendini coloured range too, so dont get that confused.
      What you have to bear in mind when you read reviews on this violin is that people either expect it to play and perform like a $1,000 violin and or, they just cant play it and therefore get annoyed when it sounds like crap lol. Do I sound crap when I play it? Even though I appreciate you cant play like me, if I can make the violin sound nice, then it does have the capability of sounding nice and there is your answer.
      Anyway, if I were YOU, I would throw in another $30 ish and get this instead: goo.gl/K0f2tx

    Hello Alison! I am thinking about upgrading my violin. I am about a grade 3, what instrument do you believe would best suit an advancing player out of the Cecilio and Mendini range? I was thinking either the MV500 or CVN300, but that's just my opinion. What's your opinion on the violin I should buy?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  9 років тому +1

      Beau Jones No, in my personal opinion, the MV500 or CVN300 are beginner violins. You will want something like the CVN500 or even 600 if you can, as you will soon be at a higher-intermediate level. If you are around grade/level 3 now, you should be playing on nothing less than an MV500 or CVN300.
      Just my opinion, but if you dont get a violin that will respond to your advancing techniques, you will greatly suffer and wonder why you just cant improve, which is where the CVN500/600 comes in...

      You could get either or - not much noticeable difference. I would however, which ever violin you buy, get Pirastro Tonica strings and replace the factory strings asap as it will make a huge difference in the sound and playability of the violin/strings. The bow wont have to work as hard.

      *Reaper The EAV is the only one in the entire collection I do not have, so Im not sure what to say really? Sorry. My comments on the 300 are the same as in the video, but im totally useless to you right now lol. From what i have read, its just an antiqued finish, so if i had to 'guess' i would say its based on the cvn300, with just a different finish. Cecilio have done that before where their coloured violin/electric acoustic violins are based on the 300 with a different finish etc etc.
      Im just guessing remember, but it wouldnt surprise me if they were both the 300, but the eav had an antique finish...

      *Reaper I would buy some better strings. Dominants if you can. Other accessories, are up to you. They are not life or death, so i would buy them as and when you need them.

    plz give a good close up of the violin next time. And plz talk about the prize of your own violin, and the quality difference. The forenza videos had great sound (perhaps due to diff camera or it was hall).

      This is a violin review of a particular brand so i prefer not to involve my violin which no-one can buy anyway so its a little pointless.
      Close-ups can be found on the websites of the brands from the links under the videos.

    Hello. I'm trying to get back into the violin after not playing for about 10 years. I think this is the one I'm going to get, but I have a question regarding the bridge. Is it notched? If it isn't would you recommend having a luthier notch it? Does it impact the playability of the instrument?

      Im not sure what you mean by notches if im honest? Its probably a question for a luthier as its more their area of expertise really - not mine so much. I could google it and do some research, but its still not really my area of knowledge and i dont want to spout utter rubbish to you lol :))

      I played in school, and every instrument I played had shallow notches in the bridge for the strings to sit in. I thought this was normal, but I'm coming to see it might not be. I'm assuming there is no such thing on the Cecilio. Thank you for honestly telling me you weren't sure as opposed to giving me information that might not have been correct.

      Literary Romantic well all bridges are slightly different and some have slight notches where the strings go than others - and it usually on the e string where it digs in. Im really not convinced it matters too much, but thats about all my knowledge on that extends too on that...

    I really do want to buy this Violin I have wanted to learn Violin ever since I was little. But I'm not sure if I should because I live out in the country and theirs no one to teach me. Do you think I could learn by watching your videos reading books and practicing by myself? Or is it one of those you have to be shown by a professional to learn how?

      I'm not sure. it depends on what kind of learner you are. if you learn very quickly and you're patient then you should be fine learning by yourself. if not, then I would still give it a try and if you can't you should try taking lessons. I'm not sure if this helped because you commented that 1 year ago.
