I worked in the music industry in LA for 30 years. The packaging costs, licensing costs, royalties, shipping costs, etc of box sets is enormous. If someone thinks they're a cash grab - there are better ways to grab cash. Box sets are normally assigned to a qualified person or producer who puts them together with love and respect, and usually fights with the label over costs to keep the quality top notch.
@@arthurspoony7987 Box sets, to do them right, are very expensive. Working at a pressing plant in Europe is not the same as working with major labels, managing artists and handling artist releases and budgets, marketing and tour strategies, dealing with label presidents and VPs, attorneys, etc. Box sets are expensive to make. Period.
My favorite box of the year is Joe Strummer. Probably not audiophile enough, but the music is what is important and its fantastic. 3 very expensive albums for $160 +demo’s & outtakes. Blondie also a great collection of amazing music
We’re getting so much great music and great packaging it’s as close to being back when this stuff was brand new! So many options, such great music and such great art! A cash grab-ha! I’m loving it all over again!
When I purchased the Wilco boxset and played it, I was quite impressed with the audio-quality. Hearing that is compared to the Original really made my day. In addition, delighted it made the Top Ten list of 2022.
my favourite 2022 box was the PYRAMIDS - "Aomawa" 4LP box set. Incredible tribal and spiritual jazz of the coolest standard from the early 70s!!! Very affordable and wonderful
I had contact with Idris Ackamoor on his European Tours in 1984. But was never able to get my hands on the Pyramids records. Now ordered the CD Box set on Amazon.
My top 5: 1. Albert Ayler - Revelations (the one I listened to the most this year. It would be interesting if you make a comparison with the "originals" -the originals are not complete-, both sound excellent, although very different.) 2. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (super deluxe) 3. The Beatles - Revolver (the book is fantastic!) 4. Blondie - Against the Odds (super deluxe) 5. Ornette Coleman - Round Trip (especially because it includes beautiful editions of At the Golden Circle) I have not received my Harvest yet…
Michael, can you please consider making a new tour of your records and system now at the end of the year? The camera was shaking an aweful lot on the last record tour. Cheers!
Just got back for a Michael 45 inspired shopping spree at my local FNAC store after watching this video. Got the beautiful Neil Young Harvest boxset + the Blondie one… and some krautrock I have heard Michael mention in the past: - Mask by Bauhaus (which I listening to now. Interesting!!!) - Tago Mago by Can Also got the Steely Dan’s Can’t buy a cheap thrill + Nick Drake’s Pink Moon + Nick Cave’s Push the sky away. Addictive, this hobby :-) Expensive too :-( Thank you for the inspiration and information, Michael !
I had hoped that M45 would have bought that set but he indicated early on that he was not interested. Would be nice to get his opinion on how the albums sound on his Einstein gear!
Can you share the process used to create the pressings? Analog, digital? I need to secure better pressings of a few of the releases, and have wondered if the box is the way to go. Thanks.
@@LifelongMusicJunkie Thanks. I watched. Very informative and sounds like lots of high res files were used....which isn't the end of the world. I've checked out a couple of reviews....sounds like it was well done. Thanks again.
My vote is for The Kinks box set is best of 2022, with Honorable Mention for Queen Studio Collection repress. Box sets are often not cash grabs because often they’re cheaper than buying separately.
Hi Michael - Two boxed sets made my Top 20 releases of the year (I didn’t buy 10 sets - close!) - one was the Blondie, the other was Tall Dwarfs - Unravelled: 1981-2002. On the topic of cash grabs, Tall Dwarf Chris Knox’s debilitating stroke a number of years ago brought this fascinating and beautiful New Zealand duo to an end. And they both deserve every nickel made from the release - and listeners deserve to hear the set’s thorough overview of their career. I will share my top 20 at the conclusion of your year-end videos. A sneak peek is available now on the Easy Synesthesia podcast on Mixcloud.
The Vinyl Me Please Willie Nelson box set is outstanding. The selection of albums is great and the mastering and sound quality is great. I also love the Revolver box set. I have the Tom Petty Live Anthology box set, so I am teetering on whether to purchase the Fillmore Box set. Is it worth it? Off topic, but are you going to compare the Mofi 1 Step of I Robot? I have the UK and US first pressings as well as the Mofi 45 RPM version. The new 1Step is excellent, although I have a hard time deciding if the UK first pressing or the 1 Step is better. I Robot is one of my favorite albums since I purchased it in 1977 when I was 19 and in College.
For those into 80s metal, the Swiss band Celtic Frost put out a cracking boxset which encompasses their first three fantastic albums. Well worth checking out if that is your choice of music.
Re: Blondie Box Set, I'm going to pull the same hat trick I did last year with "Brilliant Adventures" and order with the rewards points I've been stock piling on Amazon ;-) in January. So in '22 I acquired "Brilliant Adventures" from Bowie, "The Essential Album Collection, Vol. 1" from Popol Vuh (to keep Vol 2 company) and "Miscellany" from Chris Carter, and the Ornette Coleman box set. Recently scored a mint, unsealed box set "Beethoven: The Five Piano Concertos" Vladimir Ashkenazy w/ Chicago Symphony Orchestra & George Solti on London.

Agree about Blondie and Revolver but I’d have included Older by George Michael. An iconic record, never released before on vinyl and a beautiful Boxset. A-ha, True North and Joni Mitchell, The Asylum Years would also have snuck into my top 10.
Thank you for such an erudite, informative, and entertaining video. I concur - the Grateful Dead box set IS heavy! The robust, purpose-designed packaging used to ship the product is a work of art in itself.
I remember seeing the blondie box announced. It looks really well put together. If I was into the music more I would have bought it. For me Celtic Frost : Dance Macabre was my favourite box this year.
My #1 is 'I Am The Moon' by Tedeschi-Trucks Band, 4 lp, art prints, booklet, tt mat, signed, limited to 2500. The box itself is die cut and textured, it's just beautiful, and of course a fantastic12 piece band. Honorable mention to Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros. For reference, out of your list I have The Dead, T. Petty, YHF, Revolver, and Harvest. Great video, thanks!
Blondie, Wilco, George Micheal, The Kinks and Neu were my five boxes for the year - Blondie is the standout, Numero Group did a great job on that, a real labor of love. Not sure if the deluxe version of Animals counts as a box, but I enjoyed that too. The Beatles missed out as they could have included surround sound disc, just like they did with the previous releases, but they chose to put it on a streaming service - shame as the book and everything else was excellent as always. The Quincy Jones one was cool but VMP included The Wiz for some reason, but that is a lovely set and VMP are upping their game all the time.
It's really such awesome boxsets u got in 2022 and my favourite Boxset of the year goes to " Guns N' Roses, 'Use Your Illusion I & II Super Deluxe' Boxset "
Hi Michael, thanks for the great video. I really admire the diversity of your music taste. Totally agree on the Revolver box. On the one hand one the most influential records of all time, on the other hand a very impressive remix of the stereo take. I’m getting goosebumps when listening to Eleanor Rigby 😇 Thanks and long live vinyl ✌️, Chris
Thanks. I am far from having bought as many box sets this year. This was a great overview. I would have added the PJ Harvey one. I know this is all vinyl but i Think that one of the overall astonishing box sets was the Fripp Exposure one. Anyway Thanks again. I may look into getting one or two more after your review.
Ordinarily I am not a Boxset guy, because I never listen to the demos and extras and just prefer the albums with maybe a booklet and some stuff like that. So given my preference to pick a boxset for a showcase of their entire "project", I could not resist The Alan Parsons Project boxset with all 11 albums, a signed print, a poster and a beautiful book that explains each album as you listen along. Amazing boxset and remastered by Miles Showell using half-speed mastering. Since I have started collecting vinyl again after a 30+ year hiatus, I view APP as the quintessential band that sounds great on vinyl! Maybe because Alan Parsons is The Man behind so many great recordings in his illustrious career. Cheers
Some great box sets Michael, My top 3 Harvest ,Kinks Beatles oh I have got Fleetwood Mac alternative box for Christmas yet to be played 😂. There has been some expensive box sets & some of great value too. The Kinks is amazing value currently,Revolver has come down £35 . The Tom Petty interests me but is currently around £165 for 6 Lp set.I can get the 3LP version for £50,perhaps that’s all I need for this release. Thanks for sharing Michael Great information & insight & thanks for the affiliated links 🙌👍
I absolutely love your videos, personality and strict passion for music in general. I identify with you so much. Glad to understand what a great journey you are on. I’m right there with you. I live for the music.
There are still few days left for it to be released but Walter Wegmuller "Tarot" box release of this Krautrock classic seems to be a great one. Would love to see your review of it.
Michael, I am not sure if you are not a classical music lover, but you over-looked the DG Mahler Second Cycle by Leonard Bernstein, truly fresh & original insight into Mahler’s symphonies. 16 LPs of the ten symphonies. BTW, the set retails between $3 - 500, while each original 1980’s album, sells on Discogs for $2- 300 in NM condition. Cheers, Philip
Great ranking. SUPERB VIDEO!👍🏻🙋🏼🎼🎵🎶🚀 Have No.1 indeed as vinyl and as CD for the quick listening. AND because the included hardbound books differ in their content. So if you are in Blondie ('s music and story and discography) to my mind a MUST!👍🏻❤️🙏🏻🙋🏼
Phish - Clifford Ball 12LP boxset was the sleeper of 2022. Tool - Fear Inoculum is stunning but was way overpriced initially. Rolling Stones El Mocambo was a treat as well
Hi Michael, I would add the following release in 2022 : Neil Young Official Release Series 12+13 + 20+21. Simply because of ELDORADO , never released in Europe / Germany as far as I know. Fantastic sound and a good add on to the other Box Sets of the ORS.
Hey Michael... thank you for the mention of the LAFMS VOD Box... yet again. Much appreciated. Great post and list, but I was wondering if you got the Joni Mitchell 10LP box of unreleased material... he catalogue reissue boxes are fantastic too. It's been a good year for Joni. Cheers for 2023!
enjoyed watching your best boxsets with regard price in ideal world i buy box sets but we have too cut our cloth according to our measure . Out of the 10 i got the kinks compact one on cd at 20 euro it was good value . The one i love would be the Beatles one on cd its 25 euro for the 2 discs i hope in the new year it go down in price .
So glad to see your interest in the Grateful Dead's vinyl releases! So many people don't take them seriously, regardless of their being a great live band (and sometimes great in the studio as well) and having a very high quality of official releases (including their cd as well as vinyl sets, btw). Given your other musical interests, I didn't peg you as someone who would necessarily hold them in any positive regard, but it seems you do, and given your discernment in vinyl matters, it's helpful to hear your feedback on their vinyl releases (plus those of so many others)..
When purchasing a box set, if the record is not in a poly archival sleeve what do you do as this may cause the box to be too wide? What do you do with the hype stickers, include them inside the box or outside or discard? P.S. - your company website is very good, consider matching your image here onto the website - good branding approach.
I got the vinyl Revolver super deluxe box set, but to be honest, it's more of an investment for the future than for casual listening. I had so many copies of Revolver in mono and stereo before this new box set, I will listen to those and preserve the new box in near mint condition. To listen to the new mix, I got the CD of just the album remixed, for my car stereo.
There are a couple of box sets I wish I could add to my collection, but I just can't justify spending the money... The Rolling Stones Singles 1963-1966 [7" Single Box Set]; and Paul McCartney The 7" Singles Box. Sometimes, when I already have all the music, I just have to draw the line and say 'no' to spending hundreds more dollars. But the devil on one shoulder is sticking his fork (all collectors know what I mean!).
@@barrymurphy1337 Yeah, that's what I wonder. You know all this bragging about 'all analogue' AAA, so I am assuming a somewhat limited run, wouldn't you think? But yes, it has to appreciate in value. We can check Discogs in 10 years and it should be up there in price. Unless no one wants The Beatles in ten years! LOL The kids don't know much about it.
I must admit I'm rather envious about that grateful Dead box set..lol I wonder if they're going to gradually release each one of those shows like as record store Day box sets?
Great boxes I only have 3 (despite buying way too many boxsets this year) Blondie, Wilco 11 lp, Dead 72 Lyceum Unless you count the earlier QRP pressed Bill Evans Riverside GD also had 2 RSD 72 europe boxsets How does the Kinks sound? Only bought the Blondie with all the extras, already have originals. The book is actually bigger in the extras box.. Album size and what a book it is. Goblin was quite a great Italian prog soundtrack boxset Joni Mitchell’s archive set 2 - up through Blue A Carnegie Hall concert where you can hear Joni’s piano reverberating in the hall. Norah Jones Come Away With Me extras were top tier stuff
I would love to have that Grateful Dead set👍Not sure I rank Revolver so high because the outtakes were pretty weak overall..Tom Petty would rank higher..Great pressings, so much music..👍❤glen
Box sets usually only make sense when it comes to first-time releases. Then the presentation, the artist's intention and the zeitgeist often fit together (at least if majors don't have their fingers in the pie). Everything else is usually pastiche or just about making money. Of course there are exceptions, such as completely out of print or lost albums/recordings. Or extraordinary musical bonus material. Unfortunately, the latter is very rare. An example of this is the "Sign O the times" box. As a rule, however, the bonus material is only good for a one-time listen (because the artists themselves had already decided at the time that it did not meet their requirements).
@@Z-eb Think he was just focusing on vinyl box sets. The CD one arrived last week and is cool, but I'm looking forward to the vinyl version from their website in January.
Nice line up Michael although I didn't buy any of them. I often don''t see the added value of all the extras. Of course this is just my 2 cent. That Zoviet France boxset looks great though.
I am lucky to have 2 teams in the WC. Unfortunately, USA, my team of adoption, is gone but we were happy enough they get out of the pool. My other team, France, team of birth, is playing tomorrow... wait and see. England is going to be a tough opponent. Just for fun, have you done the sum of the price of all box sets together? I mean all together we must be talking serious money. That brings me to a set of questions I would like you to think about, but only if that would be of interest to you of course: With such big and valuable collection: 1. what about safety? protection from potential damage, theft, etc. 2. is there any interest in getting insurance? knowing some records would never be replaced 3. (the most important one to me) Legacy. We are not getting any younger, so what happened after we pass away? Do we have loved ones who will keep and cherish this collection? Or are they just going to drop it at the thrift store or sell it on Facebook marketplace for a quick buck? OR could we donate the collection to some sort of library or museum or foundation who will take care of it and make sure people can enjoy? I'm leaning towards the last but I have no knowledge of such place in my area (and besides my collection so far is far smaller than yours) I would be really interested on your thoughts on the subject as I am sure it must have crossed your mind a few times. Thank you in advance.
Michael I think you missed out on one incredible boxset war give me five boxset 1971-1975. It's extraordinary: the box, the extras, the vinils and the music are all amazing. I prefere the mastering/pressing of this relative to the war greatest hits by kevin grey soundwise and the musics are complete like originally released. Paid 90 for mine thats less then 20 bucks a record and the sound quality is amazing. Audiophile amazing. It's a 2021 boxset
Very much on the fence about Revolver… especially the mono mix …I think I might just prefer the mono box set version… The new one is just a little to loud and a bit bright to my ears… Hope one day to pick up Harvest…
Another question is how do you have time to keep up with all this stuff due to all the hard work required to afford all this stuff. 🤣 Time is my greatest challenge…
Really dude. To another comment, I think in 10 years some of these companies will be testifying in front of congress for this crazy price gouging. No one loves music more than me and in my 73 years, it's just saddinng to see people hacking music. I'm so glad to have hundreds of first press. Lots between three and five dollars. I'm not dissing people who have the money to spare for what they want, ha but a full blown boycott would be interesting.
Box Sets = Cash Grabs, hmm probably. But no one forces you to buy a box set, you can always buy just the single album, I wanted Revolver but couldn't justify the cost of the box set so bought the basic album, but I did buy Eric Clapton's box set as I am a big EC fan. Box sets are great and for many the definitive version in a collection but in the current economic climate a box set can be out of reach financially. Great Video, love these 'Top 10' videos, totally subjective but fun nevertheless.
I have the Wilco one on the way - I saw the 2-disc version and grabbed it Thinking that was it - then discovered the 8CD version - I have to remember if there is a Deluxe Version there may be a Super Deluxe Version - I would never buy a vinyl box set.
Traceable ranking. Wilco would not be in my top 10, a lot of stuff but musically a lot of average and superfluous. For me, the Rolling Stones - Live at the El Mocambo would be in my Top 10. But undisputed No. 1 is Blondie. Belongs to the 3 best in my collection. No.2 for me Tom Petty - Live at the Fillmore, No. 3 Fleetwood Mac - The Alternate Collection.
VMP - The Story of Ghetto Records was a pleasant surprise for me. I didnt think I would get into it as much as I have. I guess you keep the vinyl in the box sets? I have been asking around to others about this - do I keep the records in the box (and thus, without a sleeve?) or do I sleeve them as normal but keep the boxes empty??
Good vid as usual. A service to the community. You not going for the 80 single box set of Paul McCartney? I don't think you are a 7 inch single collector, right?

Maybe because Alan Parsons is The Man behind so many great recordings in his illustrious career. Cheers
Revolver put out a few great looking box sets this year. Problem is, none of them have shipped! Type O Negative, Motorhead, Ghost, etc.
Oh my... I haven't bought a box set yet, so tempting :)
Some great box sets Michael,
My top 3 Harvest ,Kinks Beatles oh I have got Fleetwood Mac alternative box for Christmas yet to be played 😂.
There has been some expensive box sets & some of great value too.
The Kinks is amazing value currently,Revolver has come down £35 .
The Tom Petty interests me but is currently around £165 for 6 Lp set.I can get the 3LP version for £50,perhaps that’s all I need for this release.
Thanks for sharing Michael
Great information & insight & thanks for the affiliated links 🙌👍
First time watching your video… did such a fine job. I’ll be adding you!
Great ranking. SUPERB VIDEO!👍🏻🙋🏼🎼🎵🎶🚀
Have No.1 indeed as vinyl and as CD for the quick listening. AND because the included hardbound books differ in their content.
So if you are in Blondie ('s music and story and discography) to my mind a MUST!👍🏻❤️🙏🏻🙋🏼
Revolver box is very well done even for us complaining Beatle fans.
Hard to argue with Blondie at number 1, but the Joe Strummer would have been a nice addition to your list...
Phish - Clifford Ball 12LP boxset was the sleeper of 2022. Tool - Fear Inoculum is stunning but was way overpriced initially. Rolling Stones El Mocambo was a treat as well
El Mocambo and Fear Inoculum should be on any too 10 2022 list for sure.
Great video Michael and very excited about the AP European website but are still covering the blue note classic series?
VMP - Zamrock was my favourite box set of the year!
Repress imho
Hi Michael, I would add the following release in 2022 : Neil Young Official Release Series 12+13 + 20+21. Simply because of ELDORADO , never released in Europe / Germany as far as I know. Fantastic sound and a good add on to the other Box Sets of the ORS.
The older we are. the faster the years fly away just like the expanding universe. All those amazing box sets - where do you find the space??
Hello and - how you do find the time, even allowing for your videos to be recorded straight to camera with no edits.
I can't believe so many people got that Revolver box set for $15 due to Walmart screwing up! I looked at 13 different stores and couldn't find it.
Great channel. Keep up the good work!
When purchasing a box set, if the record is not in a poly archival sleeve what do you do as this may cause the box to be too wide? What do you do with the hype stickers, include them inside the box or outside or discard?
P.S. - your company website is very good, consider matching your image here onto the website - good branding approach.
Can we get a Worst Box-set of the Year list too? I guess Use Your Illusion should be in the Top 3!
great countdown and also a bit of a workout for you!!!
Celtic Frost: Dance Macabre/Beastie Boys:Check Your Head
Do you think the super deluxe set will appreciate in value in a similar way to the 2014 Mono box? I wonder what the print run was on it.
@@continentalginYeah, I have a copy sealed in its packaging box. I am very happy to own it, but if the price was right....😉
@@barrymurphy1337 Yeah, same here. Eventually, I will open it and play it all. I got the CD also, for my car.
I must admit I'm rather envious about that grateful Dead box set..lol I wonder if they're going to gradually release each one of those shows like as record store Day box sets?
Bleach Lab - Nothing Feels Real is my top pick for 2022. So under-rated and produced by STEPHEN STREET!
Great boxes
I only have 3 (despite buying way too many boxsets this year)
Blondie, Wilco 11 lp, Dead 72 Lyceum
Unless you count the earlier QRP pressed Bill Evans Riverside
GD also had 2 RSD 72 europe boxsets
How does the Kinks sound?
Only bought the Blondie with all the extras, already have originals. The book is actually bigger in the extras box.. Album size and what a book it is.
Goblin was quite a great Italian prog soundtrack boxset
Joni Mitchell’s archive set 2 - up through Blue
A Carnegie Hall concert where you can hear Joni’s piano reverberating in the hall.
Norah Jones Come Away With Me extras were top tier stuff
I would love to have that Grateful Dead set👍Not sure I rank Revolver so high because the outtakes were pretty weak overall..Tom Petty would rank higher..Great pressings, so much music..👍❤glen
There are some amazing sets there Michael , there is another big year coming next year .
The Neu Box !!! Also Flaming Lips Yoshima Boxset !!!!!!
Yoshimi comes out in January on vinyl
@@albertguffanti8414 not the 6 cd edition !
@@Z-eb Think he was just focusing on vinyl box sets. The CD one arrived last week and is cool, but I'm looking forward to the vinyl version from their website in January.
Mine was definitley the Faust 71-74 boxset, theyre really great pressings. Flat & Quiet, only wished they didnt use printed inner sleeves.
That brings me to a set of questions I would like you to think about, but only if that would be of interest to you of course:
With such big and valuable collection:
1. what about safety? protection from potential damage, theft, etc.
2. is there any interest in getting insurance? knowing some records would never be replaced
I'm leaning towards the last but I have no knowledge of such place in my area (and besides my collection so far is far smaller than yours)
I would be really interested on your thoughts on the subject as I am sure it must have crossed your mind a few times.
John Grant, Boy from Michigan #1
Very much on the fence about Revolver… especially the mono mix …I think I might just prefer the mono box set version…
The new one is just a little to loud and a bit bright to my ears…
Hope one day to pick up Harvest…
Much respect to your channel, quick question, how do you afford all this stuff???
Another question is how do you have time to keep up with all this stuff due to all the hard work required to afford all this stuff. 🤣
Time is my greatest challenge…
Really dude. To another comment, I think in 10 years some of these companies will be testifying in front of congress for this crazy price gouging. No one loves music more than me and in my 73 years, it's just saddinng to see people hacking music. I'm so glad to have hundreds of first press. Lots between three and five dollars. I'm not dissing people who have the money to spare for what they want, ha but a full blown boycott would be interesting.
Didn’t the Ornette Coleman Tone Poet box set come out in 2022? Or was that late 2021?
Hay Mike I'm a vapor too! What tank do you use a BRUNHILDE
Ich habe das Queen boxset irgendwie verschlafen. Kannst du vielleicht einen Link posten?
