I'm grateful to fabulous fir helping to make this episode. I love your content.
Did u watch Thor Love and Thunder? If so how did u like the god portrayal?
I have a request. Can you do “Arachne”. Or, is there to little knowledge about her?
@jonsolo Congratulations on your wedding
why did you Omit the Valkyrie from The Northman that is an accurate of a Valkyrie come on man The Northman is one of 2022s best films also 2022 has gone Viking Space, Real or Viedo game
Lady Freyja is not only the leader of the Valkyrie host as they descend into the battle field, but in addition to the attributes you mentioned for Freyja, she's also the goddess of beauty, magic, and passion. Not just death, love and fertility.
That's exactly what I was about to comment. She is awesome
@Cat Huff I totally agree, she's my matron Goddess
@@danielmurdock9159 oh awesome! Tell me all the things! I am still new so I haven't done diety work.
I would love to see a Messed Up Origins of Davy Jones or The Flying Dutchman. Pirate Folklore is so interesting. Loved the episode by the way, Great job Jon!
Aye Aye
Now THAT I would love to see!
Totally! Along with some obligatory SpongeBob/PotC pictures.
Hey Jon , I have a request, I’ve been reading a lot of vampire lore lately doing a research for a story that I’m writing, and I was surprised about how much I have found that I didn’t know, I think you’d be interested on some of the stories I found , how about you do a video about varnie the vampire?
Ya actually, you should do an episode on vampires!!!
@@asmaabushneba2263 I actually found lots of interesting folklores & legends regarding vampires, other than Dracula that is
I think wendigo would be cool as well
Oof, hate me if you want, but I'm an Anne Rice fan. Armand got a worse than bad shake in the movies.
But the backstory origins going back to Egypt, and the involvement of the redheaded twins from a (cannibalistic) tribe is impressive.
@@gaiasguardian205 well when I said vampire lore I meant more like vampires legends and classical literature, I didn’t mean modern literature like the vampire chronicles or twilight ( good God , no ) but it might be interesting to use it as comparison, in my story the vampire I write about is bored out of his mind because he finds no joy or pleasure in the world anymore, such is the curse of a prolonged life , that aspect was mentioned in the vampire chronicles, but unlike it , my vampire is more of a thinker , a philosopher, and he is more social with human kind , also a participant in some major historical events around the world, I am hoping to release the series as a graphic novel because some of the descriptions I made are heavily visual and I want the readers to get the best experience of the story
But there was another Brunhilde. In the Niebelungenlied, Brunhilde is a warrior queen who will not marry until she finds a man who can best her in a contest of battle skills. Siegfried does so with the aid of a cloak which makes him invisible and multiplies his strength.
Isn’t that just the “Germanic” version of the same characters/story? I believe Sigurd and Siegfried are essentially the same character by different cultural names.
Just like Atalanta
It’s the same one. Just a slightly different variation of the story. Sigurd and Sigfried are the same person, but the diferent variations of the name in diffferent reagions.
Y'know what I just realized makes this series work, it's how nonchalant he is when talking about the messed up stuff. He says it like he's not phased in the slightest, making it both somewhat funny in messed up kinda way and enticing.
Yep, Jon is monotone lol.
Hey, Jon. Congratulations on your wedding. For December, would you do a messed up origins of the nutcracker? Parts of the original Hoffmann story are pretty dark and it’s so popular, Disney got in on it
Ooooo... Or the dark history of marriage itself!!
Always fascinating how mythical beings evolve over time. What most people imagine angels to look like are more like valkyries
And its interesting how "angelicness" is assosiated with femininity even tho most if not all named angels are male
Very true, true biblical depictions are terrifying so I prefer the Valcaries lol
I like the skit with the hands. X) That thoroughly amused me. The Valkyries are awesome and reminds me of both selkies (the shedding of skins, being forced to marry men who find the skins, then run off once they find the skins) and the Morrigan, the three war goddesses of Celtic mythology (Badb, Macha, and Nemain). Great video!
Love, Love LOVE Norse mythology. Can't get enough! Keep it coming along with any African folktales you find. p.s. Congratualtions on your marriage!
Did you just say the messed up origins of Percy Jackson?😐
Jon, you have no idea how hard I’m trying not to cry tears of joy right now🤧😭
I’ve always wondered if it was possible for you to make a video about it so thanks for taking your time to shed some light on my favorite book series
Loved this episode and can't wait for the next. I got my youngest son interested in mythology by reading the Percy Jackson books out loud to him when he was too young to read them himself. As he got older, he read ALL of the Rick Riordan books and got into mythology even more. Now this is one of the few channels I can use as a talking point sometimes with a now occasionally crabby 17 year old. Thank you!!
Hey jon. Could you please do west indian folklore? Would be greatly appreciated. Also congrats on jumping the broom, sir.
Heilung has a beautiful song, “Svanrand,” which is a chant of the Valkyries’ names.
Hey Jon, if the Valykries sometimes fly on boars, do you think that's where the expression came from when they say "when pigs fly?"
Wait the Latina actress was supposed to be portraying a Norse Valkyrie? Never would have guessed.
No she was supposed to be portraying an Asgardian Valkyrie in a Marvel movie.
And She's Afro-Latina.
@@SjofnBM1989 ty
@@SjofnBM1989 If it was reverse, how quick would the calls of cultural appropriation be? lol. Especially with that distinction.
@@SangoProductions213 I'm latina, and I'm thinking that as well. People can't have it both ways: complain about cultural appropriation, and on the same breath ask for representation in certain stories.
Ooooo YES my favourite legend telling legends 👏 congrats on the wedding such a beautiful couple 🥰
Wow, the animations and art are really great on this episode.
valkyrie profile lenneth pretty much one of the few rpg games that portrayed valkyrie as faithful as possible, i think jon will love it
I haven't watched your content in ages but I'm glad to be back 🙂
Thank you! I was totally asking myself this question this morning ☕️
A PODCAST OF MESSED UP ORIGINS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED!!!
Psychopomp- my favorite word and character trait!!
Thursday is Jon Solo Day! I look forward to your content after work every week! Thank you for the content you put out. It's both very informative and put in a way that brings flavor to the stories beyond what they bring to the table themselves!!
Am I the only one who had no idea that Valkarie in the Thor movies is Brunhilde? Even IMDb calls her Valkarie…
Sigurd is actually mentioned in Hellblade Senua’s Sacrifice. There are actually several mentions of Norse Mythology in Hellblade.
That’s because the Viking came and ráped and pillaged Ireland for years. They killed Irish gods and perverted myths with their own and then the Christians did it again. Now they are attacking the Irish with foreign color people.
Not sure why but I laughed when Sigurd leaves after Brundhild introduces herself as soon as she wakes up from Sigurd cutting off her armor. "I'm a Valkyrie" "Sweet, bye now"
Great video Jon! Love your channel! Great place to get my mythology on! Keep em coming bud!
Hi @Jon Solo thank you for making a video about this. I am a music educator and I do remember in music history Richard Wagner composed Die Valkyrie (Flight of the Valkyries) from the Ring Cycle. The whole ring cycle is a Norse story.
This man gets finer every time I randomly check in his videos jeez
Hey Jon, congrats on your wedding and another thing, I'm not getting notifications or getting recommended your video about the cyclopes and some other recent videos.
Very interesting that Valcaries look like what most people think of angels, even though biblical angels are nothing short of terrifying
Well u know allt of shit was stolen from the vikings
If you haven’t already I recommend you buy the God of War Lore and Legends book it might be fun comparing and contrasting more God of War Norse Mythology with actual Norse Mythology.
5:51 that picture depicts the valkyries being observed bathing by wayland (an elf) and his brothers
good eye!
"They can also ride upon wolves and boars.... The two animals I would least want flying toward me." 🤣 So deadpan it's brilliant.
Our German Shepherds name is Valkyrie. I wanted to name the 2nd one Reginleif, but I was shot down. I got to name her Rain instead.
Thanks for the work dude
Can you do a video on Kratos and his origins?
I don't think he will because Kratos was created for the God of War series and wasn't part of the original Greek myths.
there was a person with similar name but he was zeus worker he chained up prometheus (cratus was his name or sth like that he was the personafication of strength)
@@GrimmShadowsII he's based on the titan Cratus
really, we went a WHOLE episode without mentioning bugs bunny??
Especially since "What's Opera, Doc" is a classic take on Brunhilde.
Hey Jon, would you mind making an episode on werewolves, as if you weren't planning one already.
Great video! I really enjoyed watching this!
The business with the armor/feathers being stolen makes me think of selkies!
Read the Nibelungenlied from Germany. It is a different version of the Brunhild story and if you like messed up, this goes way further in the messed up department.
the valkyries armor being stolen reminds me of selkies, except for the thing the guy has to do to win her back or whatever
You have done an awesome job...as usual!
That sketch, "I lost my hands" was so good. 👍
There is a similar story in Sardinia about fairies Janas who have to marry the man who can steal a piece of their clothes or sew it to theirs. They fly too and are linked to communication with the dead 😊
i loved it!!! i canta wait for the next video!
Congratulations on the wedding man, I appreciate all your hard work
The valkyries of the Battle of Clontarff really need their own Disney movie, imho.
Yessss!! My favorite mythology UA-camr and my favorite mythology books??? I'm here for it!!
Yes... Love this channel
the brunhild story lacks a bit of context, at least from the one I read.
The one I read, Sidgur after finding Brunhild the first time did promise her he'd marry her after finishing his next quest. However in that, the queen tried to get him to marry her daughter. And he refused leading her to trick him into drinking a potion that made him forget Brunhild and his promise to her. She tried to get her sons to marry brunhild but it was only once Sidgur helped them they managed to retrieve her.
In that story Brunhild didn't kill sidgur or have him killed until she learned he had been enchanted to forget her. Not to mention she had been *promised* someone like Sidgur by Odin. So in essence the queen had gone against the will of the gods.
Love the funny commentary!!
5:02 "unforgiving summer heat" yeah, somehow I don't imagine that was much of a problem for the vikings... hahaha
This was wonderful as always! I especially loved the part where your hands were chopped off😆😂😂😂🤘
So early! Love you Jon!
PS I have been watching you for literally years and I look forward to every new episode...its the high point of my week. Keep up the good work
I love how you’re opening your videos with “mere mortals”
Not sure what series it would be under but I think some Celtic folklore would be awesome. Either fairies and fairy rings or druids and such. Would be nice to see some Irish/Scottish representation.
He's done some
@@heatherturner2366 really? I've looked and they are mostly Norse or Greek mythology.
"I lost both my hands for this s**t!"
I don't know why I found that line funny, but it did make me laugh.
Also, wasn't there an opera about Brunhild and Siggard that was spoofed in a Looney Tunes cartoon?
Thanks for making all these cool videos! Just discovered your channel a few weeks ago and they've all been awesome! Have you ever thought about doing an origins story about any Hayao miyazaki films or studio ghibli? They're also owned by Disney. Yes, I know anime isn't for everyone but for me and many others studio ghibli films are very unique with beautiful animation. I think It would be interesting to see if these movies are based off any other stories.
Well this was pretty fantastic
I love your channel.
Valkyrie profile is a great video game. 😇
An underrated gem of a jrpg.
Always a good day when Jon uploads 😁😁
You are cool 😎
My school mascot was a Valkyrie. Glad to know we’re so badass and terrifying.
Hhahaha literally my favorite solo film all for the little skit mid way hahah
P.s. solo shirts with "I lost my hands for this ish" pleaseeeee XD
My guyyyyyyy. Long time no watch
Cool story bro! :)
Okayyy but i love your little skit!!!!!
Hi Jon, I have request for a while can you do a episode on the Norse goddess of beauty, freya. She has always been one of my favorite Norse god
very interesting
Although I love the Norse and Greek mythology videos it would be really cool to see an Egyptian mythology series soon
Percy you blessed my soul
Congrats on the nuptials!! There is a great theory about a possible connection between the Valkyries and the Angel of death figure that comes up in the Risala text that talks about the said angel of death choosing the sacrifice to accompany the dead viking leader. in Islamic Angelogy there is an Angel of death who acts very like a valkyrie choosing where the dead go in the afterlife experts wonder whether the writer who practiced Islam was seeing a mortal women acting as a valkyrie and this was translated into the Angel of death????
Have you considered doing Finnish or Sámi mythology?
Congratualtions on your marriage! I didn't know Valkyries are mortal. I wonder how can I aply for the job? Now seriously, the motive of stealing something from a not-so-human woman to force her in marrige is wide spread, but this is the first time I come across the part where the man can win his wife back, by overcoming some obstacles. Guess I have a lot more to read, cuz this is all truly fascinating.
You do not apply, you are chose by Odin and frig. It's a great honor to be chosen as valkyrie as you will fight when Ragnarok comes.
They are mortal first, spirits later
I think he was saying that they Valkyries were once mortal women who then ascended into their divine roles.
Urban fantasy:what if a young woman juggles a normal life with Valkyrie duty like a superhero?
sweet podcast
Cool Video ❤️❤️❤️❤️
If you can edit video titles 👀 might I suggest “Selectors of the Slain” for that sweet sweet alliteration?
Wonderful video as always! And congratulations to the both of you!
Wow I'm super early. I love this show.
@Jon Solo You should watch the anime (Record of Ragnarok) and see the Valkyries sisters do in the story 👍
Are you going to do more about sigurd and brynhildr or the volsunga saga in general
Woo hoo! Got here early 😎
sameeee
Hey dave can you do a video on Aurgelmir??
Hey Jon! Can you do a messed up origin of Ragnar lothbrook? Thanks!
Ah the absolute best freaking stories on the planet. The sagas are just as wonderful and should be REQUIRED READING IN HIGH SCHOOL.....
Would you ever cover anything related to abrahamic religion? Like Djinns, the leviathan or even biblically accurate angels, seeing everything you've covered on mythology fascinated me so much do my own research onto similar things and has really made me develop an interest in the belief systems of different cultures so I'm curious to see what you'd have to say on what appears in the Christian/Islamic/Judaist elements of their religion
Have you researched SKADI of Norse Mythology? She's my favorite.... A Giant and a Goddess of The Wild, archery, skiing, forests and had a wicked sense of humor. She is depicted with blue skin and white hair sometimes and runs with a couple huge white wolves. Check out the comical story of her being able to "hang with the men"....
They have a noble job. They select warriors for Odin and take them to Valhalla. Their horses don’t have to be winged. Also, as far as I know, Valkyrie didn’t have wings themselves.
I learned something!
Jon, been watching you videos since forever. No idea where to leave this idea but just listen: The archetype fairy story usually begins "Once upon a time". That is sort of an usual way of saying "One time" It must be a left over from some other language where stories began that way. Could you make an investigation into this idea? Keep up the good work and mazal tov.
8:40 well, maybe they only choose your hands to be in Valhalla
Was curious about this, nice video. First I heard of a Valkyrie was AOM in 2002 and the in ATEOT by BG in 2010. Pity the 2 movies she appeared in were horrifyingly bad.
Congratulations on the wedding
I have 1 question about Ragnarök though, why not send everybody to Valhalla, then Loki and the Jötnar have a way smaller army while the Aesir have a way larger one
Jon love your back stories! just watched puss in boots, even though it's from 3 years ago. was hoping you might do "the white snake" from bro's grimm. another of helpful animals type
Looking forward to god of war ragnarok when it’s released November 9th this year. Always enjoy your videos can’t wait for your podcasts to.
