I always feel so bad for Fenrir. He was raised with the Aesir and grew to view them like family, but because Odin had a vision of dying by being devoured by Fenrir, he tricked him into being tied up with the help of his best friend and left there for eons. It’s this betrayal that causes him to swear he’ll be the one to kill Odin at Ragnorok, so Odin basically seals his own fate
You shouldn't feel bad, it's all made up nonsense concocted in a time of ignorance by imbeciles.
Came here to say exactly this, although it was only Tyr who raised and fed him. The other gods feared him as he grew so much every day, I don’t think it was ‘fortunate’ that Oden was avenged.
-
Oden forced Fenrir to harm the one god (Tyr) who had shown him care, whilst binding him painfully for eternity.
Oden was a god of madness who time and again sealed his own fate, from imprisoning and torturing Loki, to the torturous imprisonment of Loki’s son.
In short, poor Fenrir. The goodest of boys.
That or Kratos and the others best him down.
@@adzyanimates174 Odin did not force Fenrir to bite Tyr. Fenrir was not a common wolf, he was intelligent and had conversations with the other aesir. It was Fenrir who forced the Aesir to have one of their own put their hand in his mouth, otherwise he would not let them bind him.
@@Forty7-Twenty7 yes he did, because Fenrir was an intelligent and unlike Oden he wasn’t an oath breaker. He made a promise that should Oden be deceiving him, he would bite the hand of off the god who puts their hand in his mouth. Oden lied to Tyr and Fenrir.

here is some original text translated from Danish to English
Sunday is the day of the sun - Sunday
Sol is a goddess in Norse mythology. Over time, Sun Day has become Sunday.
In the runic alphabet, the rune S means sun.
Monday is the day of the moon - Monday
The name Monday comes from 'moon'. In Latin, the moon is called 'luna', and the Latin can still be recognized in French, where Monday is called 'Lundí'.
In the north, the moon was called 'Mani', and it eventually became Monday.
In Norse mythology, a distinction is made between two different meanings of the moon.
One is the cosmic phenomenon and the other is a truly mythical person. Monday was the day of the moon, and is named after the mythical person Moon.
Tuesday is Tuesday - Tuesday
Mars is a god of war, and so is the Nordic god 'Tyr' or 'Tír', and it is he who has given his name to Tuesday.
In Norse mythology, Tyr is one of the Aesir.
Tyr is primarily known as the god of justice and war, but is also described as wise and brave.
The T-rune was associated with Tyr.
Wednesday is Odin's day - Odin's day
Mercury is being compared to Odin, so it became Wednesday.
Odin is in Norse mythology Frigg's husband and he is one of the most prominent gods in traditional Norse mythology.
He is particularly associated with war luck, royal power, rune power and wisdom.
Thursday is Thursday - Thursday
Jupiter is similar to Thor because they both deal with lightning and thunder. So the day turned into Thursday.
Thor is in Nordic mythology Sif's husband and was the god of thunder.
The name Þórr (thor) is related to the words thunder and thunder, as well as English 'thunder' and German 'donner'.
He controlled the weather, and fought the enemies of civilization, who at that time were, among other things, giants and trolls.
He is associated with strength, aggression and reliability.
Friday is Frigg's day - Friday
Venus is a god of love, and it's Frigg - or maybe Freya, as you think the two goddesses were originally the same - so it became Friday.
Frigg is Odin's wife in Norse mythology.
She was perceived as the goddess of marriage.
She was also a protector and helper in traditional women's work, such as weaving, sewing and cooking.
Saturday is bathing day - Saturday
Saturday is not named after any Nordic gods. The word Saturday comes from the Norse word Saturday and was also known as Sunnunótt.
First part of the word, "guild" means "bath" or "bath water". So Saturday is bathing day, or washing day, where one has washed and bathed.
In Latin, Saturday was named after Saturn (Ssturni), and we can recognize it in the English language; Saturday.
sunnunótt means the evening of sunday and can be recognized in it - in some parts of germany - ogfte used words for saturday: Sonnabend.

In the comics, hel is actually Loki's daughter, makes sense why they changed it to sister since the actor for hella is older than Tom Hiddleston
Yeah, but damned if she didn't make it look good.
But looking older means nothing when talking about gods. In Norse mythology Hel's left half is rotten and decayed. Hela could easily be Loki's daughter and her older appearance could be a reference to her being a goddess of death.

I actually didn't forget that a lot of people don't know about Norse myth. It's just
A) They can use CGI overlays to make Cate Blanchett look younger like the cast of "The Irishman".
B) It wouldn't take long to explain how or why Loki's daughter looked older than he does.
I get it, it would change the story and narrative, I'm just addressing your argument of Hela being changed into Thor's older sister just because the actress is older than Tom.

@@cocolime6496 I prefer Odin's way because it's just bad ass. Jesus was killed by the people he was saving. It's got an epic poetic theme to it.
But Odin was just like, I'll do whatever it takes to reach my goal. Period.
Plus the only thing that could kill him was Fenrir basically a supernatural wolf.
The entire thing just reads as epic. Also the christian god is distant far removed from humanity. Odin can actually learn things and make mistakes.

@@omarsabry9489 the Trinity is incoherent nonsense. One person can't also be three persons at the same time. And then add on it that he died, then he was angry that he died, and then after being dead he somehow resurrected himself?
Only way this can work is if God is simply a supernatural non corporeal split personality. Then one of the three personalities could become physical and die, and the other two could be hurt and resurrect him.
But to say that they are actually all the same person is simply incoherent.

Odin would win because he's assostated with poems and rap is basically a form of poetry.

Beau Chance nah
Aww was hoping for the now to be from American gods, Mr. Wednesday.
Mr Wednesday is based on the myth Odin. Basically if he went to America
4:27 I just want to point out that the reason we know so little about a lot of the things that "happened to the gods" is because the young and old Edda does in difference to the Bible not contain the full story of the religion (as it practically was at that time). The poetic Edda (the elder Edda) only contains stories about the gods and what they did. But most likely those are only a very small portion of the stories that was being told back in the viking age.
So there is/was probably a reason why Odin became the ruler. And there is/was probably a full story about the time Odin sacrificed his eye for wisdom.
We have to remember even the Poetic Edda was written about 200 years after the viking age

@@filthycasual8187 According to the websites it’s supposed to be the real man but like I said I think it’s more likely he just happen to have kids with the same names and the wife with the same name and himself with the same name
Great video man.. When I was researching about the All-Father, I discovered that Odin was one of the few Norse God's that demanded human sacrifice every now and then to secure victory in battle. He was also known as a liar, murderer, deceiver and oath breaker. All cruel and cold hearted acts were committed in the pursuit of knowledge, understanding and wisdom. Funny thing too is, an oath made to Odin could never be broken, it was one of, if not the biggest taboo in the Norse peoples relationship with the gods.. Yet Odin himself was known to brake an oath or two, when it meant he would obtain more knowledge. Lastly, he was known in his earliest times among the Germanic peoples as a God of War and storms. And I find that interesting that as he rose in status, his son Thor took on that mantle. Great video man, I know to cover everything on him, would take like a 1-3hr video. He's so complex as you stated and is obviously my favorite of the Norse Pantheon.. Also, I think Odin would be proud of your beard.

A lot of modern pagans do not believe in Ragnorok since it might have Christian origin.
Fun history fact tidbit, mixed in with norse mythology!
The start of Ragnarök will be the coming of fimbulwinter,(allso known as Vargrvretr or fimbulvetr)
This is a cold winter that will kill most people, and is said to be three winters following eachother, without spring, summer or autumn. Where winds blow hard, and cold from all directions, and is insufferably cold!
Now for the history bit!
Fimbulwinter is based on real events!
The mythology might be related to the extreme weather effects that happened around 535-536 which resulted in a notable drop in temperature across northern Europe. There have also been several popular ideas about whether the particular piece of mythology has a connection to the climate change that occurred in the Nordic countries at the end of the nordic Bronze age from about 650 BC.
Yay history!

I mean't early 2020
Great video thanks for sharing and love Gunther!
Jon liking my comment would literally make my year ❤️❤️
alas, your year hasn't been made
Hela is Loki's daughter, not Odins.
He said that in the vid.
I follow Odin.
Yes you are right but at the same time loki isn't a Norse god he was a character originally written in the pros edda which was written by a Christian ther is no story's of loki or his children before that point. meaning all the story of loki that we know of wher actually made by Christians not the Norse pegan people.

Curious how the Norse Odin & Egyptian Horus both had eyes plucked out. 🧐
Oden didn't have his eye plucked out he sacrifice it to gaine the knowledge of the runes.
Wasn't it Ra not Horus. Also what about Osiris?
@@jinolin9062 Eye of Ra is something else. Look it up. Says something about the feminine aspect of the Sun God Ra. Eye of Horus is the one you see in Egyptian art. Set gouged out Horus’ left eye. Osiris was the father of Horus. Osiris was killed by Set, first by trapping him in a coffin & dumping him in the Nile, & then later Set cuts up his body into 14 pieces. All were gathered by Isis except his phallus, which was eaten by a fish. Isis conceived Horus after she fashioned Osiris’ Frankenstein corpse with a new golden phallus. And in a weird twist, Horus later kills his mother Isis when she interfered with his fight with Set.
Egyptian, Norse, and Greek all have the river Styx as well. They share many similarities.

Good vid, I did not learn anything new, but I am a fan of Norse myths.
Jon great beard, great content, man you can do it all. Keep the great video's coming.
Fun fact the day Thursday gets its name from Thor's Day, yes Thor has an entire day of the week dedicated to him (as if he couldn't have enough of a massive ego), and Friday gets its name from Frigga's/Frigg's Day, yes Frigga/Frigg also has an entire day of the week dedicated to her (but she is the queen of the Aesir, so it kind of makes sense).
Also, one of Odin's Aliases, when he walked amongst mortals on Midgard, was "The Gray Wanderer" and the description of this persona sounds eerily similar to how the figure of Gandalf the Gray, who ironically also has the same moniker, from JRR Tolkien's works is described.
Maybe at some point, Jon could do videos on the origins of the names of day and months, it might be an interesting experience, although he'll probably need to call in Tristan from Name Explain for collab on those things because diving into and explaining the name of things is very much up his alley, his channel's name even tells you that.
always look forward to your humorous knowledge punch to the ears each week... hell each day
FYI, there are still Heathen's who worship the Norse Gods, They choose a deity, Some are Asatru or Theodish, etc. My significant other is Theodish, His chosen deity is Thor, as his significant other I have chosen Odin.
I love your channel. I'm a fan for 6 days and I already love it.
