- Heya! I've been taking a long time to upload, so i figured i would do another one of these since i saw that Jarlyk's new tas had been released!
This one is of the Spelless True Ending category, in which the Dream No More ending is achieved without picking up any spells whatsoever.
I'll hopefully be uploading soon again, since i have some bigger projects that i've been working on. Expect some more higher effort videos to come soon-ish!
PLEASE GO CHECK OUT JARLYK'S OTHER VIDEOS!

Kind of love that even speedrunners and TAS-ers make mistakes. The extra cycle False Knight made me smile bc that is something I would do.
Why would a TAS have mistakes? Can't they redo sections?
@@zaidlacksalastname4905 It's possible to go back and redo things, but it's non-trivial, especially for changes early in the run. Any change early in the game will have ripple effects that break things in subtle ways later and so I'd have to go back through the entire rest of the game and fix it up. That and I actually didn't notice this mistake until the video was already released and someone pointed it out. :D
@@jarlyk Honestly I hadn't noticed the extra cycle myself until chat pointed it out and I had to go back not once not twice but THREE times to confirm "oh yeah there was an extra huh" because things were moving so fast I didn't even process it.
@@jarlyk can’t you manipulate RNG back to the original state so the later parts get fixed as well?
@@Firefly256 Unfortunately, no, for two main reasons. One is that HK in particular doesn't have wholly deterministic ordering of its random calls; the exact order of random calls varies per frame in a pseudo-random way due to multi-threading. The other is that the 'RNG state' is effectively a 128-bit number, which means there are ~3.40E38 possible states.
Jarlyk: "You can avoid getting hit by Markoth's shield if you just hug them and stay inside the shield."
Me: "Oh, okay. No problem." *dies*
Did people have problems with Markoth? I think I got him in 3rd try on my 1st playthrough.
Then again, I had Pure Nail by then. I was a wuss because I was on my 1st playthrough so I always tried to get the max possible upgrades (Nail+Masks+Soul thingy) before any minor/major boss.
@@anthronox4992 to be fair having 3 tries on him does still mean you had problems
I did the base form on my first try.
@@anthronox4992 getting nail upgrades makes a few fights harder since some bosses including all dream bosses scale their health with nail damage and spells can be used instead of nail
My trouble with him is his P5 form
Believe it or not: This was not a TAS, Jarlyk was just on bath salts
i love that the tas is so perfect doing the frame-perfect nail turn arounds, and then does another fk cycle
The nail turn arounds are so perfect that anyone who beaten hollow knight will respect them the nail turn arounds are just absurd
Hey it’s not the poor baby tas’ fault. They were just taught wrong by their creator.
watching TASes of hollow knight has such an interesting feeling because like it kinda makes a lot of sense for the knight to be moving so optimally. like TAS is a perfect representation of what vessels are with in-game lore
That’s… terrifying to think about LOL
I love watching TAS runs, because everything is "technically" possible for a human to do. (Not feasible in the slightest, and no normal person would ever be able to do it, but technically possible.)
watching them always makes me want to start practicing just one or two parts, to get the level of a TAS in that ONE segment, even if I would never be able to match a TAS completely.
(Then I attempt it, and remember that I kinda suck, and can barely match a normal speedrunner on their off-day when they had something in their eye and were holding back a sneeze, let alone a TAS... But it's fun anyway!)
It isn’t technically possible. Humans are physically unable to mash as much as tases do
@@josephpoulsen5447 not if you have multiple people pressing in synchrony.... never going to happen but theoretically....
You'll often see impossible shit like pressing left and right at the same time on a controller, which is only possible if you modify the controller.
@@user-mv2nn6rw2w or use a button based dpad like you find on joycons, or used both dpad and lstick at the same time? dont get me wrong, there are tons of humanly impossible things in a TAS but that aint one of them lmao
@@mikusama8030 Rules of different speedrun categories differ, some include having to use the intended controller (note the singular form) without mods.
O/W you might as well say everything TAS do is possible to be done by human if only (insert impractical conditions) happen.
correct me if im wrong, but im pretty sure getting nail upgrades still outscales dream warrior HP. like, nail upgrades still reduce the total amount of nail hits it takes to defeat dream warriors. the whole "avoiding nail upgrades" thing is because spells outdamage the nail so much already, and for this reason the main source of damage in speedruns is usually spells. so in a no spell run, nail upgrades would only be beneficial
You are correct! I was having a bit of a smallbrain moment while watching this, that’s all!
Spells out damage nails until pure nail
In Godhome nail is supreme, as far as spells are concerned you will usually have shaman stone at most, alongside nail mods. Spells take much less investment to get good dps.
@@protoss5758 which still baffles me to this day as I expect the opposite.
@@protoss5758 that's technically true, but unless you're using fury its still worth it to use spells and spell charms in godhome (unless you're super super good)
It always breaks my heart to see Elderbug call after the Knight and be utterly ignored
That Markoth fight was truly beatiful as someone who struggled to beat p5 but after much pain I finally completed p5 for the first time a few days ago
GG man, the only time I beat Markoth I died at GPZ
Congrats!
I love how in the chat he said right before Markoth “tip for :markoth don’t blink” that makes me laugh
The baldur with nail only was incredible. my first nail only baldur took me 5 hours
29:01 They probably don't round at the end because the numbers they're working on are stored as integer numbers, and converting back and forth to floating point (fractional) numbers would be more of a bother. It's just how programming works.
But if you’re multiplying 13 by 1.5, the output is going to be a float anyway, unless for some reason they store the multiplier in some kind of rational number class, rather than a float.
@@Deathranger999 I'm thinking "damage += damage/2", where "/" is the integer division.
@@DutchBlackMantha Yeah, that could be how it’s implemented. But then would they do the same thing with the 1.75 multiplier? Then it would be damage += (damage * 3) / 4, which feels a little weird. Also, both of these operations implicitly round down instead of up, which makes it even stranger.
casting to int rounds towards 0 tho
@@Deathranger999 adding fury on top of strength multiplies the damage by 2.25 (in total), so in other words it's cumulative. Thus the damage per hit ist at 30.
Outside of times where I thought it was required, I never really used the spells to begin with. Until I got to like, 4th playthrough and I wanted to change things up.
Mastery of the Nail is pretty fun as is.
I feel that. I still don't use spells on some bosses just because it's more fun to me
The markoth fight made me sweat even tho… y’know…
48:32 i laughed so hard at this i dont know why
Thank you
*boing, faded in then out*
vroom
If anyone wants to try and kill the elder baldur, as someone who has done it, I would recommend you to also get dream shield, and don't try to get the timing, just spam it a lot (go away a litlle bit for the baldur to open and immediately go back and swing) that's what worked the best for me
If a spelless TAS of TE with an extra false knight cycle has a time of 1:00:31, it would be interesting to see what the time of a TAS of TE with no mistakes would look like.
Add in the stuff that wasn't done, like Wallcling abuse and all the madness and time saves that it offers... at most a sub 45.
..... why all the fuckin acronyms dude just say the God damn words its getting on my nerves how everrrrything is just letters nowadays its like trying to read gibberish
@@hughmungus431ikr?
@@hughmungus431there’s 2 acronyms my dude, and TAS is more widely used and recognized than “tool assisted speedrun”.
@@hughmungus431Why did you say fuckin just say the full swear
Yes, dream warriors scale their health on nail upgrades, however they (and other bosses who scale to your nail) scale slower than your nail damage does, so upgrading your nail still lets you kill them in slightly fewer hits if you're going nail only.
The nail upgrades are only detrimental to your fight against these bosses if you're hitting them with spells, which this TAS isn't.
this run is so crazy, love the constant nail turn arounds and how creative it gets!
This narration is basically: okay so normally this is where I'd wink but we can't do it because I've been beheaded
The extra FK cycle only lost about 8 seconds. If he made micro (and I mean MICRO) optimizations, it probably could be sub-1, but the extra cycle is not the deciding factor.
got to see one of my favorite hollow knight ccs react to this run, and now i get to see my favorite hk streamer react to it too, so thats fun :)
I love this because I barely used any spells in my first play through. I didn’t realize their potential, so I just spec’d for nail physicals through the entire game.
The tas while in white palace really took "Blink and you'll miss it" to a whole 'nother level
These arent tas's, its just jarlyk is shy about his skill in hollow knight.
do a stream where you speedrun... whatever really, but commentate it in the 3rd person like in this video (bonus points if you dont tell the audience youre playing beforehand and make it feel like a reaction stream)
27:47 the chat message fades out perfectly in sync with the screen transition lol
Edit: again at 39:30 lmao
I have 2 things to say:
1 if speed runs and TASes of Hollow Knight can be this fun to watch, I can only imagine a fraction of how fun Silksong speed runs and TASes will be.
2 I discovered a small glitch with wings on my switch. The first time I use them after waking up from a bench after leaving the game, it always goes higher than normal.
I lost my 106% steel soul run while getting distracted from this video
Oh rip man
ouch
O O F
28:18 I have an answer to that. In computers, floating point numbers are stored in their scientific format/mantissa form, i.e. like: 0.15423*10^5. So everytime you wanna do a floating point operation, there is some amount of pre-computation required. To not make this happen, you don't use floating point numbers. You save it as an integer number and the computer automatically rounds down.
Would you ever use TAS RNG manipulation to do low TE and get an essence every bird?
The thing is that the RNG manipulation is within the boundaries of what you can feasibly attain. The RNG value is a 128-bit integer, so there are 3.4e+38 possible RNG values in the game. Therefore the chances of there even being a value that allows this to happen are effectively nonexistent.
Addendum: the raw base chance of getting the essence drops required (if you ignore the RNG value issue) would be 1 in 4.45e+3681.
@@sanikuanonym1105 I'm very late on this, but I'd be willing to bet that particles associated with player movement call RNG a number of times when they spawn. Because of this, getting essence every bird is simply a matter of finding a good RNG value for every individual bird. This isn't like that one room in the TTYD any% TAS that calls RNG multiple times on load with some very particular results being needed without any manipulation between those calls.
bro I suffered so hard on watchers SO HARD the first time I played. seeing him DESTROY those bastards made me so happy, I could die happy from that holy shit.
I love this series!
When Jarlyk finds out you can do a no-dash/no-fireball/no-claw shade skip for blue lake somehow, the spiciest of skips!!
That markoth fight... I have nothing to say, thanks
babe wake up, new bluesr video is out
That they round the damage calculation in every single step is likely because they might just do integer multiplication, in which case the programming language does it automatically because it is not able to store a decimal value inbetween steps. That would be the case in the way I would naively program how the buffs work.
This is old but that would truncate not round unless rounding was specifically done
Great commentary!
While he was in White Palace, I was thinking, "It would be so hilarious if he did Path of Pain just to show off"
at one point i checked and i think most bosses (or at least the ones i struggled on my first run) that have scaling hp scale slower than your nail does. for example: nail 0 markoth has 250 hp, or 50 hits; then nail 1 is 400 hp, or 45 hits; then nail 2 is 520 hp, or 40 hits; nail 3 624 or 37 hits, and nail 4 705 or 34 hits. if you rely only on nail damage and not spells or any other damage source, then nail upgrades are always worth it.
imagine a low% godhome ending TAS that gets essence from every enemy
the final blow was delivered to radiance about a second before it hit 1h
Cant wait for silksong tas
*The guy she tells you not to worry about*
I think this is the true way of playing Hollow Knight. Without interfereance of thoughts of desires, just pure machine made moves and attacks.
llemm has a dream gate placed, that's how he's always faster
Full up fury also happened with godhome heals when you finish a boss
The epic theme during the Radiance fight, is actually this Knights
Fun fact: (At least) In current patch, the amount of health Dream Warriors have for each nail upgrade doesn't make it so nail upgrades are bad for fighting them. In fact, for the two bosses I checked this with (Xero and Galien), the total hits needed to defeat the boss goes down with each upgrade.
As I mentioned earlier, however, I only checked this with two of the Dream Warriors. I can't say for certain if this applies to every one of them.
imagine a Pasifist TAS run
2:34 I’m calling it right now the way he’s gonna get to green path is long nail and fury
Watching the task do the white palace gave me a panic attack. But I do love your videos
i was doing a pacifist challenge and i got to the frog room on 1 hp, i healed bit by bit with dream wielder
I love watching TAS abyss ascents because the vessel is always just standing there at the top like “Too slow, lil bro.” as if it didn’t just watch the TAS phase shift up there in a matter of seconds.
That was insane. Good job, very enjoyable.
TASTE no spells run should definitely be the official name
Taste no spells? But they smell good!
another visual glitch where you appear to have less masks: if you heal with deep focus, then immediately take 1 damage, it appears as if you took 2 damage
I have a guess for why the rounding on the nail damage works the way it does. Most modifiers to nail damage are permanent (upgrades) or semi-permanent (Strength charms, only change at the bench). So these changes are calculated and applied when they initially occur. However, as Fury is a temporary buff, it's calculated at a different time. It saves the system having to check a value if they don't recalculate the whole thing when Fury activates and deactivates.
everything is erfectly planned
Me: knows that TAS stands for tool assisted speedrun
Also me: Terms and Service
Next we want isma’s tear TAS
Cmon get into it, TASers
GGs Jarlyk
all that stood between jarlyk and a sub 1 no spell te tas was an extra false knight cycle
Tbh just because focus uses soul that doesn't mean it's a spell, you just use the soul to mend your shell, so it literally doesn't use any kind of casting, you just focus.
19:46 Chat is having a nice talk :D
Well actually nail upgrades are useful even more here, the upgrades make damage scale more than bosses' health, and some bosses (like radiance) have a fixed health that doesn't change with nail upgrades.
Nail arts are also op with fury
Man seeing this TE no spell speedrun i just realized white palace is gonna be pain for me
As long as you're not speedrunning White Palace, Hiveblood is a godsend. The platforming is still tough, but there's little risk you'll get thrown back your the last bench.
I WAS THERE
bro this TAS guy is really talented huh
hey blue just wondering what mic you're using, your voice sounds so clear :o
This is basically lore accurate if he has no feelings
i can do frame perfect turn arounds on a rare occasion, but its very rare, but its nice when i do one. 200 hours on hk btw
You think maybe the bugs wear masks in order to assume an identity of civiisation and the reason that goes away when they leave is because they can no longer support that identity in the wild?
Oh my god I went to heaven and back in the markoth fight I have lost so many pantheons of hollow nests to it but last week I finally did it
bro embarrassed marmu
deam bosses do get a health inccrease with nail apgrades but it still will require less hits to kill them like what were you talking about
That white palace was less than 5 minutes. damn.
wow thats pretty cool
1:05:31 blueSR: its not fair
me: wait a minute THEY MUST BE TELEPORTING!
health is increased in such a way that even with higher health it takes less strikes to kill the mans
This is the speedrun for let's play-ers.
By usual TAS timing this would be sub hour bc they go until the last input
Rewatching this, something that bugged me, sorry bothered me, throughout this TAS is that when you brought up nail scaling, you didn’t think that while the hp of the boss increases, the nail damage increases by more, still decreasing the number of nail hits needed to kill, granted, normally the nail scaling IS a bad thing, because you usually spam spells, but because it’s nail only, it’s still faster
they use the same setup as my dnd barbarian: fury and strength
On the False Knight fight, what's this "extra cycle" discussed at 6:30? I didn't understand what they're refering to
They(the tas) knocked down False knight one more time then they needed because you only knock down the false knight like 3 times and then he falls after breaking the floor the tas knocked him down before he could fall
Someone should make an abyss climb called "pure vessel pov" and it just airwalks to the top
In my first playthrough I figured out that you could fit between the first sawblade the tad fit through
*tas*

Excellent Question my friend. I have no idea :D
That thing is not supposed to be there
It was probably left by error as a result of other mod
There are no mods used in the run whatsoever, however despite simulating a current patch run this tas was actually made on patch 1.2.2.1, where that soul totem exists.
