- A couple of days ago, Constructivecynicism released the first Fullgame Any% NMG TAS for Hollow Knight, and it is absolutely MINDBLOWING.
I sat down on stream yesterday to watch it, as well as analyze and explain what is going on. Sooner rather than later I found out that there was way too much wild stuff going on to even COVER. Gather around for a wild ride of frame perfect tricks and ridiculous movement!
I added some timestamps to make different segments of the run easier to jump to. I highly recommend you look at the Uumuu segment in particular because that is the most insane maneuver in this run haha

”Why doesn’t the TAS do this?”
A lot of the questions you probably have about the TAS and what decisions it makes can be answered by giving you the community’s rulung on Wallcling Storage! It goes as following:
Wallcling storage is allowed, so long as glitchless movement through the same space with current items and room state is available to the player.
This is why the TAS gets Crystal Heart! (And doesn’t go below the Crystal Peak gauntlet entirely) Following the NMG ruleset, it is not allowed to do any Wallcling storage skips through spaces that would usually require cdash UNLESS it has cdash unlocked. This may seem a very strange way to rule it, but please consider that the ruleset was made with human runs in mind, that are unable to do all umm… this.
This is also why the TAS doesn’t skip beast’s den entirely!

Ah, gotcha. A little unfortunate that the TAS was locked to that same ruling, since as far as I'm aware that ruling was made to prevent super tedious, super precise grinding for that one trick as a make-or-break for human runs.
I assume I'm not fully understanding something, but if that's how the rules work, how come he was "allowed" to wall cling storage his way across the blue lake before he had C-dash?
Could you Wallcling storage into a cdash with the imaginary wall
@@Mockturtlesoup1 glitches are ok in nmg IF they don't enable the player (or tas) do things that would be otherwise impossible with their current equipment. So you can't use wcs to skip across a really long cdash/acid room if you haven't picked up cdash in the run yet, because "normally" you wouldn't be able to cross the room. The blue lake wcs is okay because there is nothing preventing you from crossing blue lake without the glitch!
Why didn't you just count the nail turn arounds to see how much time it saves?
It's a shame Fury isn't viable, it would be so much fun to watch speedrunners struggle with it!
You're such a great hype man for the TAS haha. TASers are such unsung heroes. People think it's easy to just "make a computer play it perfectly" and are more impressed by RTA runners, but there's so much work and experimentation and discovery involved in these, and many many RTA tricks were discovered by TASers.
like i believe if i got into it today i could like at most manage to get to the lore tablet that tells you how to use focus and even that would probably take me like Way longer then it Should xD like even just putting in the inputs if it runs on 60frames doesnt that mean the TASer has to put in like 60 seperate inputs? i mean sure smtimes i think you can copy paste like a TINY bit but yeah

I honestly just appreciate the amount of time put into this. TASers and runners both put hundreds of hours into their work and it’s really impressive

for future reference, you can use '.' (the period key) to frame-advance a youtube video, and ',' (the comma key) to frame-...retreat? a video (go back frame by frame). you can hold either key down to frame-advance/retreat rapidly (I don't know the exact rate)

That would be 0,0625x speed
Technically it’s still only 0.25x. He’s showing us that section at 0.25x yes, but us putting the video in another 0.25x doesn’t make it 0.0625x. It just shows us that at 0.25x speed. Us adding that additional 0.25x afterwards doesn’t magically add that missing detail unfortunately.

The reason the TASes are coming now is because the tool was only recently adapted to Hollow Knight (and unity games in general!) before that, the RNG was an insurmountable barrier

@@Aylas31 honestly I respect your opinion that you don't like celeste, but you can't just say that it's objectively bad just because there are parts of the game you don't like.
It's just this little detail that infuriates me a bit, that you don't say "oh I don't like celeste because" but instead say "celeste isn't a good game because", because in my opinion the features of celeste that you discussed in chat aren't features that are objectively good or bad but rather features that certain people like and others don't, so they don't inherently make a game objectively better or worse.
@@emilyerben4782 That is very fair - and when asked for a serious opinion on the game it's much more nuanced (i think the game is overall good, just not as excellent as people put it to be (even outside the mechanics that just don't match what i like). But this is of course very subjective and i obviously don't mind that people like it much more than i do).
The context of those bits (and in general any bits of me in twitch chat) is an extreme character played for giggles and the reaction it causes - it's for a laugh, it isn't meant to be taken as a thoughtful, serious take or analysis of celeste - and the people in chat are generally aware and accepting of that (otherwise i would stop doing that obvs).
I'm sorry that that taken out of its context infuriated - truly isn't the intent.

I watched this TAS like 5 or 6 times by now and I'm still amazed by the speed an precision of the TAS and all the hard work that is required for this

The linux system clock thing is because a random number generator is basically a complex transformation from an input number to an output number such that you can't see any correlation between input and output.
For example you could take the numbers 1-1000 and transform them onto values from 0 to 1. The input number is called a seed and is always going to transform to the same 0-1 value, but a seed of 1 might go to 0.2134 and 2 might go to 0.9238 and there's no regularity to it.
Now to get something that isn't the same every time you can put seeds in based on something current that's happening, for example the clock time or the number of times you've pressed attack, or the clock time plus the attacks plus the value in memory for variable x, etc, so that every time you play you get different seeds and so you get different random numbers. By using linux and setting the system clock, and then doing the same actions, you will end up with the same numbers. you might be able do this in windows too but it's just easier to do this kind of thing in linux

@BlueSR remember you can use arrow key left/right to jump by seconds and period/comma to jump by individual frames in UA-cam’s browser UI :)

its important to know that TAS's while super cool and I love them are only as good as the people who program them, this is why Humans with lots of work and effort have frequently outpaced and bested WR Tas Runs with the ability to find new routes, new info, and new tricks. its Truly a wonderous ecosystem and Runners and TAS'ers coevolve together to make the best and most perfect runs.

Curious as to how the route where you get wings and isma's instead of cdash compares with this route in a TAS
Because wall cling movement is so fast compared to what you can do rta, the upgrade to cdash speed in general movement wouldn't be as big. You wouldn't need spell twister, obviously. I *am* curious as to how the nmg rules would apply to it though. If you could wall cling storage over to the isma's room without using the soul for the fireball skips, you wouldn't need to backtrack to get the whyrmp soul again, but would that be allowed? you're doing something that could be done without wall cling storage, but it doesn't use up soul to do it. And what about the shade skip to get to wings? You'd still need to die to create the shade, right, even if you just end up wall cling storaging your way across the gap from the geo platform? And you'd need the nail upgrade too?
There is a separate TAS in development by Cuber Knight and Zippy Rhys that uses the route you’re referring to! I’m pretty sure they are towards the end of working on it too :O

No, a lot of the inputs are frame perfect, most of the time multiple frames in a row, which just isn't possible to do with any kind of input device a human could use, a keyboard or a controller just can't physically input that quickly even if the person controlling it could(they couldn't).
