Richard Donner directed the Original Christopher Reeve Superman 1 and 2, The Omen, The Toy, Scrooged, and all Lethal Weapons movies. He is one of the most underrated directors ever. Even his final movie 16 blocks with Bruce Willis and Mos Def was pretty good. He was born in 1930 & passed in 2021 at 91 years old. He doesn't get enough credit for what he accomplished.
This was filmed in Astoria, Oregon the house at the beginning is a pretty popular tourist attraction despite only being in the first part of the film. Previous owners didn’t allow visitors but the current owners now allow as long as they are respectful of the property. The historic jail at the beginning is now the Oregon Film museum, that showcases props and other information from various films that were shot in Oregon. I believe they even have the Jeep that the Fratellis were driving parked out front.
Gremlins is 100% a Christmas movie. It's Hollywood's public service announcement about why you don't buy your kids pets for Christmas. They don't take proper care of them, and then they turn into a bunch of little monsters.

The reaction from the kids to the pirate ship was genuine. They were not allowed on set until filming. So when they come off the slide and see the ship that’s their real reactions
This movie was so great. I have shown my children but now I look back and watch how everyone on there has aged and now I realize I’m getting older as well. That sucks but the movie itself is a gem literally.
"Don't you realize? The next time you see sky, it'll be over another town. The next time you take a test, it'll be in some other school. Our parents, they want the best of stuff for us. But right now, they got to do what's right for them. Because it's their time. Their time! Up there! Down here, it's our time. It's our time down here. That's all over the second we ride up Troy's bucket." Fun Fact: Film debut of Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, and Kerri Green. Novelization Fact: The novelization confirms that Chunk's (Jeff Cohen) parents actually do "adopt" Sloth (John Matuszak), going so far as to throw him a Bar Mitzvah. Heartbreaking Fact: According to Sean Astin, he was allowed to keep the treasure map used in the film. Several years later his mother Patty Duke (an actress herself) discovered it, thought it was just a crinkled piece of paper, and threw it in the bin. Historical Fact: The Fratellis are loosely based off Ma Barker and the Barker-Karpis gang during the "public enemy era" of America crime history. While Ma Barker's leadership is in dispute, she was definitely an accomplice to the gang's many robberies and murders. Ma Barker and the gang met their end in a house off Lake Weir in Florida. You should read more about them. The Inferno Fact: One Eyed Willie's ship was 105 feet long and took 2-1/2 months to construct. It was modeled after Errol Flynn's ship in The Sea Hawk (1940). The sails required more than 7,000 sq. ft. of material, the largest measured 30 ft. by 60 ft. The cast was not allowed to see the pirate ship before the scene was shot, as director Richard Donner wanted to catch their genuine reactions at the size and scope of it. When they did see it, Josh Brolin was so surprised that he exclaimed "Holy shit!" without thinking. The scene had to be re-shot. When filming ended, some of the ship's rigging was recycled for the "Pirates Of The Caribbean" ship at Disneyland, which was being renovated at the time.
This ship was fantastic and the story was that it was meant to be part of a much larger "third act" with cannon fire and explosions. The producers wanted a big sequence to end the movie with "shudder" the Octopus, but the budget was not there and I don't think Warner Bros wanted to spend any more! I also think they shot a lot more footage than was seen. It's a shame all they could do is run around the ship. Such a waste.

It was filmed in Astoria, Oregon USA. Also in some surrounding beaches and state parks. You can't go inside the house but you can walk up to it now. The jail at the beginning of the film is a film Museum.
Goonies doesn't rhyme with lagoon?? strange.... but at least I understand why it was named Goonies now. Thank you! Yes, that was the movie David was thinking about.- Toni
As a coastal Oregonian, this movie is important to our history. Sometimes i look at the ocean and picture a pirate ship sailing into the horizon. I know it won't have the same impact for you, but it's a fun time if you can suspend reality for an hour.
I moved to Astoria, where this movie was filmed, last year. In all honesty, I’m more of a Stand By Me or Monster Squad fan, but this is a fun watch. And it is still celebrated in the community. Some people have pirate flags at half mast for one eyed Willie. Anyways, it’s a beautiful community on the water that gets tons of tourists during the summer. Glad even a fraction of the town is on display here.
There's the line about the octopus being really scarey. It makes it seem that they're exaggerating, but it's a leftover line from a deleted scene of a giant octopus in the water around the ship.
@@popculturallychallenged It's was so hilariously bad and out of place that they (thank god) decided to cut it out, but they already filmed the final scene with the kids on the beach so they left it in that dialogue. Also fits with Chunk's MO of exaggerating and making up stuff so the audience don't really pay much attention to it "what? what octopus? oh it's Chunk..." 😁
Recall they saying how when the kids saw the ship it was the first time as Donner didn't want them to see it beforehand. He wanted to get that first very initial reaction, thinking it would be the best way.
I pretty sure some of it is their first reactions, but they have said that they had to do another take to edit together, because the first time the kids saw the ship, they dropped several f-bombs just from sheer surprise. This still had to get a PG rating, so they couldn’t use all of that. I almost dropped some of those myself, which would have been bad, being a rather foul mouthed kid with rather straight laced parents who were sitting next to me. 😄
The thing is, the kid DOES understand Spanish 😂 That's why the hand gestures and body language he uses go along with what he was saying. He was just being a mischievous brat and telling her outrageous stuff... because he could and his friends and the mom wouldn't know 🤣
A lot young actors in this Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, Martha Plimpton, Joe Pantoliano, Robert Davi, Anne Ramsey and the late John Matuszak Oakland Raiders (Sloth).
Anne Ramsey is also no longer with us. A year before John Matuszak, in fact. She passed away not long after her last movie _Throw Momma From The Train_ was released (hint, hint to our lovely reactors here 😉).
After seeing this film for the first time as a kid, I planned to climb into my attic to see if there was a treasure map up there. Of course, I didn't in the end because I was an arachnophobe and thus too scared of what spiders might be up there. There was likely no treasure map up there but it's a great example of how this movie stimulated a child's imagination. From the writer of Gremlins by the way, Richard Donner also directed Superman: The Movie (1978) hence both references.
Chunk: I got it! I got it (splash)...I don't got it All: You klutz! Chunk: Hope it's not a deposit bottle! For some reason that has made me laugh since the 80's when I was a kid
I had somehow never seen this before. You can definitely feel the Spielberg influence. As for other 80s movies, Stand By Me is a great one but you've seen it. Stephen King writes kids so well and their friendships seem so real in that one. Good to see you enjoying a reaction. I think 40 minutes is a decent length for the edit. Maybe try Dead Poets Society? That just sneaks into the 80s at 1989. We need more Robin Williams in our lives.
Does that only apply to treasure or would it apply to the ship or boat? Could that apply to a car left on the side of the road? If it does, I might be finding me a new car soon.... LOL - Toni 🤓
At that time, Oregon had certain "treasure trove" statutes in effect. If I'm understanding them (and any amendments that would apply in mid-1980s) correctly, state authorities would have the ultimate rights of possession for any artifacts/treasure of historical significance (especially if found on public land), but would be obligated to fully compensate the finder for the value of the treasure. I'm not sure how it applies, though, if part of the treasure floats away from where it was found, like in this movie. As for anything like an abandoned car, or treasure that isn't of historical value, I don't know.
Here is a List of The 7 Most Famous Movies Filmed in Astoria 1. The Goonies (1985) Best locations: Oregon Film Museum, 38th Street, Lower Columbia Bowl ... 2. Kindergarten Cop (1990) Best locations: John Jacob Astor School, Downtown Astoria ... 3. Short Circuit (1986) Best locations: Hume Street, Astoria-Meyler Bridge, Bonneville Dam ... 4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 (1993) Best locations: Tongue Point Hangar ... 5. Free Willy (1993) ... 6. The Ring Two (2005) ... 7. Benji the Hunted (1987) ...
That's so interesting that both of you didn't see this movie growing up in the 80s! 😮 Just goes to show how future generations sensationalize older generations! And make them bigger and more impressive then they actually were.
Richard Donner was Superman director too. What/who is Josh Brolin's father...I can never remember his name, actor, I always get confused with Tom Skerritt and Thomas Brolin, a Swedish footballer from the 90s? lol. Goonies was filmed in Astoria, Oregon, mostly. Love young Samwise in it as a kid and his father by adoption was og Gomez Adams, John Astin lol o7
Funny enough this is loosely based off of an Oregon coast myth/legend of a sunken Spanish galleon off of Manzanita beach. They know it is out there somewhere as bits of royal-stamped beeswax and other parts have washed up after storms over the years. And the local indigenous tribes tell tales of a ship stranding there, and the survivors marching inland in a hope to get to Spanish settlements
This is what I understand about treasure finding law (though not an expert so consult a lawyer if you plan to go hunt treasure): If you find a wrecked ship/buried treasure with no legitimate owners then you get ownwership of goods (or their value when sold to a museum, as some things of historical or cultural significance may have a government force you to give it up) but there is a significant federal tax to the country whose waters/land it was in plus then you pay income tax to your country. If in international waters, then I think you only pay income tax to your country. Of course all that's only if the find is old enough there are no legitimate legal claims to the ship/treasure or its contents still on the books. If it's a relatively recent lost ship/hidden treasure (less than 200 years old let's say) there could actually be descendants of the owners &/or an insurance company that has main rights (since they would've paid out a claim on it after a certain amount of time it's been lost). Still you would get a nice "finder's fee", which of course again you have to pay income tax on.
Enjoyed watching the Goonies with you guys for your first time. 🎉😂 Some other titles around this time you may enjoy, too, are Monster Squad, The Explorers, Flight of the Navigator, and Howard the Duck.
If you are referring to Kerri Green (Andy) as the girl you've seen in another 80's movie, you are probably talking about, "Lucas" with Corey Haim & Charlie Sheen.
Omg gremlins is a kid movie. It’s wacky and weird but not scary. But than again this lady is afraid of everything on the planet so it will probably be to much for her which is so hilarious cause the movie was made for kids.
Also, did you just ask if a handful of precious gems was enough to save a house in 1985? LMAO Those gems were worth MILLIONS even in 1985. Those were 5 carat+ stones. The house they lived in was worth about 100k back then. Literally they could have saved every single one of their homes, and had millions left over.
Maritime salvage I know you get to keep at least a certain amount of it. They only needed enough to pay off their mortgages in the Goondocks which would at least partially derail Troy's father's plans for a golf course. Richard Donner also directed 1978 Superman. That's why the Superman shirt Sloth was wearing. Technically he gets a Mogwi for Christmas.
Salvage rights. If you find an abandoned sea vessel or wreck you do get the rights to anything and everything of value. Unless Spain claims it. That's an old joke... originating from numerous times Spain has tried to take the valuables that people who search for and recover artifacts from ship wrecks have found.
The past 30 years, or so there were court cases dealing with sunken treasures found. The end result was that whatever country owned the loot, when it was lost, can claim it. That happened because of a salvager claiming gold coins off the coast of Florida. The Spanish government became involved as it was 'originally' their gold, although it was several hundred years left under the sea. The international courts ruled it was Spanish owned and a new law was enacted.
I brushed it out and didn't wear my little bun that I normally wear. I might have gotten some low lights too since it looks darker. Thank you so much for your kind words. I have added Astoria, Oregon to our bucket list. - Toni 🥰

I definitely want to watch Dead Poets Society soon. That's one that neither of us have seen! 😃
@@popculturallychallenged Excellent 😁
My sister actually had this movie playing on a big screen for her Bridal Shower
Great movie! Great seeing y'all!
It was great to see you as well!! - Toni 🤓
Great 80s movies like this you should check out are Monster Squad, Explorers, The Navigator, and The Lost Boys.
Thank you for the recommendations. I have added them to our list. - Toni 🤓
Oh I LOVE "Explorers"🥰have also Recommended that!👍
i Miss Thee 80;s
I think I do too! I feel like middle school and high school were so fun for me. - Toni 😊
This was the best reaction that was uploaded to UA-cam today. Hope you guys had a ton of fun with this one.
Thank you so much for watching with us. - Toni 🥰
i’ve heard by a kind of salvage law the first person to take possession of the treasure would have rights to it
Does that only apply to treasure or would it apply to the ship or boat?

17:07 REVERSE PRESSURE🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊
That was crazy!! - Toni 😂
That's so interesting that both of you didn't see this movie growing up in the 80s! 😮 Just goes to show how future generations sensationalize older generations! And make them bigger and more impressive then they actually were.
Real Genius comes to mind as another 80s movie you both would like. Young Val Kilmer
You guys really need to see SIMON BIRCH. You’d love it.
Thanks!
The closest thing we have to this type of nostalgia today is Stranger Things ❤
It does have that same feel to it! :) I'm hoping to get Toni to watch that at some point too!
I checked it out a while ago, and I think this movie is filmed in Astoria on the northwest Coast
A few people mentioned that and we have added it to our bucket list. We have a few places we would like to visit on the Northwest Coast. - Toni 🤓
The Goonies was filmed in ASTORIA, OREGON ❤🎥
That's a beautiful area!
@@popculturallychallenged it really is a lot of TV shows and movies are filmed there 😀❤️🎥
Toni would absolutely love ET
Amen to THAT!👍
I think I have seen ET, I'm really not 100% sure but I do remember the glowing finger and the line "ET go home..." - Toni
@@popculturallychallenged It's a truly Wonderful Movie; I'd watch "E.T." more often, but it always Me Cry-Ugly!😭(LOL)
The Last Dragon is a forgotten 80s classic
Thank you, I have added it to our list. - Toni 🤓
Also a lost 80s classic with Sean Astin and Kevin bacon is white water summer! Great summer movie, and they be the first reactors ever to react to it.
Sho'nuff and a hero called Leroy! Only in the 80s! Oh, and Vanity 😍
Thanks!
If you are referring to Kerri Green (Andy) as the girl you've seen in another 80's movie, you are probably talking about, "Lucas" with Corey Haim & Charlie Sheen.
yep, that's what David was thinking about. - Toni 🤓
@@popculturallychallenged Toni, you should watch and react to that one. I'll be watching for it. =)
You both should watch Better Off Dead (1985). Great comedy
oh, toni, dear, you're not getting away from gremlins. And I'm not one of the ones here to torture you
😂 - I hope it's not too scary.... - Toni 😢
Good Luck😉She's going to Fight Us on that one!
@@popculturallychallengedIt's not scary. Well not to me anyway.
Omg gremlins is a kid movie. It’s wacky and weird but not scary. But than again this lady is afraid of everything on the planet so it will probably be to much for her which is so hilarious cause the movie was made for kids.
the enduring message being that toni needs pizza
😂 - Toni
So excited to watch this!
You gotta see the Goonies R good enough video by Cyndi Lauper next. It features all the WWF stars in it.
That sounds like fun! -Toni 🤓
Yes how have you not seen this.
Really not sure. I think I was scared to watch it when I was younger and never thought about it again. - Toni 🤓
There was an 🐙 planned for this movie but it didn't look real enough so the scene was cut out
Don’t feel bad for not seeing it. I was born in 74 and didn’t see this til 2000 ish lol
I'm so glad it wasn't just me, though I took a little bit longer to watch it. - Toni 🤓
Check out the movies The Lost Boys(1987), Little Monsters(1989), and Weird Science(1985).
Thank you for the recommendations. I have added them to our list. - Toni 🤓
A funny story my wife and her sister knew a lady who looked just like anne ramsey
Gremlins is Gross!!
Toni won’t like it!!
David, remember the microwave and I think a blender too??!!
Would be Worth It just to See Her FACE!😂(LOL)
Do I want to know more about the microwave and blender? The only thing David remembers is the girl.... 🤦🏻♀️ - Toni
@@popculturallychallenged Toni: Y'all watch "Gremlins" and the one thing You WON'T BE MAD about is Phoebe Cates!😂(LMAO)
After watching this video from start to finish I am convinced that waffles are superior to pancakes.
I can’t believe you’ve never seen this

Toni, did you do something with your hair? It looks nice. And it was filmed in Astoria, Oregon. A beautiful coastal town.
I brushed it out and didn't wear my little bun that I normally wear. I might have gotten some low lights too since it looks darker. Thank you so much for your kind words. I have added Astoria, Oregon to our bucket list. - Toni 🥰
@popculturallychallenged I'm hoping to retire there. Been 4 times now.
