    READ:
Had a massive brain fart and thought this film was directed by Steven Spielberg. Richard Donner, was the director, while Spielberg was the screenwriter. Though I see pretty on point parallels through Steven’s writing, and the commentary is reflective on that…gotta give proper respect towards the Richard Donner. This film is so much fun and he captured that perfectly through his vision in my eyes. Again, complete brain fart, but wanted to update you guys on it and not mislead!

You're not the first to make that mistake, a lot of people assume Spielberg directed this, though I didn't realise that Spielberg had a story credit until just now; I knew he was a producer and his fingerprints are all over it.

One of my all-time favorites. Filmed in and around Astoria Oregon. Very beautiful. About 15-20 years ago a DVD came out with all the behind the scenes and Donner included tons of great tidbits about how wonderful it was working with kids in general, but specifically to this film. Really great.

Just about the time that this movie came out, I kept hearing people saying "Hey you guys!" and was curious what that was from. And then I saw it on video tape and instantly fell in love with this movie. For me, it's everything...Chunk doing the Trouffle Shuffle, Data doing his impression of Inspector Gadget, Ralph telling Rosalita that the house was full of drugs and the gang solving the mystery of One-Eyed Willie. Even the Fratellis were hilarious...that was Joey "Pants" Pantiliano...Cypher from the Matrix. And you're right, each character had a time to shine in this film and the chemistry with the kids was spot on. It's all those things, and then some, that makes this movie a classic. I never tire watching it over and over again. I had fun watching you getting a kick out of this movie. Someone mentioned Anne Ramsey and "Throw Mama from the Train" that sounds like a great idea.

For me and the millions of kids born in the mid to late 70s and was in elementary school by the 80s, these movies were magic. This was lightning in a bottle for your childhood to see these in the theater. Goonies, Ghostbusters, E.T., Back to the Future, Return of the Jedi, The Last Dragon, the Neverending Story, Top Gun... I can go on and on. This was like a rare sweet spot in movies. The 70s were going through some kind of emo period with dark Sci-Fi like Logan's Run or deep thought adult experiments like Taxi Driver. The 90s films were transitioning into new technologies and a finding a new footing in a post-Cold War world, just look at Timothy Dalton's run in James Bond. But the 80s, even the most mediocre of film is still remembered and has that guilty pleasure effect tacked on it.

  • @brittyn

This was filmed on the Oregon coast; Astoria is the town they live in, and then the coastline you see is Cannon Beach. The jail from the opening is a film museum you can visit now, because Astoria was used in other movies too: Short Circuit, Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy, Ring 2…
I grew up in the 80s in Oregon, and this movie pretty much defined my childhood. I had a group of friends on my cul-de-sac, and we always were trying to recreate our own adventures like the Goonies!

Y'know, it's re-watching these through other people's eyes as first-timers, but especially in your case as a filmmaker, that I can appreciate how well-constructed the story progression is in many of these scenes, like the back and forth of tension when Chunk jumps into the street stopping the next car, and the light clicking on showing it's the Fratellis.

This is a top tier film. Because it feels so genuine. Despite knowing full well it's a movie you do go on the adventure with them. We all became Goonies. It somehow managed to capture exactly what childhood groups are like. To this day it feels authentic in a way very few films every do. Plus, it is just ludicrously cool. It's dripping with cool. Who the hell didn't want to find treasure as a kid?

Another great reaction to one of my favourite 80's classics. It's interesting that you mistook this for a Spielberg-directed film, but it's an understandable mistake to make. Back in the late 80's I made a similar mistake in thinking that The Lost Boys (1987) was directed by Richard Donner. I found out later that he was the producer and was originally going to direct it. And after working with Corey Feldman in The Goonies, he'd already cast him in The Lost Boys...As David (the part Kiefer Sutherland plays) because it was originally going to be somewhat of a spiritual "sequel" or successor to The Goonies, with younger kids playing the vampires.
But then Richard Donner chose to direct "Lethal Weapon", and gave Joel Schumacher the job of directing, at which point it was changed from a kids vampire movie to a teen vampire movie. So Feldman was recast as one of the Frog brothers. But the similarities between The Goonies and The Lost Boys were still maintained to some extent, especially the scenes with the kids riding around on BMX bikes, and the general sense of adventure. So it would be interesting to see you react to The Lost Boys :)

I'm sure I'm not the only person who was thinking "Goonies never say die" when Samwise had to do the thing in ROTK. 🌋😉
Anyways, my friend Kelly had a sleepover for her birthday. The next day we were all going to the movies together. The choices were GOONIES and SHANGHAI SURPRISE. Because I was still only 12 and SS was a PG-13 movie, her mom decided we should see GOONIES. In retrospect I saved the day but at the time I was the most pissed off because I really wanted to be Madonna when I grew up. 🤭
When I saw this thumbnail, I decided I'd go make a cup of tea before I sat down to watch. Without thinking I started singing the theme song "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" from memory. Now ask me what I did this morning. 🤷‍♀️

Uncharted 4 .. but the kids bop version 🤣😂🤣 .. Such a good movie. Data is also in the Netflix movie Finding Ohana, which is like a budget Goonies haha, still a fun watch imo.. and his character is "Keoki" 😊 (though credited as "George" 🙄)
The game Sea of Thieves used the ship cave area as inspiration for the Pirate Legend cave/hideout

Goonies was never part of my childhood unfortunately. Even though I was about 13 when released, my childhood mostly consisted of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, Monty Python, Spaghetti Westerns, etc by this stage of my life. It is a great film though, even to this day. Also the 80's seems to be a time when children's movies seemed to become a bit more mature, and less childish, tapping more into what kids were really like at the time.

For me, the joy of this movie is the cast. I LOVE these kids so much. The chemistry is pure magic, but you were so right to point out that the magic is captured, partially, by the terrific editing and mixing of the audio. The writing also allows each of the characters to have a moment. FYI, Mama Fratelli was played by Anne Ramsey, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Throw Mama From the Train, a retelling of Strangers on a Train that also stars Danny DeVito and Billy Crystal. Highly recommend that film too.

As far as I know from all the director's commentaries that I've seen, that 'chemistry' between the child stars was one-hundred percent organic. They really had a blast on the set of this movie. Each and every one of them treasured it as a childhood memory shared between friends. That kind of makes Goonies all the more beautiful in my opinion.

Grew up with this movie, and for the longest time could never articulate why the scene where they start to take the treasure then Mikey goes "Except that. That's Willie's." gets me welled up a bit. Now watching your reaction I think it has to due with the integrity this kid shows. He's about to get his home taken away so he understands possessions that are meaningful beyond materialism.

A childhood classic. I grew up on this movie. Love all the characters, but Data is tops.
Sean Astin has always been phenomenal, and his 'Our time' speech is one of the best scenes. When I heard he was cast as Samwise, I knew he was perfect for the role.

Great childhood movie. Funfacts: they leave the line in the end about them seeing a giant octopus, even though that scene was deleted from the theatrical cut. R2-D2 is on the deck of the pirate ship at the end. And this movie takes place in Astoria, which is the same town where Kindergarten Cop would later take place.

Last year they did a virtual reunion with the cast and Spielberg and Donner. Everyone loved Donner and when they wrapped he told Spielberg he was heading to his house in Hawaii to get away from kids….Spielberg flew all the kids to Hawaii and had them wait in Donner’s house for him to arrive.😂😂😂👍
