    Would you cover the ribs in closed cell insulation, Greg? Just thinking about bridging and condensation. I've seen some do that, but generally doesn't seem to be done, which I can't figure out. Thanks again for your top class channel and all your knowledge and ideas 👍

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  11 місяців тому +1

      If you cover all your insulation with a complete vapour barrier including sealing the edges down to the floor then no moisture can get in there to condense so there is no need to worry about the gaps. Have you seen this video I made to prove this? ua-cam.com/video/ommqMG7RjXg/v-deo.htmlsi=jIqVv1yQ8OUKANia

    7:20 I like to place the pads _almost_ in the middle & slightly twisted.
    As you pointed out a few seconds previously you're trying to stop the ringing & placing the pad exactly is likely alter the pitch of the ring rather than stifling it.

    Thank you for reminding people that adding sound deadening everywhere has diminishing returns. I've seen so many builds where people spend so much time applying far more than necessary.
    The FIT RV came out with a couple of videos in mid 2022 on this topic that I can highly recommend for those that want to understand more of the science and see some semi-quantitative results.

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Рік тому +13

      I’m trying to explain that this heavy stuff is of no benefit on the deeply ridged panels as that already does not vibrate or drum like the Fiat panels do. So many are misled with wrong info.
      Hopefully I can help to change that. 😊

    • @alutious

      just saw a vid of a guy dropping a tool on the floor and showing the difference between insulating and not. Um i guess he drops tools alot? So he wouldn't be allowed to work on anything above the first floor as that is pretty much an instant termination. I keep seeing people spending 3 hours cutting small slices and doing the entire lower ridges of the floor. I might do a couple of strips behind the drivers seat/middle hallway to do a comparison. I deliberately did not buy a ton of the stuff, i will have a low roof van. I have where the windows are planned so i hope 2 boxes are enough. I will entirely cover the wheel wells, someone did a test and the thicker stuff i have didn't work as well as the thinner silver stuff. Also 2 of the manufacturer's produce in the Russian Federation, I wonder how that is going or if they have relocated. The one US company i found is extremely expensive (they sell large sheets).

    Just as an additional thing you can use 3M double sided tape and the Sikaflex together if you’re impatient for waiting for Sikaflex to dry. good for situations where it’s a panel and you just want to stick and get on with it to finish the build. I’ve done it a lot with roof paneling etc where screwing wasn’t an option.

    I've been slowly putting together a day van for several months and was very close to wrapping the wheel arches in sound deadening as I had a fair bit spare and obviously seen 99.9% of people doing this. The explanation of why it wouldn't work and why closed cell would has saved me a load of bother. Really helpful and explained so even I as a first timer can easily pick it up. Very much appreciated - I'll also be taking a look at my roof. Definitely following 😊

    Good to see you back Greg - the bonded joints you replaced highlighted a real problem with the way these vehicles are made.
    Bonded joints represent a large proportion of the strength and integrity of the vehicle's structure - there is obviously a deterioration in the bonded joints over time, as you demonstrated with the roof panels.
    On older vehicles it may be prudent to re-inforce bonded areas with a fillet of Sikaflex even if they appear sound - where the bond has deteriorated it makes sense to remake the joint as you did with the roof.
    It would not be too difficult to do this, as once insulation and trim has been fitted the parts of the vehicle with failing bonds can move around and not be noticed.

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Рік тому +4

      Yes theres only one or two places where you benefit from these heavy sheet applied as i've shown. The problem when other youtube videos show these pads being used in the wrong locations and it's the wrong application for the material, then everyone else copies it because they dont know any better and are looking to see what others have done. So hopefully if i can give some better advice and more importantly the reasons why, that will help a few out there. Will give Lou your regards :D Thanks

      Thank you for a great comment. Really nice to read your feedback.
      What I was hoping to convey was it’s about using the right product in the right area and that noise reduction on floors and wheel arches is better dealt with by sound absorbing foam and not by sound deadening sheet. Hope that was explained ok 👍🏼

  • @SPQR-Z
    @SPQR-Z 7 місяців тому +1

    This is a more common problem then people realize. Most people have no idea that the skin and structure are actually bonded together with body adhesive. Our brand new Sprinter had the same problems although not as bad. Sikaflex actually makes a specific body adhesive and I used about 3 tubes of it on every contact point between skin and structure. That really helped eliminate the tin can sound going down the road. Then the sound deadening dynamats installed and the van was literally 75% quieter then before. I recommend that anyone building a conversion van go through this exercise before insulating and interior wall panels are installed

    Great Vlog Greg I have seen people use lots of that material in their builds and often reflect back to the Sprinter build to question if theirs is overkill! Looking forward to more Vlogs many thanks

      It’s about using the right product. The heavy pads are only designed to stop vibration. If you want to stop road noise or rain on your roof etc then you need a sound absorbing insulation like dense foam sheets to absorb the sound waves come through the structure from outside.

    I hadn’t though of testing that Greg thank you. I’m just taking the floor out and the bulkhead so with it now empty it’s a great time for testing for rattle before it’s all covered in insulation 👍 like someone else mentioned this tip applies to all makes and model of van so another very useful video. Again a great video, Greg! One suggestion, if I may: Sikaflex 554 is rated at 3,5 N/mm², whereas the 522 is half as strong at 1,8 N/mm². While 522 was O.K. for the large contact area of the floor, I'd prefer the 554 for the narrower beads on this roof. Possibly an overabundance of caution on my part, but I figured I mention it. Cheers from Germany - Folker

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Рік тому +2

      Yes it would appear to have better adhesive figures so thanks for the suggestion. I'm sure the 522 will be ok and I already had tubes of it available so didn't need to buy another different tube.

    Haha, top job again Greg as always.. Been watching a few of your budget build and low and behold I just did the same to my ribs and panel stays on the Sprinter as I have had chance to crack on and get something done. I used the 3M 560 PU which is pretty much the same as the Sika, albeit it does shrink a tad compared the Sika. Will continue catching this journey. Take care!

    Happy that you confirmed a thought I had about the sound deadening material. So many people use that thin reflective material around their wheelwellls and I did the same thing. While installing it I'm think "man this stuff works so much better on the ceiling and around areas that make drum like sounds"... But hey hopefully adding that to the wells adds something. Thanks for the video

    Really informative, well explained and helpful, especially on the different types and uses for the sound deadening and absorbing foam and very interesting on the bond becoming detached on the van from the roof panels and how it’s bonded on the side. You’re right would drive you mad if all that noise was there when you finished - what a difference! Thanks again, a fantastically helpful video - all the very best, David 👍
