      I often hold the base with my other hand and run it along the edge of the board like a fence guide.

    • @tonystacey3347
      @tonystacey3347 Рік тому +2

      I’m in awe of the jigsaw accuracy- yes dewalt are top end tools but I’ve given up trying to cut anything with jigsaws. I have however got a tracksaw which is a game changer for accurate strait sheet cuts.
      One thing you didn’t mention was blade depth being just a tooth more than the board width makes for a better cut.
      This vid will be useful for all van builds - everyone has to go round a wheel arch! Bet it gets h high proportion of future hits👍🏻
      The big thing here is the work you did with the insulation and the battens on which you’re laying the ply. Don’t scrimp on this or 12mm ply will wobble/bow under weight of thing standing on it.
      A really top class “episode” with this one Greg - mr V - I salute you!

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Рік тому +1

      @@tonystacey3347 thank you Tony, you are dead right 👍🏼 the reason I can get away with using 12mm for the floor and not the usual 18mm for flooring is the closely spaced battens and the screw fixings to keep it well secured. Thank you for such a great comment 🙏🏼😊

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Рік тому +2

      Most blades are up cutting because the pull against the saw base and work like a scissor pulling the base down to the workpiece. Sometimes you need to cut on the face but don’t want loads of chip out. So that’s when a down cutting blade is really handy. Just have to take it easy so it doesn’t jump around.

    Easy way to avoid 'tear out' on any cut is to simply set your saw to only cut a few millimetres on the first cut, then set it 'just' over the thickness of the material being cut on the second cut.

    Really enjoying this build. We have done caravan holidays for 20 years, always stayed on sites & used their facilities, only showered in the caravan twice! My wife doesn't want to wild camp so I will be doing a similar build to this with under-sink jerry cans instead of huge water tanks, but with a toilet cubicle for privacy on a LWB van. This is brilliant tuition, just what I need.

    Excellent! I've not come across down cut jigsaw blades before so will check these out next time I need to make finish cuts on the top side. Good use of bevel cutting for the roll of the arch and great work around the arches and at the front. I have the same, but older model of jigsaw and the bevel edge 'set lever' tends to fall open if I'm not careful. You can also set the aggressiveness of the cut stroke to limit rips and tears but it's always worth testing on a bit of scrap. I saw you had a decent T-square, framing square and straight edge. These do make a huge difference if you're cutting sheet material and along with some clamps are great investment tools, as you have. Don’t forget you can use your drill to screw in screws and it’s useful to set the drill clutch for even pressure if you don’t have an impact driver (which can over-torque). Final point is, it’s good to raise the circular saw blade if your blade isn’t so fine-toothed to limit damage to the material; this way the teeth aren’t pulling ‘through’ the sheet so much. Interested to know if you’re going to coat or seal the plywood? It’s impossible to seal it completely and it will breathe with the seasons anyhow. A highly thinned coat of varnish or even PVA(?) might have some use but I’m undecided. Keen to know your thoughts and what you’re doing next. Thanks!!

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Рік тому

      They are all fantastic tips and obviously coming from experience so thank you for taking the time to share those. We did seal the previous plywood floor in our sprinter van with a water based varnish so was going to do the same with this one. Great comment thank you 🙏🏼😃
