      Hi greg, i have the 2000w inverter but i have followed this diagram of electrics set up, what have you used to connect your inverter to the blue cable that feeds the 2 single sockets, my husband says the wires in the blue cable are too thick for a 3 pin plug to be plugged into the inverter

      Excellent tutorial Greg well done indeed.
      With regards to the sockets when on ehu, I assume that the inverter output sockets have the same limitations as when running from battery power and the 2G socket in your diagram has regular mains limitations together with its own fuses/ distribution for 230.

    When you fully retire from being a Mechanical Services Engineer, you'd definitely find work as an Instructor. Your manner, delivery and time served knowledge across a wide range of areas is pleasurable to listen to. Thank you for taking the time to put this together. One question please; the interweb gives everyone a voice. There are so many (and I was once one of those people) that don't really understand AGM battery management. Yes we can search for info, however if you did a vid on this and used 'lay man's' terms, it would provide muchly needed, clear detail that isn't out there in abundance. Cheers!

      Ok, that's a great idea, I can include some of our energy-saving ideas too.
      The battery capacity is directly related to the resting battery voltage.
      So keeping a close eye on what the battery voltage is lets you know how much power you have left to use.

    Hello Greg,
    Thank you so much, your help and advice through these videos has given me the confidence to intake installations which I otherwise may not have done.
    Your videos are always very clear and concise, not only advising what to do, but why and as such invaluable to me.
    In addition to that which I've already mentioned you do seem to think of everything a novice like me will not only need in terms of advice, materials and links to purchase those, but also any questions that I may have.
    I would also like to mention your generosity and philanthropic nature towards others in providing all that you do free of charge to those who perhaps would be unable to afford to pay for others to undertake their installations and in so doing I'm sure you have helped avoid costly mistakes and perhaps even saved lives.
    Thank you Greg.

    Thank, this must be the best van electrics video I've ever seen with clear guidance in an understandable format. The bonus is that you've kept an eye on the costs as well as some UA-camrs put in the best kit available regardless of cost because they are sponsored by suppliers.
    Thanks again, I'm looking forward to the next installment.😁

    • @GregVirgoe

    PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THIS NOTICE.
    In accordance with the latest UK wiring regulations the incoming mains hook up connection will need to be connected to a small consumer unit which includes a RCD and double pole MCBs for short circuit protection and overcurrent protection of the 230v mains distribution.

      Great insight to a novice Greg😊

    • @justinbolt1356
      @justinbolt1356 Рік тому

      As a caveat, to be code compliant just about anywhere, you would need to include a RCD "TYPE A" and MCB on the output of the inverter with the simple solution here to be to wire the hookup between the inverter and the board.
      In all honesty though this inverter does not seem to have ECE R10 Certification for Automotive use, so could not be legalised in many countries as part of a van conversion project and registration, it would certainly be reason for a MOT fail where I am!

    • @andym1908
      @andym1908 Рік тому +2

      @justinbolt1356 it wouldn't even come under MOT regulations in the UK .An inverter is not part of a. UK MOT .

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Рік тому +4

      @@justinbolt1356 I wrote to Renogy and they confirmed that the inverter has residual current detection on the ac output so that combined with a fused plug means the outlet is protected and no further devices are needed off the outlet. Here in the uk the internal campervan components do not fall into a vehicle MOT and it is up to the individual to get them check and certified by qualified electrician but that it not a legal requirement either. 😊

    Great video. Well explained. I've installed that exact controller and it's worth noting that when solar and alternator are connected unless the solar is switched off the alternator can only put in 15 amps, not the full 30. You could switch the solar off manually before travelling or I fitted an ignition switched relay which turns the solar off automatically when the engine ignition is turned on. Otherwise it works very well.

    • @GregVirgoe
      @GregVirgoe  Рік тому +2

      That’s interesting. I will do some clamp meter readings to verify that when I get it up and running. That won’t be an issue if you’re driving during the day as it should be made up with solar and at night the solar should be off. Not sure that would have much of an affect. Have you taken any working readings yourself?? 😊

    • @johnburnside9668
      @johnburnside9668 Рік тому +1

      I have the renogy meter and it does show the difference. I'm sure it was in the manual somewhere. I only have a 100w panel and don't often see more than 5 amps coming in, if I'm driving with the solar on in daylight ,I'm only getting a max of 20 amps in(5+15) instead of the full 30 with solar off.

Is there an advantage to running a negative cable all the way back to the starter battery rather than attaching to the chassis /bodywork nearer the leisure battery or dc-dc unit? I read such mixed things and some seem to say don't run a negative cable back to the starter battery if you have a smart alternator and put it on the chassis instead. Great video. Keeps it simple. This is the kind of set-up that I'm looking for. I noticed you have two leisure batteries. I beleive that for split-chargers, vehicle and leasure should be the same but for dc-to-dc the leisure batteries may be lead or lithium and you can set up profiles for your batteries. You may have covered this subject in another video but some discussion on how you can mix the batteries, especially with this Renogy controller would be helpful.

    I was looking exactly this type of a demonsteative video in plain English. Greg, you did that very job so perfectly and in a beautiful manner. Where to start on electrical installation in my campervan building project was a big challenge for me, and indeed a decisive factor if I should simply buy a fully kitted out van or build my own. Of course, there are many benefits to building your own system. I don’t know when you made this particular video, but if you have made subsequent videos after this and have suggested even better and cost effective system, then please send me the link. What would be helpful is what +/- budget should be allowed for complete electrical set up. Thank you so much Greg.

    Thanks so much for a great informative video. I am an electrician and just starting to dabble with solar to power some security cameras, cellular router and a cellular booster to keep an eye on our trailer over the winter. We are in a seasonal campground in Ontario, Canada and the campground is closed during the winter. This of course brings some challenges as the cold temperatures here don’t play nicely with our LiFePO4 batteries. We have to run a thermostatically controlled 78W heater to keep our batteries above freezing. We are going to try and achieve this using 680W of solar and 2 - 100W Renogy Smart batteries. Seeing as this is a very natural campground there are lots of trees and with that lots of shade. At best even in the summer we only get about 3.5-4 hours of full sunlight on our panels. Luckily we have the Renogy One Core that we can monitor over the internet from home so we can see how the setup is doing. We can only walk in during the winter as they close the gates to vehicles. So if we do have to do anything to the system we cannot drive up in a car with a generator and top off the batteries. I think our only option would be to bring the batteries home, charge them then go back. Fingers crossed we have enough solar and battery to make it through! Thanks again for the easy to understand video as I will take some of what you covered and add it next season.

I installed a consumer unit for the mains input and used it to also house a dual DC breaker for the solar panels. I have a Victron mains charger. Also got the Renogy battery monitor unit which works great and the BT unit to monitor from my phone via the Renogy home apps. The system has worked flawlessly., I’m a big fan of the Renogy kit.
