- It sounds paradoxical, but today it appears that we understand more about the universe than our society. We have created systems that have outgrown our capacity to genuinely understand and control them as evinced by the ongoing financial crisis. Recent advancements in the study of complex systems are able to offer new insights into the workings of many real-world systems.
While our traditional ways of thinking and problem solving have been strongly shaped by the success of the reductionist approach taken in science, the new science of complexity focuses on interconnection and co-dependence. It is a paradigmatic shift away from analyzing the nature of "things" to uncovering and understanding the network of interdependence lying behind and influencing the "things" themselves.
As a prominent example, the first global economic network analysis is discussed, offering a new perspective on some relevant issues. For instance, how unequal and unstable is our economy in truth? And is this actually the result of a few puppet masters orchestrating the developments behind the scenes?
James B. Glattfelder grew up in the Swiss mountains and his interests include the philosophy of science in addition to societal and environmental issues. In 2011 he co-authored the study "The Network of Global Corporate Control" which was widely covered in the international media and sparked controversial discussions. He is co-head of quantitative research at Olsen Ltd in Zurich, an FX investment manager focusing on market-stabilizing algorithms. James holds an M.Sc. in theoretical physics and a Ph.D. in the study of complex systems, both from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, and turned 40 this year.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Thank you. I follow work done in complexity at the Santa Fe Institute. The SFI is another such educational institution that researches complexity and network systems. Thank you for revealing some of the nature of the global financial system. It may be an emergent property of the nature of capitalist transaction, however, as another commentator stated, "do not discount the conspiracy theory too much !". Avenues of control are well documented at look at who benefits from said control. So perhaps a little bit of both ? Thanks again Mr. James Glattfelder.

The setting on my camera lens determines the quality of my picture. The setting in my mind determines whether I'm going to be wealth or poor - never the others. If I realize and understand this part of the movie, I can follow the other parts more easily. When I get born in a wealthy family, they will give me all the bits and peaces and settings, to also understand life. I will get rich too without their money..

I remember probably about 60 years ago, chasing a thought until it became never-ending, thus irrelevant.
Today I listen to people delving into a problem deeply.
It is like a horse with blinders, they can only see directly. They do not see the Environment, thus they come to a very defined solution, which is wrong.
Looking at the big picture, one only needs to make some very simple changes.
Example: No one person or Corporation may own shares or sit on a Board of Directors of more than one Newspaper or news media.
PS: I remember a Gramical program was included in Windows XP Professional, this is a prime example of our World.
after checking Forbes´s list of billionaires (1342 on the list as of 20 may 2013), it seems to make sense to conclude that the top 200 or so on the list are probably the core influencers Glatterfelder points to when talking about the 146 TOP PLAYERS who potentially control 40% of all transnational corporation´s value on the planet.
Jean-Baptiste Vervaeck Forbes top list doesn't even address the elite bro. Only the top tier we know about.

It's incorrect for a shareholder with 51% or a political party with 51% to be allowed full control. Minorities must be represented in correct proportion also. It would be more reasonable to give each shareholder and each voter power to allocate or delegate their share of the investment, vote, or tax contribution.

It is actually NOT the case that "we know more about the universe than we know about how to live in peace" (to paraphrase). It is the opposite. At least among THOSE WHO RULE(D) THE WORLD. And THAT, my fellow non-elite humans, is precisely the problem. Why?? Because peace, harmony, the equitable distribution of abundance, and happiness in the daily life of the common person -- which 'they' KNOW how to create, and which they have FOUGHT against successfully, and gained absolute expertise in quelling via their THOUSANDS OF YEARS of practice via their ancient royal bloodlines -- are the OPPOSITE of what they want, the antithesis to what THEY deem as 'a successfully functioning society' -- because peace and harmony and universal abundance IS NOT PROFITABLE!! Good video, but I felt like it didn't really go anywhere or offer any solutions. Because Glattfelder isn't actually an economist, I would be curious to know what his solutions are and see if I agree.
Less dogmatic, ideological thinking and more crisp research. That is what I understood. Economist seem to spew a lot of explenations, without trying to prove any of them. So ideology replaces reason. At least that's what I got from the capital of the 21st century and from this guy as well.

Mathematics is a tool. Physics is a tool. Human behavior is what it is. Human behavior is complex. Mathematics and Physics are tools used to explain human behavior. Things go awry when weight of academic thinking gives too much credit. Events that are both recognized and realized give experience to contextual reference. Without contextual reference things get muddled when we map what is correlated and what is caused.
