An Economic Hit Man Confesses and Calls to Action | John Perkins | TEDxTraverseCity

  • John Perkins describes the methods he used to bribe and threaten the heads of state of countries on four continents in order to create a global empire and he reveals how the leaders who did not “play the game" were assassinated or overthrown. He brings us up to date about the way the economic hit man system has spread from developing countries to the US, Europe, and the rest of the world and offers a strategy for turning this around. “Each of us," he says, “can participate in this exciting revolution. We can transform a system that is consuming itself into extinction into one that is sustainable and regenerative."
John's books, including The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, have sold over a million copies, spent more than 70 weeks on the New York Times bestseller lists, and are published in more than 30 languages. As Chief Economist at a major consulting firm, his experiences advising the World Bank, UN, IMF, U.S. government, Fortune 500 corporations, and heads of state convinced him to devote his life to facilitating changes in social, political, and economic systems, as well as in general consciousness. He was founder and CEO of a highly successful alternative energy company and is a founder and board member of Dream Change and The Pachamama Alliance, nonprofits dedicated to creating a sustainable, just, peaceful, and thriving world.
John's courage in writing his books and speaking out against his former bosses exemplifies the courage shown by our Founding Fathers and Mothers when they stood up to the British Empire. Like them, John defied threats and bribes and took action.

I read his book cover to cover in 2009. I spent along time trying to verify everything.

@Max Freeman The most important claim (to anyone that's taken Macroeconomics) that this man makes is that Saudi Arabia will only trade their oil for U.S. Dollars. For the longest time this claim was unsubstantiated and only people that actually buy Saudi Arabian oil in bulk (millions of barrels) would know for sure and so far none of them have spoken up.

Just finished reading his highly compelling book "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" and the next minute I am here. Hardly two minutes ago I ended up reading his remarkable book. I would recommend everyone to read his confessions in his book. The book is more about fixing the current economic system and world order than the past confessions. He has cited countless examples to prove his arguments that how a march to the global empire has become unstoppable and how the system of corporatocracy is exploiting the world resources. One who reads his book can easily understand the role of WB, IMF and USAID in making America a global empire.

His voice is shaking. There's a pang of heavy guilt inside, and when you are behind the deprivation and destruction of several country's economies and you know millions of people died or suffered and still suffering right now because of what you did, you cannot hide that feeling of guilt. The same happened to the Philippines during the late '70s to the middle '80s, an economic hit man destroyed the nation, the people lives and even to the present, the struggle remains. Millions people gradually died of different causes due to the effect of poverty a clear repercussion of economic destruction. Yes - millions were deprived to achieve a good standard of living.

Yes, my wife is from Indonesia. The USA in the main have decimated it. Not only through deforestation but through allowing the locals to desire a western lifestyle, cars, new houses, burgers, doughnuts, TVs, internet, phones. Every country has bought it almost! There are now just a few simple people left who do not desire the material lifestyle. Now the celebrity culture has hit too! In 2000 Sumatra was still quite beautiful. Now the orang rimba who try to hold to their subsistence lifestyle have to try an camp often in a palm oil plantation. That money is laundered to Singapore and Malaysia and then to new York, London, Holland and ultimately to the Satanists running the show. They now want to depopulate after causing the actual damage!

Ukraine is a modern example. Billions of dollars worth of military aid (weapons), they’ll be indebted forever. After WW2 the military complex was emboldened. We quickly learned that all of Europe was in actual debt to the U.S. The forces and weapons that our country produced and supplied Europe, left them with a big IOU. No need to pay us back, but…

Lakhs and lakhs of people of TN have stood up on the streets and got our ancient cultural rights (Jallikattu) back, that was banned a couple of years ago. And the locals have decided not to consume (local shop owners decided not to sell) any beverages that ruins our rivers and water reservoirs, which is the only source for our farmers who produce food for our nation. Also, to support our farmers the locals and shop owners have decided to sell and consume only the natural drinks (like Tender Coconut) produced by farmers. The change is happening!

for anyone interested to dive deeper into the phenomenon that Perkins describes, you might benefit from knowing that this strategy is commonly referred to as 'debt-trap diplomacy'. through withholding intellectual property and commoditizing science and technology, capitalists in countries in the global north (developed countries) corner countries in the global south ('developing' countries) and sell them loans that are too high, so that when they default (can't pay back) they have to sell off land and other resources very cheaply to pay off those loans/debts.
from John's days it has developed further and now it's got a heavy focus on all things information technology (although definitely not limited to that). technology companies keep the 'recipes' (intellectual property) and then license the use of their recipes to companies like Foxconn who then makes Apple's iPhones (just one example among many).

Once the next country gets a taste of economic superiority, human nature will kick in and they will lie to themselves just as Americans and Israelis do and Germans did. They will believe they deserve it and are entitled. And they will all be too busy with their lives to question the system, or to look at who's neck they ate standing on to have it so good. I read John's books and deeply appreciate the unveiling of these dark truths. That being said, I disagree fundamentally with the idea that "predatory" capitalism is somehow different than capitalism. It's all capitalism. Predation is inevitable in a system based on differential advantage and self-maximization.

yes, it's fundamentally predatory, as in the predator operates covertly with the target typically unaware until it is too late. The predation has become so extreme it is now sometimes referred to as inverted totalitarianism. Corporations and the government work together to shake down the population. We are constantly told the opposite of the truth. The American dream is possible only for one in a million. The 999, 999 have to pay for it. "Trickle-down" economics is really trickle-up economics. The exploitation will continue until all resources are consumed and collapse follows. Eventually recovery will not be possible at all. We will enter a new dark age. Fun times.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who'd actually say no to that. Theoretically they might, but if this opportunity actually presented itself, it'd take a saint not to do so. However, we mustn't forget there are many charities getting millions in donations and this is also in the heart of many people, compassion. We must use this compassion in combination with intelligence to curb the greedy nature of people. Not through communism, but through regulated capitalism

These people are the children of the Romans. They worship the same, govern the same, etc. That's why they trace the history of their society back to Rome and Greece. If you read the Apocrypha, it details exactly how they rule today because they're using the same tactics. It's in the nature of the people themselves. The system of governance and the culture is just a manifestation of that.

Fear destroys a nation but truth is as a light that shines an directs you on the path to where an exit sign flashes and it only red in color to show the need that must be addressed. Listening to this fellow is a good thing but taking his advice and doing is necessary if we want to survive as a people, or some might say, as a species. God bless the doers that are motivated to do what is right and good, like this man has shown in the here and now. PEACE

    • @wlljohnbey1798

Would you, if you were him, turn yourself in? To Geneva or to whomever. That would accomplish not a thing. He's getting his story out there through widely available public venues. More people, more Americans, will know what's being done in their names and will have a more informed vote to change this system.

His book clearly says he is not an economist but he just posed as one and was asked to! However no matter who you are and hat you do, you impact the economy. This is what he means. An economist has a PhD in economics and is more analytical, tries to be objective and doesn't care about politicians or parties.. Perkins functioned as a salesman and he was very good at it.
