There is something inherently satisfying in refurbishing a ship and extending its lifetime or in building a new one and watching it set sail for the first time. Been a long time since I worked in a shipyard, but it was some of the most satisfying work I've ever done.
Matter of esthetics. A row of rivets, two meter long with a ten centimeter gap in the middle that is stick welded looks horrible. Just like a nuclear reactor in one of those old steam driven Mississippi peddle wheel liners.
I would like to express my thanks to you, ___, My gratitude for your indisputably magnificent assistance is almost infinite. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed. I really like your contribution that you have in our society, you really make a difference and help others out, the world could always use more people like you. Gosh, what a polite and humble fellow. It is such a kind honour for someone as low as me to be in contact with someone of a level such as yours. I thank you once again my good friend. A world without you, would be a world I would not be able to live in, and I believe I share that opinion with most people. I can rest easy tonight knowing you helped. I appreciate you and everything you stand for and on behalf of everyone on planet earth, thanks.
Wat een geweldige klus en hard werken. Hulde mannen.
Elbe is built in 1958 (and came into service feb '59). In those days riveting was combined with welding. Hull most riveted and superstructure most welded.
Really nice transformation. It's always good to see old boats fixed up. I found the single propeller and dual rudder setup interesting. Is that a common thing on tugs?
There is more than just one way of riveting. These rivets are placed countersunk. Not any ship is fitted with bold rivets on the outside of the hull, nor on deck. Two full heads is common in constructing bridges etc. Not for the hull of a ship.
Some of the rivets were cut too short. BOTH ends should have a rounded head on them. It's the head that holds the pieces together not the rivet squeezed in the hole. I'm surprised they didn't cut them longer.
dave onan because the ship sank in 2004 after collision and the engineroom was still under repair in 2009. They started up in 2011 and went to sea for the first time in march 2013
In the 5 years since you posted that illiteratet response, it still is the dumbest pig-dung ignorant response by a video uploader I have yet to see . . .

Its amazing that with all the modern welding and bonding techniques they still use good old rivets at times.
That’s because they were restoring it to its former build.

Nice to see this tug on wich I sailed as engineer for abt. 9 months, thanks!

What a monumental amount of work performed by an outstanding group of professionals. Very impressive. Great video.

ALL i can say to all i love tugboats boats and ships from any size love video 100 stars
Excellent video! Thank you for taking the time to share it. Professional work
Interesting to see a boat that still is riveted and having some welding within it.
Mooi! Heb ervan genoten!

Really enjoyed this vid. Thank you for posting.

in europe yes on most river craft too
Prachtige video !!! Zo wil ik er wel meer zien...

I cringed watching them power wash the barnacles without safety glasses. yikes.
AWESOME 😎 LOVELY JOB GUYS, LOVELY 😊😎👍💪🇳🇿🌈😎
It would help to say something about the Tug; for us who do not know much about ships!
Rosie the Riveter can weld, but prefers to FlashDance rather than work for a living.
Que bonito y meticuloso trabajo, recorrida general.
Nice video, subscribed hope to see more like this

Beautiful ❤🎉
Kudo's voor de muziek! :-)
Yup, speed and echo sensors were mounted.
Oh yeah, ultra sonic speed sensor, you're probably right. I think I saw it and the emergency plug in one of the shots.
Bow thruster area has been cleaned and painted after welding.
Video says it is blocked in nz due to copyright issues ? Why?
Very good job, nice boat.
Surprised they didnt send the prop in for tuning.
Thanks
I saw the retrofit of the bow thruster... but what was that downward facing port they added to the bottom?

Het was altijd al een magistraal schip.
Hmm not our plan. Maybe the Vangelis backgroundmusic gives problems?
Steel get's a very thin corroded layer.
FREEDOM AT LAST NOW LETS SAIL😎👍💪🇳🇿🌈😎
Why is she being towed to her moorings? That's not very seaman like. Let's see those new bow thrusters and that new prop working!
Christian Petersen the ship sunk 5 years before. She was not in service yet, that costed another 5 years.
I thought hot riveting had gone down with the titanic. i guess not.
Could this be done in Europe in 20 years time? Just a thought...
+ganlesse It was done in 2009.
ganlesse σεξ
well in my Nanny state most of it would be banned by those useless safety twerps
Great work!
I was SUPPOSED to be a Dutchy Von Brink Shipfitter but got switched at birth and ended up an American Pipefitter, Goddam the Luck.
chet mcguire what a supergangster are you...
So what type or purpose does this tug perform.
Scott Pecora she is a museumship now
mooie beelden
real men.respect.
looks great
helemaal te gek die klinknagels
Geweldig
a modern ship will not rust so, see the way they paint Maersk ships, in those days ships were dying even before they hit the water
Excellent music.

Top !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why do you hate new Zealand ?
And... the hole in the steel plate is drilled a little too big. It should be a slide fit.
anyone know why her own power was not used for the move?
dave onan because the ship sank in 2004 after collision and the engineroom was still under repair in 2009. They started up in 2011 and went to sea for the first time in march 2013
Thanks!
why where the anchors not re fitted
Disabled Global Challenge they where but the chains had to be renewed. All was fitted 6 weeks later.

This is not about New Zealand?
