If I'm being honest, I NEVER hated Philip! I thought he WAS weird, but he was never annoying! In fact, I actually DIDN'T mind "Philip's Number", it was just THERE, you know?
I always liked Phillip as a character, very naive yet super optimistic and willing to help whenever needed.

I don’t think Sir Topham Hatt had any growth. I think the reason why he was soft to Philip and gave him warning was because it was Phlip’s early days working on Sodor and was inexperienced. He was like that with Thomas in Season 1 of Thomas and the Trucks and TAB. If Philip was experienced on the Sodor, then Sir Topham would have scolded him and gave him a punishment

I see Edward's departure in season 21 as a grandfather leaving to mentor his grandchild while letting his adult son be independent. It all makes sense if you think about it. Edward mentored Thomas in his early days like a father would to a son. Now, he's going off to mentor Philip.
Philip will always be one of my all time favorite character
His optimism and outlook on things is what love about him and overall is just an adorable character especially with his child like qualities to him
He might've become the standard lead character had Thomas & Friends Big World! Big Adventures! never came to be.

Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't hate Phillip. I think a lot of the fandom resents him for being the "reason Edward left" but let's be real. Edward left because Mattel wanted him gone and they would have done so with or without Phillip. At least he got something of a send-off rather than Henry leaving with a single line of dialogue, and no reasoning behind it

Well, that was something else. I never thought about it that way when you compared Philip's arrival with the Adventure Begins. Very nice.
I do think Phillip is an interesting character in the Brenner era he is somewhat similar to Thomas and has a couple of good moments in the later seasons
To be honest I didn’t find Philip annoying, I really don’t understand all the Philip hate; I didn’t expect to see so many parallels in the video and I’m glad I did see it, as for Philip staying at wellsworth I don’t really like it I think he should’ve stayed at Knapford shunting yards with Charlie and Stafford. Speaking of Those two I had a thought of the three of them working in the yards together and their dynamics, Stafford is calm, Philip is energetic and Charlie is the jokester if you take Philip out it just wouldn’t be the same but all of this is just me. This video was really interesting and I’m glad I got the chance to see it, 2015 was certainly the year of Thomas wasn’t it
Edit: plus I think Philip’s the perfect even ground for Stafford and Charlie

I always liked Philip, and I really wish that they did some thing with the Philip/Edward dynamic. Sadly I don’t think we really got to see much of their dynamic after season 21.

I wish that they dove more into Phillip’s dynamic with Thomas and Edward and we saw Thomas teaching Phillip everything that Edward taught him while Edward looks upon him like a proud father. I also wished that when Phillip asked Edward if he had a nasty accident, Edward told Phillip about his exploit where his crank pin snapped and he still was able to get his passengers home, then Phillip using that story as inspiration and motivation for a later episode where he faces something.
That, and I think a GCI recreation of Edward’s exploit would be cool.

This is an excellent video, thanks for the new perspective on the character. I've personally never disliked him, though he wasn't a favorite of mine either. He's always seemed way over-hated by many, and I've never understood why. I'm just now waiting for the Unlucky Tug to come smack this video down! Lol
Great work with this video, I especially love that Thomas became like Edward. And your right that Thomas has grown up, and as for Edward I would say he left his shed because it is close to his line. The year 2015 was a great year not only did they brought a new character that acted inexperience, but it brought two movies one from the original books and the other to show he will always be the number one engine. I wish there were more shows about Philip, but the show took a turn for the worst. (BWBA) Anyway great job 🚂

I'm not going to lie, I really only hated him for taking Edward away but... the more I thought about it, the more I was like, Edward moving to Wellsworth was probably going to happen anyway. I shouldn't bash Philip for that. He just sorta jump started the idea to do it now before Edward got any older. The episode is vastly divisive as I know and I kinda fall in the middle. I don't HATE it as much as others do but I wish another character stayed with Edward, maybe Henry? Rosie? idk. Anyways Another episode that's quite divisive in the way of morals is Apology Impossible, another Philip episode. I always saw it as James' way of... dealing with Edward and Henry leaving Tidmouth. Obviously we had Gordon's side with Forever and Ever (ANOTHER divisive episode) but I always saw this as James' side. With Philip taking Edward to Wellsworth, James lost his ally and close friend to someone he I feel never got along with nor got used to. I feel James kinda... TOLERATED him for a while but after Shedward he vastly deteriorated. Thus leading to him being quite rude to Philip. I will say I was siding WITH James for a long while as I was all for beating Philip to a pulp but now, I'm on Philip's side. I can't be angry at him when it just makes sense. And how else was Philip supposed to react to an engine who just lost his ally? Especially JAMES!? I think really the moral here is you... just have to ignore the bullies as after a while, they'll realize they are not getting a reaction thus they'll see no interest to continue. Philip is no longer my least favorite character. He's certainly not my favorite by a long shot but I don't hate him anymore. I think he's just as you said, he's just Thomas incarnate just reborn in a diesel boxcab.

Even when first watching Start Your Engines when it first aired in the UK dub, I never really had any hate for Phillip.
I was addicted to him when watching Thomas Creator Collective during its first full year.
It does seem to be perfectly justified that Phillip is a diesel version of Thomas when first introduced, but some of the moments that he, Sir Topham Hatt, Thomas, James and Gordon pulled off weren't all exactly the same as The Adventure Begins.
A Shed for Edward "the famous episode loads of fans know and loathe" Edward does seem to be teaching Phillip the same stuff he taught Thomas from decades ago and both Thomas and Phillip do mature alot for the next seasons. At least the ones where one of them is starred as the episode's main character.
Lost Treasure is where I think Sir Topham Hatt decided to finally put his foot down to end Thomas' stupidity and failures.
