Eddie wrote this song while he was looking out of the front of a studio window when it was pouring down rain outside in Seattle on a cold drizzely day. (He was looking outside at the world as it goes by. The door to the studio entrance kept blowing open so there was a chill in the room itself (feel the chill) he was sitting on the windowsill looking out (i see the birds in the rain) the reason i know this is because i was there. I followed them there on my mountain bike. Not knowing at the time how fortunate i truly was to experience such an incredible moment that day would become to me. Also not knowing how BIG the band would become the talent was undeniable. Their music saved my life and still to this day i will NEVER forget that day. Their music still means more than any lyric can write. Thank you to Pearl Jam and the greatest American Rock band on the planet!
What a life, what a ride. Thanks for sharing that Chad my man. Truly one of the best of the best this song stirs my soul. Takes me to days gone by, good days!
I dont care if anybody believes me its not about me its about the moment and what this songs does to the emotions of its listeners. He also wrote this about his real Dad he Never really got to know that well as his Mom didnt tell Eddie it was his real Father until he was around 13 (Hense “Son have i got a story for you, at age 13 your real Daddy was dying”) its part of the Trilogy- Once, evenflow, Footsteps
I believe you and think that's amazing man. I don't know what stuck with me more, the movie Out of the Furnace or this song on the soundtrack. Both just visceral thunderstorms of tremendously dark beauty and sadness.
Thank you all for your kind words and comments. It's been 8 years since my father passed away on this day and I made this video for him. He was my hero and I felt the images in this video, needed to be epic. At first it was going to be without the lyrics, but the song is so powerful, it's great to singalong to.
Me too.... R.i.p. to our dads ❤. I had a dream about him last night and woke up crying 😔, i miss him so much. Wherever he is i know I'll see him again one day.
I use this song as my release from sin, God is my dad. Yesterday I found the Holy Spirit and everything has changed, I’m released from the chains of sin
My dad died in 86 when I was 7 my mom in 92 when I was 12 and inwas sent to live with my grandmother one day I was listening to this on my walkman and I look up and see hundreds of monarch butterflies covering the tops of the trees in front of my grandma's house
I heard this song after seeing Out of the Furnace and I felt how powerful this song was. I just looked up the words and realized the year my dad passed away was the year Out of the Furnace came out and I play this song often. This opens my heart every time I hear this song. It's beautiful and powerful and spiritual beyond belief. I can feel him singing this as a prayer. So beautiful.
Hands down the most beautiful lyric video on UA-cam thank you so much shed a tear at the end then read your comment on your father and now i appreciate it even more. Always remember that he will be with you untill one day you meet again. Salute
This was my goodbye song to my dad. I did not know him very well in life but i now know him in death, because he walks beside me. After his death I walked a very dangerous path leading up to drugs and alcohol, I shaved my head not knowing that our hair in my culture is sacred and our connection to Spirit. I am told i look just like him except for being a female. In my addiction i listen to this quite often and will always and forever be grateful for Eddie vedder and the band. I am now sober and have been for Three years.
This song... I like it a lot and enjoy singing to it. I have my own bad history with my father. He disowned me and grew I to hate him. He wasn't always around as I grew up. My mom still will tell me every now and then I'm just like him at times... Sometimes I wish for approval... Idk... Wish things didn't come to what they are now. I don't know, part of me still misses him and hope he'll contact me and the other part wants nothing to do with him anymore... This song speaks many levels.
I understand completely. I won't go into my he'll, but I will tell you if you don't find a way to let go of the hate and the bitterness it will ruin any chances you'll have at happiness. I speak from experience and years of being all messed up. Life is precious and short....
I'm 18 and only in the past two years discovered pearl jam. Just now hearing this song for the first time as I look at my window...all I thought of right away is how I absolutely need this on vinyl. The song hits too close to home and I relate to it here in Michigan. Sort of similar weather as Washington and we have the great lakes for some waves as well. Man such a great song. Edit: The visuals on this video are fantastic as well! The pictures go great with the words. Amazing job👍
This was the first song i played after my dad past away in June 2019.. It will always be the song i link with his passing.. don't think there will ever be a day in my life that I would not mis him.
My brother recently passed, and his very good friend said this song has been weighing on her mind. And its my brother speaking to her! I hope so! I hope hes pain free, and out there somewhere with my father!
kingleonidas Stay strong. Mine passed away 8 years ago. I still miss having someone with whom to share my wins. The pain won't go away, but it will settle down and you'll find the way to live well with it and the memories. Just look ahead! That's how he'd want it to be.
My Father past away when I was 12 years old in my arms he was my best friend my brother the only person that ever understood me. It was a great lose for me pain that word can't compare to anything that you feel when a father passes away. My man it well be hard it well be very hard but think about this we live In hell he is at piece now and one day let me many years from now you well we him again. Live life not in pain but for him in his memory make your life such a great one that it well shack the very gates of heaven make him smile from above my man is the only thing I can say. Be strong bro it well be a long road man but do it make him proud.
I love this song so much, also it really reminds me of home. Wich I will be returning to in a week from today. When I first herd this song, I just thought of home, driving through The Smokey Mountains, looking out of the back window, sipping on coffee. Remember that moment like it was yesterday.
This takes me back to my days as a US MARINE in Somalia. I remember listening to this to relax after all hell broke loose on our first day on the ground.
Ive never been touched so profoundly by a song as i have by Release. My dad walked out on us when i was 5 and it affected me deeply through childhood cause i was that kid in the late 60s with no dad. What saved me was surfing my guts out and coming to terms with the hand i was dealt. I met my dad some years later spent little time with him over the years until his death in late 90s. Im ok now and i know in my heart its because of the music of this iconic band. Thank you PJ from bottom of this healed heart😊❤️🏄. And oh ya, still surfing the wave here in Ventura Cali 😁
Great job on the video....beautiful! 1st time I've really listened to the lyrics. Lost my Dad when I was really young. Eddie's so passionate hope he's around for a long time to come
My dad still here. I listen this song in the car right after i dropped my kids in their mothers house. I came home crying like a baby and hug my old man like i never did before. Think im ready. But im not
Lost my dad a year and a half ago, this song definitely resonates and hits the heart HEAVY .I have played this song a million and one times, and will probably play it a million and one more. Thank you for the Awsome video imagery and thank you Pearl Jam for such an amazing heartfelt song😎👍 a song meant for sons who lost their father
when its nice and sunny out i get my old 73 jeep out and drive the countryside i have this song turned as loud as it will go feels so damn good to be alive.
All that reads this. Please check out Release 1992 Live in Holland on you tube! Its HANDS DOWN the most INCREDIBLE VERSION i have EVER HEARD to date!!! Ive seen Pearl Jam Perform Live 9 times but none compared to this early Live performance!!! Incredible!!
I can't believe this video has only had 100,000 views. I've been missing my dad this morning, beautiful video. My dad was a Capricorn, so the earth and water elements in the video, really resonate with me. Thank you.
Because. My dad ignored me this song so resonates with me. Every single day of my life. I chased so many unavailable man, Because I would have no idea what to do with a man if he actually was capable of loving me and I also allowed myself to be Ina highly abusive marriage because at least then with all that pain I thought and truly believed I was accepting the love that I thought I deserved so like I said this. He clearly says, "I see the verse in the rain" not birds, which goes with the previous line about words. Saying birds makes your story sound not true.
Thank you all for your kind words and comments. It's been 8 years since my father passed away on this day and I made this video for him. I find myself thinking of my deceased father as well.

Missing my Daddy... he came to visit me in my dreams... I’ll leave the light on pops...

I love it when my dad comes to see me in my dreams
He has never left
Talk to him
GIVES ME STRENGTH WHEN I AM TRULY WEAK!!!

Beautiful. I used release on a waterfall video I filmed yesterday. 💙🙏🇦🇺
I don't know what made me decide to click on this lyric video for Release, but it's the best decision I made today. Well done, real nice work.
I love this song. You can really hear the emotion in Eddie's voice
