Everyone looks at Christopher McCandless story as one that should push people to go out, in the wild, alone, to find freedom. No one looks at the message Christopher sent: a person can find him/herself struggling to live in this society (a capitalistic and globalized one, where one consumes to always consume more - i.e. buying brand new phones when your own is still working, or a new car because it is more beautiful than the one you have) but you cannot change the society from outside, alienating yourself in the wild, with no contact with that "society". Christopher tried to go back in that society, he built his own awareness, he understood he needed people and things around him to be happy, not the extreme and sometimes empty wildness. And as you can see, he remains 113 days in the wild. But travels for 2 long years, meeting people, not feeling alone at all. To sum up, I believe you can be free everywhere, if your soul is free. You can love others, if you love yourself. And traveling is a way of being free and of loving, with no necessities to "close" yourself in the wild. And believe me, though you may sometimes decide to travel alone (so with no people you know) you will never be alone along the route, as you will meet those who will make up your traveling days and experiences - and everything will make more sense and will be more amazing. "Happiness only real when shared" C.J. McCandless.

For 10 years the white lines have took over me, my friends and the place i used to call home. My mental health is in ruins and has been for a long time. I see no other alternative than flee and be alone to try and find the person i used to be. Addiction is an horrible decease. It takes your mind, body, your wallet and leaves you an empty shell. If you think its just a phase and just having a laugh its already got you. Seek help and start ditching. Youre better than that. Dont waste your life. Peace to all

Give thanks to Yahweh; call on His name; proclaim His deeds among the peoples. Sing to Him; sing praise to Him; tell about all His wonderful works! Honor His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek Yahweh rejoice.

. . . . or just sing songs that don't honour God . Everyone chooses the songs they sing.

I love this so much. I really want to raise my son to distance himself from societies pressures and expectations and just find freedom to be himself. I was raised to work, to go to school to make money, money was all that mattered to my parents, and I never remember being taught to be happy above all else. I don't care if he lives to be 90 and has nothing but a shack to show for it, as long as he smiled, laughed, danced, and loved. There's so much more to the world than being what society expects of you ❤

Had been raising my daughter like this, she loved me very much, until my lovely sister and her husband took her away from me at the age of 8. We dont see eachother anymore since i cant remember when.
This is killing me. Trying to stay strong, make some money to hire a good lawyer etc.
I have been so naive, could never believe how horrible and selfish people can be. Never had any enemies or people to hate. Now i am drowning in hate, i can say it is probably the worst feeling of all.
God bless you and your son. Happy new year, all the best to you two!

This song reminds me of my brother who took his life 40 years ago for all the reasons in this song. A gentle soul who travelled the world in his short 24 years here. Lived in a cabin with nothing, surrounded by nature, he inspired me to know what really matters in this world. In all honestly I am glad he isn't here to see even more damage to this earth humans have done..he went out on his own terms..

Eddie Vedder did a masterful job scoring the epic film "Into the Wild." As a backpacker, guitar player and singer, the film was right up my alley. When I bought the album, I was over the moon. It had been decades since an album spoke to me like that. Playing these songs on guitar and singing along with them is as much fun as I've had with my guitar since I learned John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High."

Can we all get together and create a community near the woods, not far from a lake or river where we can grow our own food, plant orchards, climb, forage, sing around fires, build cabins and shelters? Maybe raise some chickens humanely? If wealthy developers can build condos and housing units and cookie cutter houses, why can’t we build a green, sustainable, rural neighborhood ? We can get out of this hollow society and live peacefully without all of the corporate greed and violence and corruption. We can, can’t we? Who’s with me?

This song means a lot to me. Me and brother grew up together in a small town that slowly grew into a tourist spot. We watched this movie and almost envied McCandless in a way. We used to talk about real freedom. We both had a crap childhood. We liked the idea of living life for everything it had to offer. In November of 2020, my brother couldn't take it anymore. He ended his life. I've moved on. Had kids, got married, got an education, made something of myself, but I hear this song constantly. He missed out on the true beauty of life. Love and happiness, something that was so hard to come by for us, he could have had it. People stay strong. Life is rough, you may not feel like you fit in to modern society, but I am living proof. Keep going. I'm still here. I'm happy with what I've accomplished, I feel free. I have two beautiful daughters to bring up better than I was brought up. I just wish I could have got that through to him. God rest your soul Dakota. I will always love ya brother.

Never heard a song that I relate to as much as this one. The whole album is incredible. Every single song is full of ripe emotions we all can relate to. I've lived in Alaska for 49 years. Very much aware of the bus. It was recently moved because of so many people being entangled with the movie and trying to make the trek without proper knowledge of how harsh, yet stunningly beautiful Alaska is. Alaska takes a person's breath away.

I feel this song is a little deeper than just someone wanting to leave society. I feel that it taps into the deeper desire many of us transcendentalists have. When he says, "I hope you're not lonely without me," I feel that that means he truly wishes he could be a famous, beloved member of society, but he knows it's unlikely to happen. He knows society won't miss him. And because of that he's sad and decides to leave.

True freedom lies not in breaking free from external constraints, nor the ability to do as one pleases, but rather in releasing oneself from the shackles of societal expectations, past failures and internalized beliefs. Until a person frees their mind from the opinions and judgments of others, they will always be bound by their own limitations and the limitations imposed upon them.
The liberation attained by letting go of a once-cherished desires is not a lack of aspiration or frustration, but rather a release from the hold of fixation. It takes the realization that not all things unfold as we had hoped and the bravery to accept failures while welcoming the unfamiliar with a clear mind, to attain a profound sense of tranquility and freedom within.
I find “freedom” in God’s natural world. The forrest provides a haven of calmness, a place to flee the noise and confusion of daily life and find inner peace. The stillness and silence of this natural world invites reflection, enabling the re-exploration of the self, ultimately resulting in a deep sense of tranquility and serenity, reminding us of the balance that exists both within and beyond us.
But, what do I know, as I too am quite the crazy breed.
