Everyone looks at Christopher McCandless story as one that should push people to go out, in the wild, alone, to find freedom. No one looks at the message Christopher sent: a person can find him/herself struggling to live in this society (a capitalistic and globalized one, where one consumes to always consume more - i.e. buying brand new phones when your own is still working, or a new car because it is more beautiful than the one you have) but you cannot change the society from outside, alienating yourself in the wild, with no contact with that "society". Christopher tried to go back in that society, he built his own awareness, he understood he needed people and things around him to be happy, not the extreme and sometimes empty wildness. And as you can see, he remains 113 days in the wild. But travels for 2 long years, meeting people, not feeling alone at all. To sum up, I believe you can be free everywhere, if your soul is free. You can love others, if you love yourself. And traveling is a way of being free and of loving, with no necessities to "close" yourself in the wild. And believe me, though you may sometimes decide to travel alone (so with no people you know) you will never be alone along the route, as you will meet those who will make up your traveling days and experiences - and everything will make more sense and will be more amazing. I love this so much. I really want to raise my son to distance himself from societies pressures and expectations and just find freedom to be himself. I was raised to work, to go to school to make money, money was all that mattered to my parents, and I never remember being taught to be happy above all else. I don't care if he lives to be 90 and has nothing but a shack to show for it, as long as he smiled, laughed, danced, and loved. There's so much more to the world than being what society expects of you ❤
Had been raising my daughter like this, she loved me very much, until my lovely sister and her husband took her away from me at the age of 8. We dont see eachother anymore since i cant remember when.
This is killing me. Trying to stay strong, make some money to hire a good lawyer etc.
I have been so naive, could never believe how horrible and selfish people can be. Never had any enemies or people to hate. Now i am drowning in hate, i can say it is probably the worst feeling of all.

My dad died recently and I looked through his personal belongings and I found his mp3 player and this song was on it before he died and it truly made me cry with joy.
Edit: It was the last song he listen before peacefully passing away... I just found out today when I looked at the camreas, he flat lined as soon as the song ended. Rest in peace.

In 14 days ill be leaving my beautiful girlfriend of 15 years and the best 3 kids a man could ask for. Ill leave unplanned no phone, abit of money and the clothes on my back. For 10 years the white lines have took over me, my friends and the place i used to call home. My mental health is in ruins and has been for a long time. I see no other alternative than flee and be alone to try and find the person i used to be. Addiction is an horrible decease. It takes your mind, body, your wallet and leaves you an empty shell. I've had many times I've drove to the top of a mountain in WA and played this. This song has literally helped change my life and helped me find financial freedom. Materialism isn't happiness, happiness is the basic things you need and the time to enjoy them.

Eddie Vedder did a masterful job scoring the epic film "Into the Wild." As a backpacker, guitar player and singer, the film was right up my alley. When I bought the album, I was over the moon. It had been decades since an album spoke to me like that. Playing these songs on guitar and singing along with them is as much fun as I've had with my guitar since I learned John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High."

That's exactly what I wanna do as well. I'm turning 18 tomorrow but I have always been more mature than other kids my age. I know it's cringe to say that but I have been through a lot in my life that was really hard. Horrible parents and I have been broke my whole life. The only true happiness I feel is with my friends, being in nature, and being with animals. I want to travel more than anything else. I want to see the world and meet new people and cultures. I don't care if I have to go back packing.

I can't remember where I heard this song but for the past few months I keep playing it in my head with "anxiety" replacing "society" in the refrain. It gives the rest of the lyrics a whole new meaning. It has the same despairing undercurrent that I feel with my anxiety these days. It's therapeutic to be heard.

Anxiety, crazy and big..
i'm 18 now and i see people from my age worrying about what society thinks about them. And then i look at me and i see a guy that don't belongs to that group of people. A guy that only care about living and enjoying life. A guy that don't give a damn thing about what others think. Just being happy with myself. a year ago i stayed in coma for 2 weeks and i can barely remember the things before coma. when i open this song some moments and feelings suddenly came to me, the life i have lived. and now i clearly remember i used to listen to this song a lot. i feel blessed for having such an amazing moment. life is full of surprises.

Reading these comments warms my heart. I was lucky enough to have a father that taught me money means shit. I never searched for money. I searched for my soul, and I think at 47 years old I've found it. This is one of my favorite tunes to strum. Dad is gone now, but I think of him when I play this song.

This song has infused my veins since seeing "Into the Wild" years ago. I was never a fan of PJ or grunge in general. But damn, I really do have newfound appreciation/respect for Eddie Vedder. This is pure folk brilliance. Genius wordsmithing.

Beautiful haunting sad in a good way, i only came across this song, when i watched the film into the wild, iv a song on the go i wrote it produced it and sing in it, because i was a drunk/junkie,,, coming up to 5yrs sober, and i have everything u would want transport, 75 inch tv all the mod cons, but it all means nothing to me, well not nothing being sober allowed me to get here, but theres something in my life thats missing and id give everything i have to have them in my life,, the song is called ( havent got to say hello yet, ) by silent brook, iv never done anything like it before, i started to learne the guitar in my early 20's, then drink, drugs, wife, kids bad mix, if i had known in my early 20's what was going to happen hindsight?, i just i picked the guitar up about 2yrs ago, and just got the words and guitars notes for this song, just being able to that gives me such a overwhellming feeling of being thankful, that im still alive, and for what i have today, if i wasnt sober id have nothing, but in saying that it all means nothing compared to what missing in my life ul understand that when u hear me talk at the end of my song and this isnt a ad, its just very personal and i get this song, 💚green heart not cause im irish its for good mental health to everyone God Bless 💚😢

This song and his many other songs have been with me throughout very hard times. I truly appreciate his music and when I do pass, I want this song to be played.
I came across him in Bob Dylans 30th anniversary concert in '93 and have been hooked since. Unbelievable voice
I spend hours &hours commenting mostly under Eddie,Chris and Chester honestly; and just hearing Eddie's beautiful voice ,I just thank God above that he's here with us! And blessing us with his beautiful music. We always have Chris and Chester's music to remain here, likewise ultimately, Eddie's will remain carved into this earth when he's gone.

Eddie you have so many people that love you. This is going to sound really silly ;but I don't care. When I listen to you, I feel like I know you.. I think we all do. I think the fans almost feel a bond with you guys. You have just identified with us in a way nobody else has, it's kind of surreal, but that's how I feel. I believe that we view You guys In a Different Light than the average musician. Number one because you guys are not average damn musicians but.. u know; Well, I can't even explain it . I know everybody here gets what I'm saying,it's kind of like riding a Harley LOL ..One of my stickers that I had on my helmets said that awesome Harley-Davidson quote, "If I had to explain it, you wouldn't understand."
Life Changes everybody has their stuff. I have isolated for 4 years since I I got in a wheelchair, amongst many other things lol but by the grace of God I can get up and walk most of the time now you know I'm just saying this because we have Black Days you know, and many of us are just absolutely alone there's probably quite a few other this pretty much lost everything. But you know we can breathe and we can walk and we can listen to your kickass music. I wish I was a star in somebody's sky.
