I love this so much. I really want to raise my son to distance himself from societies pressures and expectations and just find freedom to be himself. I was raised to work, to go to school to make money, money was all that mattered to my parents, and I never remember being taught to be happy above all else. I don't care if he lives to be 90 and has nothing but a shack to show for it, as long as he smiled, laughed, danced, and loved. Wow, thank you. So powerful. We live in a society today that’s all about showing off and how much somebody has and a bunch of other bullshit that really doesn’t matter. People don’t value anything anymore. I hope you raise your child to think for himself, to value life, and to dance like no one is looking. God bless 🙂
Everyone looks at Christopher McCandless story as one that should push people to go out, in the wild, alone, to find freedom. No one looks at the message Christopher sent: a person can find him/herself struggling to live in this society (a capitalistic and globalized one, where one consumes to always consume more - i.e. buying brand new phones when your own is still working, or a new car because it is more beautiful than the one you have) but you cannot change the society from outside, alienating yourself in the wild, with no contact with that "society". Christopher tried to go back in that society, he built his own awareness, he understood he needed people and things around him to be happy, not the extreme and sometimes empty wildness. And as you can see, he remains 113 days in the wild. But travels for 2 long years, meeting people, not feeling alone at all. To sum up, I believe you can be free everywhere, if your soul is free. You can love others, if you love yourself. And traveling is a way of being free and of loving, with no necessities to "close" yourself in the wild. And believe me, though you may sometimes decide to travel alone (so with no people you know) you will never be alone along the route, as you will meet those who will make up your traveling days and experiences - and everything will make more sense and will be more amazing. "Happiness only real when shared" C.J. McCandless.

This song reminds me of my brother who took his life 40 years ago for all the reasons in this song. A gentle soul who travelled the world in his short 24 years here. Lived in a cabin with nothing, surrounded by nature, he inspired me to know what really matters in this world. Eddie Vedder did a masterful job scoring the epic film "Into the Wild." As a backpacker, guitar player and singer, the film was right up my alley. When I bought the album, I was over the moon. It had been decades since an album spoke to me like that. Playing these songs on guitar and singing along with them is as much fun as I've had with my guitar since I learned John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High."
When your there become here you simply obtain another there, don't relinquish the reality of a wife and kids for an unachievable dream. You can't run away from yourself.. Trust me I know

I can listen to the song and a social setting and Just Vibe to it. But if I'm alone like now you can bet your last dollar I will be balancing tears on my eyelids
Reading these comments warms my heart. I was lucky enough to have a father that taught me money means shit. I never searched for money. I searched for my soul, and I think at 47 years old I've found it. This is one of my favorite tunes to strum. Dad is gone now, but I think of him when I play this song. Thanks Eddie.
I can't remember where I heard this song but for the past few months I keep playing it in my head with "anxiety" replacing "society" in the refrain. It gives the rest of the lyrics a whole new meaning. It has the same despairing undercurrent that I feel with my anxiety these days. It's therapeutic to be heard.
That's... super helpful. Wow 👏 Thank you. New age personal eras seem to tear away w/chaos & creation but... internalizing the cost hits harder these days. At least, for this one it does. Roll on e'ryone 🙏
Every time I listen to this song I just quit doing everything, just close my eyes and I listen to every single word. That is the strong effect this song has !
This song means a lot to me. Me and brother grew up together in a small town that slowly grew into a tourist spot. We watched this movie and almost envied McCandless in a way. We used to talk about real freedom. We both had a crap childhood. We liked the idea of living life for everything it had to offer. In November of 2020, my brother couldn't take it anymore. He ended his life. I've moved on. Had kids, got married, got an education, made something of myself, but I hear this song constantly. He missed out on the true beauty of life. Love and happiness, something that was so hard to come by for us, he could have had it. People stay strong. Life is rough, you may not feel like you fit in to modern society, but I am living proof. Keep going. I'm still here. I'm happy with what I've accomplished, I feel free. I have two beautiful daughters to bring up better than I was brought up. I just wish I could have got that through to him. God rest your soul Dakota. I will always love ya brother.
I appreciate my good friend for introducing me to this song...we were both having extremely difficult nights (each, for our own reasons), but I will forever have a special place in my heart for him sharing this with me! I hope you all love and enjoy this song as much as I do! Best wishes to us all!
Thank you Eddie for being in my music since I was 12 now I'm 41 and aging to your music is an honor,..keep Rollin brother..and then all others..the unspoken means the most to those who can feel sometimes a little more than most..be well brothers n sisters.
i'm 18 now and i see people from my age worrying about what society thinks about them. And then i look at me and i see a guy that don't belongs to that group of people. A guy that only care about living and enjoying life. A guy that don't give a damn thing about what others think. Just being happy with myself. So thank you Eddie vedder( society) , for helping me understanding that that's the only thing that matters, loving yourself for who you are, and only after giving your love to others.
a year ago i stayed in coma for 2 weeks and i can barely remember the things before coma. when i open this song some moments and feelings suddenly came to me, the life i have lived. and now i clearly remember i used to listen to this song a lot. i feel blessed for having such an amazing moment. life is full of surprises.

This songs means so much. It will go down in history books with music greats like Mozart, Brahms, and others. Simple in these times, ignored by many because of message, but full of truth, meaning, and spirit for tomorrow's society to listen, learn, and follow. When I feel the throng of society pulling at me and drawing me into its mesh, I listened to this song, and remember what is really important.
The first time I heard this song, I had UA-cam playing music on the TV in the other room. I was going about ny business. When I heard this, I stopped in my tracks and said "What in the world is that beautiful sound?" I went to see, and sure enough it was the one and only Eddie Vedder. 💜

Society crazy indeed hope you're not lonely, without me. Society have mercy on me Hope you're not angry, if i disagree. Society, you're crazy breed. Hope you're not lonely, without me.
I feel this song is a little deeper than just someone wanting to leave society. I feel that it taps into the deeper desire many of us transcendentalists have. When he says, "I hope you're not lonely without me," I feel that that means he truly wishes he could be a famous, beloved member of society, but he knows it's unlikely to happen. He knows society won't miss him. And because of that he's sad and decides to leave.
Eddie's voice is a holy gift, a passion for a whole life. Wonderful and magical. I love him very much and my heart is always with him. Forever. His wonderful eyes are so incredible. Eddie is a work of total art.🙏👌👏❤️🔥❤️🔥
In one week comes the birthday of Chris McCandless' who taught me a lot about life. but most importantly, he taught me that "happiness only real when shared" what's the point of doing stuff if you have no one to share them with?
Not a single man in this world can sing like this man. I still remember the first time I heard his voice back in 1991, Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. It changed everything.
Thanks for the information. I would check out the bank. I know you must be surprised to hear from me but I created this account so I can reach out to my fans, and know what they think about me, and the band. Could you send me an email now as I would love to know more about you, and what you think about me and the band?
Never heard a song that I relate to as much as this one. The whole album is incredible. Every single song is full of ripe emotions we all can relate to. I've lived in Alaska for 49 years. Very much aware of the bus. It was recently moved because of so many people being entangled with the movie and trying to make the trek without proper knowledge of how harsh, yet stunningly beautiful Alaska is. Alaska takes a person's breath away. g
Every time I listen to this song I feel so cut off from the world I love and the life I’m forced to live. He sings to my soul and it hurts but I know it’s a painful beautiful thing. Thank you for vocalizing an emotion That’s always just below the surface.
I don't think that is a bad thing hey, I disagree with the masses too, utter insanity what most people do with their lives , fuck a mortgage and working for someone else to get rich, I am going fishing
This song so reaonates with my present state of mind...was an officer, working for government but left the job even though had several years. Everything seem so hollow, nothing to achieve, nothing to pursue, just nothing. In end, it is just dust.....
Jennifer Crawford As surreal and daunting the world feels these past 3 weeks, know that we have each other, that positivity matters... a lot, and that we're getting through this, like it or not, Covid- Peace :)
I haven't heard this song in a while, but with all the madness going on in the UK right now, I'm reminded of this more than ever. There are always those who look to take from you, your life, liberty, and happiness. Each generation has it's role to play in pushing back against such. Wherever you are, whenever you are, whoever you are, you are a unique human being who is always capable of love. There can never be too much love, life, positivity.... Respect and care for yourself and one another. You've got this! 🙏❤️
I remember the first time I heard this song in 2017. I literally sold everything and have been traveling ever since. The places you will see, the experiences you will feel.
That's exactly what I wanna do as well. I'm turning 18 tomorrow but I have always been more mature than other kids my age. I know it's cringe to say that but I have been through a lot in my life that was really hard. Horrible parents and I have been broke my whole life. The only true happiness I feel is with my friends, being in nature, and being with animals. I want to travel more than anything else. I want to see the world and meet new people and cultures. I don't care if I have to go back packing.
The words in this song are so powerful, it broke me, my heart oozes reality, and the pain of working my hands to the bone for nothing shakes the foundation I stand on.
Today, I'm listening to this song on a loop. I feel like it's important that sometimes we check ourselves and examine all our beliefs in in the world. ❤
"To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society. I am not solitary whilst I read and write, though nobody is with me. But if a man would be alone, let him look at the stars. The rays that come from those heavenly worlds will separate between him and what he touches." - Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nature
This song has infused my veins since seeing "Into the Wild" years ago. I was never a fan of PJ or grunge in general. But damn, I really do have newfound appreciation/respect for Eddie Vedder. This is pure folk brilliance. Genius wordsmithing.
And here I am, thinking I'm going to listen to this song for the first time. Nope. I grew up listening to this song, in the car, on my way to school or just at home in the weekends or something. This is such a beautiful song.
I spend hours &hours commenting mostly under Eddie,Chris and Chester honestly; and just hearing Eddie's beautiful voice ,I just thank God above that he's here with us! And blessing us with his beautiful music. We always have Chris and Chester's music to remain here, likewise ultimately, Eddie's will remain carved into this earth when he's gone. But I'm so glad Eddie is just toughing it out and sticking around. This is the highlight of my day, my music and reading comments and leaving comments you know . Life changes but this is good stuff. That's why I get mad at the haters ,especially on Chris and Chester's songs, that would dare post anything negative about them after they have perished.Pure Evil . You know but at least Chris and Chester have fkn ☮️ PEACE now. Eddie you have so many people that love you. This is going to sound really silly ;but I don't care. When I listen to you, I feel like I know you.. I think we all do. I think the fans almost feel a bond with you guys. You have just identified with us in a way nobody else has, it's kind of surreal, but that's how I feel. I believe that we view You guys In a Different Light than the average musician. Number one because you guys are not average damn musicians but.. u know; Well, I can't even explain it . I know everybody here gets what I'm saying,it's kind of like riding a Harley LOL ..One of my stickers that I had on my helmets said that awesome Harley-Davidson quote, "If I had to explain it, you wouldn't understand." Life Changes everybody has their stuff. I have isolated for 4 years since I I got in a wheelchair, amongst many other things lol but by the grace of God I can get up and walk most of the time now you know I'm just saying this because we have Black Days you know, and many of us are just absolutely alone there's probably quite a few other this pretty much lost everything. But you know we can breathe and we can walk and we can listen to your kickass music. I wish I was a star in somebody's sky. I love to just come on UA-cam, it's the only communication I've had with others almost 4 years you got to be tough cuz how quickly that sun can fall away.. I can't tell you how much your music honestly has changed my whole life! It's like a little mosaic piece of me. Not only do you convey such deep heartfelt freaking awesome messages in every song you have ,it's like a part of us. If I didn't have this to do and timeless music to listen to, I don't know what I'd do. My dad, my precious father who loved me unconditionally, the sole one, was a violin major and was in 3 symphony orchestras & I played piano with him. We used to talk about music , it's vital. I can't imagine living without it. You know, when you can't talk about it, or you can't get through it, you sing it. That's what you do for me. I just wish I could talk to you someway.I wish I could just sit down and meet you and spend 1 hour with you. Today! Oh I need to. You already are my star in my sky. IN MMMIIINNNEEE! And thank you so much for that. We love you ,stay strong please! God bless you Eddie!

I am in the process of letting go of immense hate that has consumed me for over 20 years now and has left me with absolutely nothing. I am finally finding happiness again. I have been listening to this for healing, and it is profoundly.
Love how he does this on a ukulele. As someone who plays both the uke and tenor guitar, I am always shocked by how many people disparage this smaller instrument. It works perfectly with this song and the mood it sets.
I found someone that was lonely like me in this society... And we are so happy together! Found the love, the true love! I hope everybody could feel the same ❤️🥲❣️ I wish y’all have the courage to end toxic relationships just I did! I never saw my daughter so happy in his entire life, she felt my pain all these years and I never had the courage to let her mother! Thank you God to protect me and her ❤️ peace to all my brothers and sisters 🥲🥲🥲
This song is lovely. I want to gaze at the stars and think of a better world we could be living in. The society we live in is not the better world. That why Chris McCandless went into the wild to find this better world unfortunately he died looking for it.R.I.P.

Great movie 👍
Awesome post .. no surprise you like John Denver too. Similar appeal ❤️❤️
I hope all's well with you. Sharing the world with people like you gives me energy to keep going. Thank you.

i agree!
Eddie arguably wrote his best songs for this soundtrack and this is arguably the best of them. So simple. So beautful. So true. So powerful.
Except Eddie didn’t write this song. It was written by Jerry Hannan who is a local musician in San Francisco.
In 14 days ill be leaving my beautiful girlfriend of 15 years and the best 3 kids a man could ask for. Ill leave unplanned no phone, abit of money and the clothes on my back. For 10 years the white lines have took over me, my friends and the place i used to call home. My mental health is in ruins and has been for a long time. I see no other alternative than flee and be alone to try and find the person i used to be. Addiction is an horrible decease. It takes your mind, body, your wallet and leaves you an empty shell. If you think its just a phase and just having a laugh its already got you. Seek help and start ditching. Youre better than that. Dont waste your life. Peace to all

Exactly! I discovered this song when I trying to handle my anxiety. Then I realized my anxiety is more related with society than my thoughts.

We have a greed

More than you need
Until you have it all you won't be free

I hope you're not lonely without me
When you want more than you have

And when you think more than you want

This song is so beautiful and makes me cry every time I listen to it. 😢 Eddies voice is like heaven!

"To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society. I am not solitary whilst I read and write, though nobody is with me. This song has infused my veins since seeing "Into the Wild" years ago. I was never a fan of PJ or grunge in general. But damn, I really do have newfound appreciation/respect for Eddie Vedder. This is pure folk brilliance. Genius wordsmithing.
While you should def respect and appreciate vedder, this song was written by Jerry Hannan
Ditto about PJ and respect
And here I am, thinking I'm going to listen to this song for the first time. Nope. I grew up listening to this song, in the car, on my way to school or just at home in the weekends or something. This is such a beautiful song.
This is the saddest, most heartbreakingly resonant song ever written.
I know everybody here gets what I'm saying,it's kind of like riding a Harley LOL ..One of my stickers that I had on my helmets said that awesome Harley-Davidson quote, "If I had to explain it, you wouldn't understand."
Life Changes everybody has their stuff.

Alot of people (myself included) know this song from Into the Wild. If you've not seen it but love the song, you'll love the film.
@@breaddboy that’s how I got to listen to this masterpiece. I stumbled across this film by accident, and for a low budget film I really enjoyed it , even more so listening to Eddie vedder too.
This was first time when i heard this song. Ou my, what a mastespiece❤ i love it
"A felicidade só é real quando compartilhada."
Valeu ✌️
This song always makes me cry and I hate it as a 25 year old man. Its hits hard and it was the favorite song of the only woman I've loved. It's massively cathartic.
Your feelings are valid no matter your gender. Love lost is very painful. I hope the sun shines light on all the beauty around and inside you and you feel one with our mother, earth.
I’m sorry you are in pain. Feel better sending love
in what way?
As a 50 year old, I can tell you that you have a whole bunch of sunny days ahead. Heartbreaks and heartaches will come and go. Over and over. My first big one was at about 20. Then 25. Then 30 something...
Be You, Love You and the right one will too.
Chris McCandless brought me here, rest in peace brother
mustafa juventino after reading his story and seeing the film he in a way brought peace to my life. I stopped wanting so much, I realized the most beautiful things in life are free.
Respect to every wandering spirit searching for simplicity

Truly no one like Eddie Vedder. God, his songs are so damn captivating and raw. Absolute legend
